Tokyo Rose
In the face of the sudden outpouring of "fuck that dumbass kid" sentiment, I feel the need to point out that Kyle, like Lynn, has lived a very sheltered and protected life, with most of the "adventure" in their lives provided by books, TV, and movies. Combine that with the fact that anybody who's been around teenagers or been one themselves* ought to know how many breathtakingly poor decisions they can make, and maybe he'll be more recognizable as a dumb, idealistic kid instead of, apparently, the next stupidest thing to Decimus himself, for the love of fuck.

* If you have not in fact been a teenager at any point, I must ask one of two questions. (1) "Do your parents know you're reading this comic, which has gore and titties in it?" or (2) "When you were formed from dust by the infinite power of the Almighty, did you have to wipe sand out of your butt crack or was it already clean?"

Well, it sound like he has a plan. Let's see how many holes it has?

Yep top of the roller coaster and going down...
CyberSkull 24th Mar 2015, 9:17 PM edit delete reply

His plan will have fewer holes than he will in 5 minutes.
velvetsanity 24th Mar 2015, 9:53 PM edit delete reply

Hole number one: the contingencies that he probably doesn't even know about.
Haegan2005 24th Mar 2015, 10:06 PM edit delete reply

One should always do ones homework before attempting to kill an insane ruler who likes mass death contingencies... its rule number 3 guys.
Melody_Whyte 24th Mar 2015, 10:41 PM edit delete reply

I think you mean how many holes Kyle has in him.
CptKerion 24th Mar 2015, 11:06 PM edit delete reply
Hole 2, duration of false alert.
These are royal guardsmen, they're competent or they wouldn't be royal guardsmen. They're gonna see the distraction for what it is here very shortly, by the time he gets out of the room two dozen or more well armed men will have surrounded it. He'll be lit up like a candle the moment he leaves
#3 exit strategy
If he gets out before the guards get here, they'll be locking the whole palace down, he won't be able to run anywhere fast enough to get past the whole primitive door lock principle.
Then he gets caught and lit up like a new roman candle
#4 snipers
if he somehow gets out of the palace he won't make it a hundred paces before he has a lot of extra cranial ventilation installed.
#5 if somehow that incident is a sufficient distraction to keep that many guards busy, the palace is locked down by now anyways.
#6 there are more Cassians about to arrive if I do recall
#7 If he somehow gets out of the city with its entire military hunting him, they'll shoot down whatever craft he's in.
He has a several hundred mile radius before he's safe.
EDIT #8 there is no guarantee the Lynn won't break up with him for his being obviously brash, impulsive, stupid, and crazy if by some absolute miracle he escapes alive.
Sheela 25th Mar 2015, 8:56 AM edit delete reply

#9 Decimus is better with a gun than he is, amped reflexes or not. Probably faster too.
#10 Setorius is being creepy ... RUN!
Centcomm 25th Mar 2015, 9:20 PM edit delete reply

keep your hands inside the car at all times :D
ProfEtheric 24th Mar 2015, 9:18 PM edit delete reply

Wow... He has this handled better than I actually gave him credit for. It's still a major Charlie Foxtrot.

This is the sort of thing that can happen when you get this many different groups going after one objective. I have something similar-ish coming down the pipeline (though probably not as tense as this... Well done!)
Centcomm 25th Mar 2015, 9:21 PM edit delete reply

DLKmusic 24th Mar 2015, 9:29 PM edit delete reply

Actually, I'm Curious Cent-Comm? apart from being a complete moron in the past 2 strips, what is it exactly that you have against Kyle?

Dragonrider 24th Mar 2015, 11:41 PM edit delete reply

Comic Relief??
Sheela 25th Mar 2015, 2:08 PM edit delete reply

Unlike us, she knows *just* how stupid he's going to be in the future as well as in the past and the present.

And appearantly, she hates him so much, that even if he appeared, draped in money and kittens, she still wouldn't give him a break.
Centcomm 25th Mar 2015, 9:21 PM edit delete reply

I think its because he was never fully developed as a character when we do the reboots we are going to fix that.
Sheela 26th Mar 2015, 4:55 AM edit delete reply

You will come to like Kyle by making reboot pages ?

That's .. weird.
Marcus Ramesy 26th Mar 2015, 8:26 AM edit delete reply

kyle was never realy liked.. even in the game...
Sheela 26th Mar 2015, 12:43 PM edit delete reply

He was the guy that fell off every cliff, and every roof, he ever encounterted, wasn't he ?
Marcus Ramesy 26th Mar 2015, 7:58 PM edit delete reply

no.. if he is at a workbench he is reasonably competent... he is just ........ young... inexperienced... and ..... not as bright as he thinks he is...
Dragonrider 24th Mar 2015, 10:15 PM edit delete reply

well SFB II seems to have some plans however how he thinks he is going to get out of there with he and Lynn alive will require something like a miracle. Unless he has secretly done enough long distance repairs on Aeneas to have back up no one expects. One other thing we have learned from this, he is safe from Setorius because he definitely lacks in the the traits for brains, planning and survival needed to create even basic cannon fodder from. Also right about now Lynn is glad her contraceptives have worked because she doesn't want to bring another Kyle into the universe.
CptKerion 24th Mar 2015, 11:00 PM edit delete reply
If any of the people in that room are half as intelligent as I suspect they are, he'll be lit up the moment he gets into the hallway.
False flags make it really obvious something is up the moment they're uncovered, and guess what, those guards are gonna converge on high royal highness the moment they realize there is one.

If he somehow gets out of the palace, I put my bets on the snipers, not him.
Sheela 25th Mar 2015, 9:02 AM edit delete reply

Safe from setorius ?
Are you kidding me ?
Setorius just went "HM!" and looked creepy, probably scheming how to keep Kyle alive until the vivisection - Kyle is in *so* much trouble now!
Kitty 25th Mar 2015, 6:00 PM edit delete reply
Actually, Setorius's brief comment struck me more as a sort of verbal shorthand for, "This is interesting, let's see how it plays out." It's not his job to protect the prince, at least not while there are Cassians and Maxus around, so he gets to sit back and do what a scientist does best: Analyze, hypothesize and theorize. He may, if he has time, figure out what advantages Kyle may have, where he came from, how he got there, and what he's likely to be able to get away with.
Sheela 25th Mar 2015, 7:50 PM edit delete reply

Protect the prince ??
Oh goodness no!
He just wants to take Kyle apart and see what makes him tick.
Nothing like a good vivisection in the morning. :)

Too damned much talk, not enough extracting the hostage.... should have already neutralized the cassian. Also, that arm is gonna tire and the tremors gonna start (if the adrenaline tremors haven't already since he's an rank amateur and not conditioned), should be in an isometric stance. His body isn't even balanced properly.

Now - let's also mention the minor detail that he has a uncovered hostile at his six directly... well, actually everybody in the room must be considered a hostile since he has no clue about the other plots in play.... *sigh*
Sheela 25th Mar 2015, 9:04 AM edit delete reply

His arm is cybernetic though, so it won't fatigue.

Words of advice for the security forces and leaders of Nova Roma
#1 for all defensive measures, have multiple nonidentical redundant systems in place.
#2 always have spare security on hand
#3 maintain physically and digitally isolated subsystems for security. Can't hack what you can't get to.
#4 fully search anyone who come into the room, not just with scans but with more traditional methods as well.
#5 If you are a dictator, always carry a gun. You eat with it, you sleep with it, you shit with it, you shower with it.
Possible #6 Always have at least one, if not more security personnel who don't look like it ready to spring into action
#7 always wear body armor
#8 have a hardened hard line silent alarm at your seat for all important meals. Make sure it is backed up by non-identical redundant wireless systems, using a broad range of frequencies.
#9 have a false flag response system in place.
Sheela 25th Mar 2015, 9:07 AM edit delete reply

To be fair, Drekhead *is* probably carrying a firearm, and has some lightweight armor on.

He's not entirely stupid.
Drekhead, I mean. Not Kyle, he seems pretty stupid at this point.
CptKerion 25th Mar 2015, 7:26 PM edit delete reply
Drekhead = Decimus

We now need an insulting nickname for Kyle.

Centcomm 25th Mar 2015, 9:23 PM edit delete reply

ok thats bad!
CptKerion 24th Mar 2015, 11:46 PM edit delete reply
Guys, I just realized something that could make things a lot worse for Lynn.
That gun which can't be picked up by scanners. Doesn't mean thorough searches by personnel won't find it.
Since Kyle knows her and she knows him, she'll be assumed to have some means of connection and her person and almost everywhere she has been will be searched.

If they do find it, then this shit will seem shallow compared to the shit she'll be in.
mjkj 24th Mar 2015, 11:46 PM edit delete reply

Lukkai 25th Mar 2015, 5:26 PM edit delete reply

Yep he has a plan .. half baked.. but a plan :D
Cperka 25th Mar 2015, 3:13 AM edit delete reply

I am torn between disappointment and utter amazement for his lack of good reason. As someone pointed earlier, it seems that right now we experience emergence of Shit-For-Brains the Second.

I mean, does he enjoy Tokyo Rose verbally spanking him like a bad boy he thinks he is, or he expects Lynn to turn jelly with his badassery? :D

I still think Kyle is a distraction as part of a greater plan. Kali has, after all, had more than the split second she would require to take him down.
Lukkai 25th Mar 2015, 5:19 PM edit delete reply
Yet Kali's prime mission right now is being a bullet sponge for Decimus.

And why should she risk anything? He's taking his sweet time and she's got reinforcements nearby.

Methinks she's part of the plan.

that may actually be part of it :D
Pirtnac 25th Mar 2015, 8:49 AM edit delete reply
@Rose: I think we're all aware that he's a dumb, idealistic kid. His actions as such are currently driving us to a foaming frenzy. He also *is* one of the good guys, so when his own actions are about to cause horrible things to happen to him, we get more upset.
anonymous coward 25th Mar 2015, 12:05 PM edit delete reply
I would hesitate to agree to this extent: Everyone should have an unrestricted right to suicide within certain limits. Provided a person is capable of, and has made, rational assessment of their remaining lifespan and prospects--or reasonable valuation of their sacrifice on behalf of others--they should be free to give up their right to life for the benefit of others. It is awful and possibly unforgivable that Kyle's deathwish is leading him to cause an international incident that plausibly sparks off the imminent war preparations, though.
Pirtnac 25th Mar 2015, 11:33 PM edit delete reply
I take it back, his plan is brilliant.

Being a computer genius, he's clearly set up the security footage to record the scene. Only it will be forwarded to New Rome's authorities, rather than the Kyle Memorial Fund. Since "Death by antagonizing Cassian" can be considered suicide, "Death by antagonizing Cassian, while the Prince orders it (repeatedly and with much glee)" could be *assisted* suicide.

*Now* they'll finally have something solid to bring him to trial. Crisis averted.
Kitty 26th Mar 2015, 1:36 PM edit delete reply
Pirtnac, don't forget that in New Rome, Decimus is the only authority with any real teeth (not counting possible coup d'etat stuff going on without his knowledge). If Kyle were killed, no one would be putting Dec on trial. He'd just say an assassination attempt was narrowly averted.
Kitty 26th Mar 2015, 1:33 PM edit delete reply
It's not considered suicide if you're doing it to save others. That's when they call it "a heroic sacrifice."

I don't think that's his plan, even if he thinks he would willingly die for her. If he's killed here and now, that leaves her still sitting there in the Black Palace. Of course there are still things going on behind these scenes, so to speak....Dolly and Ceci, Mr. Black & company, etc.
Centcomm 25th Mar 2015, 9:26 PM edit delete reply

Setorus: Excuse me your excellency, but I have a solution in mind that should make everyone happy.

Decimus: Can't you see we're busy right now, Setorus.

Setorus: That's just it your excellency, please don't kill this young man. You see, since he's an interloper, and not a political hostage, Hand him over to me. I'm sure Ms. Taylor will be most cooperative in hopes that no harm comes to him, and if not, I do have a genetic experiment involving a 3rd arm that he would make an ideal test subject for.

Decimus: .... Third Arm?

Setorus: Young Man, now really would be a good time to put the gun down. You would delay my experiments ever so long if I had to patch you back together after Kali finishes with you...

(and even after that, I STILL like Setorus!)

What strikes me most about this panel is the lack of movement. By that I mean Kali HAS put herself "mostly" in line of fire but our ever intrepid teen is still standing and still with gun and not dead or disarmed. Kali would have noticed him going for it and taken immediate action on the threat, not call the guards. Second the priest just sat there and said, "Hmm." which while typical of a doctor not typical of a man in his stature. Then there is whats-her-name (Sorry I forget just now) who is in coms with Rose and she is lying to her about what is happening.

Granted Kyle is still being a ID10T in the most lethal way, But, The kid has got sand.
Lukkai 25th Mar 2015, 5:23 PM edit delete reply
Err... How is she lying to Rose about what's happening?

She was asked how far she was from Kyle. The number sounds about right.

There is only one thing truly feared by professional security personal, assassins, and other assault agents.
Well meaning amateurs without a clue that what they're doing won't work. Because they go ahead and do it anyway which screws up all the other plans and sometimes just happens to work because.
Tango Xray Actual 26th Mar 2015, 2:58 AM edit delete reply
That is mostly true but only in one-on-one close quarters situations, whether armed or not.

This is a secure facility penetration through what is assumed to be a multi-layered defensive perimeter with ever increasing levels of security. Given the situation and the main protectees, it would be not only aimed at keeping intruders out, but neutralizing attacks from within by 'trusted personnel.'

Even today, penetrating such an establishment is virtually impossible for an outsider: think the White House, Langly or Ft. Meade. they may get through the first ring, but from that point forward, the defenses are collapsing in on them even as any 'targets' are being moved to secure areas (saferooms, bunkers etc.) The amateur / one-time lunatic is a large part of planning these type of facilities / residences since in some ways, a 'professional' is indeed more predictable, especially if s/he wants to get out alive post-op.

Seriously, Kali's job as de fact head of internal security, no matter what the outcome is, would be toast in this situation because the brat managed to make it this far. Also (though it wouldn't have worked for the story) an assassin-cum-bodyguard, let alone one at Kali's level, would never have left her primary unprotected for any reason even for a moment. (No matter what is discussed in the Oval Office, there is always at least one armed SS agent attending. With a ultra-paranoid like His Imperialness who does have enemies, the servers would be most likely part of the protection detail as well as a number of guards along the walls.) So this should imply there are other professionals lurking in or behind the woodwork.

However, proper security won't move the plot-line forward so.....

Lukkai 26th Mar 2015, 4:45 PM edit delete reply
There's also the slight fact that Decimus has contingencies installed. That would kill any possible assassin and everything he stands for.
Which is something the people present know. And Kyle is probably supposed to know as well according to his faked background.
A background, mind you, that's already gotten him within the innerst security ring.
Shoddi 26th Mar 2015, 8:28 AM edit delete reply
Once the prince finds out where Kyle is from, wouldn't that put New Troy in his cross-hairs as well? Assuming, of course, that New Troy wasn't already there.
Stormwind13 26th Mar 2015, 10:27 AM edit delete reply

I think Douchebag wants the entire planet under his control, Shoddi. To do that though, he needs control of some of CentComm's supply of nightmares... I mean weapons of mass destruction. So, I doubt finding out Kyle's background will do much to change Douchebag's priorities.
Stormwind13 26th Mar 2015, 10:33 AM edit delete reply

And we have a little symmetry here. Miraiko also uses 'Kuso' when presented with an unpleasant surprise scenario. Kiku used the exact same line in Wake Up Call (25 September 2014). So, I guess they are related.
Lukkai 26th Mar 2015, 4:51 PM edit delete reply

Honestly, at that age I'd seen enough movies to know that when the villain is explaining all his tricks to James Bond, the villain is helpfully informing James Bond what aspects of Bond's plan the villain DOESN'T know about.

Kyle is playing the villain in this page. Because he's got this far and is drunk on his own success.
