Aha!

And up the next curve!

Acantha is not in survival mode any longer!

Oh yea, and creepy guy has a point. Best case is isolation. worst...
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 12:16 AM edit delete reply

No she isnt .. it could be bad.. could be good :D
Haegan2005 14th Apr 2015, 5:24 PM edit delete reply

A fight is almost always a mixed bag, and this will require allies. Allies that can be targeted far more effectively then what Acantha can be.

Dec will fight, if he sees it coming, or even suspects it is coming. Nothing like going preemptive on a danger real or imagined.
ProfEtheric 12th Apr 2015, 9:45 PM edit delete reply

Ah... NOW we see the dominoes being pushed over.

Go, Acantha, go!

My biggest fear is that Doucheimus will do what any cornered animal does: lash out. And with the power he claims (and those thrice damned contingency thingies), it will likely be bloody.

Still, whatever support he may have had is slipping away, and it is delicious.

(And I LOVE Setorius! He's soooooo creepy-awesome!)
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 12:16 AM edit delete reply

Deck may never see it coming from her :D
Lukkai 13th Apr 2015, 7:06 AM edit delete reply
It does depend on how she/they will go about it. He might not notice until it's far too late.
Grismagistus 13th Apr 2015, 11:37 AM edit delete reply
Actually, Acantha appears to be the cornered animal here. She sees no other options available but to fight. She's already shown she's smarter and saner than he is, so, dead man walking...
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 2:18 PM edit delete reply

Acantha has yet begun to plan .. :D
Sheela 14th Apr 2015, 12:57 PM edit delete reply

That's allright, Setorius seems to be halfway through his plan already.
velvetsanity 12th Apr 2015, 9:47 PM edit delete reply

Umm, Acantha, your inner steel is showing ^_~
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 12:16 AM edit delete reply

and shes sliding it out of its Sheath.. :D
anonymous coward 13th Apr 2015, 3:47 AM edit delete reply
"...and shes sliding it out of its Sheath..."
Hold on, I'm not used to doing this so it may be a little awkward, but it seems to be called-for.
*ahem* That's what she said.
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 2:18 PM edit delete reply

LOL! MAN I should have saw that coming ..
velvetsanity 14th Apr 2015, 8:43 AM edit delete reply

I was actually referring to backbone/spine :P
CptKerion 12th Apr 2015, 9:59 PM edit delete reply
I believe that a well placed 5.56 round will do the job with Decks. Should strip him of the ability to be a problem pretty quick. Cranial ventilation and all.
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 12:17 AM edit delete reply

Romas death would be soon afterward sadly ..
Dragonrider 12th Apr 2015, 10:16 PM edit delete reply

Believe the best solution is for Acantha to call on Aeneas for help, beat feet to Aeneas "safe Zone" activate a division or two of the robo soldiers and return with enough fire power to back her play. She then brings SFB to trial on Charges of Treason, providing she lives long enough. Right now she and Max are on the short list for SFB's Death Squad and Lynn is heading for her wedding day to SFB.
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 12:17 AM edit delete reply

LOL good call on that ..
Haegan2005 12th Apr 2015, 10:28 PM edit delete reply

People are still ignoring the contingencies. Those have to be removed/nullified if anyone inside the city wants to survive Decs death. I would imagine he has Nuclear weapons hidden somewhere, or overtly guarded in plain sight so you can't take them out without him knowing.

Course, I have to ask myself if the Contingencies are based off of a continuous signal. This has all sorts of possibilities!.
Timotheus 12th Apr 2015, 11:06 PM edit delete reply

What we're just going to have to accept is that the "contingencies" are a "Mcguffin", an essential plot element that the authors need to keep their story line on track. As such they are NOT going to explain what they are or how they work in any detail because they know this bunch of yahoos (us readers) would figure out a way to neutralize whatever they came up with instantly. So the safe bet is for them to just keep saying that Decimus has them and no one can get around them (until the proper moment in the story comes along).
Thus we must assume they are ACME Never Fail Contingencies and just live with it.
Haegan2005 14th Apr 2015, 5:26 PM edit delete reply

I don't know about Acme. The coyote seemed to have really bad luck with those gadgets. Just saying.

Dec probably went with road runner designs...
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 12:18 AM edit delete reply

They may be a maguffin .. but they are part of the story .. and if they didn't exist Deck would probably already be dead .
Tokyo Rose 13th Apr 2015, 1:55 AM edit delete reply

Without going into huge amounts of detail, a combination of factors keep the contingencies in play. For example, there's a continuous signal tied to his vital signs, but there's also a regular interaction he has to make to prevent them from triggering. The contingencies themselves are composed of multiple stages which include (but are not limited to) the destruction of Nova Roma's infrastructure, the unleashing of the combat drones and certain weapons to kill everything alive within the city, and the launching of the city's arsenal against various important targets.

In short, double plus ungood.
ProfEtheric 13th Apr 2015, 5:25 AM edit delete reply

Okay, I'm doing the meaningless reply thing. Use of Doublespeak is double plus good! :)

Basically, they need to find a way around the contingencies... grrrrrr....
Lukkai 13th Apr 2015, 7:08 AM edit delete reply
Which brings up the question: Would a fixed Aeneas be that way?
Stormwind13 13th Apr 2015, 1:55 PM edit delete reply

I don't know Lukkai; however, I have a feeling it might be a good start. Was Aeneas supposed to have guardianship of the leadership of Nova Roma? Could he have been meant to pass judgement on the 'fitness' of the ruler to ensure that Nova Roma prospered?

With a damaged Aeneas we may never know, unless someone can fix Aeneas. Return 'him' to his full power. Right now it is looking scarily likely that we could wind up with a smoking hole where Nova Roma used to be, with any of the characters that didn't get out of the zone being gone. Which could be up to ALL of them. :-P

I sure hope it doesn't come to that, but it certainly could.
CptKerion 13th Apr 2015, 11:03 PM edit delete reply
Let's be honest, a fixed Aeneas would just be able to go "of, WMD, hmm, let's turn that off. Oh, here is another. Oh, combat drones? Mine now. Let's use them to help this process... who puts a nanite bomb on a bridge?"
MirrorField 12th Apr 2015, 10:53 PM edit delete reply
Love Setorious and his attitude :)
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 12:18 AM edit delete reply

He is pretty cool :D
Lukkai 13th Apr 2015, 7:09 AM edit delete reply
And really using his smarts, of which he got plenty.

He definitely didn't reach his position by chance of favouritism.
Sheela 13th Apr 2015, 4:54 PM edit delete reply

Also, he WILL have his salt, darnit!
Rashala 13th Apr 2015, 12:12 AM edit delete reply

Yep DEci has gone OVER the line where this may have all worked out somehow....Now his sisters ready toi kill him.... And He jus tDRagged ANOTHER country into this ...yeah He's now got TWO Giant Cannons aimed at his country....

Soo Let see I am thinking We send his head to Calli with dolly and lynn delivering it and His ASS to Sparta to kyles family to prove he's Dead.
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 12:19 AM edit delete reply

Actually Acantha wants to "break" him.. thats far far different than killing him.
Timotheus 13th Apr 2015, 1:44 AM edit delete reply

It is possible to break every bone in a human body and still allow the subject to remain alive. I believe the Romans even had a name for the technique.
justjoe46 13th Apr 2015, 8:30 AM edit delete reply
Someone needs to "get Mid-evil" on Deck's "ass with a blow torch and a pair of pliers". The right "Mad Surgeon" could render Deck harmless, but still keep him alive.
DLKmusic 13th Apr 2015, 9:18 PM edit delete reply

Setorus: "Now as I do this procedure, Decimus, I want you to report how you feel, and how much pain you are in. Do try to be as honest as possible, as this IS for posterity."
Aetrun 14th Apr 2015, 7:41 PM edit delete reply
Ah, I love how that reminds me of a scene from my favorite movie. Thanks DLK.
Rashala 13th Apr 2015, 1:37 PM edit delete reply

BReak Kill Disintegrate Bury upside own in a pit of rabid piranahs and lime jellow Who cares. His Butt is GOING DOWNN!!!!
Stormwind13 13th Apr 2015, 1:59 PM edit delete reply

Just how many people he takes WITH him on that trip to HE!!, Rash, is what people care about. He is insane, prone to violence and apt to react poorly to any 'perceived' threats (real or imagined).
Sheela 13th Apr 2015, 4:56 PM edit delete reply

Well, at least Acantha will *only* break him.

If it was Setorious, he would end up with his brain grafted into a murderturd, but not in control.
Cal 14th Apr 2015, 1:22 PM edit delete reply
Killing him wouldn't be recompense for the suffering he's inflicted on other.

Breaking him might get close.
Rashala 14th Apr 2015, 5:13 PM edit delete reply

Meh I vote once Aerneas is fixed in disables the fail safe.. Maxus beats his a$$ up THEN Tedee does her boot up his BUtt.. THEN dolly gets to beat him to a paste .. THEN lynn gets to slowly kill him with a butter knife
Stormwind13 14th Apr 2015, 8:07 PM edit delete reply

Not a spoon, Rash? :-D
cattservant 13th Apr 2015, 12:46 AM edit delete reply

Well it felt good at the moment.
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 2:19 PM edit delete reply

Yep :D
mjkj 13th Apr 2015, 3:42 AM edit delete reply

Yayyy, go Acantha!!!

*lol* Setorius is his usual cool - and his thoughts really sum it up...

Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 2:17 PM edit delete reply

Honestly Setorius is always calm .. its his .. "thing" :D
Sheela 13th Apr 2015, 4:56 PM edit delete reply

No, no, the thing is some biological debris on his glass. XD
Guest 13th Apr 2015, 4:20 AM edit delete reply
the problem with assuming Deck will lash out like a cornered animal is that Deck does not consider himself one.
Stormwind13 13th Apr 2015, 2:03 PM edit delete reply

That is because he hasn't been pushed into a corner, yet, Guest. If people start pushing though, he will get there pretty quick. Doucheimus is a very dangerous animal, and will become even more so when 'threatened'.
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 2:16 PM edit delete reply

Good point :D
EyeQuestOn 13th Apr 2015, 4:43 AM edit delete reply

Hi Cent & Rose,

I held my peace when Kyle was shot: I was in shock that someone who I consider to be integral... Also I needed a cooling off period before I posted and was hoping it would turn out to be better than where it seemed to be going! Still can't believe that you allowed this to happen!!!

But... Above Setorius' conversation with Julia implies that he could be revived:... SO... "Make it so"... Please...

Regards from,

EyeQuestOn (Ian from Brighton, Sussex, UK)
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 2:15 PM edit delete reply

Sometimes bad things happen to good people Kyle made a terrible mistake and paid the price for it. All I can say is hang in there :D
Sheela 13th Apr 2015, 4:58 PM edit delete reply

Oh, Kyle gets hanged too ?

Who did he piss off this time ?
Lukkai 14th Apr 2015, 6:18 PM edit delete reply
Just from the city walls as an example and warning. Nothing to be worried about.
antrik 12th Oct 2016, 3:52 PM edit delete reply
Wait, what? There is actually someone who doesn't want Kyle dead?...
lorddarke 13th Apr 2015, 7:34 AM edit delete reply

The posing, composition and lighting are very well done! Great use of figures.

Ed.
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 2:19 PM edit delete reply

Thank you ! :D Welcome !
Hornet 13th Apr 2015, 8:44 AM edit delete reply
Here's hoping Acantha gets her wish.
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 2:19 PM edit delete reply

*crosses fingers* Right there with you :D
KarToon12 13th Apr 2015, 8:48 AM edit delete reply

I'm with ProfEtheric: I vote to change his name to "Doucheimus". XDXD
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 2:20 PM edit delete reply

Our personal nickname ( well mine is "Deckhead" ) Roses nicknames range from the unprintable .. to "That son of a bitch "
Cperka 13th Apr 2015, 12:22 PM edit delete reply

I wonder where is Setorius on Nova Roma political spectrum. He seems kinda apolitical to me.

Since he sounds like a reasonable man, I also assume he doesn't want to see Doucheimus SFB I on a throne much longer. But will he actually act on it somehow, or just stand as a spectator and enjoy the show, drinking something from biological debris-free glass.
Hornet 13th Apr 2015, 12:45 PM edit delete reply
Think he's more of a politicians come and politicians go. But don't screw with my research and I won't inject you with this flesh eating bacteria, capisci!
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 2:21 PM edit delete reply

Setorius tries to stay clear from as much of Roma's politics as possable but he just keeps getting dragged into them ..
Sheela 13th Apr 2015, 5:00 PM edit delete reply

He considers politics a disease.
Alas, he has not found a working cure for it yet.
CptKerion 13th Apr 2015, 10:48 PM edit delete reply
Or rather the cure is worse than the disease at this time.
MST3KFan 13th Apr 2015, 12:36 PM edit delete reply

Well, everyone has this all planned out, don't they?
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 2:14 PM edit delete reply

oh so very much -- wait till all the pieces fall into place :D
Cal 13th Apr 2015, 12:58 PM edit delete reply
Cent, Rose - got here from DJ's Whiteout, and just finished a start-to-current read.

Oh. My. Gods.

Datachasers joins DJs excellent work on my "Must-Read" list... this is AWESOME. You have a total fan here.
Centcomm 13th Apr 2015, 2:11 PM edit delete reply

Thank you SO MUCH! :D love hearing these things :D
HiFranc 13th Apr 2015, 2:24 PM edit delete reply

If you like this webcomic, I strongly recommend reading Luna Star.
CptKerion 13th Apr 2015, 2:30 PM edit delete reply
Honestly, this pair is great. I've been following the story for a few years now.
They even update frequently ontop of all the other awesome.

As a side note I've actually recommended Datachasers to most of my friends because a story like this is not exactly common.
HiFranc 13th Apr 2015, 10:30 PM edit delete reply

I just had a thought:

If you both like this one you might like a webcomic called Requiem that's published on the Spiderforest network. A search for:
requiem spider forest
should bring it up.
chk 13th Apr 2015, 3:15 PM edit delete reply

How does this reflect badly on Decimus? Did not Kyle pull a gun on him?

Not that Decimus shouldn't take a large fall, but this seems like self defense.
Phil 13th Apr 2015, 4:22 PM edit delete reply
Exactly!!!

I'm having difficulty going along with all this "outrage". Other than girlyfriend, noone there seems to have realistic justification for being all up in arms.
Deci has done lots of horrible things... but shooting and killing a man who was pointing a gun at him, is not one of them.
Stormwind13 13th Apr 2015, 4:57 PM edit delete reply

Mostly because people liked Kyle (a little bit), which is way MORE than they liked Doucheimus!

Plus Doucheimus kind of baited Kyle. He knew Kyle wasn't going to shoot him (Kyle didn't have the killer in him). Then he blew Kyle away as soon as he was distracted. Kyle was completely out of his league... and didn't know it.
chk 13th Apr 2015, 5:37 PM edit delete reply

I think (like pretty much everyone else) that el Doucheo is an unequivocal piece of shit.

That being said, I cannot see this action as anything other than self defense. He is, right or wrong, the Prince of the Realm with an apparent assassin aiming to shoot him down.
HiFranc 13th Apr 2015, 8:34 PM edit delete reply

What you say is correct but there were no cameras. Given his reputation for cruelty, other people are going to find it difficult to believe that it was self defence.

Furthermore, I suspect that every other person in the room has suffered at his hands so nobody has a good reason to come to his defence. Ruling through fear may get people to obey you but it won't get people to do that willingly. Also, if they do defend him others may interpret that action as insincere because the alternative was death or worse!

In short: His reputation works against him.
DLKmusic 13th Apr 2015, 8:39 PM edit delete reply

Seterus's thought on this was that there was no "impartial" witness to this event. everyone who saw it has their own agenda (political or otherwise), and as far as New Troy and New Sparta are concerned, Decimus, right or wrong, has just slightly less credibility than Charles Manson.

Once again, you girls are making me LIKE setorus too much to be creeped out by him! At this point, if he asked me to move a cadaver from the graveyard too his private lab, I would probably do it for him!
Antonious 13th Apr 2015, 5:27 PM edit delete reply

I think the idea is that Decimus was:
A) Well protected
B) Not really in much danger from Kyle. Simply letting Kyle and Lynn walk out of the area and into a well set ambush would have easily solved this AND given Decimus someone he could make an example of legitimately. You just don't walk in and threaten a head of state without repercussions. Even when that head is filled with the equivalent of rabid weasels.
Hornet 13th Apr 2015, 6:53 PM edit delete reply
No, you use a 50cal. grizzly from 2 miles away. Good thing I don't own or know how to shoot a grizzly at 2 miles...
CptKerion 13th Apr 2015, 10:37 PM edit delete reply
Anything reflects badly on you when you're the enemy. He'd have to prove Kyle leveled the gun with the intent to kill, and even if he did he'd only turn Kyle into a martyr of a different sort.
Men will march to war in a heartbeat over a martyr.
velvetsanity 14th Apr 2015, 8:36 AM edit delete reply

Hey now, that's a grave insult to the rabid weasels among the readers!
velvetsanity 14th Apr 2015, 8:42 AM edit delete reply

As if anyone not present who knows even a hint of drekhead's reputation would believe for even a heartbeat that it was anything other than drekhead finding a convenient way to torment/torture/break Lynn.
Kitty 13th Apr 2015, 6:11 PM edit delete reply
Personally, I like the thought of security keeping Dec VERY, VERY secure. Locked up in a safe room with no way out secure. "It's for your own safety, your highness!" Then you set up the communications to make him THINK he's issuing orders and receiving reports, all while the coup quietly takes place outside his room, sets Acantha on the throne, and life goes merrily on.

Six years in: "What's going on out there? Haven't you got those damned rebels sorted out yet?!"
Maxus: "Still working on it, sir." (Yawn. Looks at cards, chucks a couple of gold coins at Kali. "Raise you three crowns...")

OK, I'm dreaming. Actually the best and most efficient way to get rid of a certifiable nutcase with unlimited power is a round to the head of sufficient caliber to turn the head into coleslaw. Problem solved. But we'll just have to hang in there and see what happens, won't we? ;)
Stormwind13 13th Apr 2015, 6:38 PM edit delete reply

If not for the Contingencies, Kitty I think Doucheimus would already be worm food. And his skull being used for a beer stein. :-P
Hornet 13th Apr 2015, 6:56 PM edit delete reply
Agreed, Hey can we slip him a permanent roofie?
CptKerion 13th Apr 2015, 10:43 PM edit delete reply
If only the chunky salsa rule applied to contingencies as well.
Lukkai 14th Apr 2015, 6:24 PM edit delete reply
As was officially stated above: Sadly no.
CptKerion 13th Apr 2015, 10:55 PM edit delete reply
Decimus thine fate is sealed. Thine sister has been availed of her steel, and taste it soon thee shall.

Thine victory is incomplete, thine power not assured.

So know this thou, and know this well, that ruin shall claim thine body and wit, and see dragged to the depths of the abyss thine soul.
Tango Xray Actual 14th Apr 2015, 2:34 AM edit delete reply
Before you get your hopes up....

Mao lived to be 86 -
He was hated by many of his circle but they feared him more.
He is history's greatest democide (between 50-70 million victims).
He had none of Dec's contingency devices.
He died of natural causes.
Lukkai 14th Apr 2015, 6:25 PM edit delete reply
Not exactly the same circumstances though.
JP 14th Apr 2015, 4:59 AM edit delete reply
Seems to me that once Lynn calms down she will pull a "Marcus Portius Cato"

"Cetero Censeo Carthaginem Delendam Esse"

With Nova Roma replacing Carthago.
antrik 12th Oct 2016, 4:03 PM edit delete reply
I find it kinda ironic that after all the many horrible things Prince Headcase has done more or less before Acantha's eyes, it's the act of shooting a moron who was pointing a gun at him that finally seals her resolve...

(Of course, it *might* have something to do with his blood being splattered over her face, I guess...)
