Someone brought up Luna Comm. everyone check your wallets. X-P
Haegan2005 11th Sep 2014, 9:25 PM edit delete reply

I wonder if it is time for 3C to have another "Discussion" with the Lunar Corps. I had the feeling that they take real care to not piss off the "old lady" with all the stockpiles of uglies from the war.
They seemed to be treating Cent with kid gloves during the one transmission that we have seen, iirc?
MirrorField 11th Sep 2014, 11:30 PM edit delete reply
Well, I suspect it's more of a matter that Luna is the big player in cis-lunar space. They're just not interested in messy crap like "conquest" and are merely satisfied by doing business with everyone. Including selling nasty toys to anyone with credits.

Also note that our guard is essentially part of the Praetorian Guard, expected to have best toys that New Rome can fab/buy/steal/whatever. "Line Units" will have poorer, domestically built gear.
Centcomm 12th Sep 2014, 12:10 PM edit delete reply

at Mirror this guy is actually a palace guard .. that puts him at " Centurion " level .. Line troops are called Legionary
Centcomm 12th Sep 2014, 12:08 PM edit delete reply

Luna actually has very little to fear from earth.. one they can throw rocks.. two they have the ( redacted - Redacted )read Luna Star

^_^..
Timotheus 13th Sep 2014, 2:10 AM edit delete reply

And hopefully everyone has read "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress".
Stormwind13 13th Sep 2014, 12:22 PM edit delete reply

More than once, Tim. Good book. :-)
Centcomm 14th Sep 2014, 1:17 AM edit delete reply

oh a very good book .. :D
Stormwind13 14th Sep 2014, 6:55 AM edit delete reply

Actually CentComm I'm not sure they don't have a great deal to FEAR from Earth.

As Heinlein pointed out, Luna NEEDS the Earth. There a resources the Earth has that are rare to non-existent on the Moon. As it currently stands, Earth needs Luna too; however, if the Earth ever gets 'healed', Earth will need Luna a lot less than Luna will need the Earth. Earth could simply STOP doing business with Luna... and Luna would probably die out, starved for resources, particularly water. Especially if the asteroid/outer colonies are more loyal to Earth than Luna. The asteroids/outer planet colonies probably could keep Luna running if they threw their support behind Luna. But the economic hit would be bad for Luna.

Economically Luna needs trade to survive. The unrest on Earth is good for Luna, as it keeps them in a dominant trading position. If the unrest is ever resolved and the planet put on a path to recovering its past glories, Luna could lose that position.

May be things Cent doesn't know about, Dolly...
Centcomm 12th Sep 2014, 12:07 PM edit delete reply

Could be :D
plymayer 11th Sep 2014, 11:04 PM edit delete reply

Always good to scope things out. Know exactly what your dealing with. Just in case.
Centcomm 12th Sep 2014, 12:07 PM edit delete reply

yep :D
plymayer 11th Sep 2014, 11:05 PM edit delete reply

Still can't help but wonder if those kind of scans wouldn't be detectable. Of course passive scans can only go so far.
Sheela 12th Sep 2014, 3:55 AM edit delete reply

Might be less of a scan, and more a case of knowledge being applied.

Kinda like how must nature experts can tell different plants from one another with a quick glance, some weapons/armor experts can tell different weapons/armors apart from one another with a quick glance.
Add in telescopic vision and such, and you could quickly learn al ot about something in a very short amount of time without an active scan. :)
Centcomm 12th Sep 2014, 12:06 PM edit delete reply

it ( the visor ) actually isnt emitting anything.. its using recognition patterns based on light refraction and image searching..
cattservant 12th Sep 2014, 12:00 AM edit delete reply

Yes, why was everybody 'ignoring' Nova Roma all those years?
Sheela 12th Sep 2014, 3:50 AM edit delete reply

I doubt they were.

This feels more like the old Cuba/USA deal, where USA do their darnedest to cut off Cuba from the world by enforcing blockades against them. And then, when the communist regime fails, they blame it on communism and the leaders, completely forgetting that their blockades dealt as much damage to the cuban population, as the communist regime did.

In short, Centcomm (and others, probably) have been freezing out Nova Roma for a long while - And now they have to deal with a lot of the resentment that has been brewing because of it.

You don't think Decimus could hold the throne unless there was some majorly angry supporters behind him, do you ?
Decimus would have been kicked to the curb faster than anyone could blink their eyes, if they weren't in an unfair position to begin with.
Of course, the unfair position came about because one of the previous nutcases damaged their local AI ... y'know .. sins of their fathers and all that.

tl;dr - It's a whole lot of bad karma going around, and Dolly is there to kick it's ass.
Stormwind13 12th Sep 2014, 5:28 PM edit delete reply

Well they kindof were ignoring Nova Roma... or else they probably wouldn't have been able to kidnap Lynn in the first place.

I mean, if the AI's had been paying attention then they would have realized that something was in the air. Knowing something was up the AI's could have enacted procedures to counter Nova Roma's schemes.
Centcomm 12th Sep 2014, 12:05 PM edit delete reply

That is actually a plot point so i wont go into it here too much :D
Rashala 12th Sep 2014, 12:46 AM edit delete reply

I think dolly may have just stumbled on a Motto for Centcom

Centcom.: There's a lot of things I ain't telling people.
Centcomm 12th Sep 2014, 12:05 PM edit delete reply

Yup....

"Oh, oh, maybe you've seen a crawling cactus? They actually move around and sneak up on you real slow..."

Q: This is a reference to the Cactuar in the Final Fantasy series of games, correct?

And that leads to the obvious question:
Did this game reference become mixed up with real world lore in the Datachaser's universe? Or, is this the future's equivalent to the Jackalope prank? Or, just maybe, there really is a genetically engineered cactus-like creature? (Sounds far-fetched. But, there are plant-like aliens, so...)

Anyway, I'm glad I can post comments again. The laptop I was using suffered a hard drive failure and I was only recently able to recover my password.

I'm just sorry I missed out on all of your Q&A sessions... :(
Tokyo Rose 12th Sep 2014, 2:02 PM edit delete reply

The last thing I would ever call a Cactuar is "crawling", sprinty little sonsabitches that they are. :D

Actually, I was inspired by the "jumping cholla" cactus. The stems on those detach from the parent plant very easily, and the spines have barbs that snag on practically anything, so you may barely brush past one and suddenly have cactus bits hanging on you; if you didn't realize you touched it, you might think it "jumped" on you. As I thought of it, the idea evolved into a variety that can easily be moved by the wind as well. If you weren't looking and a breeze came up, you might look again, see part of it closer to you, and think "is that thing sneaking up on me?"
highlander55 12th Sep 2014, 4:32 PM edit delete reply

Do they still have Prickly Pear? Make Jam for toast!
Speedy Marsh 6th Feb 2017, 5:25 PM edit delete reply
Those are some clever cacti! Not only do they get a free ride on whatever critter brushes past, but if they have a literal death grip on the creature, then they'll end up with a nice bit of fertilizer, to help get them established in a new location.

I shouldn't have watched YouTube videos of people trying to get free of those chollas, while I'm eating dinner.
DizzasterJuice 12th Sep 2014, 5:44 AM edit delete reply

Ceci's just too cute sometimes. :)
anonymous coward 12th Sep 2014, 10:08 AM edit delete reply
Cute? Perhaps deliberately psychologically-torturing the package to ensure that she's had her fight and flight instincts suppressed though Pavlovian method: Torture her and make her fear both fighting and fleeing too much to do anything. Devious, and a little sadistic.
Centcomm 12th Sep 2014, 12:03 PM edit delete reply

I think Anonymous Pinned it :D
Stormwind13 12th Sep 2014, 5:24 PM edit delete reply

CeCi is ALWAYS cute, Dizzaster. :-D

Now she can also be extremely SCARY when she puts her mind to it. But she is always cute, she can't help it. She was made that way. :-D
Centcomm 14th Sep 2014, 5:50 PM edit delete reply

yes she can.. shes beginning to understand :D
KarToon12 12th Sep 2014, 9:05 AM edit delete reply

"Let's take a look at that armor." I need to see what materials he used so I can make my Judge Dredd costume for the next ComiCon. XD

...okay, I swear, I'll stop with the Judge Dredd jokes. XD
Centcomm 12th Sep 2014, 12:02 PM edit delete reply

Its ok I dont mind .. its actually one of the reasons I liked it :D
Timotheus 13th Sep 2014, 2:22 AM edit delete reply

There's a common saying amongst armorers: SCA, re-en-actors, and costumers, that anyone who draws armor that might inspire someone to actually want to wear someday should be forced to wear it themselves for a hour or two. We would see a lot more thought and practicality go into the designs. At least sketch a torso first and then build the armor over it. (This is not a complaint about your armor here, I'm just venting about a pet peeve in general.)
Centcomm 14th Sep 2014, 5:50 PM edit delete reply

no i totally get it :D
Draginbeard 12th Sep 2014, 2:28 PM edit delete reply

I know a girl who chatters on all day, just like Ceci. Its kind of disturbing to think of her getting the same armaments as Ceci.

Talk about the Eve of Destruction!
Centcomm 12th Sep 2014, 3:20 PM edit delete reply

hehe - gives you a whole new perspective doesnt it :D
howard 12th Sep 2014, 4:26 PM edit delete reply

Stormwind13 12th Sep 2014, 5:13 PM edit delete reply

He'll be back. He won't be able to HELP himself, like the rest of us that have gotten ensnared by CentComm and Rose story-telling.
Haegan2005 12th Sep 2014, 6:43 PM edit delete reply

Ditto....
Centcomm 14th Sep 2014, 1:17 AM edit delete reply

wheee :D glad you liked it :D
Stormwind13 13th Sep 2014, 6:56 AM edit delete reply

CeCi may NOT just be running her mouth here. The apparently random and 'innocent' babble is COMPLETELY disrupting Dari's ability to think. Which precludes her an opportunity to formulate a plan that MIGHT overcome CeCi.

I will not be surprised if that is intentional on CeCi's part. She is WAY smarter than most people give her credit for.
Sheela 13th Sep 2014, 7:31 AM edit delete reply

Alternatively, CeCi is a seed off of Cenycomm's personality, and this might indicate that Centcomm has been yearning to get out of New Troy for a while, and see the world.

... ALL OF IT !!
Speedy Marsh 6th Feb 2017, 5:46 PM edit delete reply
Rashala, singing to Ceci:

I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a maglev carpet ride
Centcomm 14th Sep 2014, 1:18 AM edit delete reply

hehe oh noes Ceci's evil plan is found out :D
Sheela 14th Sep 2014, 3:28 PM edit delete reply

She will see it all !
Rashala 13th Sep 2014, 1:40 PM edit delete reply

You know. All of you may be put off but....I'd Willingly go out there with Ceci to find all those things. Sounds like fun and........Ceci would be the perfect company do be with
Centcomm 14th Sep 2014, 5:49 PM edit delete reply

LOL .. even though she talks a lot :D
