Rub-a-dub-dub...

I love how approachingly *human* your non-human characters are. Yeah, it's a paradoxical statement. Sue me. Or draft me, whatever. You two just create such vibrant and genuinely humble scenes amidst such an epic tale, and I really appreciate that.
velvetsanity 21st Apr 2017, 12:36 AM edit delete reply

All they're doing is leaving in all the scenes and dialogue that Hollywood insists on deleting in favor of Michael Bey explosions LOL
megados 21st Apr 2017, 12:38 AM edit delete reply

@Cal, well said, and very true!
Sheela 21st Apr 2017, 2:09 AM edit delete reply

Hah, there is some truth to that.

thank you very much~!
Tokyo Rose 21st Apr 2017, 8:11 AM edit delete reply

Thank you. It's nice to know that these scenes are appreciated as much as kick-ass action scenes and explosions. :)
megados 21st Apr 2017, 10:31 AM edit delete reply

Well, Noctis just summed up a kick-ass action scene, so . . . ;)
velvetsanity 21st Apr 2017, 8:53 PM edit delete reply

Rose, I actually prefer these scenes. Explosions are fun, but it's scenes like this where people fall in love with characters.
Combat Medic Z 22nd Apr 2017, 12:12 AM edit delete reply

Yes, very much appreciated. And I really like how we are learning a lot about Noctis.
Just_IDD 21st Apr 2017, 12:18 AM edit delete reply
This so cool. Ada is both debriefing and gathering information and relaxing her high strung guest. Ada is behaving so human and probably burning now logic paths at the same time.

mjkj 21st Apr 2017, 12:19 AM edit delete reply

Wow, nice... beautiful update...

Noctis cleans up nicely... =)

...and that is a great (almost) full body shot of her...

What a pity Ada is totally hidden behind her... =(

@alt text: *lol* - they are great together =D - but I do not see them anything other than friends...

Sheela 21st Apr 2017, 2:12 AM edit delete reply

It is a bit unfortunate that Ada is hidden, but there's still a chance of getting some nice shots of her - But since we hadn't seen a "barbie doll" shot before, Noctis is the more interesting one for now.

And Centcomm ? Much too late to do anti-shipping ... much, much too late!
Traszgo 22nd Apr 2017, 2:03 AM edit delete reply
Is it just me that finds it odd that even though she's a "Barbie doll", she still has a belly button?
Gilrandir 22nd Apr 2017, 2:36 AM edit delete reply
Well, @antrik made a comment to that effect earlier on this very page ...
megados 21st Apr 2017, 12:30 AM edit delete reply

American Crew Citrus (Mist?) Ada's thumb is in the way. LOL So many cool little details!
This has me missing Malati again. Yet. More. (Glory to her name) Noctis misses her.
Ada and Noctis are getting on well. (No, I am not shipping them.) They could get to be good friends, though.
Noctis looks striking with her hair back like that.
Sheela 21st Apr 2017, 2:13 AM edit delete reply

Aye, Malati is missed by many.

Including some Gladiators, possessing of square jaws and long flowing hair!
Tokyo Rose 21st Apr 2017, 8:12 AM edit delete reply

@Sheela

"Who will fling undergarments at us and make ribald comments from the stands now?" weep the gladiators of Nova Roma.
Sheela 21st Apr 2017, 10:39 AM edit delete reply

Oh, that's easy to answer .. Malati's fanclub will do it in her honor! :D

You just know, that she has a fanclub. XD

That would be interesting, @Sheela!

Her fan club extends to us readers as well.
sigpig 22nd Apr 2017, 9:50 AM edit delete reply

I'm part of her fanclub, but I don't think that the gladiators want MY undergarments... lol

That's what I thought too, sigpig!
DLKmusic 23rd Apr 2017, 1:52 AM edit delete reply

that's not a BELLY BUTTON, silly.. it's a data interface port.
Sheela 21st Apr 2017, 2:14 AM edit delete reply

Ha ha ha, good one.

And yeah, doesn't really make sense that she has a belly button, that's something for us biologicals to have.
Timotheus 21st Apr 2017, 2:26 AM edit delete reply

I don't know, all the Barbies I've seen had one. I think its some sort of tradition for doll torso casting to give them a navel.
velvetsanity 21st Apr 2017, 8:58 PM edit delete reply

Also, in daz, it's a simple matter to remove the other missing bits (genitals are actually an item that has to specifically be added to a body, like hair is), belly button takes more work

Sheela 22nd Apr 2017, 4:35 AM edit delete reply

Heh, that makes you think, don't it ?
What is Noctis thinking ?
What is Ada thinking ?
Was the soap dropped?

Noctis thinking to herself :

Noctis .oO : "It is a well known fact, that one should not drop ones soap in a prison shower."
Noctis .oO : "I'm in a possibly hostile city, in a bath with a possibly hostile unit."
Noctis .oO : "Well, ok, she's not very hostile, but she has the potential to be."
Noctis .oO : "Does this qualify ? Malati would say yes."
Noctis .oO : "Would dropping the soap trigger the much discussed upon response?"
Noctis .oO : "Ada does not have the required equipment, but she has shown to be resourceful."
Noctis .oO : "But ..."
Noctis .oO : "..."
Noctis .oO : "I .. I have to know!"

*drops soap*

Ada .oO : "Ahh, what a nice bath, and once TeeDee gets her ass here and gets debriefed I can finally show Kevin that little red lacy.."
Ada .oO : "Oh, Noctis dropped her soap ... wait .."
Ada .oO : "Why is she looking at me that way?"
Ada .oO : "Almost like she's expecting something?"
Ada .oO : "Nuuuu ... this is getting weird!"

*calls Centcomm via comm implant*

Ada : "Ceeentcooommm ... she's being weird!"
Centcomm : "Yes, and why did she drop the soap?"
Ada : "Wait, I didn't tell you about the soap!"
Centcomm : "There is much we don't know about our cassian visitor, continue observing her, Centcomm Actual out!"
Ada : "but .. I didn't tell you about the soooaaap!"

*static*

Ada .oO : "Dammit, I cannot believe Centcomm would put a surveilance camera in the showers!"
Ada .oO : "Well, I can, but still .. now where is it."
Ada .oO : "Ah, there it is, a quick stab and it'll be gone."

*stabby finger*

Noctis .oO : "Interesting, but confusing data has been gathered."
Noctis .oO : "Dropping the soap in a shower makes the enemy unit so angry that she attacks her own surveilance cameras."
Noctis .oO : "Malati would have been delighted."

I would bet that Noctis begins to question if Malati was right, she needed an upgrade to a more human model. If she becomes this close to Dolly she will ask Calliope to do the mods and devil take the hindermost.
Sheela 21st Apr 2017, 2:16 AM edit delete reply

Ah, but the devil is Dr. Silver, and she upgraded Ada and TeeDee.

Would Noctis be able to get over her fear of the Cyberpath to do it ?
Gilrandir 21st Apr 2017, 2:23 AM edit delete reply
Assuming Noctis wanted a new body ... (and why would she?) ... there's no reason to involve Dr. Silver. Dr. Silver was called in, as I recall, because Ada and TeeDee needed restoration from Q-drives and Ada, in particular, was a borderline case who had been flashed post-flatline. It is mentioned in a couple of places that normal chassis transfer takes place in a more controlled way using a hardline connection with significantly less risk. (Dolly's upload was more risky in particular because she was making a jump of many steps in one, and she was going to a prototype design.) But the idea of Noctis getting an NTAS body under anything even approaching the current circumstances ... would not seem to withstand any kind of scrutiny.
Centcomm 21st Apr 2017, 3:25 AM edit delete reply

No Noctis would not let Silver anywhere near her if she had a choice. and Noctis Likes her current body she has no use for a more human one dispite what anyone thinks but it is fun to wwatch you guys bandy it about :D
Rms2000 21st Apr 2017, 2:45 AM edit delete reply

I don't think it would be safe for Noctis, or any Cassian, to get a new body in NT. I mean, what are the chances that Cent would let an opportunity like that slide? A potentially unfriendly agent in a perfect position to act as a saboteur, spy or assassin getting a body upgrade in Her city? Is there even the slightest chance she wouldn't pull something?
megados 21st Apr 2017, 10:49 AM edit delete reply

The only reason I could come up with for Noctis to want a new body, would be to ditch the inhibitor, and she's so adept at getting around it, that it wouldn't be worth the hassle of getting used to a new body. She has her speed and accuracy dialed in, and after seeing Dolly's experience with injury and pain, wouldn't want any part of it, IMHO "One does not repair that which is not broken."
Gilrandir 21st Apr 2017, 11:13 AM edit delete reply
Some people prefer "phenomenal, cosmic power", even if it does come with "itty, bitty living space." ^_^
SeanR 21st Apr 2017, 2:49 PM edit delete reply
@Megados
Why would she want rid of the inhibitor? When the prince held her leash, sure, but she can rely upon Acantha to use her as she, herself, would advise, so there is no longer any conflict between her own morality, and her orders.

Agreed in general. Way too high a risk for a shiny new skin.
megados 21st Apr 2017, 3:24 PM edit delete reply

@SeanR
I agree that the inhibitor wouldn't be a compelling reason for her to change bodies, because even under Decimus, it didn't pose as much of an obstacle as changing bodies would. I mentioned it only because it was the sole reason I could think of for her to even consider it. Beyond that, she would likely consider a body change to be an unnecessary distraction.
mjkj 21st Apr 2017, 1:54 PM edit delete reply

As far as I understood it, the Cassians are not able to use the NT method of getting a new body - I think it was even implied they can not change their bodies at all...
Gilrandir 21st Apr 2017, 1:58 PM edit delete reply
Oh? I can understand the lack of desire to downgrade, but I don't recall any discussion of Cassian architecture outside of their Westworld-like inhibitors. Can you provide any kind of pointer, reference, or more detailed recollection? (This is not a challenge. I would just love to see any reliable data on Cassian architecture or origin which I may somehow have missed or overlooked.)

EDIT: I do remember some discussion of whether Cassians were Q-drive compatible and whether or not they could make pre-mission backups allowing them to be restored in the event their bodies were destroyed. The only upshot of that which I recall, though, was that for story reasons the creatrices didn't want Cassians to be unkillable, so they avoided the 'transporter dilemma' by forbidding backups. I didn't think that affected chassis transfers. As was pointed out, under non-emergency conditions, the Q-drive is not the typical mechanism for a chassis transfer.
mjkj 22nd Apr 2017, 3:59 AM edit delete reply

Sorry, Gil, I do not remember when that was, and I could also misremember...

I think it was when the discussion came to them having a port or not, to allow for transfer - but I do not remember for sure...

Gilrandir 22nd Apr 2017, 4:04 AM edit delete reply
I guess we'll just need to wait and see if it comes up in canon.
SeanR 21st Apr 2017, 2:51 PM edit delete reply

And THERE is a potential reason to involve Dr. Silver or Mrs. Taylor.
Doing the impossible the first time and laying the foundations for making it routine.
Sheela 21st Apr 2017, 8:55 PM edit delete reply

I agree, particularly Dr Silver seems adept at "getting around" obstacles.
Speedy Marsh 22nd Apr 2017, 9:05 PM edit delete reply
A possible reason for Noctis to need an NT body, would be if an attempt is made to assassinate Acantha, resulting in catastrophic damage to Noctis.

Noctis and Acantha will probably be in New Troy for a while. Acantha is about to get a mechanical heart, which will later be replaced by a lab grown heart. Then, she'll have to stick around for a while, for recovery. During that time, it's possible that one or more of the rich, corrupt people in Nova Roma, who prospered under Decimus' rule, will try to get rid of Acantha.

If Noctis is critically injured while protecting Acantha, than Acantha might ask Silver and Taylor to help. Noctis probably shouldn't be at all compatible with an NT body, but that's where Silver's cyberpathy would come into play. Silver's cyberpathy would be the missing link between Noctis' Nova Roman brain and one in a New Troy body.

Noctis would have to come to terms with being helped by a cyberpath, and with being stuck in an NT body. She wouldn't be able to trust her brain or her body, since Cent-Comm could have hidden something inside it that could turn Noctis into a Cent-Comm doll. Also, she would probably have more capability to experience emotions, which would hurt like hell, when she remembered all the people that Decimus made her murder.
Gilrandir 22nd Apr 2017, 9:31 PM edit delete reply
That's a possible plot direction, @Speedy Marsh. However, if we assume that Cassians cannot be flashed to Q-drives (an assumption, I grant you), then it would seem unlikely Noctis could possibly survive any injury so severe as to require a full body replacement and not be able to just wait until she can be returned to Nova Roma for more conventional repairs. And, if she can be flashed, then any injury so severe would probably just get her flashed, then reloaded on a new Cassian chassis back at Nova Roma, rather than experimenting with an inferior NTAS chassis. I am still assuming she will be getting some kind of backup from Nova Roma within a day or two -- even if no other Cassians are available. Surely Maxus would be able to find a 'special' or two he could spare?
megados 22nd Apr 2017, 10:00 PM edit delete reply

@Speedy Marsh, that's an interesting scenario. I take this to be a vehicle to force Noctis into needing Dr Silver. That's a tough one. Personally, I think Noctis could be reasoned with, if it is explained to her correctly, such as the difference between a cyberpath, and a cyberkinetic. Ada would be a good choice to explain it to her.

In the event that Noctis were unconscious, it would hit her like a ton of bricks when she wakes up! :D
HiFranc 21st Apr 2017, 2:29 AM edit delete reply

I suspect that this is the first time that Noctis has had to attend to her emotional needs. She's so used to looking after a city that she may have forgotten what it looks like to have time to look after herself.
Tokyo Rose 21st Apr 2017, 8:15 AM edit delete reply

Showing Noctis's flashback to the cyberpath incident as well as this scene is really giving us a chance to dig more into her psyche, and I'm enjoying the opportunity. :)
Wolfsbane 21st Apr 2017, 8:49 AM edit delete reply

This is a great side story, Rose. Thank you for telling it. It makes everything seem so full.

Except me. Urp. (Pass the popcorn, please)
megados 21st Apr 2017, 9:33 AM edit delete reply

I know I keep saying this, but at this time, Noctis arguably has the most freedom she has ever had. New Rome is in the hands of Maxus and Tennyo for the time being, there is no one presently to give her orders, so that leaves, as her sole responsibility, to keep Acantha from harm. What she says and does here will largely be her own persona, and not so much of things imposed on her by others, or duties she has to perform. It's a good opportunity to see more of the "real Noctis", unencumbered by most of her usual concerns..
Sheela 21st Apr 2017, 8:57 PM edit delete reply

Getting to delve further into the oddity that is the Cassians, does indeed make for a great story.

And even among Cassians, Noctis seems unusual, though some may argue that Malati was even more unusual, she managed to defy her own inhibitor and take her own life, which was considered impossible!
megados 22nd Apr 2017, 5:37 PM edit delete reply

They seem to be each unique in their own way, much as everyone is, but Cassian culture is, itself, by necessity, unique within the DC realm. Maybe it is an opportunity to differentiate the person from the Cassian.
Gilrandir 22nd Apr 2017, 5:52 PM edit delete reply
Why? What makes Cassian culture, or the Cassian situation so unique, in your opinion? Other androids have had to deal with core directives, inhibitor collars, and cruel owners. Other androids have been used as instruments of war and coercion before -- we have seen that in these very pages. Why do the Cassians get a free pass or a different set of standards than other androids?
megados 22nd Apr 2017, 6:26 PM edit delete reply

No free pass was implied, nor mentioned, and I apologize if I gave that impression. Different standards, possibly. While other androids may have experienced similar situations, with the Cassians, it is an institutionalized way of life for an entire subset of the android population. I don't think they know any other way of life. Their behavior is nurtured and encouraged, as in Noctis' affirmation of Tennyo's method of "demotion" of Adventus Albinus. Things like that speak to me of a different sort of culture . . . YMMV
Gilrandir 22nd Apr 2017, 8:18 PM edit delete reply
A different standard is a free pass. if the speed limit is 55 mph for trucks, and 65 mph for cars on a given stretch of roadway, then cars have a 'free pass' to drive at 60 mph, while a truck would be cited for identical behavior. Not that there is a never a good reason for different standards. A fire truck displaying lights and siren gets a free pass as far as a great many traffic laws go and I'm not objecting to that -- merely suggesting that we recognize and acknowledge it.

If a Cassian makes a 'Blood Eagle' out of a subversive at the command of their master, and then a New Troy mockingbird (equipped with inhibitor) is commanded to go out and make a 'Blood Eagle' out of someone that their master considers a threat shouldn't I (who am neither a citizen of Nova Roma nor New Troy) evaluate both of those acts according to a single, consistent set of standards?
megados 22nd Apr 2017, 9:25 PM edit delete reply

How to respond? Okay, let's say that your example of traffic behavior is absolutely the case in Country A. Recognized and acknowledged. Meanwhile, in country B, traffic behavior is a little different. Trucks and cars both are routinely both regularly seen going 70 MPH. The police don't care, they're overworked and underpaid, and they just don't feel it's worth it. The main thing is, it is perfectly normal to see people disobeying the speed limit. That becomes the norm in Country B, no matter how wrong Country A deems it to be. It is a different standard because it is a different driving culture.

A single mockingbird making a single Blood Eagle at the bidding of the master does not a culture make. A group such as the Cassians have collectively made countless Blood Eagles to the point that they compare their Blood Eagles, and that makes that the norm in their culture. They are constantly making Blood Eagles at the behest of their master, and it has always been that way. It is absolutely normal behavior for them. You would have to BE a Cassian to judge a Cassian. The standard they live by is the standard you have to judge them by, just as the standard YOU live by is the standard YOU want to be judged by.

That does not mean it is as free pass. If the drivers from Country B drive that way in Country A, they would be treated according to the norm in Country A.
Gilrandir 22nd Apr 2017, 9:35 PM edit delete reply
So, if they are from Country B, and I am from Country A, before I can decide whether I want to make friends with them I have to know In which country I am standing? ^_^ And, if I travel to the other country, my decision should change?

Also, why should Cassians and non-Cassian Nova Romans be judged differently. They are both from the same culture and under the same crushing heel of the Imperator. (Though, of course, they enjoy different rank and privileges within that culture.)
megados 22nd Apr 2017, 9:46 PM edit delete reply

Who you make friends with is up to you. If you only like people who obey speed laws, then don't befriend people people from Country B I guess?

Non Cassian Nova Romans don't spend their lives learning how to, and creating Blood Eagles. Cassian culture would be a subculture of overall Nova Roman culture.
DLKmusic 22nd Apr 2017, 11:47 PM edit delete reply

@Gilrandir and Megados: I'm not sure that the Cassian's culture could be considered Unique, even by today's standards... However, the amount of Culture shock that Noctis is just beginning to experience is tremendous.

"I come from a society where everyone, including myself, considers me a tool, not a person... what I do or don't do is the responsibility of the hand that wields that tool, and regardless of how I feel about it, I have no say in it...

Now I come to a society where I am considered a person, not a tool. Every action I take, every word I say, every thing I do, for good or bad, is now solely my responsibility."

No free passes for anyone, but this is the scenario that Noctis faces. I'm looking forward to seeing how she copes!
megados 22nd Apr 2017, 11:59 PM edit delete reply

@DLKmusic, your description of what Noctis' perspective might be seems to be accurate. I pretty much agree.

As far as Cassian culture, though, you don't think it's unique within the DC universe?
Gilrandir 23rd Apr 2017, 12:11 AM edit delete reply
I agree with you, @DLKmusic, about the magnitude of the cultural difference. I'm not sure I agree with you about the 'sole responsibility', since you seem to be disregarding the inhibitor as an external influence -- which I don't think was your previous position. Certainly, as long as it remains quiescent, its impact is minimal.

Of course the culture shock is minimized if you subscribe to the notion of an objective Reality, rather than a Subjective one. Because then, of course, what other people do or don't 'consider' about anything affects them and their actions, but it doesn't in any way change the fundamental Reality of the situation. Whatever you were before, you're precisely the same now, it's just that other people are looking at you differently.
DLKmusic 23rd Apr 2017, 12:54 AM edit delete reply

@Megados: In the past history of the DC universe, my answer is it may have unique aspects, but it is not unique. for the Present DC universe, we have some understanding of Troy and of Rome, but only glimpses of Shinedo, almost nothing of Sparta and Luna to judge by, and Nothing of anything else, so there's no way to say yeay or nay.

@Gilrandir: I'm not discounting the Inhibitor, although I believe it's effects would be minimal currently, and I don't think that Noctis is willing to Leave Acantha's side for any longer than she has to. On a subjective level though, if Acantha DID order Noctis to go on a killing spree in New Troy and destroy everything in her path until something finally stopped her, In Roma Acantha would bear sole responsibility for giving such an order, but in Troy Noctis would be responsible for everything she does in the process of obeying it. that is a huge difference. Putting it in a modern (Ideal) perspective, if a Mob Boss puts a hit out on someone, Both the Mob Boss and the Hit-Man are guilty of Murder.

Further, anything Noctis does that is not by direct order, inhibitor or no, she will bear sole responsibility for the consequences of actions/decisions/words/whatever... which might include something like the murder of a person not authorized to enter Acantha's room after ignoring any warnings Noctis might have given (which is actually a very reasonable hypothetical). In this scenario, even though it wouldn't be neccessary in Noctis case, is something the inhibitor would compel her to do... protect Acantha at all costs... in this case, Acantha would be completely blameless, sole responsibility is on Noctis (and technically Cent-comm, who stated that she offered full cooperation for the safety and well being of Acantha 3 pages ago).

Your point about objective reality is well taken however. The core person that you are under "A" circumstances is the same person you are under "B" circumstances.
Ebonbolt 23rd Apr 2017, 4:00 AM edit delete reply

@DLKmusic: Actually, Mob Boss would be guilty of "conspiracy to commit murder," a more serious charge, while Hit-Man gets both Murder-1 & Conspiracy charges. A case might be argued against blaming an inhibitor-shackled individual for the results of direct orders (irresistible coercion), although the case of your hypothetical intruder might be cause for charges if there were other means short of lethal force to halt said intruder. Otherwise, it's just defense of another, which is her current specific job description; inhibitor questions wouldn't even play into that hearing.

@Gilrandir: While we do live in an objective reality, the reality we perceive, and thus act upon, is subjective. Given that taking our country B person to country A would not inherently change them, new experiences & information there could cause them to change; new perspective, new subjective reality. Reformatting your understanding of the world is a heck of a shock. Noctis, so far, has had very little in the way of upsetting perspective changes (Ada's insubordination is probably the biggest); mostly she's just stretching her borders a bit. But the potential is there for massive culture shock. Remember Lynn's culture shock in New Rome, and recall that the Cassians are a rather separate group from most other residents of that city-state.
Gilrandir 23rd Apr 2017, 8:44 AM edit delete reply
I agree, @Ebonbolt, that New Troy culture and ideas are very different from Nova Roma culture and ideas. Exposure to new and different ideas may cause significant and substantial changes in a person's understanding and worldview. I think Noctis has already shown some familiarity with NTAS (probably from intelligence briefings and 60 years of life experience) beyond that which Lynn showed for New Rome. However, I'm also confident that second-hand and distorted reports will necessarily lack the same impact and fidelity of first-hand experience.
antrik 23rd Apr 2017, 12:18 PM edit delete reply
@Ebonbolt I'd say the way Ada (and even Anne in their short interaction) treat Noctis is quite a bit of a culture shock as well; and also Troy's reliance on Androids and Bots for all sorts of things -- even if she heard rumours about it, it's still quite a shock to her to experience it first-hand...
DLKmusic 23rd Apr 2017, 2:03 PM edit delete reply

@Ebonbolt: You are correct about "Conspiracy" of course, but it doesn't negate my point. As far as the hypothetical though, it's not that I think Noctis would be charged in such an event (unless politics become a factor, then all bets, and all reason, get handily thrown out the window), but the actions in this case are ones that Noctis does bear full responsibility for.
megados 23rd Apr 2017, 9:19 AM edit delete reply

@DLKmusic, my take on the Cassians' cultural uniqueness is based on not having seen any other institutionalized guardian/terror/hit squads anywhere else in story. As a group, their collective mindset seems different.

@Gilrandir and DLKmusic, for all intents and purposes, right now it seems we can disregard Noctis' inhibitor. No one can legally give Noctis any order at this time; Noctis' guardianship of Acantha is by Noctis and Maxus' decision. She is not bound to protect the Livius line as Kali was, only the throne, and Nova Roma, and currently, no one is seated on the throne. She is guardian to Acantha only by her decision and agreement at this time. Right now, she is pretty much free to do as she pleases. Her inhibitor is irrelevant because none of its conditions are in play here. She is responsible for her own actions.

I believe that her presence in New Troy is out of loyalty, sense of duty, and what she presently believes that duty to be. By this, she is honoring both Acantha and Maxus. It is her belief in Acantha, not obligation, that has her here. AFAIK, she is not forced by inhibitor or command to do so.
antrik 23rd Apr 2017, 12:10 PM edit delete reply
As Acantha is heir to the throne, I'm pretty sure the inhibitor does in fact compel Noctis to protect Acantha.

Having said that, since we haven't really been given a clear consistent explanation of how the inhibitors make decisions, we can't really deduce much about what effect it might have on Noctis's actions in this, or any other specific situation...
megados 23rd Apr 2017, 12:19 PM edit delete reply

I agree, she is, but until she actually takes the throne, she really isn't presently part of the directive. Maxus would be the next logical person to be seated on the throne (pending Senate confirmation) as Acantha is not of legal age. So if we are to go by that, she should be protecting Maxus. Maxus, as Lord Regent, (again being confirmed by the Senate) would be the next one seated, whether Acantha is there or not. When she comes of age, Acantha herself would have to approved by the Senate (though that would probably be just a formality)
antrik 23rd Apr 2017, 12:35 PM edit delete reply
Is a regent considered to be actually seated on the throne? My assumption would be, no -- but then again, I don't exactly know much about this sort of stuff...
Gilrandir 23rd Apr 2017, 12:59 PM edit delete reply
(Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer and have never lived under a hereditary monarchy.)

As I understand it, a regent never sits on the throne, but speaks for the throne. So, if there were currently a regent, any words of theirs would be treated as if coming from the throne, whether or not the throne was occupied. (One of the reasons why ruling monarchs don't have regents -- it could get confusing having a big, fancy chair with Multiple Personality Disorder. ^_^) There is currently no regent, as the Nova Roman Senate has not confirmed anyone to act in that role.

The throne, the previous occupant having died with a formally accepted heir in place, is occupied by Acantha -- however, she does not wear the crown, since the Senate has not approved her accession to ruling power. I believe the way the creatrices are handling this is that she is entitled to all the protections, precedence, and established privileges of the throne, but she may not make any state decisions. (E.g., she can tell the palace staff what to serve for dinner, but she can't raise taxes.) Any pronouncements she makes are treated as if they came "from the general direction of the Throne, more or less, but not technically directly from the Throne". This would imply that, if someone wanted to ignore or disobey it, they have legal standing to do so, but they'd probably be burning lots of political bridges in the process and very likely putting the noose around their own neck when she finally does receive the crown. Of course she still enjoys all the personal power and command of the sole remaining scion of House Livius, which likely does not need Senate confirmation.

Just my conjectures, of course.
megados 23rd Apr 2017, 1:32 PM edit delete reply

You could be right, @Gilrandir, and if so, that would make Noctis' only inhibitor-related concern to be maintaining Acantha's safety, which she would do regardless. Were it not a condition, I still don't think Noctis would abandon Acantha. Either way we get there, the result seems to be the same. I don't fully understand the machinations of the New Rome political system, and can sometimes be confused. I am satisfied that Noctis' goal is to keep Acantha from harm.

Having said that, Noctis otherwise has more or less complete freedom. That was basically my point. She is responsible for her own actions. If Acantha were to order her to go out and cause mayhem, (which would be ridiculously unlikely), I believe Noctis would be able to, (and probably would), refuse. It would be in no one's best interests to perform a wood chipper impression in New Troy, unless it is to protect Acantha.

What she does and says are mostly her own choices to make. Just my 2¢
antrik 23rd Apr 2017, 5:49 PM edit delete reply
I'm not sure it's actually ridiculously unlikely: it seems quiet plausible to me that Acantha might have gone insane from the trauma...

Of course it might be argued that the inhibitor might recognise that following the order is actually harmful to the Throne of Roma -- but if that were the case, it could have stopped some of the insane orders given by Decimus as well...

This is why I treat the inhibitors as a wildcard: we really don't know how they think.
megados 23rd Apr 2017, 7:00 PM edit delete reply

I have a differing opinion on this. We actually DO have a good idea of how the inhibitor works. We have examples of what it does and does not do. Additionally, Noctis really is under no obligation to follow Acantha's orders until she is seated on the Throne, which she is not. It is totally up to Noctis whether or not she wishes to obey. Noctis would obey anything Acantha wishes on her own volition out of loyalty, but she really only has one possible forced duty right now, as Gilrandir and yourself pointed out: to protect Acantha. She would do that regardless however, as her plan was to get Acantha seated in place of Decimus in the first place. I still also maintain it would be very extremely unlikely for Acantha to give such an order anyway. In a delirium maybe . . . Acantha doesn't strike me as batshit crazy.

As far as the inhibitor goes, as far as I can ascertain, only acts if she fails to act to protect Nova Roma, or the Throne and whoever is seated in it, as well as failure to obey lawful orders. Acantha is not yet in a lawful position to issue one.

antrik 24th Apr 2017, 1:03 AM edit delete reply
@guest1 obviously the inhibitors are not "absolute" -- that was kinda my point.

I assume that the Troy android you refer to is Kelly -- but she didn't get around any inhibitor. Officer Ray took off the inhibitor. She was later arguing against her core directives to allow her to kill -- this is not really the same thing.

As for the Cassians, I'm not sure which three you are referring to -- there were four that might qualify, depending on how you look at it. Kali didn't really get around her inhibitor, though: it was specifically programmed to shut off in this situation. Malati was able to fight it to some degree by pure willpower. Mariposa was forced to keep going in spite of the inhibitor, which really poses more questions than it answers. Noctis was able to outsmart it to some degree -- which is the only really interesting case IMHO.
Gilrandir 23rd Apr 2017, 10:33 PM edit delete reply
@megados, I did not point out (and do not subscribe to) the theory that Noctis has only one duty. That is a conclusion of yours based on some data and (in my opinion) some assumptions you are making to which I will not stipulate. I am reserving judgement and hoping for more data.
megados 23rd Apr 2017, 11:06 PM edit delete reply

"I believe the way the creatrices are handling this is that she is entitled to all the protections, precedence, and established privileges of the throne".

I took this to mean that you feel Noctis has a mandate to protect Acantha. I did not intend to infer that you assert it is the only one. In review, I can see where it might be taken that way. Unfortunate wording on my part. The intended meaning was that you and antrik made me consider the possibility that Noctis is still mandated to protect Acantha.
Gilrandir 24th Apr 2017, 1:04 AM edit delete reply
I do agree that, in my opinion, Noctis' duty (as enforced by her inhibitor) includes protecting Acantha from harm. But I could easily be wrong.
antrik 24th Apr 2017, 1:27 AM edit delete reply
@megados we do have examples of inhibitors at work, but no consistent framework to make extrapolations.

The situation with Minx was pretty clear: the inhibitor was more or less just executing direct orders. The Cassian situation is way more tricky though, as the inhibitors are enforcing a rather abstract duty -- and while we have seen some examples how it does or doesn't work, they do not really add up IMHO. There was Word of God IIRC that the inhibitors are not privy to the bearer's intentions, but rather just analyse the immediate sensory input as well as the motor commands from the synth-brain, and override the latter if deemed inappropriate. But how does the inhibitor judge inappropriate motor commands?

Mariposa's case is *relatively* clear I guess, if we assume the inhibitor had enough information to know that she was indeed going for the Prince, not someone else. But how did Malati's inhibitor know that she was trying to abort the mission? More generally, how can the inhibitor judge any kind of non-trivial behaviour? If the inhibitor makes it's own calls, doesn't it mean that anything a Cassian does, can really be only as smart as the inhibitor is? And if so, what's the point of them having a synth-brain at all, rather than just being simple bots?...

To be honest, the whole question of the Cassian inhibitors feels like a big looming plot hole to me... Of course we *might* yet get a consistent explanation -- but thus far, we haven't been given any as far as I'm aware.
megados 24th Apr 2017, 8:00 AM edit delete reply

@Gilrandir, I have to admit to that possibility.

@antrik, It is impossible for me to know how much you may or may not have gleaned from the story. For me, the inhibitor operation seems more clear; I will leave it at that. I have typed way too much on the subject already in previous comments on previous pages, and the Tech page gives you a good starting point to figure out how it "knows" things.

It was Columbina, not Mariposa whose head Noctis was forced to cut off. We never did get a definitive answer as to what happened to Mariposa.

antrik 24th Apr 2017, 4:36 PM edit delete reply
Right, Columbina -- sorry.

Regarding inhibitors, I just checked the description on the tech page to be sure, and it really just confirms my present understanding. It doesn't give a satisfactory explanation how an inhibitor can appropriately judge non-trivial behaviour.
megados 24th Apr 2017, 4:56 PM edit delete reply

The rest of it comes from in-story examples, and discussion in the comments. Everyone has their own opinion on it. They aren't all that complicated. In basic terms, it is located on the MACCS, and can monitor all the traffic there. It can tell whether traffic conforms to what conditions it is programmed for. It is a conditional logic device. The Creative Duo sprinkles hints, and gives us the chance to use our heads. ;)
antrik 25th Apr 2017, 4:33 PM edit delete reply
The problem I see, is coming up with "conditions" that are not trivial to circumvent, yet are not a constant obstacle. Or put another way: how can it enforce "compliant" behaviour, without effectively making all the calls, thus rendering the actual brain meaningless?

One way would be for the inhibitor to read the wearer's intentions -- but we are explicitly told this is not the case.

The only other plausible explanation I can think of, is if the wearer can actually "argue" with the inhibitor, making the case why the actions are indeed compliant in non-obvious ways. Malati pretending that she has been severely damaged by Irene, can be read as a strong hint in that direction I guess -- but then again, it's the only one we ever got as far as I can tell... And I'm not even sure this would be sufficient to entirely resolve the apparent paradox.

I think Noctis is starting to think of Ada as a surrogate sister.
Tokyo Rose 21st Apr 2017, 8:16 AM edit delete reply

Noctis's understanding of "sisterhood" includes killing people together. Ada might not approve. :D
Gilrandir 21st Apr 2017, 10:26 AM edit delete reply
??? This comment puzzles me, @Tokyo Rose. I would expect Ada considers her bond with TeeDee to be at least as tight as any bond between Cassians, and that includes moments like this. ("Comic 1287 - One Chance") There are probably other aspects of the job of which she wouldn't approve, but then that would be why she gravitated to S&R, rather than MIL-SEC, right? ^_^
Gilrandir 21st Apr 2017, 11:23 AM edit delete reply
I don't know why I am so scatterbrained that my own comments provoke questions from me, but there is a question that I hope Ada asks somewhere in this sequence because it seems like it would be very in-character for Ada and the response may (or may not) tell us something about both Noctis and Roman society.

Who does the S&R work for Nova Roma?

Wev've seen lots of police. Culturally, they seem like they'd be disposed to local volunteer fire brigades organized among the human citizens. The Church provides medical expertise (doctors and nurses). But where do the ambulance drivers and EMTs come from and who budgets for them?
Timotheus 22nd Apr 2017, 1:05 PM edit delete reply

In classical Rome such work, such as it was, was done by slaves or contract labor. Fire brigades, ambulance bearers, and local security were all contracted services, a sort of "pay for play" set up.
In Nova Roma I'd suspect it would either be a branch of the military or fire services (if they had anything like it at all). It would probably just be part of their normal service duties and not a special branch.
megados 21st Apr 2017, 12:30 PM edit delete reply

When you think about it, while the relationship between TeeDee and Ada is a little similar, they don't have that back and forth one-upmanship of kill ratios and kind of friendly competition the Cassians do. The Cassians relate to each other on more of the same level. In contrast, there is TeeDee being irritated at Ada's insistence to go non-lethal, while Ada has a hard time understanding TeeDee's insistence on it. Not that their relationship suffers from it, it is just a little different. Noctis and her sisters go out looking for their targets, while TeeDee and Ada deal with those issues as they crop up in the performance of their S&R duties. It makes sense that Ada might have a hard time fully understanding or approving of the Cassian sisterhood, just because of her nature.
Gilrandir 21st Apr 2017, 12:44 PM edit delete reply
I interpret the dynamic rather differently, but I suppose you could be right. My track record for such things is rather poor.
megados 21st Apr 2017, 1:30 PM edit delete reply

It may be my fault, Gilrandir. I sometimes fail at clarity. In basic terms, (which I probably should have tried in the first place), S&R is involved in saving as many lives as possible, where the Cassians' function is, at times, going out and taking lives. Ada is very much against taking life even where necessary.
Gilrandir 21st Apr 2017, 1:50 PM edit delete reply
"Fault" is not the issue. You look at the pages and read the dialogue and develop an interpretation of events and personalities which allows you to make predictions and observations about the story as it unfolds. I do likewise -- it is just that my predictions and interpretations are often demonstrated to be erroneous as the story continues to unfold or the creatrices offer clarifying commentary. My errors are in no way attributable to your different interpretation.

However, I would like to point out that the bond between sisters is a very different thing from whatever the sisters happen to be doing. Even though I agree with you that Ada would not want to be a Cassian and would not care to do many of the things they are called upon to do, I do think her bond with TeeDee is very similar to (for example) Noctis' bond with Malati; and, I think Ada is well aware of the fact that having that bond sometimes means that when your sister is killing people, it means you need to be right there on the firing line with them. Which was why @Tokyo Rose's comment puzzled me.
megados 21st Apr 2017, 2:00 PM edit delete reply

If it's any consolation, my predictions and interpretations are often demonstrated to be erroneous as well. :)

I would prefer you make as few errors as possible, that I might better learn from your example. ^_^
Tokyo Rose 21st Apr 2017, 6:36 PM edit delete reply

@Gilrandir

Ada understands, however reluctantly, the need for lethal violence to prevent further harm or death in a combat situation. The Cassians carry out assassinations, which means that sometimes, they go into houses or other places where the target thinks they're safe and demonstrate that safety is an illusion when there are dedicated deathdroids on your trail.
Gilrandir 21st Apr 2017, 7:16 PM edit delete reply
Understood. I am sure Ada would disapprove of death squads, using not only assassination but terror tactics as a way to quell public dissent, and extra-judicial murder. And, for a significant period of time, that has been a significant and unavoidable part of being a Cassian.

It is (in my opinion) no part of being a sister, unless your sister happens to be a Cassian. Your original comment, I interpreted to be about sisterhood, rather than Cassian-hood, and I was just pointing out that Ada had already shown her understanding of what sisterhood meant, even when things get violent. I suspect Ada approves of sisterhood, disapproves of the unsavory bits of Cassian-hood, and is cautiously reserving judgement about Noctis. ^_^

I would suspect that Noctis views Ada as a ramped down version of Malati. She is a BFF who will do what is needed including kill to cover your back and save you. She understands intellectually Ada is committed to getting things done peacefully even when it requires more effort. She doesn't understand why but she respects her for it. Given time she will ponder the dilemma and conclude possibly she needs some emotions to understand the reasons why.

Well, it seems Noctis has shown (somewhat) more emotions ever since Prince Headcase's demise. Might be a coincidence (with all the unusual stuff going on), or it might not. Another possibility I considered, is that the cyberpath episode might have been what triggered her stoicism. Or she might always have been like that. We don't know -- yet :-)
antrik 22nd Apr 2017, 6:50 PM edit delete reply
@Dragonrider it seems strange to me to compare Ada's mentality to Malati's. Malati actually enjoyed violence (at least when it was for a "rightful" cause); while Ada despises it, even when she knows it's unavoidable.

As for Noctis, I believe we have seen more than one hint that while she tries to be dispassionate about violence, she does actually dislike it. In sparing Aurelia, she *did* indeed take extra effort.
Ebonbolt 23rd Apr 2017, 5:05 AM edit delete reply

@antrik: Disregarding their respective views on violence, Ada & Malati do in fact have readily comparable personalities:
1) They both enjoy their work and their relationship with their coworkers; both are playful, as the situation allows. Ada (by my read) likes helping people, likes the challenges her job offers, and likes teasing Teedee. Malati enjoyed the violence of her job, and liked harassing Noctis & others (sense of humor, however warped).
2) Both are capable of incredible willfulness and extreme self sacrifice in pursuing what they believe is right. Malati chose to self terminate rather than follow an order enforced by hard-wired programming. Ada, who hates violence, resorted to brutal and final violent action to prove her point... and stop further violence. Also, she nearly died trying to make sure Teedee & Dr. Demark survived.

Certainly, they aren't the identical, nor even very close to it. But Noctis is in a unique position to see marked similarities, particularly in their behavior toward herself.
antrik 23rd Apr 2017, 12:29 PM edit delete reply
Impressive job finding some remarkable parallels there... Yet there are enough diametrical differences that I don't think Noctis could ever consider her a "version of Malati" -- just another unlikely friend :-)

Thanks for the post. As I stated Noctis would see Ada as a very Tamped down version of malati. Ada for example would never throw panties to a participant is a sporting event unless it was to get a reaction from TeeDee. She would however, throw herself at her boyfriend and lock the doors.

Yeah, Noctis has to wrestle with some big feels right around now.

She hasn't really had the downtime to process what have happened, apart from the flight itself, which would be a poor conductor for introspection.
megados 22nd Apr 2017, 5:46 PM edit delete reply

That is true, Sheela. A lot has happened in a short time; that's going to be a lot of weight to shift.

I get the impression Noctis feels a bit steam-rolled by Ada's friendliness...
DLKmusic 22nd Apr 2017, 11:39 PM edit delete reply

I tend to agree, Antrik. The openness that Ada is showing is completely contrary to her own experience with Androids... and something that has been anathama to her own sanity and survival for a long time.

I have a feeling Noctis is going to pop open some emotional scars during her stay in Nova Ilium. Added to the events (& emotional wounds) of the previous 24 hours, she might need a vacation to handle the emotional issues. Or a psychiatrist.
megados 23rd Apr 2017, 9:49 AM edit delete reply

. . . or Ada! ;)
HeSerpenty 23rd Apr 2017, 4:42 AM edit delete reply

Ada gonna be Noctis' new sistah <3333

Haha it's great to get these two together they couldn't be more opposite than one another!

so very very true!

Wait till TeeDee, Acantha and Lynn get into the act.

Seems ADA is being the healer without really realizing it. She has managed to get Noctis to do the closest thing to showing emotion. that "...Regrettable" quote is something Noctis would under normal situations not said.
antrik 24th Apr 2017, 1:39 AM edit delete reply
I'd say this choice of words is actually quite in line with her ordinary demeanour. She has used these kinds of adjectives before -- it's just that she uses them as if they were statements of fact, rather then expressions of feeling.

What is more significant IMHO is that Ada constantly makes her pause...
