Very much the Mechanized approach. Where is the armored and armed flash mob?
Haegan2005 14th Jul 2015, 9:09 PM edit delete reply

Lost in the bathroom, give em a few to get oriented and find their way out!
Centcomm 14th Jul 2015, 11:16 PM edit delete reply

doing stuff .. elsewhere :D
HiFranc 15th Jul 2015, 1:25 AM edit delete reply

The flash mob's job was to draw fire from the palace -- in essence to act as a distraction.
Sheela 15th Jul 2015, 5:05 AM edit delete reply

Also, flash mobs are delicious!

*looks around*
It wasn't me! I didn't eat them!

Hey, where did my slippers go? Is that a duck?

Lukkai 16th Jul 2015, 7:00 PM edit delete reply

He's actually not demonic at all. And may go on strike if used to often.

Also if you're going to invoke him at a party, at least make sure it's an adult one with some booze and the odd hot, duck-loving girl or two around. He digs that.

(And with all due respect to any other creators of great work, EGS is still my favourite webcomic.)

Because the cat burglars are busy infiltrating the enemy base at night, and stealing all their cookies.

For great justice, ofcourse.

The Old Scribe 14th Jul 2015, 10:28 PM edit delete reply

The Eagles have landed, or, in this case, are attacking. World of hurt in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

This fictional scenario of mechanized drone warfare may not be as far fetched as it seems. Actual drone development and level of sophistication is progressing at a significantly faster rate than comparable powered flight has in history. Reason being, no meat sack that needs protecting, so all R&D can go into propulsion, guidance, armor and weaponry. In the not too distant future, the fighter pilot may well go the way of the Dodo bird.
DLKmusic 14th Jul 2015, 10:41 PM edit delete reply

Drone Technology IS progressing at an alarming rate, but that then raises the question, what about Anti-Drone technology? I'm sure it exists, and is highly classified.

My prediction is that fighter pilots won't ever become obsolete, but their role in modern warfare will dramatically change over the next 30 years. this is a very unsettling thought, btw.
Centcomm 14th Jul 2015, 11:18 PM edit delete reply

Amusingly enough we have drones right now that are remotely piloted that can put a good sized hurt on someone or something..

these are just .. better at it.
CptKerion 15th Jul 2015, 9:00 PM edit delete reply
I find that, based on hefty experience with wargames, triangulating the control signal's origin and dropping a cruise missile is quite effective.
Sheela 15th Jul 2015, 9:21 PM edit delete reply

I rather suspect that while drones are going to be very popular, the main "punch" of tomorrow's army will be small smart missiles, that can be fired form 40-50 miles away.

That way they could get rid of all those expensive jetplanes, and just have a few trucks with missiles on the back driven around in the general area they want to punch in the face.
Mark_L_A 15th Jul 2015, 10:35 PM edit delete reply

Sheela the US and Russia have that now.

Both have a "Drone" missile which basically a smaller version of the Tomahawk Cruise Missile that can be launched from Ships, Subs, Planes,MLRS, and Connex Containers that have a range of between 15 miles and 3000 miles.

With the capability of using both nuclear, non-nuclear and chemical warheads.
Sheela 16th Jul 2015, 12:39 AM edit delete reply

No, no .. smarter than that.
I'm thinking borderline A.I. class missiles.
The kind of missile that can see the difference on an innocent bystander and an armed terrorist, dressed up as an innocent bystander.

The missiles we have right now, are positively dumb, in comparison.
Hornet 16th Jul 2015, 6:27 AM edit delete reply
given the blast radius of a type missile warhead why would it care to be that exact? Now if the missile was carrying a 7.62 machine gun to fire at personal then it might matter. However we already have drones carrying both missile and gun payloads..
anonymous coward 16th Jul 2015, 8:13 AM edit delete reply
What you really want for the coming age of 'drone warfare' is cars with racks of small smart missiles for taking down all those drones. They only have to be a couple orders of magnitude cheaper than the drone is to render drone assault a net negative to attempt. I mean, a dang MQ-9 costs 17 million bucks, if you're shooting those down for two hundred thousand dollars each or less you've just made 'drone warfare' a losing move. I'm sure it could be done cheaper judging by what is coming out of modern civilian space launch technology these days.
DLKmusic 16th Jul 2015, 10:34 AM edit delete reply

Like I said Anonymous, our current anti-drone technology is highly classified. we can only guess at what it might be. My personal guess would be a unidirectional EMP system. that could take out a drone without effecting the power grid of the area it's trying to protect.

Unfortunately, we don't know, because our government won't talk about it (rightfully so). But when I look at some of the technology coming out of companies like 3-Com these days that are unclassified, I lose sleep over what they have that is top secret that I don't even know to guess about.
anonymous coward 16th Jul 2015, 5:19 PM edit delete reply
You're American, right? Don't lose sleep over the top secret stuff: It's all either broken, too secret to use, to politically sensitive to use, or not done yet. Anything that they actually would use quickly breaks through the secrecy because there are just too many people to hide the secret from to keep it.
Besides, SAM batteries are ancient tech that goes back a half a century, which works reliably enough with laser designation. There's no reason why aerial drone control wouldn't use them since they've got better range and better guarantee of stopping power on a drone than pointing an over-powered radar array at it and trying to make it melt.
Mark_L_A 16th Jul 2015, 8:46 PM edit delete reply

DLK we do have a unidirectional EMP device. Jane's Defense posted on it just a few weeks back and got a take down order by the government.
DLKmusic 16th Jul 2015, 9:03 PM edit delete reply

The thought of someone taking down a commercial jet with one of those is a frightening thought, my friend. I hope to God it isn't portable.
Mark_L_A 17th Jul 2015, 12:27 AM edit delete reply

According to the article before it got taken down, it needs to be in an aircraft the size of a 737. That was basically a;; Jane's had, a aimed directional EMP Device that can only be used in large airframes currently due to power requirements.
Lukkai 16th Jul 2015, 7:11 PM edit delete reply

Sheela: The pilotes we have right now are positively dumb in comparison.

And that's not (not necessarily at the least) their fault. Quite often it's simply not possible to reach a clear verdict in the short time you have for the decision. With humans, of course, our subconscious wish to see something where it might not be comes into play as an additional factor.
cattservant 14th Jul 2015, 10:50 PM edit delete reply

This is why you don't screw around with a highly technically advanced city state run by an AI with a notorious past.
Centcomm 14th Jul 2015, 11:16 PM edit delete reply

Hey didn't Acantha predict something like this would happen?
Stormwind13 15th Jul 2015, 4:30 AM edit delete reply

Which proves she has a functioning brain, CentComm. Anyone with a functioning brain should have been able to see that pissing off New Troy was NOT a good idea.
Hornet 15th Jul 2015, 6:37 AM edit delete reply
Yes she did, however I think she envisioned more of the carpet bombing verse precision bombing response.
velvetsanity 15th Jul 2015, 4:05 PM edit delete reply

Don't you mean anyone with more than two functioning neurons? (Drekhead has two: 'I want', and 'I hurt you')
anonymous coward 15th Jul 2015, 7:46 AM edit delete reply
At the moment, New Troy's hostage rescue gambit is operating undercover without official sanction, but it is only in "plausible deniability" not an official New Troy military operation violating Nova Roma sovereignty. It is a New Troy military operation that is in ur base killing ur dudes and Decimus has shown that he has a real talent for avoiding caution, circumspection and prudence when faced with complex situations like that. If this op doesn't get sufficient cover from the riot (and Decimus' brainfart of attacking his own senior leadership during a pre-war crisis) that's the start of combat in the war between New Troy and Nova Roma.
The interesting thing about a nation with armed forces posturing for war is that (traditionally) mobilization involves collecting those forces for deployment. Those force concentrations can very easily become legitimate military targets when someone like Decimus Livius acts and speaks as he is prone to. I'd imagine Nova Roma hasn't yet announced to the world they're taking Lynn Taylor as a slave. But if they do announce that, or openly move to assault New Troy, or openly and specifically declare war, the ordnance might not come from New Troy guessing by Calliope's chatter about Lunar relatives after her call to Decimus. I bet you Decimus would not have long to regret his decisions after his army gets rocked into the stone age. (Not sure what the hypothetical history books would name that action, The Kidnapping War? Threat Assessment 100: Remember That Your Enemies Can Have Allies?)
Marcus Ramesy 15th Jul 2015, 8:45 AM edit delete reply

as much as luna throwing rocks at things is fun.. politically they can not since they have adamantly taken a neutral stance on all things and refuse to involve them selves in any political activities on the ground... it would severely impact their communications monopoly
Centcomm 15th Jul 2015, 8:50 AM edit delete reply

The caveate to that is that if a ground force or persons or group actively attacks or sabotages Luna Operations or Personnel or interferes with any space craft. They are VERY protective of there own.

Even Gangers in the wastes tend to avoid Luna bases and Operations because the response is simply far to much for them to handle. Heck even Deck isn't stupid enough to piss on Luna ..

The Most Luna might do in a New Troy VS New Rome war is offer to send negotiators to Attempt to help end it peaceable ...
Marcus Ramesy 15th Jul 2015, 9:33 AM edit delete reply

LUNA: now now children ... be nice

All DC Cast: death glare in direction of luna

anonymous coward 15th Jul 2015, 2:40 PM edit delete reply
With respect, you have created a Caligula-alike dumb enough to purge his leadership while angling for war. Don't underestimate his stupidity, he has to have been really moronic to get this far.
That one guy 15th Jul 2015, 6:20 PM edit delete reply
Well, considering that New Troy & New Sparta are kinda' run by their AIS and both Centcom & Deep Blue are in the know about the kidnapping, there are no civilizations in North America that aren't aware. Tokyo Rose is aware too, though how much that's due to her assets in place not being able to avoid tripping over it versus it being common knowledge in other remainders of civilization we haven't heard of yet hasn't been addressed.

Considering that Luna provides all the communications, they know if they care to. While they may not bother tapping all the calls they route (wouldn't bet on it), you'd think negotiations between the nominal heads of state of two of the remaining pockets of civilization would make prime targets for a "let's listen in to see if we need to avoid anything else to stay out of other peoples' wars"-type rationale.

I'm finally caught up here. It took me a few months because I had to read all the comments as well. What a great bunch! And I've never before come across authors as involved in the comments as I have here.

And I'm not worried about Sheela's attraction to toes. I grew up with a dog that had a fondness for toe cheese.

Nope .. they are smart enough to work the mission without her.. After Murdering the crap out of whatever killed here..

Although there are things She can do they cant.. as you will see :D
Sheela 16th Jul 2015, 12:40 AM edit delete reply

If she got taken out, could Ramesey take over command of the drones ?

Or are they loyal only to her ?
Centcomm 16th Jul 2015, 1:20 AM edit delete reply

Nope . they are Bio Code locked to Her only ..
Sheela 16th Jul 2015, 6:09 AM edit delete reply

Interesting, I'm guessing some of the military guys wouldn't like that ... but then, if the situation is dangerous, they could just send a war bot in, instead of the guy with DNA in him, so the chance of loosing the guy with the Bio Code is relatively low.

On a sidenote, does all androids have the same DNA, or are they unique (enough) to be used for a Bio Code Lock ?

TeeDee wants to know! >_<
Centcomm 16th Jul 2015, 6:50 AM edit delete reply

Yes Every Android made in New Troy has a unique DNA and Bio electric field.
Marcus Ramesy 16th Jul 2015, 6:50 AM edit delete reply

Dr. Silver and in all of her infinite wisdom has still yet to figure out how to make a control system that can be used by other people, it seems that the control mechanisms that she employs are near impossible to use, complicated and never works with any of the test pilots (this has been a great point of contention with her work since she was contracted to design weapons systems that can be used by the military) no one can ever control them the way Dr. Silver does
Mark_L_A 16th Jul 2015, 8:50 PM edit delete reply

So she designed their controls around her own Cyberware, and not everyone else's Cyberware matches.

Is that what you are saying Major?
Sheela 17th Jul 2015, 1:10 AM edit delete reply

Heh, so the good doctor made the controls frustratingly hard so it's difficult for the military to use ? Maybe even deliberately so ?

I'm thinking the good Doctor doesn't like that the military taking her babies into war and getting them all beat up. ;)
Marcus Ramesy 17th Jul 2015, 9:07 PM edit delete reply

Dr. Silver has not been able to figure out why others are not able to pilot the drones, the drones check out.. the hardware checks out but the pilots.. the don't check out.... The Dr assures us that she has designed them to be interfaced by milspec cyberware but for some reason no one can interface properly.
