Oh My!*
"A little Gizmo..."
Somebody must have got it wet and given it a midnight snack.
(Good thing Mira exposed it to bright light!)

Heh, Gremlings, haven't seen that in forever.

Sadly I got layed off again and looking for work m'self again, and I'm in Texas. A place almost as deadly hot as AZ in the summer. Though in the computer field there seems at least a little better market for jobs. So I feel you pain.

But for comment on the tale thus far, It does seem Cent did what the Shogun did to Anjin-san in the book. Allowed him to build a boat to go back home but as soon as the boat was almost done it mysteriously burnt down. Where the Shogun was dutifly saddened and gladdly refunded anjin-san to build a new boat only to burn that one down.

Cent is "Helping" Blue and Calliope by letting this "Secret" mission happen. Yet all the while I think she has no intention of allowing blue anywhere close to nova roma as it would jeopardize too much. So it's conveniently sad the old ship just couldn't go the whole distance. The S&R to get the doc was the only real mission. to verify it was nova roma buying the cutters. Cent only needs to seem to be helping to keep the elder taylor from getting her head on straight and asking real questions. Cent likes the way she runs everything and is not a shareing kind of AI. But I think she is the opposite of the idiot of nova roma. She just hides her extreme way better. Her only mistake was and is still the underestimation of dolly. I think if Cent knew the full extent of how things are getting beyond her control she would have to get more adversely involved. For both Dolly and Ceci are far beyond anything Cent could collate. An apple once bitten , is forever.
cattservant 15th May 2013, 2:24 AM edit delete reply

CeCi is quite likely to be having a crisis with her <Protocols> real soon.
Sheela 15th May 2013, 5:27 AM edit delete reply

Not to mention that Dolly's new body had a bunch of features that CentComm had bever even heard of before. Seems to me that Calli have her own suspisions about what is going on.

Even if it turns out it's not CentComm, someone's definately not playing clean.
LurkerAbove 15th May 2013, 6:48 AM edit delete reply
So, switch rides - sell the ship, drive on this the APC.
Just tell Cent about the little bug, just "old ship was unreliable, risking mission, so we replaced it".
That would also explain nicely the silenced signal :)

I CALLED IT

A centcomm Slow downer.

Sheela 15th May 2013, 5:27 AM edit delete reply

*If* it is CentComm, we still don't have any proof - Though it does seem likely.
Could have been that Ranger dude too.
Dragonrider 15th May 2013, 8:36 AM edit delete reply

I think several of us called it, you chimed in after I laid out two scenarios part of each one turned out to be true. With the tracker dead in the water, the idea of "Blue & Pink Ltd, Mercenaries Extraordinaire Dead Gutters our specialty" in response to the krap Centcomm pulled doesn't seem to far our of the realm of probability. Also a non functioning Plasma Bolt thrower is understood and I wonder what else has been sabotaged in Ceci's programming, like a sudden urge to commit "Mommycide" possibly? Might be good to leave Cecil here to learn horticulture to revive the wastes.

Oh, BTW Centcomm has been in charge so long she has decided humans have no more need to grow and must be preserved as is in their nice little Zoo cages. Nova Roma ain't the only place where the "head" AI needs the services of a Head Shrink AI.
cattservant 15th May 2013, 10:01 AM edit delete reply

I think the underlying problem has to do with varying concepts of time.
Sheela 15th May 2013, 5:27 PM edit delete reply

Well, that and the fact that humans in New Troy have abysmal birthrates, but they don't in New Rome ... coincidence ?
I think not.

There's an overarching plot somewhere in all of this.
cattservant 15th May 2013, 6:32 PM edit delete reply

Several, I think.

Don B. 15th May 2013, 10:49 PM edit delete reply
Non-functiong plasma thrower? The one in Ceci's hand? I was under the impression that she just didn't fire it as the situation was defused by breaker. It seemed that the problem with using the thing was that Ceci would wind up with moderate to severe burns. It's interesting that a group of people can look at the same thing and each see something different. Perception can be such a bitch. What I do like about all of you who take the time to comment on Datachasers; the respect I'm seeing for the opinions of others, even if you're not in agreement. Thanks for restoring a little faith in people on the interwebs, all of you.

velvetsanity 16th May 2013, 4:23 PM edit delete reply

Correct, Don. Cent clarified in the comments that it burned her *because* she didn't fire and that it was a drawback of having it be concealed alongside having so many toys packed in her body
CyberSkull 15th May 2013, 4:35 AM edit delete reply

This is one of several purposes:

Centcom delays Dolly so the real rescue happens. (Xanatos gambit)

Centcom has Dolly and CeCi go down near Nova Roma to draw attention to them so the real rescue can happen. (Xanatos gambit)

Third party sabotage. (Motive unknown)

Centcom uses the device to divert Dolly here so it will be discovered. (Batman gambit)

Sheela 15th May 2013, 5:29 AM edit delete reply

I like the idea of a Xanatos Gambit, it makes sense. Neither dolly, nor the black angel, CeCi, are really that important in her eyes, compaired ot Lynn Taylor herself.

Even if she would like to get them back, ultimately, they're expendable.
cattservant 15th May 2013, 5:38 AM edit delete reply

Actually, I think Cent-comm is very interested in Dolly's new body.
Lynn, on the other hand, is a big liability!
Dragonrider 15th May 2013, 9:03 AM edit delete reply

Sheela"Neither dolly, nor the black angel, CeCi, are really that important in her eyes, compaired ot Lynn Taylor herself." Lynn is only important in that her DNA can be used to take control of Centcomm and her death would bind an unstable Calliope closer it Centcomm. The loss of Dolly as protector is offset by Centcomms ability to control the two who are currently replacing Dolly. The death of Lynn, the loss of Dolly by "Mommycide" from Ceci, who would probably melt down in a plasma core short out afterward and destroy all evidence leaving merely another radioactive spot on the landscape. About as important a a screendoor on a submarine you want to sink in the Miranda Trench.
cattservant 15th May 2013, 5:43 AM edit delete reply

It's entirely possible that Nova Roma's intelligence assets in New Troy are a lot better than New Troy's in Nova Roma.
Sheela 15th May 2013, 6:22 AM edit delete reply

I agree.
It does seem that Nova Roma is somewhat on top of the situation until now, but that could change once Nova Roma collides with TeeDee at full tilt. XD
But then, if CentComm wants to know more about Dolly's new body, she could get that information from Calli Taylor. Dolly herself, is less important.

Another issue btw, is that here, out in the absolute outskirts of civilization, she finds a mechanic that is not only competent enough to remove this device, but can also see that it's made with New Troy coding. But also warns her about it. And on top of that she refers to the craft as a "dead screamer", which is at odds with the whole idea of making her slow to begin with. Thus, making it more likely that the device is a later addition, and the original intent was that it would be fast to begin with.

... maybe. XD
cattservant 15th May 2013, 7:13 AM edit delete reply

I think 'dead screamer' may refer to the device in it's disabled state.

There seems to be a number of unobtrusively talented individuals in the Wastes.
Joleet is in a strategic central location amongst the three main population centers.
LurkerAbove 15th May 2013, 9:56 AM edit delete reply
I understood "screamer" as the bug sending a tracker signal.
velvetsanity 15th May 2013, 10:36 AM edit delete reply

I'm pretty sure "screamer" refers to the tracker, too.
Centcomm 15th May 2013, 2:50 PM edit delete reply

yes the "dead screamer" is the bug .. its dead now..
cattservant 15th May 2013, 6:36 PM edit delete reply

So sad. Someone will miss it!*

*(They could have attached it to a scythe lizard and left it wandering around the Waste.)
Centcomm 16th May 2013, 7:21 AM edit delete reply

Mechanics that cant do there jobs in the wastes often find customer complaints at the end of a gun. so of course shes good. she has to be. also no one knows Mira's whole story. Mira is a good person. and I think your mistaking her accent for slowness.. :D
velvetsanity 17th May 2013, 3:31 AM edit delete reply

Sheela: missed this in your comment earlier...but given that CentComm didn't even know of the very existence of the body Calli made for Dolly, I think it's a bit unlikely that Calli would be willing to part with the specs. That's part of the reason she sent Ceci with her.
xpacetrue 5th Apr 2014, 12:18 AM edit delete reply
I disagree ENTIRELY on Dolly's importance to Cent.

While Cent MIGHT obtain the data on Dolly's next-gen body from Calli Taylor, that assumes: a) That Calli feels comfortable giving the tech to Cent and b) That Calli still holds Cent in high regard. This can change if Calli ever discovers what Cent has been up to. Namely, Cent 1) Gave orders to mission specialists and agents (including Ceci and Dolly) to terminate Lynn if it was impossible to extract her, 2) is perfectly willing to sacrifice human and andy lives for this 3) conscripted at least 1 human and 1 andy against their will (that we know of, 2 if you count Ada), 4) sabotaged Dolly's ship to prevent her from saving Lynn, 5) installed stuff in Ceci to compromise her free will and ability to make choices (including taking lives), and 6) kept Calli entirely in the dark (particularly how Taylors can override Cent's systems). I may be assuming a couple points here, but they're all valid assumptions.

If Calli finds out, she'll hit the roof! It might cause irreperable harm to her trust in Cent. If nothing else, she'd hesitate to share all of the tech in Dolly's new bod. (And for all we know, Calli might have agreements with her "friend" not to share certain tech, like the micro-sized power plant.) And that's not even counting Dolly's importance to the Taylor family and Calli's mental stability in particular. Or Dolly's worth as a very experienced nanny and body guard for the family.
Guest 5th Apr 2014, 12:22 AM edit delete reply
What's also interesting is that one-panel hint where a Taylor receives an alert from Luna-Comm about a message sent from a flagged sender. (It was the page where Prince Douchebag has Cent-Comm accept a collect call about "holding" Lynn for them.) This implies that Calli is vastly more capable than Cent realizes and, AT THE LEAST, that she knows more than Cent would be comfortable with...

That said: If Calli can think of this situation not as a mother, but as someone in a leadership role, she'd realize that everything Cent has done has been logical and for the greater good. Preventing armageddon (at the worst) or a new great war (at the best) is more important than a few lives and inconveniences. I have to think of Cent as a mother-figure for humans and andies who's forced to make tough decisions. Cent must have a very impressive tactical mind.

I seriously doubt all of these events will become public knowledge. But even if it does, as long as Lynn returns safely and things are resolved peacefully, I doubt it would threaten
Cent's position as their AIS. I doubt it would do much harm to her image at all. Even Calli would probably forgive her in entirety. If the fecal matter hits the fan, however... that's different.
velvetsanity 15th May 2013, 12:23 PM edit delete reply

Indeed, NR obviously had better intelligence in NT than vice versa.

Sinister thought that adds complications: it's all been staged by Rose from the very beginning for the sole purpose of getting Aeneas repaired.
velvetsanity 15th May 2013, 10:36 AM edit delete reply

Ok. So it was sabotage. Now, Centcomm doesn't want to lose Dolly's new body, this is true. She's also proven she's a manipulative *ahem*. (censored an impolite term for an EvilGM as viewed from an in-character perspective there :D )

However, we have to look at the whole picture.

There is *obviously* an intel leak somewhere, as how else would drekhead have known when and where to send the gutters to kidnap Lynn in the first place?

Second, Centcomm isn't the only one involved in current operations. We also have to factor Rose in. She's proven at least as manipulative and sneaky, and also that she has agents in place as well as operations in motion.

Third, there's Logrim. How do we know he didn't set up the device while Dolly was sleeping?

And fourth, Calli didn't want Dolly to go. Maybe she planted it in the hopes that Dolly would give up and come home while Centcomm takes care of it? Calli would likely normally know better, but she wasn't thinking too clearly, and Centcomm's done a really good job of hiding her manipulativeness from Calli...

Now, with all those possibilities, if it's either Centcomm or Rose, the most likely motivation is timing, delaying Dolly and Ceci so other groups can either catch up or otherwise be in place when Dolly and Ceci arrive.

It's entirely possible that Rose predicted Acantha and Lynn's visit to Aeneas, and she *has* revealed that she is able at times to at least visit with him online. Which means she likely knows they're with him right now. She also has likely informed him of Kyle's mission and purpose, as well as the transponder ID of his vehicle so he doesn't get plasmafied by the anti-orbital artillery.

Mariko (whom I suspect is Rose's agent in NR) has likely been informed of the impending arrival of the two groups (Dolly and Ceci, and Marcus's group) and is preparing to give them a big friendly undercover greeting and support, as well as warn them of the contingencies and an introduction to Max.

disclaimer: no insider info here, just looking at all the pieces of the puzzle and reminding everyone that there are *other* possibilities.

velvetsanity 15th May 2013, 12:51 PM edit delete reply

Here's another thought: Ceci's angel programming may have forced her to plant the device herself...
Dragonrider 15th May 2013, 1:59 PM edit delete reply

Hmmm Good thought Velvet, one of the reasons I put you in charge of the whipped cream for the wrestling match, but remember Cecil doesn't have a lot of places to hide anything in that outfit besides she has been next to Mommy except when they were in the Luna Base and when she was in the care of breakers sword wielding girlfriend and both places she was chaperoned so doubt she was the one that planted the goodie. But I like the way you think, her programming is to kill Lynn and destroy the body if Lynn becomes a liability, she could have the same programming to kill and destroy Dolly and herself. Hell if she shorted out the plasma thrower she could probably blow the entire Nova Roma palace to hell and back. With the slant Centcomm would put on it, that would drive the mentally unstable Calliope right into the sweet spot Centcomm wants her in and she would be making droids like Dolly for Centcomm's army. Thought here did Calliope find out what her potential is and create Dolly to replace Centcomm?
velvetsanity 15th May 2013, 2:41 PM edit delete reply

If you'll recall, the mission objectives we're aware of for Marcus' team is "recover or kill Lynn Taylor, recover Dolly's body"...so, agreed on the possibility regarding Lynn, but she is to make sure Dolly makes it back to NT or die trying.

As for Calli making Dolly's new body? I think it's more that Dolly's such an important part of the family...and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Dolly can get pregnant with a Taylor child, using genetics that are a mix of both Calli's and Lynn's father's DNA.

By that same token, Centcomm would be *pissed* to learn that, because it means that Dolly has just as much access to Centcomm's systems that Calli and Lynn have. >:)
Centcomm 15th May 2013, 2:44 PM edit delete reply

Dolly cant have children.. >_< but its a cool idea. shes not "that" human. sorry but child production is something that will remain firmly in the hands of the humans ..
velvetsanity 15th May 2013, 3:16 PM edit delete reply

If you want to live in Tempe, there is a great apartment complex off of Baseline and Mill. It's about 705/mo for a 2 bed, 1 bath but utilities are not included. If you want bigger for cheaper, look in Avondale, Tolleson, and west Phoenix. It's cheaper on the west side of the valley but the jobs are mostly on the east side of the valley. Pick and choose.
