Well Silver is actually cheating a bit .. Shes wearing a Barrier shield that has its own fusion pack and the drones are also projecting shields so actually 4 of them are sharing the load across them The NR guys really dont have anything that can punch though that kind of Layered shielding.
remember boys and girls.. barrier shields are the kind that tend to be used on starships. the portable version is toned down a bit.. but it can take a serious beating before having problems..
That puts me in mind of a line from Illegal Aliens by Nick Pollotta and Phil Foglio. A starship with a shield up being attacked by a group of renegade tanks. Went something like, how long can the shield hold against their attack? This level of attack? Said with scorn. Thirty or forty YEARS, depending on if we run the air conditioning or not.
pretty much room to room clearing :D Silver and her pocket army :D
But this shows off exactly why New Troy has a reputation for high tech warfare something the prince might have wanted to consider before poking Cent with a sharp stick.
Considering that Acantha pretty much yelled at Decimus that Centcomm would come knocking with a Drone Army, this is definately something he should be prepared for.
You know, publicly gifting Decimus with a whole bunch of extra pairs of pants for all the pants-crapping she expects he'll need to do when New Troy comes to get Lynn back does seem like her style of smart-ass.
If you haven't read it, sure. Though that comic is done. And doesn't have the comment section this one does. If you liked Luna Star though, you probably would like A Miracle Of Science too.
*blink*
Oh, wait, I think I get this. This is like the game show Jeopardy, the clue is a statement and I have to figure out the question it's answering: How would Decimus respond?
Correct shes the Boss lady of this faculty. and right now shes having a very very bad day. BUT shes not military .. shes a civilian - she handles computers and networks :D
I'm thinking of her as the Disaster Preparedness Coordinator for Nova Roma. Responsible for moving resources around Nova Roma in response to various emergencies.
Right now she gets the joy of that plus tie ins with some of military. At least the Cassians, though it seems to be more information than the ability to order them around. Guess it is so they don't duplicate efforts.
Considering Decimus' habits and reputation, I think "moving resources around Nova Roma in response to various emergencies" probably requires a tie-in to military or police functions (if there's any separation) between 22 & 85 percent of the time.
This location does have military tie ins and yes this location does not have the ability to order cassians around .. Kali is the leader of the cassians and Notcis is her second in command :D
I love her reaction to the news about the Cassian though. The whole exchange, actually.
Now let's just hope she's smart (and lucky?) enough to survive what's coming next. She's looking as good as capable at this point. And while we can always use good looking characters to look at, Nova Roma will also need any capable person they can get in the near future, I think.
And we thank you for that, CentComm. Especially the pretty girls!
Now does the pretty Coordinator have a name and therefore might survive? Or was she left nameless so you won't feel remorse when you turn her into dog food?
I'm guessing that she'll be kept alive long enough for the e-war drones to be grab her voiceprint and other identifying characteristics so that they can convince the New Rome computer systems that the instructions Silver & Co are issuing to the city are valid.
Ah well that makes sense, Hornet. Though I was under the impression they didn't have that many Cassians that they could 'waste' one by putting them into a purely staff position.
Their low numbers is definitly their main weakness.
They would be great in that position too, realtime update from cassians in the field, and being able to realtime update the cassians IN the field too.
That in turn would mean the Cassians that are in the field would be able to turn up at the most opportune places, exploiting situations as they arose.
there are actually not that many cassians - they do missions from the Palace and a few patrol the city looking creepy but the bulk of the work is done by local police and Military
Depending on the conditions, a bi-plane would be pretty dangerous to an F-15 ... they have crazy turning radius, and can fly at very slow speeds, so if they could get inbetween some tight buildings / trees, they could EASILY outmaneuver the F-15.
Catching up to it and shooting it, might be more difficult.
The biplane might not survive the jet wash if the F-15 got near it though. I mean the turbulence might knock it out of the air. If the biplane got any altitude at all, the F-15 could turn it into wreckage. As for the biplane being a threat. The F-15 would be into and out of the range of the biplane's weapons in seconds I think.
I'm not sure it could do much more than dodge and one tiny mistake as fragile as they were... it would be flaming wreckage.
The Swordfish was quite effective against German battleships because their anti-aircraft gunners kept leading too much and could not believe how slow they were going. In the Vietnam, a modified DC3 was more effective against Vietcong positions than jets because they travelled too fast to spot hidden people on the ground.
Whilst it is often advantageous to use modern technology, sometimes old tech works better for a given mission profile.
As was the Skyraider. That was one of the workhorses of Vietnam (though admittedly not a biplane, of course neither was the DC-3). It's ability to loiter in the combat area though was invaluable in search and rescue.
The problem is that the difference in capabilities between a F-15 and even something like the Fiat CR.42 is magnitudes apart. If both pilots are skilled with their aircraft and fly it close to their limits, the biplane should be toast. The F-15 would just run away, turn and come back from a high position to chop it into splinters. It wouldn't dog fight it, just make slashing attacks until several 20mm cannon shells hit and it would be over.
I guess that most of the royal household would not want a cassian in that sort of position because it would get people used to the idea that androids were superior in some way.
Actually they were pretty clear going in to harm as few people as possible. I'm betting the drones know what guns look like. That isn't even that hard now, image recognition is fairly high if you use a 3d model as the compare point. This is much more advanced society that technology is more than likely portable and small and easy to build into a drone. FoF would just be another layer so we see "friends and guns " = ok and "not friend and guns" = target. What I really wonder is if the drones would attack a red soldier without a gun. They plainly have classed red soldiers as combatants if they shoot before being shot. obviously they are not getting though the shield. So if say a red guy with or without a gun is not shooting at them, will he be defenstrated?
Considering that Silver's there coordinating them in person, she could easily have the drones set to fire on anything readying a weapon their way or that sent a projectile at the shields and then just manually direct anything past that. With the shields as they are, they aren't in danger unless you get to the class of weapons most sane people don't use indoors.
She was stated to have more than the usual cyber-enhancement and I think they involved at least some degree of speed step-up over normal human.
This was actually something I had to deal with while reading the archives! I got so absorbed that I was eating and sleeping at weird times. Glad I had some unscheduled vacation days. :-D
There are also some vote buttons, Shirokuro. One for Top Web Comics and another for Comic Basement (down at the bottom). We are trying to get and keep Data Chasers in the top 20. Actually if we can get it into the top 10 we have promises from the creators for interesting things. :-D
I second that. I took a couple of days off after the May Day bank holiday weekend. On the evening of the first of those days I found DC. I remember thinking, "I'll just read a few pages then I'll go to bed." In fact, I thought that several times. Before I knew it, it was getting light.
God, I hope not. Never heard anything good about Comcast.
Looks like a large part of the city is going to be one big biohazard. And ouch, that guy on the left took a hit right through the butt! Not that he felt it, or anything else, about 3 seconds later...
How did Doc get in, anyway, and why is she walking around in places that could be full of landmines, gas sprayers, pneumatic presses and more unconventional attacks?
Dr. Silver's drones shot the guards, and she walked in. Wasn't that hard. :D
Also, it's not often that you find a data center outfitted with landmines, gas sprayers, pneumatic presses, or anything more dangerous than co-workers with poor personal hygiene. She's there to take control of the node and start playing merry hell with the palace's systems.
I can just see a {fixed} Aeneas in the aftermath of Doc Silver's fiddling.... "Really, Veronica? Did you HAVE to reroute the sewage to the central fountain? Was that REALLY necessary?"
It does look like Decimus alternates between imperious overconfidence and hissy-fits of spiteful violence with surprisingly little genuine foresight, it's true. That said, death traps and hardening your fortress with additional security elements just makes sense for the guy who has set up a catastrophe to happen in the event of his death. I mean, he doesn't know who all his curent and future enemies are, or that all of his underlings will remain perfectly loyal; he'll eventually find a use for every possible weapon he can lay hands on.
I've played Evil Genius, and my lair is akin to the guy from SAW being put in charge of a Disneyland renovation.
That being said, if you're a little paranoid you set traps, if you're a lot paranoid you take them all out, because the automatic turrets can get reprogrammed easily enough.
Yes Mark, I did. But it doesn't look like a pattern you would get from a reflection. I wonder if someone (looking at CentComm) will tell us what it is? :-D
However, there's also a HUGE cap in numerical levels ... there's a LOT of redshirts.
TeeDee has a big gun and is in a target rich environment - TeeDee is delighted! :)
Heh, reminds me of a similar situation, where a starship was attacking a borg-like ship, and the borg-like guys decided that they didn't want to waste weapons or materials on them, so they teleported the enemy's starship drive from the back of the ship, to the front of the ship.
Needless to say, it had a rather .. profound effect, on that starship. :D
Also check your inbox :D
Unless, as someone mentioned, that weaponry comes in the form of a Cassian.
Being attacked for 40 years, would leave traces, no matter how weak the attack might be.
Hut-Two-Three-Four,
Kill a guard,
And Blow the door.
PRN (Patient Refill As Necessary)
Keep it up, two, tree, four.
:D
But this shows off exactly why New Troy has a reputation for high tech warfare something the prince might have wanted to consider before poking Cent with a sharp stick.
But then, he just might be, we don't know yet.
And we haven't seen their response to the attack yet.
Lining up your shot to give them less than a second afterward, sure. Just let them finish to get the info.
"I wouldnt be telling you my plan if you had any chance of stopping it .. this happened fifteen min ago.. "
BOOM! Best villain ever!
"No, no we surrender, we surrender."
TAKTAKTAKTAKTAKTAK ... WHOOMPH!
"Room clear!"
"Five by five, Doctor."
also shows just how worried she is. Like .. not at all.
Another comic to binge-read. :)
Like that will stop me from reading it. :D
Kinky.
Also I really like the lighting in the last panel O: that's gorgeous!
Oh man. I can't deal with the suspense!
) damn it I wanna post more pages ....
Oh, wait, I think I get this. This is like the game show Jeopardy, the clue is a statement and I have to figure out the question it's answering: How would Decimus respond?
Now waaiiiiit a minute, Rose is Decimus ?
Heck if I know, my house doesn't have a hall!
Does the red on her badge make her a red-shirt? XD
Is that a map of the city behind her? :)
also yes its a map of the city.

She's totally a kung-fu-dance-coordinator!
She'll have Dr Silver bust out those moves in no time!
Anyway is the head controller lady a Cassian???
They would be great in that position too, realtime update from cassians in the field, and being able to realtime update the cassians IN the field too.
That in turn would mean the Cassians that are in the field would be able to turn up at the most opportune places, exploiting situations as they arose.
cassians are like sending a F-15 after a bi plane
Catching up to it and shooting it, might be more difficult.

.............. *drool*
This was actually something I had to deal with while reading the archives! I got so absorbed that I was eating and sleeping at weird times. Glad I had some unscheduled vacation days. :-D
*sigh* ... why does this keep happening to me ?

Just imagine those beasts on steroids?
Yikes!
Not someone to meet in a dark alley, or a it alley either!
Is that a reflection? Or something else?
(( helpful cent ))
Glad you like the new incentive ! im going to do more like say one a week :D
Meaning, does it also emit for her shields. Or is strictly the conduit for them?
Maybe the impenetrable shields and drones that are casually annihilating their army.
Another great page! :)
However, there's also a HUGE cap in numerical levels ... there's a LOT of redshirts.

Oh that made me laugh SO hard. :-D
Needless to say, it had a rather .. profound effect, on that starship. :D
Kind of like "Air Quotes":
Excellent!
