See, they aren't all bad. They do actual legitimate police work! Vice, homicide, theft...and if they're the primary police force, it's unlikely that they need to worry about anyone on the force being dirty.

Dirty cops are no better than the criminals they're supposed to take down.
Mister Black 29th Oct 2014, 6:42 AM edit delete reply

Just to toss my 2 credits in here, I'm going to say that dirty cops are *worse* than the 'normal' criminals.

They're committing criminal acts themselves, which already makes them 'as bad as...'. At least as bad (and in some ways worse), by their actions, they undermine the trust of the people they're supposed to 'serve and protect'. That makes the job orders of magnitude harder for the clean cops.
Dragonrider 29th Oct 2014, 9:41 AM edit delete reply

@Mr Black with relatives in the "Thin Blue Line" nothing pisses them off more than a bad cop, doesn't happen often in most places but it does happen. The only thing worse I can think of is a Minister who abuses the trust of their parishioners and violates one or more moral codes, including but not limited to adultery, child abuse, theft, bearing false witness and greed.
Mister Black 30th Oct 2014, 12:23 AM edit delete reply

Seconded on all counts, Dragonrider. Given my background (I'm an ordained minister, believe it or not, and spent several years as part of the sheriff's auxiliary), I couldn't agree with you more.
Centcomm 29th Oct 2014, 1:00 PM edit delete reply

Nova Roma has a "Military police force" in keeping with the Roman flare they are the "Immunes" Civilian officers outfitted and up kept by the Roma Military - they are not technicly part of the military and handle only civilian Matters - things that go above them is eather handed out to "Centuri" Military personell who act as SWAT and other back up agencys amd then there is the cassians .. who serve a similar function as the FBI or CIA or secret service.. ect .. they handle ANYTHING thing the police cant and that would suit there specialized ability - each Cassian being a individual and each suited to a task. and it varys.. Noctis is a natural leader and organizer and often finds herself doing these tasks under Kali's direct or indirect orders. She takes any task she is given very seriously.
Malati was designed for "wet works" and Terror tactics. and amusingly Anti-Terrorism she is also very good at ferreting out "corruption" in all its forms. her methods are very disarming and often involve random logic that only makes sense to her at the time.
Antonious 29th Oct 2014, 4:57 PM edit delete reply

Disarming Cent? You mean like "Oh you shouldn't have done that. But since you did, I'd say you won't be needing those arms." And I do not mean firearms.
Centcomm 29th Oct 2014, 5:45 PM edit delete reply

Pretty much * looks innocent *
Stormwind13 30th Oct 2014, 2:35 PM edit delete reply

Actually they remind me more of Komitet Gosudarstvennoi Bezopasnosti or Geheime Staatspolizei, velvet. So I wouldn't consider them 'good' by any means, even if they do keep some of the scum pruned back.

In many ways the Cassians are WORSE than the criminals, because they are given authority to terrorize. Instead of the police whose job (done properly) is to protect and SERVE the public (welfare).
velvetsanity 30th Oct 2014, 5:07 PM edit delete reply

Given who's sitting on the throne, Stormwind, I'd say it's not so much 'authority' to terrorize that they're given as it is orders. For no greater reason than 'he breathed too loud when I was in the building'.

Hence why Malati, a few pages ago, was lamenting that drekhead's turned what might have originally been a highly respected police force into nothing more than torturing, murdering thugs.
DLKmusic 30th Oct 2014, 8:04 PM edit delete reply

Actually, If we are going to compare good prince Decimus to either Caesar Nero or Adolf Hitler, most of the "examples" would likely be people in Nova Roma who hold power, wealth, or influence that is not directly gained or held by Imperial Favor.

If you don't have the ability to take that power/wealth/influence away from them directly, next best thing is to destroy them and make an example out of them... Find some reason to justify the action, or find someone other than the state to blame such an action on.
This is what would concern me most if the current problem with snow angel escalated and Dolly and Ceci get involved. It can go south very quickly, and give a moral justification for the people of Nova Roma to hate the Cyber-tech from new Troy as something that is inherently evil.

(to find out more about the methodology used by psychopathic rulers, Read "The Prince" by Nicolo Machiavelli).
Haegan2005 28th Oct 2014, 9:21 PM edit delete reply

Anyone see them having a job for Dolly and Ceci?
I do not think that this will go down as expected. overconfidence is the good guys bane.
Timotheus 28th Oct 2014, 9:52 PM edit delete reply

Depending on the needs of the plot and will of the author(s), this may be foreshadowing of how the Cassiens discover A. How close the outside world has come to achieving human/android physical parity, and B. How far behind New Rome is lagging in cybertronic structure and weapons development.
They were top of the line when they first became operational, but have they been consistently upgraded and have the upgrades been maxed out?
Centcomm 29th Oct 2014, 1:03 PM edit delete reply

at Haegan2005 and Timnotheus indeed overconfidence can be a killer.

"Define Alive".
Someone is seriously hardcore here.
Tokyo Rose 29th Oct 2014, 5:21 AM edit delete reply

Hrist likes her instructions to be 100% specific, and won't hesitate to ask for clarification where she feels it's needed. Hrist has a special hatred for drug dealers*, so she REALLY needs to know exactly how far she's supposed to go on this assignment.

Hrist uses her orders as a restraint and a channel for her own impulses. "I would love to turn this person into a complicated splatter pattern that could only be removed from the walls, floor, and ceiling with a pressure washer and a squeegee. But it's all right not to do that, because I was ordered not to kill them if it wasn't absolutely necessary."

*I can already hear someone asking "why?" Hrist is the Cassians' expert on pharmacology; she has specialized hardware built into her for the detection and analysis of drugs and other chemical substances. She's seen what this shit does to people. She does not like what this shit does to people. She especially does not like the people who peddle this shit to other people knowing what this shit will do to them.
(I am now a candidate to receive the "Understatement of the Year" Award.)

*recommends Rose for the "Understatement of the Year" Award* :)

Yeah, it is nice to have set guidelines to not go overboard...
I already like Hrist quite a bit :D
Centcomm 29th Oct 2014, 1:06 PM edit delete reply

LOL glad you like her :D
DLKmusic 29th Oct 2014, 1:06 PM edit delete reply

By Hrist's comments to Noctis, I got the feeling that she did have a special hatred for drug abusers, no doubt. the clarification of her specialty makes a lot of sense, but I get the same feeling that if this was a whore-monger she was going after, she would ask the same questions, up to and including "What kind of meaningful communication can you have with a Pimp?"

Of course since this IS a police state we are talking about, I don't necessarily disapprove of her attitude or her professionalism. I would however, be seriously unhappy about being falsely accused of something in New Rome with her on the beat.

To put it another way, Noctis would say "we can do this the easy way or the hard way, I don't care which one you choose."
Malati would say "we can do this the easy way or the hard way, PLEEEAAASE choose the hard way, Pretty please???"
Hrist would say "I'VE chosen the hard way"
Centcomm 29th Oct 2014, 3:22 PM edit delete reply

LOL - I cant really argue this point..
xpacetrue 28th Oct 2014, 10:44 PM edit delete reply

Should be interesting to see how this drug dealer relates to the main story.

Also, Cent:
No offense, but I'm glad to see you change your avatar again. I like this one much better. :P

Is Noctis Dispatcher in General or is it whomever is watching the lock-up?
Tokyo Rose 29th Oct 2014, 12:45 PM edit delete reply

Whoever's watching the bounty office is usually the dispatcher.
Centcomm 29th Oct 2014, 1:07 PM edit delete reply

Noctis is high up on the food chain but they all do different things at different times :D
Phil 29th Oct 2014, 9:48 AM edit delete reply
The power of art, and too much realism...

Taking a random moment to say I am amazed, perplexed, and..(wordfailure) from the huge difference in appearance and appeal of the models.

While some people I think have posted that they like how Malati looks.. There's something about her eyes+skin color (at least on my monitor) that just creeps me out because she looks like a walking zombie to me.

Noctis on the other hand..
There's something about the combination of her facial structure + skin tone + hair (OH THE HAIR) and cutey-cute pink pouty lips, that just makes my brain go ..(wordfailure#2).
Even WITH the creepy-lizardyellow-eyes.
Thats.. kinda disturbing to me.
And yet.. I Must Have More Noctis...

She is in some ways probably the most stonecold scary of them...

And yet i want to shower her with HelloKitty pillows and trinkets. n pink stuff. N rainbows

This is very wronnngg...
Phil 29th Oct 2014, 9:53 AM edit delete reply
PS: I blame today's comic with the closeup of her lips, that only now reveals just HOW pink her lipstick is. Never noticed that before today.
It's.. disarmingly charming.
Dragonrider 29th Oct 2014, 3:06 PM edit delete reply

As "cute" as Noctis may appear about the first time you throw a Hello Kitty pillow at her she will demonstrate a new level to the term Pillow Fight, one that ends in violence and bloodshed. Those yellow eyes? Makes me think there is a giant werewolf waiting to break free of human form in order to wreak havoc on humanity in general.
DLKmusic 29th Oct 2014, 5:36 PM edit delete reply

The yellow eyes, along with the porcelain skin, makes me think that this is what would happen if you crossed a Ken doll with Bride of Chucky
Phil 30th Oct 2014, 10:46 AM edit delete reply
AT her??

no no no no no no

Delicately place the pillow next to her, or present it to her. Wrapped nicely in a pink bow, of course.
Tokyo Rose 29th Oct 2014, 1:01 PM edit delete reply

I intentionally designed her to have that porcelain-doll impression. She's so pretty and dainty and cute!

Now imagine her in a half-lit room, standing over a very dead person with blood all over her hands. Maybe an arterial spray line across her cheek. No expression. Glowing amber eyes staring at you in the dimness. Unblinking.

Still cute? >)
Phil 29th Oct 2014, 1:48 PM edit delete reply
Sadly... yes. still cute >.>
You have unlocked a deep and dark magic, Rose. I fear for the world

Phil 29th Oct 2014, 1:55 PM edit delete reply
It's kinda like a somewhat grown up Annie from League of Legends.

Except that Noctis is more restrained. Annie is cute, but more like Matali in attitude. Annie's raison d'etre is to watch things (and enemies) burn.
With her bear.

hey... Noctis needs a stuffed animal!
Malati has her action figures... Noctis can have a plushie :-D

Centcomm 29th Oct 2014, 1:09 PM edit delete reply

Yeah .. I cant take ANY credit for Noctis's appearance its all Rose's .. I did rework her shaders but thats IT ^_^ ( and I pick her outfits )
Kamy 30th Oct 2014, 1:37 AM edit delete reply

@phil, you aren't the only one to find Noctis disturbingly cute...

@Rose shame on you, and well done :-p

Matt Knab 29th Oct 2014, 1:14 PM edit delete reply

Arguing good-naturedly, I hope. Their idea of fun seems very similar!
