Ooooooohhh Sparkly!!
Sheela 17th Jul 2015, 1:13 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, I particularly liked the purple shroud around the cannons when they shot. :)
Centcomm 17th Jul 2015, 9:35 AM edit delete reply

Yeah the Aura around the PPC emitter is a cherenkov effect and the PPC fires heavy charged particles at the target .. ( also called the Lighting gun .. or Nuke cannon )
T1-G3R2501 17th Jul 2015, 9:44 AM edit delete reply
Ahh charged particle cannons... Always fun.
Makes me miss the days of Zoids. Now those were some tough mechs
anonymous coward 17th Jul 2015, 3:57 PM edit delete reply
Whoa. The only cherenkov frequency I'm familiar with is the blue from an underwater reactor, what's the dielectric medium here?
chk 18th Jul 2015, 9:20 AM edit delete reply

Those are definitely cool effects.
Dragonrider 16th Jul 2015, 9:04 PM edit delete reply

Shiny. You know, the expression "Fire at Will" always feel sorry for that poor guy way too damn many people shooting at him.
anonymous coward 17th Jul 2015, 6:32 AM edit delete reply
Did you see what that jackass did harassing those people? I might not go so far as to say they deserve it, but the world is probably better off without Will.
Centcomm 17th Jul 2015, 9:33 AM edit delete reply

Nah hes a jerk.. * Shoots some more *
Lukkai 17th Jul 2015, 5:35 PM edit delete reply

Pretty sure Picard always was rather specific in his firing orders when both Data and Riker were around. At least at the beginning.
Fairportfan 16th Jul 2015, 9:05 PM edit delete reply

Which one's Will?
Sheela 17th Jul 2015, 1:19 AM edit delete reply

Wait, Will is here ?
velvetsanity 17th Jul 2015, 9:12 AM edit delete reply

Will is the nerdy guy who used to play a certain Marty Stu character on Star Trek

I thought it was that fresh prince guy.
Lukkai 17th Jul 2015, 5:36 PM edit delete reply

illuminating as always Sheela!

Wil Wheaton played Wesley Crusher, the Marty Stu. But everyone else is referring to William Riker the first officer of the Enterprise.
Haegan2005 16th Jul 2015, 9:10 PM edit delete reply

I think these guys are headed for the long fall... :)
That one guy 17th Jul 2015, 2:41 PM edit delete reply
I'd say that depends on how spectacularly their aircraft explode. Ashes can float a long time, especially if they start from high enough up in the atmosphere.
DLKmusic 16th Jul 2015, 9:10 PM edit delete reply

A few strips ago I said "Sopwith Camels trying to dogfight F-15 Tomcats", I was referring to androids (ie Nox is not going to be any kind of match for either Dolly or Ceci)...

I shoulda figured it would apply pretty much to ALL Nova Romas Hardware
StellarJay 16th Jul 2015, 9:23 PM edit delete reply

In a comment made some time ago, Centcomm said that Kali could put a world of hurt on Dolly if they got close enough. While we don't know the fighting capabilities of Nox, we can't suppose that all the Cassians are inferior to the NT adroids' fighting abilities.
f/Noir 16th Jul 2015, 10:53 PM edit delete reply
Well- Nox as the other Cassians are comparable to a Model 3, so mostly consistent of a metal chassis. Dolly is a NT Model 5/Prototype, so there are no big reinforced metal parts in her.

In close range combat, I would expect that Dolly is quite inferior...
Sheela 17th Jul 2015, 1:22 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, Dolly's current chassis isn't specifically a combat chassis.
That said, I doubt she's gonna be a simple knockover either.

And while Nova Roma's hardware may be a bit out of date, they have an awful lot of it. Don't underestimate drekheads army.

Centcomm 17th Jul 2015, 9:14 AM edit delete reply

sorry .. spoilers :D
Centcomm 17th Jul 2015, 9:15 AM edit delete reply

hehe remember Cent is a Military AIS .. she cant HELP but keep things advancing. in the name of science of course. Deck just gave her a reason to put some of her toys to use.

*looks at Marcus and Ceci*
That one guy 17th Jul 2015, 2:50 PM edit delete reply
Dolly was concerned that the Cassians would be potentially formidable. I don't think that she's too worried as long as she gets the jump on them one at a time, but in general I don't think she's overconfident enough to feel certain that one-on-one with them aware and ready for her would be a sure thing.

CeCi, on the other hand, was almost certainly put together by Centcomm based upon her knowledge of what might be expected on Dolly's mission, so it wouldn't surprise me if she's got some nasty anti-android weapons, like strong but tightly contained EMPs, ultrasonic cannons that can liquify a synth brain inside an armored skull (possibly the plasma cannon goes first to burn off some of the fleshy bits to get the armor a bit more easily resonant), various things to hack or destroy a MACCS, etc.

And as per author Centcomm's comment, God (and the authors) only knows what kind of tricks Marcus is equipped with, but he certainly had a lot more available storage space for his toys than Ceci has internally.
Sheela 17th Jul 2015, 3:33 PM edit delete reply

Oh my, Marcus is a toy?
But .. what sort of toy?

And yeah, Centcomm the AIS, is secretly delighted that she gets to test some military hardware out. The better her hardware, the better she can protect New Troy, so there's a silver lining to this mission. :)
Stormwind13 17th Jul 2015, 4:36 PM edit delete reply

Well obviously Marcus is one of those toy SOLDIERS, Sheela! Just a little bigger than most. Oh, and not made of green plastic either. :-D
Lukkai 17th Jul 2015, 5:40 PM edit delete reply

Not only a silver lining, but also a doctor Silver. And she'd probably refer to him as Boytoy, if you asked her that question.
Probably not in his earshot (although...).
Haegan2005 17th Jul 2015, 8:49 PM edit delete reply

Better bug out! You can do better than Mach 3.5? No! Oh well...
Centcomm 17th Jul 2015, 9:36 AM edit delete reply

The poor ships under attack can do at best Mach 2.0 if they push hard..
Sheela 17th Jul 2015, 3:50 PM edit delete reply

Curiously, over the last 40 years, military jets haven't gotten any faster than they used to be.

Fastest military jet to date, was the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, which was a reconnaissance aircraft. It could reach Mach 3.2 for prolonged periods of time.

Second fastest was the MiG-25 Foxbat and the MiG-31 (same engine). they could reach Mach 2.83 for prolonged time, and for a short duration could reach Mach 3.2 as well, though it could damage the engine as it would eventually overheat.

The SR-71 entered production in 1964 and the MiG-25 in 1970. That's 44 years ago!

Appearently, there's a real barrier around mach 2.9 or so, with cooling primarily.
anonymous coward 17th Jul 2015, 4:19 PM edit delete reply
You could always try the rocketry answer of giving up on liquid fuel and just using solid explosives instead. I'm sure that by that time they've mapped out enough nitrogen chemistry to find a good candidate to replace liquid fuel, with electrically ignited explosive grit or something like that. You can do an awful lot to ruggedize your engine when you don't have to suck in air to atomize your go-juice before you use it. Control would probably suffer though, and the noise profile would--if anything--likely go up.
Lukkai 17th Jul 2015, 5:46 PM edit delete reply

You could build combat jets that are faster. It just doesn't make all too much sense. The loss in payload and manoeuvrability, bigger echo and much higher costs both in production and maintenance are a way bigger drawback than the gain from the higher speed.

There's a limit as to with what speed you can reasonably still perform air combat in anyway.
anonymous coward 17th Jul 2015, 10:03 PM edit delete reply
Well, I was talking about the engine and gastank problem: There just isn't enough energy in kerosene or anything else standardly used as jet fuel for pushing a passenger/delivery platform past mach 4 near sea level very far. Normal jet fuel also has that air-intake issue adding a front-drag amd airflow problem for any jet engine. We don't have it yet I don't think, but I expect the eventual development of a controllable solid fuel aerial propulsion system that packs more thrust per mass and volume of fuel. The benefit of an engine that only has an ignition system instead of an ignition system AND an air intake should simplify construction and lower mass/volume of the engine. That should have all sorts of benefits for the design of your airframe.
Lukkai 19th Jul 2015, 10:29 AM edit delete reply

True, anon. Successful developments in that department could revolutionise combat planes. The added possibilities for stealthier planes alone...

Though personally, I wouldn't really expect all that faster planes but better armed ones. And one more thing many forces would want to improve before adding speed: Range.
Mark_L_A 17th Jul 2015, 6:12 PM edit delete reply

Sheela, I have it on the authority of a person who used to be a part of the SR-71 Program, (He won't tell me WHAT he did exactly, but hes is a pilot, an aircraft mechanic, and an aerospace engineer) that the Blackbird can go SIGNIFICANTLY faster than Mach 3.2.

Take into consideration though that NASA and the Airforce have had several major failures with their hypersonic test platforms of delamination of the wing, when using a winged craft, and shockwave disintegration when using lifting bodies, when the speeds get above Mach 4.25. Heat, vibration, and plain old air resistance, become too great at those speeds.

There is SUPPOSEDLY, a new test bed aircraft that just 'barely' breaches Mach 4. However it is unknown if it is a supersonic drone or piloted aircraft.
Sheela 17th Jul 2015, 8:19 PM edit delete reply

The base stats of the SR-71 is no longer top secret, but the burst speed of the Blackbird was never listed, which is what your friend is probably referring to.
But for prolonged speeds, Mach 3.2 is mighty fast indeed.

Remember the MiG-25 Foxbat could only hit those speed for a short while, before overheating. But it was also heavier, and was weaponized, so it had more drag as well.

Still, if it was easy to make jets go over Mach 3, everyone would do it. And noone is doing it anymore, not even the US.

The drones are coming, and those don't need to be fast, if they fly over you like a locust swarm!
Marcus Ramesy 17th Jul 2015, 8:59 PM edit delete reply

Person behind the character: From my experience in the AF and talking with pilots as well.. most of the pilots didn't know how fast the sr-71 could go.. officially they will say mach 4... but they were never able to fully test out because as was mentioned heat.. vibration and resistance.... unofficially.. it fucking fast.
Boren 17th Jul 2015, 10:34 PM edit delete reply
As to the Blackbird let me just say that Mach 3.2 was the fastest OFFICIAL speed it could go, however it's the way its engines work the faster it goes the faster it can go sooo.......
Also the biggest problem with making an aircraft faster is that soft little bit of squishy meat up front. We can build a faster aircraft now if we wanted, the problem is no one would be able to survive the flight.
xpacetrue 18th Jul 2015, 9:36 PM edit delete reply

"...We can build a faster aircraft now if we wanted, the problem is no one would be able to survive the flight."

And that could, in theory, give drones of the future a real edge over human pilots. Electronics can be hardened to survive high G forces. And if you had AI pilots that were as smart as people...
The Old Scribe 16th Jul 2015, 9:34 PM edit delete reply

Thus a routine patrol above Nova Roma becomes a fireworks display followed by a rain of flaming wreckage upon the fair city. I'm sure any retaliatory launches will meet a similar fate. I advise all pilots to remain in the ready room and drink coffee. You have just been rendered obsolete.
Centcomm 17th Jul 2015, 9:35 AM edit delete reply

hehe ouch!
anonymous coward 17th Jul 2015, 4:21 PM edit delete reply
That's what the SAM and AA batteries are for. Targeting might be a problem, though.
Centcomm 19th Jul 2015, 8:59 AM edit delete reply

those items cant hit what they cant lock onto or see..
anonymous coward 19th Jul 2015, 3:11 PM edit delete reply
Area denial, you only have to ping it with enough incidental effect to get a lock, or even just throw enough flak and concussions nearby to damage the system. I know that's hard in three dimensions, and you don't really want to experience the, "What goes up must come down," problem with flak in an urban area, but this is what ultrasonic/concussive effects could be very useful for.
plymayer 16th Jul 2015, 10:50 PM edit delete reply

bye bye
Haegan2005 16th Jul 2015, 11:12 PM edit delete reply

If they are as heavily militarized as Cent and Rose have been implying, they will have a larger CAP up then just 2 craft. However, that does not mean that the rest of the CAP is nearby.

Earlier there was talk of lots of intrusions into their nearest neighbors airspace. Amongst other things.

Unless, of course, they really are not expecting anything and the current CAP is merely a sop to protocol and the +5 pilots are napping in their barracks and are really at +30 or something!

I get the feeling only parts of the military machine is really working.
Sheela 17th Jul 2015, 1:26 AM edit delete reply

Well, poke an ants nest and a lot of ants will come out.

Doctor Silver just poked their defenses.
Centcomm 17th Jul 2015, 9:13 AM edit delete reply

You have it about right.. This was suppose to be JUST another boring shift.
Mark_L_A 17th Jul 2015, 12:32 AM edit delete reply

Ok is one of these the main controller Drone? I know that there can be at times difficulty in trying to control multiple drones, even the US Airforce, will slave several drones to one so the other operators can get some rest, especially for long flights. Are Dr. Taylor's drone slaved to one main drone to free up Dr. Silvers own attention to other matters?
Sheela 17th Jul 2015, 1:28 AM edit delete reply

Well, I'm guessing that if you have one main controller drone, you can leave the other two to use their processing power to do deep scans and detailed analysis of their surroundings.

More bang for your buck. :)
xpacetrue 17th Jul 2015, 1:32 AM edit delete reply

The way this page looks, it seems the middle forward drone is in a leadership position. This makes sense as even among AI they have to coordinate and work together.

But these are 39'th century, top-secret, bleeding edge (prototype) drones built by Dr. Silver for New Troy. They must have military-grade bot brains. Meaning, while they're not sapient or nearly as smart as, say, TeeDee, they're probably way smarter than the computers and AI we have today.

I bet Dr. Silver just has to set mission parameters: Define what are and are not valid targets, and specify a mission area. Example: Eliminate any military aircraft (aside from their own) in a 5 mile radius around the Black Tower, with target priority based on proximity. I'm sure Dr. Silver can override at any point. But unless the situation changes or they do something which threatens their mission, that shouldn't be necessary.
Sheela 17th Jul 2015, 2:19 AM edit delete reply

According to one of Centcomm's comments, they are actually human-level smart, but with no emotions.
Stormwind13 17th Jul 2015, 4:46 AM edit delete reply

Good points, xpace. These aren't the drones we know. WAY more capable.

I think you are right about having programmed parameters; however, right at this moment from the sound of it Dr. Silver is CLOSELY monitoring this opening phase.
Centcomm 17th Jul 2015, 9:12 AM edit delete reply

Each Drone Set has a sub controller who can organize and "think" for the pack. and if that one is killed they automatically pick the next leader and carry on.
xpacetrue 17th Jul 2015, 1:15 AM edit delete reply

All this fighting - the pain, bloodshed, and death - are on Prince Douche-bag's head. However, if you think about it, this probably could have been averted if only Lynn could have been talked out of a direct route to New Sparta in the family vehicle (with an active Net link, no less). Or, if she had taken Dolly along...
Centcomm 17th Jul 2015, 9:10 AM edit delete reply

If Dolly had been with Lynn this whole comic may have been over before it really began. Lynn lands .. Dolly murders everything.. they get back in the car and go to New Sparta.. the end.
Stormwind13 17th Jul 2015, 10:53 AM edit delete reply

If CentComm had done it right none of this would HAVE happened!

Calliope comes in tells her Lynn is flying to New Sparta... ALONE. CentComm shouldn't have argued with her which allowed Calliope to chain her actions down.

Instead CentComm should have acquised immediately! Got away from Calliope (and her directives). Then shuffled the patrols. 4 fighters in front, 4 behind Lynn just patrolling could have stopped the mess.
That one guy 17th Jul 2015, 2:55 PM edit delete reply
The prince seems pretty determined about his plan. Had this attempt been foiled with New Troy thinking it was just random gutters and bad luck, he would've kept trying. With Lynn about to go to college in New Sparta, I'm sure other opportunities would've presented themselves.

It mainly would've been a question of if he succeeded before he got lynched by his own people or not.
Centcomm 19th Jul 2015, 8:58 AM edit delete reply

your correct in the fact he would have kept trying .. he WANTED to grab Calliope .. but she never left the damn tower..

Wow, shiny and sparkly...

Centcomm 17th Jul 2015, 8:30 AM edit delete reply

This particular unlucky Patrol is one tasked with keeping the air space around the palace clear of threats. Marcus wants total air superiority .. and as you will see.. - well you will see.

It's an entirely different, but still menacing, tone when you imagine the drone's voices as the portal turret's. ;D

Hehe ok thats kinda creepy .. im thinking that would be a good voice for the combat orbs .. :D not the Eagles.. ( also known as the Hammer class drones )
velvetsanity 17th Jul 2015, 9:10 AM edit delete reply

Ooh, I like that, Matt. Gives a certain sense of style to it :D

(Just pray that nobody puts Dr. Silver's mind into the body of a robot that controls a highly automated R&D facility...)
anonymous coward 17th Jul 2015, 4:44 PM edit delete reply
What makes you think she hasn't already had her mind in control of a highly automated R&D facility? She had to bash out those drone prototypes somehow, somewhere.
velvetsanity 17th Jul 2015, 6:34 PM edit delete reply

Oh, that's easy, anon. She doesn't continually forcibly put people through "testing" that always results, in the end, in the test subject's death.
anonymous coward 17th Jul 2015, 10:05 PM edit delete reply
I'm pretty sure Doc Silver--as ethically challenged as she may be at times--doesn't compare to Glados.

Centcomm 17th Jul 2015, 8:28 AM edit delete reply

Thats not bad .. They do have a electronic "voice" and while its a "human" voice.. it has no inflection or emotion :D I hadn't decided if they were male or female it probably a option ..
HiFranc 17th Jul 2015, 4:14 PM edit delete reply

Ha ha, yeah .. a lot of the NASCAR drivers have lovely humor.
Same goes for the offroad racers, like the Baja 1000 guys.

Ofcourse, if you tell one of those big trophy truck drivers that you're racing in Class 11, they stare wildly at you and say "Class 11? Man, you're crazy!". :D

That one guy 17th Jul 2015, 3:04 PM edit delete reply
Possibly, but his first order of business is going to be to either protect the girls or work on Decimus' failsafe.

I suspect he trusts Lynn to keep New Troy forces significantly more than he trusts his own ruler. New Troy forces are near certain to pursue an objective he expects using techniques and personnel that he won't fully know. He probably suspects that they will have a way to trace Lynn.

I don't think he can be certain Decimus will be rational enough not to charge New Troy forces naked and flinging his own poop and then get a whole lot of people killed when the failsafe goes off when he gets himself killed. Possibly including something personal at Lynn for all he knows (him not being in the know that Aeneas tinkered with her bracelet, so maybe even if she's outside whatever radius the failsafe has).

All that being the case, I think Decimus is Maxus' larger concern rather than the New Troy forces.
Sheela 17th Jul 2015, 4:04 PM edit delete reply

But, if Lynn gets killed, Calliope will glass his city.

Maybe he needs a backup plan?

anonymous coward 17th Jul 2015, 4:38 PM edit delete reply
Maxus is busy enduring an assassination attempt at the moment. He also has no way of knowing specifically who is attacking without an ID on what's happening and some analysis. A major preoccupation of Nova Roma security has been insurgent activity apparently; Nova Roma regular forces might be tuned for civil suppression duty more than responding to foreign assault. It's a serious question whether Nova Roma has anything left beyond nominal SAM/AA batteries and Decimus' robot hordes available to respond to the drones.

....Maxus may also have officially and explicitly planned to welcome New Troy forces and surrender to them in the hopes that they can get rid of this murderous moron he's been facepalming over.
