Lucky bugger!
DLKmusic 3rd May 2015, 9:30 PM edit delete reply

Lucky? Maybe, but with those red eyes, it may be Rose, and Kyle might now be a Virtual Kyle....

With Rose as his guardian...
HiFranc 3rd May 2015, 9:45 PM edit delete reply

I suspect that you are right. After all the real Kyle is probably in the morgue having his blood harvested.
Haegan2005 3rd May 2015, 10:00 PM edit delete reply

brain download?
CptKerion 3rd May 2015, 10:18 PM edit delete reply
More like Rose as his taskmaster "Damn it Kyle, you had one job and you f***ed it up!"
Stormwind13 4th May 2015, 4:22 AM edit delete reply

Welcome to HELL, Kyle. A virtual world you can't escape from... with Tokyo Rose as your guide (Master). Sure are lucky, she gets to ride your a$$ for all eternity! Hanging up on Rose, you will be paying for that FOREVER!
Pirtnac 3rd May 2015, 10:29 PM edit delete reply
Counting 20 through 35. 36.5 is human body temperature. Looks like someone's being pulled out of stasis. Clone - Kyle? Type 4-something android transplanted from a human brain? (Which isn't in the tech and we haven't seen anything like it before, and would be a world altering event in and of itself, so both scenarios are somewhat unlikely)

Ooh! Or Rose moved his heart behind something armored during his "refit" and the "ripper" rounds weren't terminal because they're designed to shred unarmored things. I'm guessing the doctor may have opened him up and is currently working.

This means Rose is talking face to face with him on his own personal loading screen. Hopefully the VR is detailed enough to let her slap the silly out of him.
Stormwind13 4th May 2015, 9:14 AM edit delete reply

I'm thinking it might be blood pressure, Pirtnac. It could come back fairly quickly. Raising the temperature that fast could do some serious damage to a body.

Nah, she's just torturing Kyle. :D
Guest 3rd May 2015, 9:55 PM edit delete reply
Surprise the reader with somesthing plausible.

Every story depends on the readers willing belief to stay in the story, but this is a turn beond belief! Take any writers book about storrytelling, for instance from James N. Frey, Elizabeth George or Syd Field.
Thers is a webcomic who was once in the top ten at topwebcomics and made the same mistake and is currently at 87. So either Kyle is dead and stays there or Your story takes a dive Your choice.
Btw. the mentioned autors write on books or film, but the principels also go here.

With sad greetings: Unknown
Thor 3rd May 2015, 10:21 PM edit delete reply
This is fully plausible. Kyle was set up to be Rose's way in, and she did some upgrades on him while he was unconscious on the flight in. Also she knew from moment one how reckless he is,b so for her not to enhance his duraility would have been implausibly short-sighted of her. And finally, if she wasn't sure that he'd be retreivable, she never would have given the order which inevitably ended with getting him shot. Really, having him end up as permanently dead would have been the more implausible of the two options.
anonymous coward 3rd May 2015, 11:11 PM edit delete reply
I think it's probably more likely that this is a Kyle-sim in virtulity since keeping a real person alive that's missing major organs is kinda unlikely. Rose greeting him in person supports this since I doubt she has a doll in Nova Roma.
DLKmusic 3rd May 2015, 11:44 PM edit delete reply

It's only supposition at this point that it is Rose greeting him Anonymous, even though that is the belief of most of us. That being said, the revelation that there were nanites in his blood opened a lot of possibilities. Especially for a society that's roughly 1600 years more advanced that our current one. That includes the possibility that they were spending the last month recording Kyle's brainwave patterns for exactly this purpose. for the 39th century, that is not that implausible

With that being said, I too kinda want to see a Virtual Rose slap the Virtual snot out of a Virtual Kyle before she puts a collar and leash on him.

If this is Virtual, I think our Diabolical Duo are about to keep their promise and give us Rose's background in more detail.

and unfortunately, it will be at Kyle's expense.
Centcomm 4th May 2015, 2:10 AM edit delete reply

AT DLK all i will say is that yes more about Rose WILL Be revealed as time goes on !
mjkj 4th May 2015, 4:53 AM edit delete reply

DLK: this is Rose speaking - these are her word bubbles (white with red brim)!
Stormwind13 4th May 2015, 6:17 AM edit delete reply

Yeah mjkj, I was just going to comment on that. Good catch. :-)
Centcomm 4th May 2015, 2:07 AM edit delete reply

All i can say is that it will all be explained .. :P

Also please remember Kyle is NOT normal.. Hes "enhanced" in a number of ways.
xpacetrue 4th May 2015, 3:43 AM edit delete reply

"Every story depends on the readers willing belief to stay in the story..."

True. Though, a willingness to suspend disbelief varies greatly from person to person and depends on the gimmicks used, the readers'/viewers' knowledge of such devices and how believable the circumstances are.

For instance, not everyone would buy that someone survived by way of a clone - or the gimmick whereby the hero who was the story's focus was actually the clone and not the original. But there are those who find it believable, as evidenced by how often it's used in media. (Used very often in comic books.)

Also, the way film (and other media) abuses nanites makes it seem nearly magical. Because it's so cutting edge and mostly theoretical writers can use it to achieve nearly any miraculous results they want, whether it's resurrecting the dead, transformation to a different creature, the creation of cybernetic implants, etc. Some find it more believable than others.

"...but this is a turn beond belief!"

It seems unfair to call a lack of believability when a) this is the far future with some very advanced tech and b) you haven't given this story the opportunity to explain what just happened. Heck, all we know at this point is that some form of Kyle (mind, body, clone, etc) has survived.

"Take any writers book about storrytelling..."

Is there only one way to correctly write a story? Myself, I think too many writers follow a traditional story structure as taught in most creative writing books, articles, and courses. I think it tends to make stories more predictable than they might otherwise be.

I have an axe to grind with how most still seem to use "rising tension theory" and typical models of conflict and climax resolution on the belief that repeatedly jacking up the suspense is supposed to keep readers/viewers hooked on the story.

That said, it is a matter of taste. Some love the adrenaline rush of the horror genre or action flicks like "Live Free or Die Hard". And others (like myself) do not find it appealing.

And this unexpected turn of events may not be to everyone's liking. But it has already piqued my interest. Why wouldn't it be more interesting than Kyle as a dead body in a morgue? Though, I expect Cent will have a pretty good explanation.
Sheela 4th May 2015, 4:54 AM edit delete reply

*smells troll*
*feeds troll nitroglycerine*

As for what xpacetrue said, there are a limited number of ways to tell a story, as we can only receive stories in real time, thus they must be somewhat linear and have a beginning and an end.

Also, "believeable" is a tricky thing.
Have you ever tried to explain to a young kid how there was no internet when you were young ?

And for gods sake, don't tell them about the "oral tradition", or they'll just think you ran around giving everyone blowjobs!

True story, I kid you not! >_<
Boren 5th May 2015, 9:10 PM edit delete reply
What is believable within a given story depends a lot on what the story establishes as possible, and how the characters within the story react to certain things. It's a issue I've had for a long time with several Forgotten Realms stories I've liked, these high level protagonists run around acting like "Oh no so and so might die" when in that world it's really not a big thing for a person of sufficient wealth to be brought back to life. This was something I deliberately made very clear when I tried writing something that resurrection existed in this world and my charterers not only had access to it, but were capable of providing it themselves so it could be used later as a story element.
chk 4th May 2015, 6:14 AM edit delete reply

Who cares about other authors' formulaic writing styles.

This is different and it's brilliant.

This is to be read, graphics enjoyed, and see what develops.
DLKmusic 4th May 2015, 1:27 PM edit delete reply

@Guest. While I disagree with your comment, I won't deny that it is an intelligent one. With your permission, I have one of my own.

IF you are going to offer a critique on literary style, you will be taken much more seriously if you use correct grammar and spelling. In other words, show that you know how to write properly before criticizing the writings of others.
Guest 4th May 2015, 3:18 PM edit delete reply
Sory about grammar and spelling. English is NOT my native language.
Stormwind13 5th May 2015, 4:51 AM edit delete reply

One of the problems with the internet, DLK... thinking everyone lives right 'next door'. When in fact they may be in some county we've never heard of!

If English isn't 'native' they did quite well.

Might help though, if they register. Show they are really following the comic, not just being a troll 'guest'. Then they could put in their country, which would let people know to cut them some slack. :-)

Having said that, I also strongly disagree with them. Seems like every time I think I have things figured out, the EVIL duo serve up a truly NASTY curveball that makes me rethink everything!!!
DLKmusic 5th May 2015, 9:05 AM edit delete reply

You may think harshly of me for this, but I stand by my comment. If he is citing college textbooks on English composition, he needs to demonstrate that he has a grasp of the fundamentals of the subject.
Centcomm 5th May 2015, 12:57 PM edit delete reply

One of the things we are very careful of is to stay consistent with our own technology - this means in essence that if a maguffin is used to fix a Problem it will ALWAYS work to fix a problem one way or another. like wise if we decide to suspend or change a rule of "real" to support the story we shall try to do our best to stay consistent with that "change" Like asking the reader to accept that sentient machines are able to act and feel human. its a rule of OUR universe. and trust me when I try something that is "too far" out there I get to hear it not only from Rose but Mister Black and several others as well.

So trust me when I say everything that happens has a reason - and unlike star trek - that has millions of fans and support .. we will not be doing time travel. :D
xpacetrue 4th May 2015, 4:52 PM edit delete reply

Speaking of webcomic deaths and believability:

It just so happens that the main character of a popular webcomic (usually in the top 100) was killed about a week ago. His friends came to rescue him from torture/kidnapping, but they didn't have time to extract him from life support. So one of them severed his head and stuck it in a "save-it-bag". He just reappeared in today's comic after they downloaded his brain into an android body. (Oh, and despite being human, his old fleshy body was around 500 years old.) Perhaps the author worried about bringing a dead character back like that (i.e., a protagonist doesn't stay dead) because during the rescue one of the rescuers and dear friend died permanently (head shot and no brain pattern back up).
Sheela 4th May 2015, 6:02 PM edit delete reply

Heh, there's a webcomic called Slimy Thief, where this week, the protagonist just got cut in half .. literally! And in a gory way too!

We still don't know if she will survive it!
Boren 5th May 2015, 9:15 PM edit delete reply
I used to read that comic a long time ago, I thought it had died

Centcomm : "Mua ha ha ha ha!"
Stormwind13 4th May 2015, 6:16 AM edit delete reply

Actually I was thinking Tokyo Rose might (SHOULD) do exactly this, Sheela. Grind Kyle's nose in just what a BAD idea it is to screw with Rose's plans. Scare Kyle so he would NEVER consider doing that again! Since he is an teenage BOY, it takes a REALLY big hammer to get his attention. Especially since he is in 'love' & she is in danger, reducing his ability to actually plan something (useful) from poor to no chance in HELL!
mjkj 4th May 2015, 9:44 AM edit delete reply

*lol* that would be fun, Sheela ^_^

"I'm going to kill you, then raise you, then kill you again until either I'm happy or you run out of diamonds"
That cleric also charged party members for healing spells if they wouldn't convert to his deity :)

XRzer04 4th May 2015, 1:23 AM edit delete reply

Ha! I knew it! I Called it! I was Sure we hadn't seen the last of that kid. I shut up about it because I thought I might have been wrong, but here he Is! Had to be. Everyone wants to see him get slapped in the back of the head. The dumbass... Unless poking the dangerous animal with a stick just to bring the situation to a quick head was part of the plan... It does seem to have galvanized Acantha into action, and it's propelled the girls directly to Anaeas, where they are hopefully out of harm's way so everyone else can play rough. Perhaps Kyle's entry into the system to repair Anaeas required his "death" as an excuse to get him into the medical wing and get his brain plugged into something connected to the network. We're not exactly sure what he's been up to lately, but almost certainly it didn't involve access to highly monitored network terminals, not as the servant he appeared to be. And who knows what Rose's people on the inside set up? The shooting may have been a piece of theater in which the dangerous animal behaved exactly as he was expected to, however unwittingly. AI's are smart like that...
Centcomm 4th May 2015, 2:09 AM edit delete reply

LOL - Slap Kyle in the back of the head! For Sure!
Timotheus 4th May 2015, 3:09 AM edit delete reply

Simplest solution is dead Kyle was a puppet being run unknowingly by Kyle prime, who was in stasis somewhere safe. What was needed was his knowledge and brainwaves, and that could be taken in by a proxy "Kyle" that would pass muster as a human. (Technology we've been shown already exists, "dolls",) Hence how he could be so heavily "modified" during such a short flight. Kyle had full control of his doppleganger, and got it killed as shown. But its true nature won't be revealed until it's autopsied.
(I had a hunch Kyle wasn't "dead" dead, but not sure how it was going to be played.) ((I know, easy to say after the fact.))
Sheela 4th May 2015, 5:06 AM edit delete reply

Boy will Decimus be surprised, when the next Kyle-Doll comes to try and shoot him again. :D
