Oh SHIT. Mr. Black is incandescent with anger at Optio Clauderius. If he had two brain cells, he would realize how much trouble he is in.

Sounds like he is in charge of this military mistake though. So he thinks he can do what he wants.
Sheela 17th Dec 2014, 2:07 PM edit delete reply

Aw, Mr Redshirt isn't thinking at all.

.. meanwhile TeeDee is thinking ..
Aurora 16th Dec 2014, 9:22 PM edit delete reply
Wait for it... The lovely explosions will be coming soon... For now, I'll look forward to Rose weaving her masterpieces of profanity for this... lowlife.
Hornet 17th Dec 2014, 10:43 AM edit delete reply
No no explosions just the silent tread of death as holes appear in foreheads.
Sheela 17th Dec 2014, 2:08 PM edit delete reply

You can't scream when your windpipe is chrushed.
CptKerion 18th Dec 2014, 4:17 PM edit delete reply
aim, click, death.
That's what... hmm... what is a suitably insulting nickname for this guy... Arseface McShithead. Suitable?
Anyhow, that's what's waiting for him I suspect

"One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back." :-D

Words, will have no effect here, large caliber firearms sound promising before Cassions become involved.
Aurora 16th Dec 2014, 9:24 PM edit delete reply
One thing though, Connie's bleeding before she gets slammed into the ground and we haven't seen this anytime before this scene. Am I missing something or am I actually seeing an artistic 'oops' for the first time here?
Stormwind13 16th Dec 2014, 9:32 PM edit delete reply

Damn, you are right. That SOB probably smacked Connie around some more before hauling her out Aurora. He seems to enjoy his power trip, lording over the much smaller Connie.
Kitty 16th Dec 2014, 9:49 PM edit delete reply
Look again. Her face hits the floor.
Aurora 16th Dec 2014, 9:53 PM edit delete reply
Look at panel 2 and then look at all the times previous to it. You'll see what I mean then.
Jack of Clubs 17th Dec 2014, 11:23 AM edit delete reply
No, go back to scene 1209. Claud knocks her down in panel 2. In panel 5 her face is partially hidden so we wouldn't necessarily see her forehead beginning to bleed. Of course, it is still possible (even likely) that he roughed her up a bit more on the way out...
Tokyo Rose 18th Dec 2014, 6:17 PM edit delete reply

Jack of Clubs has it right; she complained of him hitting her and throwing her around on the previous page. We chose not to show more of his rough handling because it didn't move the story forward very well. We'd clearly demonstrated his disregard for her as a person or even as someone else's "property" already.

I don't like Optio Clauderius, BTW. :D
Stormwind13 18th Dec 2014, 6:36 PM edit delete reply

I'm not sure even his MOM could like him, Rose. :-P He is the very definition of A$$HOLE scum!

Stormwind13 16th Dec 2014, 9:30 PM edit delete reply

Someone get a leash for that dog. Vigiles is TRYING to get someone out here to yank on that leash and put him in his place before he turns this into a COMPLETE disaster.

And Connie is bleeding in the fifth panel. She can't defend herself, even catch herself with those cuffs on. That piece of shit, I hope Marcus drops him. The world would be a better place.
Sheela 17th Dec 2014, 2:32 PM edit delete reply

Ironically, Mr Redshirt is actually the one in the right - They *are* hiding something from him.

Unfortunately, he's too dumb to see they have it right out in the open, rather than hiding it in the corner ... well, apart from Marcus in the rafters. XD
Stormwind13 17th Dec 2014, 4:20 PM edit delete reply

Well true, Sheela; however, Mr. Black is the one he needs to take it up with. But no, Clod there shows his manliness by beating up the little android woman. :-P
Haegan2005 16th Dec 2014, 9:37 PM edit delete reply

Red Shirt. definitely.
Aurora 16th Dec 2014, 9:39 PM edit delete reply
That's sort of ironic seeing as he's wearing red armor...

:D

We are in agreement!
Fairportfan 16th Dec 2014, 10:39 PM edit delete reply

...and, as Veralidaine Sarassri thinks about an upcoming conversation between the King of Tortall and a miscreant noble, i doubt that any of those words are going to include "Goddess bless".

YES! YES! YES! Beautiful way of putting it! I was just thinking about rereading that wonderful series!

I just finished setting up two tablets for my granddaughters - i put Lloyd Alexander's "Prydain" books on them, but i really need to find the eBooks of "Protector of the Smll" (which was the first Tamora Pierce i ever read...)

The Quartet is showing 3rd on the page for me. I thank my sister for introducing me to such a wonderful author.
Timotheus 16th Dec 2014, 10:57 PM edit delete reply

I will repeat (in a slightly different manner) my observation, "Our boy in red armor is not wearing his helmet within close melee' range." His most vulnerable area is not covered by his hard candy shell and is wide open to melting in the hand of whoever can reach him. And as he is not technically "in" New Rome at the moment nor a official customs agent, attacking him in self defense is not a crime.
DLKmusic 17th Dec 2014, 2:28 PM edit delete reply

Technically, you could make a strong case for Piracy based on this incident, in which case, summarily executing all 3 soldiers could be justified. Even so, this is the type of incident that starts wars.

Unfortunately, the goal here is still to get Inside Nova Roma and perform an extraction, not to be a distraction for the real operation, and DEFINATELY not to start a full scale war between Nova Roma and New Troy.
Stormwind13 17th Dec 2014, 4:30 PM edit delete reply

Very true DLK. They have to keep a lid on this, if they are going to fulfill their mission.

On the plus side though, I think Mr. Black is now willing to burn his bridges with Nova Roma. He won't object NEARLY as much if they have to leave sizable chunks of Nova Roma burning, as he did when he was accepting the job.
Tokyo Rose 18th Dec 2014, 3:32 PM edit delete reply

He's a Nova Roma soldier, and they ARE in an area that's controlled by Nova Roma--and right now, they're standing on Roma soil--where the military has all kinds of power. Until a trader's craft goes beyond the customs checkpoint, its interior is considered "sovereign territory", which is why Vigiles Trebatius is freaking out over what's been done to Connie inside the vessel. This is indeed the kind of incident which starts wars.

"Empori Barclay" is, however, registered as an independent trader through Steeltown. Nobody would start a war with Nova Roma over this specific incident; the real threat here is that reputable independents and state-sanctioned traders will shun Nova Roma if it gets out that they're flagrantly violating international trade law and conventions. Sergeant Asshole doesn't care about that, because he's (a) ignorant of those rules and (b) supremely confident that Nova Roma is so powerful and so influential that no one would dare oppose the will of the Imperator over a piddly little android.
Stormwind13 18th Dec 2014, 4:17 PM edit delete reply

I think someone is about to go to war over that piddly little android, Rose. Looking at Mr. Black's face, I think he has LONG passed having enough. Now, it may be ECONOMIC warfare (something Mr. Black would be scarily good at)... but it could bring Nova Roma to its knees.
Tokyo Rose 18th Dec 2014, 6:26 PM edit delete reply

Bah, the weak threats of a mealy-mouthed trash-peddler in foolish defense of a mere machine are as NOTHING in the face of Roma's overwhelming might and glory!!!

. . . is what Optio Clauderius is thinking.
Mister Black 18th Dec 2014, 6:30 PM edit delete reply

Oh...that shipment of ammunition you were looking for? I have *no* idea where that went. I also can't seem to find the important things...like the My Little Pony plushies that Prince Decimus was waiting for.
Stormwind13 18th Dec 2014, 6:37 PM edit delete reply

LOL Mr. Black. Divert that ammo shipment to some of the dissidents. Take their coin and let them deal with the Prince and his a$$holes.
Sheela 19th Dec 2014, 2:20 AM edit delete reply

And don't forget to deliver *all* My Little Pony merchandise to Centcomm's private storehouse, and make sure NOONE knows about it ! XD
Draginbeard 16th Dec 2014, 11:01 PM edit delete reply

And tensions run higher still. Gestapo tactics aside, this encounter is already turning into an incident report five fingers thick!
Sheela 17th Dec 2014, 2:15 PM edit delete reply

Yeah, no wonder Mr Black wants to leave ... erhh .. I mean Empori Barclay, ofcourse. :)
mjkj 17th Dec 2014, 12:38 AM edit delete reply

*hugs and comforts poor Connie*

I wonder how long TeeDee and Dr. Silver still can hold back...

Sheela 17th Dec 2014, 2:16 PM edit delete reply

I suspect TeeDee is on a hairtrigger already, but since she knows Marcus is in the rafters, she'll probably let him throw the first punch, because that's what soldiers do .. stand at the ready until the officer lets you loose.

Dr Silver on the other hand .. hoo boy ..
Stormwind13 17th Dec 2014, 4:27 PM edit delete reply

::HUGS Connie too:: Seeing her in that fifth panel just makes me angry. She is so confused, so helpless in that panel. She doesn't deserve ANY of this.

Clod deserves a slow, painful death for what he is doing to Connie. My suggestion is to get out the fire ants and pour honey on him. Then lock-down his armor (if it is powered) so he can't move. Let him 'enjoy' some humiliation and pain for awhile.
DLKmusic 18th Dec 2014, 6:11 PM edit delete reply

Not nearly painful enough, Stormwind. If I may, I would like to suggest one of Marquis De Sade's favorite tortures....
Flayed alive, then dragged over thissles, then soaked in lemon juice.

This has been field tested in the 17th century, the victim will not go into shock.

Bwuhahahahahahah
Stormwind13 18th Dec 2014, 7:21 PM edit delete reply

That hunk of meat probably doesn't have the BRAINS to go into shock. I just thought dying one bite at a time might be the way to deal with him. Yours would work too though.
Rashala 17th Dec 2014, 12:43 AM edit delete reply

this guy is...Sooooooooooooooooo dead....Professors in the future will point to him as an example of Foreshadowing DEATH for him
Sheela 17th Dec 2014, 2:18 PM edit delete reply

And they will refer to him as the very first human red paté that managed to cover more than 60 square feet of hangar floor.
Timotheus 17th Dec 2014, 1:41 AM edit delete reply

If it wasn't for the fact that he was purposely written this way, I'd have to say we have a nominee for this weeks Darwin Award.
Sheela 17th Dec 2014, 2:18 PM edit delete reply

Aw, he could still win the award and get the grand price .. a coffin. XD
CptKerion 18th Dec 2014, 4:25 PM edit delete reply
nononono, you see the grand prize is a Sardine tin, because that's all it takes to fit what is left.
Sheela 19th Dec 2014, 2:21 AM edit delete reply

As I said, a coffin ... of proper size. :D
velvetsanity 17th Dec 2014, 4:34 AM edit delete reply

Too bad none of them have an in with the Cassians...well, Vigiles might...
Sheela 17th Dec 2014, 2:20 PM edit delete reply

I just realized that this might actually be outside of Cassian's juristriction area.

Well, it's technically also outside of his area, so the Cassians might still wing it and ... "bring him back" to his place, right and proper ... y'know, the chihuahua's doghouse ? It might take a bit of work to fit him in there, but I'm sure Malati would like to put in the effort and go that extra mile .. for the lulz. :D
Stormwind13 17th Dec 2014, 6:59 PM edit delete reply

Actually Sheela. If it is tied to Nova Roma, I think it falls into the Cassians' jurisdiction. They are there to preserve the CITY... and driving all the merchants away is NOT going do that. So, they could take steps, I think. If they knew about it.
DLKmusic 18th Dec 2014, 12:11 AM edit delete reply

The Cassians right now would be a BAD idea. Remember, Malati is no fool... She scanned both Dolly and Ceci when she first saw them as routine. What do you think would happen if Malati Scanned Ada and TeeDee?

And we are led to believe that ALL the cassians are competent (gross understatement), not just Malati.
KarToon12 17th Dec 2014, 4:56 AM edit delete reply

For some reason, people who remain calm, even while extremely angry, are scarier than people who lose their cool and yell, at least to me. (I guess because staying calm is the reaction you don't expect.) Mr. Black is definitely giving me that vibe. >.>
Sheela 17th Dec 2014, 2:22 PM edit delete reply

That's because the people that stay calm has the extra capacity to think up a much nastier plan.
Stormwind13 17th Dec 2014, 4:17 PM edit delete reply

I'm with you there KarToon. I'm actually surprised the guard hasn't had his skin flayed from his body by the tone that Mr. Black is using. Clauderius (who IS a clod) should, by rights, be a mass of bleeding meat and a bunch of strips of skin off to one side from the icy scalpel that is Mr. Black's voice right now. He is so angry right now, his tone is as cold as the depths of space.
Dragonrider 17th Dec 2014, 9:47 AM edit delete reply

The thing that comes to mind here is this is an ideal distraction for Dolly and Company to get Lynn,Acantha, Julia and Miraiko along with Kyle and head to Aeneas's ruined city for a repair pit stop.
Sheela 17th Dec 2014, 2:24 PM edit delete reply

True, it would be a golden opportunity to do some quick precision work while the blunt brigade do their dirty work.

Unfortunately Dolly does not know it's about to happen, and thus don't have time to prep in advance.
Though to be fair, she's pretty flexible, and thinks fast on her feet, so she might still wing it.
Stormwind13 17th Dec 2014, 4:06 PM edit delete reply

Unfortunately, none of the different groups knows the others are there. At this point, I'm thinking even Miraiko doesn't know that Dolly has arrived, yet. If I'm remembering right, CentComm and Rose keep jumping back and forth to catch the different groups into an approximate time-line.

So this action might be happening while Dolly and CeCi are going thru Customs at the Palace. Or maybe even when CeCi is 'entertaining' the first batch of custom agents that they encountered. After all, Team BLACK was ahead of Team Dolly. They passed them at Joleet when Dr. Silver put a moral framework into CeCi (see Reboot - 3 June 2013 and Moving right along - 9 June 2013). Of course, Team BLACK did have a night layover in Atha, but I'm not sure when Dolly got on the road again. Probably the next morning too with all the logistics of sending Mira to New Troy.

So I'm guessing that they can't provide distractions for one another, because they were BOTH being distracted about the same time. Plus, Lynn and Acantha aren't back in the Palace right now anyhow. And neither team realizes that Kyle is there at all.

DLKmusic 17th Dec 2014, 1:59 PM edit delete reply

The Good news is, I've never Killed a man in anger. the bad news is, I'm not angry!

I like Mr. Black, He never swears, never raises his voice, and never loses his cool! Beware this man....
Sheela 17th Dec 2014, 2:25 PM edit delete reply

.. worse news, Mr Black *IS* angry.

It wouldn't have been so bad, if it was TeeDee getting pushed around, but Connie is one of his own crew *and* she was supposed to be safe.
Tokyo Rose 18th Dec 2014, 3:39 PM edit delete reply

@Sheela
Yes, and yes. Connie is *his* responsibility as a member of his crew, and--knowing the trade laws and regulations as he does--she should have been safe while sitting on the bridge. Unless she was actively murdering or raping somebody, she should have been untouchable.
Matt Knab 17th Dec 2014, 3:14 PM edit delete reply

Man, am I the only one geeking out over the idea of them actually BEING clockwork beings. XD
Sheela 17th Dec 2014, 3:45 PM edit delete reply

... yes.

:D
Stormwind13 17th Dec 2014, 7:02 PM edit delete reply

I read some steampunk, Matt... so I like clockwork devices. When they look like Connie though, I can't think of her as being a clockwork lifeform. I mean, she is more human than some of the people I know in the real world!
Boren 17th Dec 2014, 11:50 PM edit delete reply
Yep everyone is angry, but at I said before any violence here and all our heros end up in jail or worse, even the 'nice' guy who tried to tell him to chill would probably turn mean real fast if anyone started shooting or even hitting, nope this is a make a diplomacy roll, situation.

And speaking of making rolls anyone in the area of CT I'm looking for more players for my Pathfinder game...
Sheela 18th Dec 2014, 12:22 PM edit delete reply

If violence doesn't solve everything for you, you aren't using enough of it ?
Stormwind13 18th Dec 2014, 2:39 PM edit delete reply

Maxim #6. "If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it."

Edit: Oh and I'm afraid I can't play, Boren. I'm in Misery, which isn't anywhere near there. Good luck finding some players though.
CptKerion 18th Dec 2014, 4:32 PM edit delete reply
Damn, I'm down in KS. But if you're short players and those you do have are willing to go online you might want to try out roll20.net
It's how myself and some guys from the forum I administrate have been playing for the last couple of months despite being in multiple countries.
velvetsanity 18th Dec 2014, 5:11 PM edit delete reply

WTF is with TWC? I try to vote for the comics and I get a response that I already have voted and cannot vote for another 23 hours. How the hell can this be when I haven't been on the computer for the past 12 hours?
DLKmusic 18th Dec 2014, 6:22 PM edit delete reply

I've been having a similar issue, Antoinous.... Basically, I'm currently limited to voting every other day. :(

There was a Bot campaign last month on TWC that was just obnoxious, and they are still trying to figure out how to prevent that from happening again
Stormwind13 18th Dec 2014, 6:40 PM edit delete reply

Not doing a great job of it, DLK. Look at Twokinds numbers. Someone is jacking them up with some kind of voting hack, I think.
Stormwind13 18th Dec 2014, 6:44 PM edit delete reply

The clock resets at midnight UTC, which means like 6 pm Central right now. So if you vote before that, it counts as one day. After that, counts as the next day. :-P
