Now comes how short the leash is. probably no more than 3mm.
Haegan2005 7th May 2015, 9:18 PM edit delete reply

THAT long eh?
Stormwind13 8th May 2015, 8:26 AM edit delete reply

Leash jamie? I was thinking Rose was going to have her hand up his butt turning Kyle into a sock puppet!!!
Phil 8th May 2015, 12:13 PM edit delete reply
Where's the "like" button? I really, really want a 'like' button right now.
jamie59 8th May 2015, 7:48 PM edit delete reply

Sock puppet Love that one. Wish I'd thought of that.

We sort of have a like button, you can vote for the comic on Top Web Comics, and Comic Basement.
There's links to them at the bottom of the page.

You can even support them on Patreon. Patreon is love! :)
Lukkai 9th May 2015, 7:06 PM edit delete reply

Pretty sure Phil was talking about an option for comments.
Sheela 11th May 2015, 11:35 AM edit delete reply

Oh .. I guess that would be kinda neat.

Though I wouldn't want the comments to become a popularity contest.
Haegan2005 7th May 2015, 9:17 PM edit delete reply

either Rose has a lot of life experience or she has a high level of empathy. Or both.

And yes, i can still see she is mad!
anonymous coward 8th May 2015, 8:02 AM edit delete reply
Or, and this is just a guess, she has a little bit of humility about the fact that she was trying to use a human being as a chess-piece without that human being having been trained for the role. If she were really so arrogant as to expect Kyle to behave wisely when the very fact of his jumping into her plans in the first place was not even slightly wise that would be, uh, stupid.
Stormwind13 8th May 2015, 8:10 AM edit delete reply

Looking back to when Rose 'recruited' Kyle, Haegan, I get the feeling Rose has a sh!tload of empathy. Kyle made some comment about Rose, and her (too me at least) sharp reply back was, You have no idea all I've lost, boy!

I think Rose has suffered some serious sh!t in her past. Yet she is still fighting to make the world a better place. That speaks to me of an INCREDIBLY caring 'person'. Anyone that has seen, endured what Rose undoubtedly has and still try to make the world a better place is not the person most people think she is. The gruff personality is a mask to protect the real Rose, I think.
Sheela 9th May 2015, 5:30 AM edit delete reply

Rose has all sorts of mad skillz, she's even good with kids!

... parents, on the other hand ..
Dragonrider 7th May 2015, 9:29 PM edit delete reply

OK he has had his first ass chewing on this segment of the adventure. Versions 2,3 etc will get progressively worse. Unless he gets smarter fast.

A question here both the way he acted and what he said make me think that His Popeness Setorius Axinian may be in on the plot to remove SFB #1 from power or his spies are better than SFB#1's spies and he is hedging his bet and covering his A$$.
Timotheus 7th May 2015, 9:37 PM edit delete reply

Subcutaneous body armor installed (or grown) in such a short time along with skeletal re-enforcement to take the impact in such a short time does seem to be pushing the credibility envelope, but it's not my story. And those still look like puncture plugs in his chest to keep him from deflating.
Stormwind13 8th May 2015, 10:00 AM edit delete reply

I think the armor was in place already. Causing the rounds to glance off instead of chewing through Kyle's heart. The nano-swarm was to repair the tissue damage and stop the blood loss, I believe. Which I find plausible, given the technology they have demonstrated already.
Tokyo Rose 8th May 2015, 2:53 PM edit delete reply

The changes were underway from the time he drank the tea. Internally armoring a human body without sacrificing flexibility is difficult, but jacketing the organs in what amounts to a Kevlar mesh let the rounds push them out of the way instead of tearing them up. Bruising them, yes, but not shredding them into salsa.

(The marks on his chest are just scars from the bullet entry wounds.)
Centcomm 8th May 2015, 3:06 PM edit delete reply

also the rounds used are best against "soft targets" not armored ones. the bullets began breaking up the moment they hit and once they encountered the armor web work they just bounced and kept going.. the surface damage is just from the passing of them though him .. they didnt really get much of a chance to do any real damage .. then the Swarm shut down his musciles and voentary functions so he looked "dead" notice aside from splatter.. there was no blood pool under him.. and no spurting blood ..so very little blood was actually lost .. all the clues are there .. and yes this is WELL within the tech we have set forth ..

also a fun fact .. a lot of people ( movies aside ) DO actually survive being shot. IF they get prompt medical care.. and Kyle had what amounts to a full surgical team literally swarming in his blood stream ...
Timotheus 8th May 2015, 6:36 PM edit delete reply

Like I said, it's your story and your reality trumps my opinion. But they still look like pop-in pressure plugs.(:{)
Tokyo Rose 10th May 2015, 2:56 PM edit delete reply

What, like a patch on a blow-up sex doll? ;D
Timotheus 10th May 2015, 5:48 PM edit delete reply

They could be used for such. Also swimming pools, parade balloons, container liners (where I know them from), fuel tanks, and all sorts of puncture holes. They're like super sized pop rivets with teflon or neoprene gaskets.
Sheela 11th May 2015, 11:36 AM edit delete reply

... you use blow-up sex dolls as parade ballons ?

Engeeenius! :D
Thor 7th May 2015, 9:52 PM edit delete reply
In defense of kids everywhere, most kids that know enough to tinker with a complex piece of machinery without electrocuting themselves also have a solid understanding of the word "covert". *Especially* if they are also commonly hacking systems and going where they shouldn't. Kyle still deserves everything he got and anything that Rose might do to him, "kid in love" or not.
Pirtnac 7th May 2015, 10:07 PM edit delete reply
And a standing ovation for Rose! Fess up, how much did you enjoy writing that? :)

I don't think there will be much more chewing out by Rose. Kyle (or Leeroy if anyone's played WoW) needs to be up and moving, not curled up on the morgue slab crying.
HiFranc 7th May 2015, 10:27 PM edit delete reply

When you said "Leeroy", I thought about someone else.
xpacetrue 8th May 2015, 2:48 AM edit delete reply

That "Leeroy Jenkins" screwup was so epic that it long ago spread beyond the domain of WoW fans. I've never played WoW in my life, but I've seen the video and well aware of the name. Today, it has become a big Internet meme, and even has a page on Wikipedia. What I find amazing is how far it's spread. A question on Jeopardy? And, apparently, the National Geographic series Inside Combat Rescue, covering USAF Pararescue troopers in Afghanistan, recorded them using "Leeroy Jenkins" as code for "Let's do this!"
cattservant 7th May 2015, 10:26 PM edit delete reply

Rose would admit that?
Bet no one else heard her say it!
Stormwind13 8th May 2015, 7:04 AM edit delete reply

No bets, catt! She can't normally show that much empathy, that much vulnerability in the harsh world of Data Chasers.

I expect she would vehemently deny that conversation if Kyle tries to say anything about it.
Sheela 9th May 2015, 12:51 AM edit delete reply

No bets !

Right now, Kyle is the only one who can see her.
Stormwind13 9th May 2015, 6:51 AM edit delete reply

Who watches the watchers, Sheela? Are we SURE no one else can see that? I know it is in a virtual world but there are AI's around. Some of whom appear to be at least paying attention to Nova Roma right now.
Sheela 9th May 2015, 9:29 AM edit delete reply

I'm watching the watchers, I thought we had already established that ?

Rose does it too, though she does it mostly because spying is fun and it makes for good blackmail material.
mjkj 7th May 2015, 11:25 PM edit delete reply

Hmmmm, that sounds like Rose is on a loop: ...shit... *repeat*

...and quite tame, too.

I think there should have been at least some variety...

...I wonder whom Lynn and Acantha will run into while making their exit...

Stormwind13 8th May 2015, 4:19 AM edit delete reply

Possibly playing to her audience, mjkj. I mean Kyle is still in a state of shock (being shot can do that to one). Once he gets past the shock then Rose can blast him and expect it to stick! :-)
DLKmusic 7th May 2015, 11:33 PM edit delete reply

I may be the only one who noticed this, but Rose's approach is very typical of an HR Review of an employee who's about to sign a written repremand.

Something negative, something positive, something negative, share part of the blame... (soon to be followed by something negative, Then a forshadowing of Future consequences, then finally a solution to keep it from happening again).

I have 2 of these "meetings" I have to give next week, and am not looking forward to it, lol... do you work in HR IRL, Rose?
Tokyo Rose 8th May 2015, 2:46 PM edit delete reply

Nope. I did tech support for way too long, though. :D
DLKmusic 8th May 2015, 5:30 PM edit delete reply

Ah, so you've done your time in the trenches then! We have a poll going in the office right now of which customer statement is dreaded the most!

A: "I have a simple question".
B: "One more quick thing".

Which one gives you more nightmares?
Tokyo Rose 8th May 2015, 5:33 PM edit delete reply

They're both dreadful, and often occur together, but B has my vote for the same reason it makes doctors want to shank someone: because it comes just as you're wrapping up, looking forward to your break or whatever, and it's inevitably something about three hundred times worse than the "simple question" ever was.
Sheela 9th May 2015, 12:53 AM edit delete reply

And then, right after you're finally done answering *that* question, one of their relatives/friends also have a "simple question" !

.. yeah, I've been in Tech Support too. Ugh!
DLKmusic 9th May 2015, 9:18 PM edit delete reply

My vote actually goes to "simple question". As you said, Rose, chances are that if you get one, you'll get the other. but if he/she doesn't start with "simple question", the odds of "one more thing" go way down!
Haegan2005 9th May 2015, 10:40 PM edit delete reply

At least my time in tech support was for only store related comp issues. While I had the option of pulling rank by calling their supervisors, it was not something I ever had to do. Of course, when we got the call they were normally down and were willing to jump through hoops to get eh comps back up!
ProfEtheric 7th May 2015, 11:43 PM edit delete reply

At least Rose realizes that her choice for agent here may not have been the best. That being said, if she doesn't chew his ass, he'll never learn.

Now it's all about damage control/
Sheela 9th May 2015, 12:54 AM edit delete reply

Well, he sort of is the best, as there isn't any others around with his skillset and motivation.
xpacetrue 8th May 2015, 2:57 AM edit delete reply

I've been under the impression that Rose has agents and 'points of interest' not just in Nova Roma, but in other places around the globe.

Assuming Kyle makes it through this and grows up, I have to wonder if Rose may use him and his computer skills again some day on another of her black ops projects. If so, I'd imagine that Rose may occasionally remind me of this particular screwup. If nothing else, Kyle should know that he owes her.
Stormwind13 8th May 2015, 4:25 AM edit delete reply

Once Rose gets her hooks into someone I don't think she lets them get away, xpace. Kyle will be 'helping' her out on special projects for the rest of his life (however short that turns out to be - looking at the EVIL CentComm).
Sheela 9th May 2015, 12:55 AM edit delete reply

Hotdogs help us, Kyle will end up like Dr Silver ?
Lukkai 9th May 2015, 7:23 PM edit delete reply

DLKmusic 10th May 2015, 10:05 AM edit delete reply
Here that, Kyle? She OWNS your arse!!!!
MST3KFan 8th May 2015, 5:03 AM edit delete reply

That bedside manner. XD
KarToon12 8th May 2015, 7:19 AM edit delete reply

Key word on this page is "shit". XD
Sheela 9th May 2015, 12:55 AM edit delete reply

No shit? :)
chk 8th May 2015, 9:45 AM edit delete reply

Rose is so sweet.
DLKmusic 8th May 2015, 8:08 PM edit delete reply

That's why we love her so much! well, that and the mind control chip implants...
Sheela 9th May 2015, 12:56 AM edit delete reply

And her highspeed access to porn.

Besides, the mind control chip is only a test, if you can't break it's hold on you, you don't belong.
Plus it was kinda tasty with ketchup on it. :)
Morituri 8th May 2015, 12:23 PM edit delete reply
I really expected that Rose would be breaking out the weapons-grade vocabulary she's beloved for and tearing him a new one, but other than the word "shit" coming up apparently out of sheer frustration, she's being very sympathetic, even gentle, with Kyle.

My own mental theater for this moment had phrases like "wasted a trillion fuckin' credits on grade-A equipment for this ride and neglected to replace your fucking grade-Z brain" and "That clusterfuck in there was not only the dumbest possible expenditure of assets a chimp could have done better than, but it also put your precious girlfriend's life in even more danger - along with, you know, you and this whole fucking city which would be a smoking crater right now if Deckshit's heart had stopped beating, you needle-dicked bug fucker!"
Rashala 8th May 2015, 1:31 PM edit delete reply

rose.....Seriously all those things you listed are Warnign signs of =PRONE TO IDIOTIC THINGS!!!!=
CptKerion 8th May 2015, 7:00 PM edit delete reply
Rose... why? Why would you send him?
Of all qualified people, why him?
Tokyo Rose 8th May 2015, 7:54 PM edit delete reply

He was going anyway, and he has exactly the right skill set. If only said skill set was attached to someone with better impulse control...
Rashala 9th May 2015, 12:21 AM edit delete reply

Yeah yeah and Monkeys in a room with typewriters rose.... At least he did nt fark things up TOO much
Stormwind13 9th May 2015, 6:45 AM edit delete reply

Waiting to see how bad he farked things up, Rash. See how many people are still alive at the end of the 'adventure' before we'll know the answer to that.

Kyle's sticking his spoon in to stir things up has set a bunch of people in motion now. No one's plans survived contact with Kyle and his stupid action hero imitation. :-D
CptKerion 9th May 2015, 10:44 PM edit delete reply
You see rose, impulse control is why you neuter them first.
Stormwind13 10th May 2015, 6:16 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, but then they don't reproduce. And Kyle DOES have a few good genes to add to the gene pool. Just hard to realize it when he is THAT young and impetuous.
Professor Fate 9th May 2015, 9:17 AM edit delete reply
The body, armored organs notwithstanding, is remarkably resilient to even the most grevious of wounds. There are documented instances of individuals shot through the heart who kept fighting until finally being brought down with other wounds. In one instance, a sergeant kept shooting at the enemy even after being shot through the heart. He continued to do so even on a stretcher being medevaced.
Lukkai 9th May 2015, 7:25 PM edit delete reply

So that's what those red eyes were. Respectively where they came from.
Tokyo Rose 10th May 2015, 2:58 PM edit delete reply

Cent intentionally put both Miraiko and Rose in the same dress to confuse things a little. Remember, Cent is mean! ;D
Centcomm 10th May 2015, 3:35 PM edit delete reply

Rose and Miriako have the same color hair .. the first thing Kyle saw is Rose. and yeah .. im mean :D
