So Ophie comes closer to her goal of getting herself verified...

I like how she is straightforward with her opinion...

I wonder what the result of her examination will be... *hopes the best for her*
megados 13th Jan 2021, 6:48 AM edit delete reply

I think she'll be OK, and the worst of it might be some artifact subroutines from the Commander Pauline body :D
HiFranc 13th Jan 2021, 2:22 AM edit delete reply

I take it that Illyana actually knows who every person is?

I wonder how Ophelia will feel about New Troy at the end of this trip?

That's "Lady of negotiable virtue", feelie ;)

Very nice, except the colours on that sign are so hard to read.
I cleaned my glasses and squinted before I figured out it was barcode over the bottom letters and not more words...
I imagine it would be striking in real life.
Just_IDD 13th Jan 2021, 5:22 AM edit delete reply
Yes, the blurred strobbing letters are just like you have been struck in the head.
Some Ed 13th Jan 2021, 10:50 AM edit delete reply
I find that most people have somewhat negotiable virtues.

I don't really mean to argue. I mean, she's clearly a Lady. I'm just saying the rest of your description is probably not anywhere close to as descriptive as you intended.

If you have a different opinion on the matter... think about the last time your boss asked you to do something that you felt was wrong. Did you do it? What about the time before that?

If you're self-employed or otherwise have nobody obviously above you, substitute "major customer" for boss.
Oldarmourer 13th Jan 2021, 1:36 PM edit delete reply
I used to tell my co-workers "everyone has their price, pray you don't find out what yours is"
And no, I argued and took it beyond them if I had to...
That's probably why I ended up retiring long after most people did but still before I wanted to ;)
Scruples can be an affliction and a curse, but a liveable one.

I had a boss that wanted me to sign my name on falsifyied customs forms and I refused. I said we should just pay the duty since it was less than the fine would be. I was overruled my boss signed it, the Server they tried to claim was a component was held in customs for 2 months getting it straightened out. It cost 3 times what the original duty plus all of that lost time. I started looking for a new job the same day.

Claiming a new server (110 lbs) is a warranty replacement powersupply (3 lbs) might have worked in the 90's but it sure wasn't going to slip by 10 years later.

I'm really glad I wont have any issues visiting that country in the future, and I do travel internationally.

Ophelia is getting a look at something that few from NR ever see. Pay attention Feelie!

"Solutions Plus" is certainly a happy sounding name! :D

Hey, I love this comic, been reading for years. But as a professional s*x worker I'm a little offended at the presumption of occupation based on attire, and the use of a slur in describing a full service s*x worker. Can we not propagate harmful stereotypes?
Deoxy 13th Jan 2021, 8:50 AM edit delete reply
For a great number of people "hooker" is not a slur, simply the word they know and use for those in your profession (without being "clinical" and using the term "prostitute").

It's at least a far less pejorative term than, say, "ho" or "whore". Considering that a great many people consider the profession itself (no matter the name) pejorative, that seems to be about as good as it can realistically get.
Morituri 17th Jan 2021, 5:03 PM edit delete reply
Raise a glass to the memory of General Joseph Hooker, who recruited and paid salaries to a coterie of "soiled doves" for the sake of maintaining the morale of his troops in the US Civil War.

The world has never forgotten his name. Although a whole lot of the world tends to forget the General himself.
Morituri 17th Jan 2021, 5:11 PM edit delete reply
Joseph Hooker was apparently of the opinion that the ladies in question had an honorable profession and that the care and emotional support the soldiers got was absolutely vital to maintaining their sanity.

The friendly-friction part of the job is harmless and a good stress relief, but the talk, kindness, and human connection is actually important and he felt that the troops were sadly in need of it on campaign.
Centcomm 18th Jan 2021, 2:09 PM edit delete reply

Its not meant as a insult to anyone in Rl you should know us by not. we propagate nothing. Good bad or the ugly., some characters will have insulting personalities. and there words will not be censored or cushioned. Im not a fan of SJW or 'whatever you want to call it.' Ophelia is calling her a hooker. Would the girl in aqua be offended.. probably not. They are called many things in different cities. Roma tends to be "blunt" when it comes to sex workers. In New troy they are called everything from "Joygirls" to Barbie dolls. Minx doesn't care what Shes called .. and i apologize if you are offended but thems the breaks.
Sheela 19th Jan 2021, 4:42 AM edit delete reply

Minx don't care WHAT she's being called, as long as it's Officer Ray that's calling her. 😁

This place is not named like a technical consulting and engineering firm ... it is named like a watering hole and after-hours gathering place. Think about it: “Solutions Plus”! Various solutions, plus peanuts, pretzels and canned music are available. They even prominently display that they adhere to the bar code. ^_^

“Everyone looks forward to visiting Prometheus Sector! Come to Solutions Plus and get your solutions, plus!”
Sheela 16th Jan 2021, 2:19 AM edit delete reply

Hey, a lot of perfectly good tech companies have sprung into existence from some scriblings on the back of a napkin from the local watering hole.

Also .. "Bar Code" .. nice. 😁

I love this comic. I wanted to let you know that there seem to be some security issues with the website. (I'm on an up to date Mac).

FireFox: back and forth buttons don't render, and sometimes main image won't render.

Chrome: I get an NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID error.
Just_IDD 15th Jan 2021, 3:37 AM edit delete reply
The cert error problem is coming from Comic-Rocket. Their free certificate from lets-encrypt is not able to be run cross domain became Lets Encrypt issues CAA certs only. That is why you are getting a domain mismatch error.

It may be possible to load the image with a non-secure url but then have the link be secure to their site.

The other issue is CR doES not include the FULL certificate chain with their cert, so browsers like my phone, which has the cert on the phone and not in the browser, don't recognize the validity of the cert.

It is possible to install certs into an android device to fix the intermediate link error.

Hardly any cert providers make their intermediate chain downloadable other than by their Customer which I find really annoying because then upgrades can't be done by anyone.

comic serendipitously appeared today but it's probably too big for the page so here's a link instead...

I prefer "professional dancer". ;)
Sheela 16th Jan 2021, 2:16 AM edit delete reply

Exotic Dancer ?
Sleel 17th Jan 2021, 12:24 AM edit delete reply

Nor sure how dancing on a dick makes you a 'professional dancer'. Pretty sure every person in an actual professional dance troupe would take issue with being lumped in with someone whose 'dancing' involves writhing on a dick.
Morituri 17th Jan 2021, 5:30 PM edit delete reply
I sort of object to that. Masquerading as dancers, masseusses, actors, and every other ... term that's something between a euphemism and an outright lie ... denotes, to me, shame and hypocrisy and deception and, ultimately, corruption.

When terms like that start going around, it means I'm in a place where this is something that everyone's ashamed of, but not so ashamed of it they won't do it. It means there are a lot of people whose lives depend on these fragile lies, but everybody knows it's a lie, and that leaves them open to blackmail and abuse by anyone who can threaten to strip the lie away.

It used to be the case that you could open up the phone book in any city where prostitution was illegal - which was, at the time, most of them - and just find them in the phone book. Hundreds and hundreds of ads, blatantly advertising things that were not in fact dances, massages, etc, and had nothing to do with finding work acting.

And each and every ad, as far as I saw it, meant the police had to be on the take. So if your police take bribes to allow this to go on, what else do they take bribes for? If they're getting paid off, and the city council knows it - and let's face it, how could they NOT know it - then how many of the city council are taking bribes too?

And of course this implies that the police have become a weapon in the wars of crooks, because the police don't want their bribes drying up and will protect the houses. And a weapon against any independent competitors and any who step out of line from what the houses want them to do....

Masseuse, Actress, Dancer.... *spit*. These mistitles are the symptoms of a diseased society.
Deoxy 19th Jan 2021, 9:50 AM edit delete reply
No reason to assume they are "on the take", simply that they don't enforce dumb laws when they can get away with it, especially ones that are (inherently) going to be enforced VERY unevenly if any attempt is made.

Sex work is one of those things I find to be hard to deal with, in terms of moral framework. It is immoral (for several reasons that I won't get into here and many of you won't agree with), but the state should NOT be involved, as there is no possibility of them ever truly getting rid of it, not to mention that it's an area the state generally no longer regulates in any other capacity (sexual contact between consenting adults).

That leaves only shame/general society disapproval as the mechanisms for discouraging it, and while those mechanisms are both very powerful and used *all the dang time* without complaint on so many other topics, it does have secondary consequences, especially when the behaviour is also technically illegal (even if the enforcement is ridiculously, obscenely uneven).

And of course, there are the obvious ways around the laws (film it, and it's "acting", for just the most obvious - is that nice dinner and an expensive gift a "date" or payment?), which makes a mockery of the whole thing.

I don't think our society is in the worst position possible on this topic... but not from lack of trying to be.
Deoxy 19th Jan 2021, 9:53 AM edit delete reply
Oh, and let me just agree (to a large extent) with your last line, in particular. I got a massage in a country where prostitution was legal, and it was *so nice* to go to a "masseuse" and know that's all you were going for!
Morituri 19th Jan 2021, 3:39 PM edit delete reply

I'm a little bit passionate about my belief that laws that are routinely unenforced, or enforced very unevenly, are laws in need of repeal. They're basically a license for the police to abuse the people who do whatever it is, as much as they want in any way they want.

I've seen the way sex workers are treated by the police around where I live, and it's abusive to a degree I find offensive and incredible. If the cop doesn't get exactly what s/he wants from them, starting with silently standing through barrages of casually obscene verbal abuse and going downhill from there, they get arrested.

I do assume they're on the take. They don't hesitate to make petty demands on the workers. I haven't been around to hear them ask for money, but it would surprise me to learn they're not taking any.
