Her attitude quite understandable.
Thor 9th Apr 2015, 10:22 PM edit delete reply
Well, someone has to care about Kyle becoming wormfood. It might as well be her. She doesn't have anything more pressing on her agenda at the moment.
anonymous coward 10th Apr 2015, 12:47 AM edit delete reply
Well, she should have, "Trying to survive," "Understand Rome politics," "Learn about the security and infrastructure systems around her," and, "Watch for opportunities to improve her odds of escape," as her agenda. However, she's never had much training in how to be a properly hostile prisoner so I guess we can't expect too much.
Sheela 10th Apr 2015, 3:54 AM edit delete reply

If centcomm had any say in this, "Pass the Salt" would be right up there, among things that were more important than Kyle right now.

.. wait .. Centcomm *does* have something to say in this! DOH!
Melody_Whyte 10th Apr 2015, 1:59 PM edit delete reply

Hah, yeah... 'Cause he was seen so infrequently and got so little character devolopment that... Well... Let's be honest.

No one but Lynn gives a shit about him. :P
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:25 AM edit delete reply

Well in the reboots we plan on hopefully fixing how 2D Kyle was.. :D
Sheela 11th Apr 2015, 8:55 AM edit delete reply

I kinda like it .. not all people are "deep" and "meaningful", even in real life.
CptKerion 11th Apr 2015, 1:53 PM edit delete reply
Yeah... I know people who are just about as deep as he was. I actually know one who is almost like him to the letter. I don't really like either of them.
Lurker 11th Apr 2015, 10:44 PM edit delete reply
Reboot? NOOOOOO!!!

Please, PLEASE, no. Have you looked at "reboots" of other comics at all? I call it "death of a comic".

Learn from your mistakes. If you really, REALLY must, go back and fix an egregious error or two, but please, Please, PLEASE.

NO REBOOTS! (Sounds like NO CAPES!)
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 11:56 PM edit delete reply

Well in this case I despise the art .. and there were some major inconsistency in the store that have been confusing readers and we later fixed. But mostly .. I despise the art :D
HiFranc 12th Apr 2015, 2:03 AM edit delete reply

I can't comment for before it changed but the reboot of A Girl and Her Fed seemed to be successful to me. OTOH, I only found it after the reboot.

However, the artist kept the old pages so that readers could compare them. She even made the effort to put a link on each page so that readers could switch between the old and new versions.
Sheela 12th Apr 2015, 8:15 AM edit delete reply

Generally, I think Lurker is right.
A reboot often spells death to a webcomic.

But sometimes it works out. :)
Tokyo Rose 12th Apr 2015, 5:30 PM edit delete reply

We've been sliding reboot pages into the archives for a little while now. Cent's art has vastly improved, as has my writing and layout, and we both wanted to switch the single-panel-per-page presentation to something more in keeping with how we do it now. The story itself has evolved, and we wanted to correct the early inconsistencies that sprang up along the way.

That said, redoing the "Mockingbird" arc is a frightening proposition, because the original has been so incredibly popular just as it is . . .
Sheela 12th Apr 2015, 7:21 PM edit delete reply

Not to mention that with improved art, the mockingbird episode would become even more gruesome!
antrik 12th Oct 2016, 3:38 PM edit delete reply
Oh come on: we all know the only *real* purpose of the remasters was to get an opportunity to ret-con the story of Lynn's ova :-)

(But it's in vain -- the truth is out there!)
Haegan2005 9th Apr 2015, 10:07 PM edit delete reply

I think the touching part of this, is that Maximus understands.
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:24 AM edit delete reply

He really really does..
Dragonrider 9th Apr 2015, 10:35 PM edit delete reply

Wonder if Max has been warned about SFB's plans for him? No need to mourn Kyle either he is dead or his clone os dead and he is on his way to fix Aeneas.
Francisco 9th Apr 2015, 11:06 PM edit delete reply
I think that it would be overly complicated if there were clones.
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:24 AM edit delete reply

Francisco 11th Apr 2015, 2:53 AM edit delete reply
Is it bad that I automatically added a "sweetie" on the end of that? I've watched too much Doctor Who. :D
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 3:31 AM edit delete reply

Nope .. thats where it came from :D Doctor Who ROCKS !
mjkj 9th Apr 2015, 11:19 PM edit delete reply

Poor Lynn...

Wow, Maxus really is a big softy... :D

Take good care of her...

Rashala 9th Apr 2015, 11:42 PM edit delete reply

Here where we all learn a hard life There are no "Happy" endings......No clean the good guys win bad guys lose stuff.....Just Victims and people who manage to live through it....
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:23 AM edit delete reply

Correct.. There is no "good" and "bad" simply shades of infinite Greys Although Dolly And Maxus come close to Pure "white hats"
And the Prince is most assuredly wearing a black hat.
Rashala 11th Apr 2015, 6:00 PM edit delete reply

YEah its a lesson you learn watching the REal world and everything

there are no Winners in a war. Just Those who died and those who survive it
Lukkai 11th Apr 2015, 7:38 PM edit delete reply
What was that saying again, I once heard?

"War doesn't determine who's right. Just who's left."

Came to my mind when I read your comment.

ProfEtheric 9th Apr 2015, 11:45 PM edit delete reply

I've got something to say.

This part of the story has made me feel almost physically ill, and yet I can't turn away. That tells me you're doing something right.

Still, there is a frakk-ton of tension right now. I wonder how much more we can handle...

(Probably a lot, but still...)
Tokyo Rose 10th Apr 2015, 12:07 AM edit delete reply

Thank you! May I offer you a complimentary sick-bag? :)
Sheela 10th Apr 2015, 3:56 AM edit delete reply

It's a very nice sick-bag too, with smiley faces on it!
It has been used by many others and only stinks slightly of vomit.

Please clean after use. :)
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:22 AM edit delete reply

well - things get darkest before the Dawn.. but the night is So so long.
Sheela 11th Apr 2015, 8:56 AM edit delete reply

Bring flashlights ?
XRzer04 9th Apr 2015, 11:47 PM edit delete reply

Hmmm...Clones,That's an idea. I dunno. I think the kid if kind of main character-is to just be getting offed, and in such a stupid way. A clone IS kind of a messy way to go about it from a story perspective though. I'm gonna say I still think he might still turn up more often than any dead kid has any right to. Maybe kind of a ghost-in-the-machine thingy... Consciousness-transfer nanobots, anyone?
anonymous coward 10th Apr 2015, 12:55 AM edit delete reply
If it were that easy to perform medical necromancy then combat soldiers would be substantially less hesitant to engage suicidal missions/objectives, and assassination would be absurdly hard to carry out on anyone that was prepared for the attempt. No, "get out of graveyard free," card on the table here I think.
Sheela 10th Apr 2015, 3:58 AM edit delete reply

Reloading androids into new bodies is indeed a kind of necromancy for android soldiers.
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:21 AM edit delete reply

Transfering a Human mind to a machine is .. out there sciences.. more than that I cant say.
Sheela 11th Apr 2015, 8:58 AM edit delete reply

I do believe that was mentioned when Doctor Silver first appeared, after she had done a job for some sleazy company that was using some new flash sticks to train assasins.

That won't come back to bite them .. noooo. XD
DLKmusic 10th Apr 2015, 12:22 AM edit delete reply

Wow, Talk about your Gentle Giant. Well done!
Cperka 10th Apr 2015, 12:55 AM edit delete reply

Was it wrong for me to snicker at alttext?

Hundred thanks for Maxus for slowing the rollercoaster with his own body...
Stormwind13 10th Apr 2015, 9:05 PM edit delete reply

Not at all Cperka. I think that is the reaction they wanted. Something to break the tension of the last few pages.
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:21 AM edit delete reply

:D yeah :D Rose did that as well :D
CptKerion 10th Apr 2015, 1:40 AM edit delete reply
Ah, Maxus to the rescue again.
Man, if there was no Maxus imagine how bad things would be right now.
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:20 AM edit delete reply

trust me .. it would be horrible
Timotheus 10th Apr 2015, 2:27 AM edit delete reply

That actually is a fairly reasonable sound effect for a steak knife being drawn across a coarse 4x4 chain mail surface. Don't ask me how I know.(cough, sca, cough, cough.)
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:20 AM edit delete reply

Yep ! Rose excels at the SFX :D
Tokyo Rose 12th Apr 2015, 5:33 PM edit delete reply

If the NSA is monitoring me through hidden cameras, some of my SFX-oriented antics have probably made their internal "video pick of the week" list. I worked out that particular sound effect by taking a chainmail headband that I own and running one of the kitchen knives over the surface. Some of the methods I've used to figure out other effects have involved peculiar behavior indeed. :D
MST3KFan 10th Apr 2015, 2:43 AM edit delete reply

This is drama at it's most dramatic for sure. You can feel the tension and the feelings all in this one page.
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:20 AM edit delete reply

Thank you ! - This is a really intense scene .. its always hard to do drama well :D im glad its coming across :D
KarToon12 10th Apr 2015, 6:37 AM edit delete reply

Papa Maximus to the rescue. <3
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:19 AM edit delete reply

Always... :D
JustNoPoint 10th Apr 2015, 8:16 AM edit delete reply

Live now and come back later with BIGGER knives! And maybe an army or two!
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:19 AM edit delete reply

VanEzzania 10th Apr 2015, 9:47 AM edit delete reply

Why must you hurt me in this way? :(
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:19 AM edit delete reply

Sorry ! :(
lalverson 10th Apr 2015, 1:41 PM edit delete reply
Maximus is a loyal and honorable man. He would have been a most excellent father.
Hydrargyrum 10th Apr 2015, 5:04 PM edit delete reply

Also a smart man with the foresight to wear chainmail to dinner (or whatever the suitably modernized version is).

@Cent/Rose: the scrtch there in panel two is a nice touch.
Stormwind13 10th Apr 2015, 9:03 PM edit delete reply

Agreed Ialverson. Maxus would make a good father. He is caring and VERY protective. Now if he wasn't chained to the insane Douchebag, it would be 'perfect'. :-)

I'm thinking that was Rose, Hydragyrum. She does a lot of the sound effects.

And I'm guessing that armor might stop more than you would expect. I have a feeling Max realizes that 'accidents' might befall him.
Tango Xray Actual 10th Apr 2015, 9:47 PM edit delete reply
One *would hope* that metallurgy had resulted in improved materials over the centuries... Welded small stainless 4-in-1 is pretty hard to get through even today.

Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:17 AM edit delete reply

Maxus is a awesome Man who cares far more than most .. :D
CptKerion 11th Apr 2015, 1:57 PM edit delete reply
Tungsten alloy chainmail over a carbon fiber weave with hefty padding is my bet. Probably has some ablative and possibly reflective elements to protect from thermal weapons.
You'd need specialized armor penetrating weapons to get through that.
His head, neck, and hands are exposed still, but I suspect he is capable of keeping those in one piece.
Lukkai 10th Apr 2015, 7:30 PM edit delete reply
Well, that involved even less force than I thought. And shows the usefulness of a chain shirt.
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:17 AM edit delete reply

Maxus only used the needed amount of force no more ..
Skweeee 10th Apr 2015, 9:53 PM edit delete reply

00ooOO! I like the impact of the blurring effect in the top panel.

She should learn that vengeance is a dish best served cold.
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:18 AM edit delete reply

Yes but she currently running the Hot blaze of rage :D ( thank you ! :D )
Francisco 11th Apr 2015, 12:52 AM edit delete reply
I just had a thought: Aeneas is monitoring all this. I wonder what he makes of the new developments.
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 2:18 AM edit delete reply

He probably isnt very happy ..
Francisco 11th Apr 2015, 2:56 AM edit delete reply
Unfortunately, even with the ring, he can't do much.
Sheela 11th Apr 2015, 9:00 AM edit delete reply

What he makes of the new developments ?

He makes applepie !
'Cause, y'know .. applepie. :)
Stormwind13 12th Apr 2015, 6:36 PM edit delete reply

Write it down in the ledger, and when Aeneas is able to... he will COLLECT on the debt in that ledger!
Francisco 11th Apr 2015, 2:25 AM edit delete reply
Are they going to get back to Dolly and Ceci? If so, what would they make of the situation? Thinking about them, would they be able to rescue Katya? What about the woman who is serving them? Also, is she a spy?

How about the second team? How would this affect them?

And, going off topic, this webcomic had a big influence on my last dream this morning.
Centcomm 11th Apr 2015, 3:31 AM edit delete reply

Dolly and Ceci will enter the ring shortly :D Trust me :D
HiFranc 11th Apr 2015, 4:19 AM edit delete reply

I can't wait to see how they'll respond.
Draginbeard 12th Apr 2015, 12:32 PM edit delete reply

Im waiting for this as well. Mostly Im waiting to hear Dolly grab Lynn, and give Ceci the Okay to go ballistic on the palace.
HiFranc 12th Apr 2015, 2:08 PM edit delete reply

That would not be a good resolution to the situation as it would give New Rome a reason to go to war with New Troy.

The best course that I can think of is:

Decimus loses his temper. One of the rescuers kills him. Acantha orders Kali not to retaliate. A diplomatic solution is found to Lynn's status and a legal solution is found to Acantha's age. New Troy and New Rome are at peace and Lynn's no longer a hostage.
HiFranc 12th Apr 2015, 2:12 PM edit delete reply

Sorry, that should be:

One of the rescuers kills him as he's about to attack/kill Lynn or Acantha.
Tokyo Rose 12th Apr 2015, 5:36 PM edit delete reply

The problem is, right after "one of the rescuers kills him", there'd be "the contingencies go off and things get a whole lot worse".
Stormwind13 12th Apr 2015, 6:35 PM edit delete reply

Actually, Draginbeard I'm wanting them to grab Lynn and get out of town without triggering anyone. If CeCi has to go ballistic, I fear she won't be going home.

CeCi is a weapon system, and if she has to go all out, she will probably burn herself out. There won't be anything to bring home in that case. :-( And I want CeCi to make it home!
HiFranc 11th Apr 2015, 12:22 PM edit delete reply

Kyle did achieve one thing: At least the plan to murder Max is off the table.
CptKerion 11th Apr 2015, 1:57 PM edit delete reply
