Artists note on something ... I would say editors Note but thats Rose. ( although she might chime in. )
You will notice all the screens are in English .. now technically they should be in "Roma" But rather than inflict my poor Latin skills on you - im presenting them as "Translated" for the readers. Doc silver is using "Standard" and it looks probably as strange as future Latin.
How many Cassians are there? also hope that Doc locked the doors behind her and left shoot to kill orders with her drones. Kali is probably ready to break down the door.
So far it doesn't sound as if Noctis had many Cassians to spare she could send after the hub Silver bunkered down in.
Nor do we have any sign of her having located her anyway, as of yet.
I would think that without Noctis backing up Nox and being a stabilizing influence, Nox may get carried away. That COULD lead to problem for Dolly and CeCi in addition to Lynn and Acantha.
The Cassians have always been the X Factor in this scenario. It would appear their comm center's cyberarmored more thoroughly than Doc Silver anticipated. I don't think the Cassians have determined that the control center's been compromised, but once they do, they're bound to check it out. It remains to be seen if Doc's drones are up to tackling that combat level of Android.
This is actually the Cassian office also known as Noctis's and Malati's office .. Hrist often comes here too. Other Cassians get there assignments from here..
Noctis is also in charge of cybersecurity. its one of her "bucket of dutys"
Dispite all appearances the Church actually does not have that bad a rep .. a lot of people depend on the Churches advances in Bio medical and Gene repair techniques :D
Setorius has only pulled "Rank" on Decimus once before when he yanked Julia from him as his personal chew toy. and made her a priestess. That annoyed him but he did give him Katya as a replacement.
Something I thought about a while ago when Noctis and Malati were bantering: When she was created, Noctis could have been anyone she wanted to be. So she picked Vulcan.
With that said, I feel for her now. Three of her "sisters" offline during a coordinated attack, and she may have just had to listen to a fourth perish. That pause during her roll call after Malati and Hrist, she's probably assuming Maxus took them out.
...Which leads us to the current situation. Thanks to the prince, this MIGHT be a riot with a good coordinator, it MIGHT be a faction in the city on a power play, it MIGHT be a rescue operation from at least two other cities, or with the timing it could be Maxus hitting the panic button after a bungled attempt at his life. With too many possible aggressors to aim a counterpunch at, they're left at just repelling the attack if they can. While not knowing what parts of the palace guard, military, or otherwise are opposing forces.
Heh, if he was ready to harbour Acantha against the prince's will, he would have to have something to back him up.
I'm thinking the church has a lot of veteran soldiers on their rooster, whom are very happy to the doctors that saved their lives when they were in active duty.
Field Medics make a lot of friends on the battlefields.
Scary, Dangerous friends with big guns.
And the experience on how to use them!
Correct again Sheela .. the Church also has a somewhat middle ground stance. they may argue for one side or the other but they really wont stop anything.
Considering this is Nero the second here too, there's another reason I should have figured on: Setorius supplies all his drugs (recreational and otherwise) for his special rave parties too probably. Can't kill off your supply of nose candy or there's problems when that's what's keeping your special loyal bodyguard loyal.
Oddly enough, recreational drugs are one vice that Prince Decimus doesn't approve of or allow his elites to partake of. Mind-altering or mood-altering substances are not good indulgences for bodyguards. The few that he acquired who already had a taste for drugs have been . . . rehabbed by Setorius. I can guarantee that there's a few blue-armored dudes who cry like babies whenever they have to get an actual legitimate injection or pill for medical purposes; Setorius doesn't just remove the physical addiction, he can make sure you never even WANT to touch the chemical funsies again.
Ehh... At least use Caligula or one on his level, not Nero. I know it's popular belief, but actual facts do make the latter look eccentric, but actually quite decent as far as historic Roman emperors go.
Commodus, yeah. He's the poster boy of the self-absorbed manipulative murderous bastard with no talent to rule an empire. Same goes for Caligula, obviously. Though the latter seems to have been even more unhinged. But you couldn't have shown that in a modern movie, I guess.
Considering Nero started by poisoning his mother when he was 12, Burned down all the homes on the original 7 hills of Rome, (which got blamed on the christians), then commandeered all that real estate to build his new palace, bankrupting the Imperial treasury in the process....
His mother: He was 22 when he had her killed, not 12. And murder in the higher up families, especially among the ruling Caesarian ones, was actually not very uncommon. It's how his mother installed him as her little puppet ruler, for example. An influence from which he then tried and ultimately succeeded to break free.
Not exactly any kind of innocent, that woman. The murder was most likely simply a power struggle, maybe combined with some revenge. I'm not saying it makes him a nice and good fellow. But it does not make him a monster either. And it needs to be seen in the context of those times.
And now the big bucks: The burning of Rome:
First and most important fact: As far as we know, and backed up by historic evidence: NERO DID NOT BURN DOWN ROME.
Also: He was not in Rome when the fire started. And certainly did not play the lyre or anything to the view.
He was in an outside residence in Antium when news reached him. About 50 kilometres away from Rome. He immediately hurried back to the city.
It should be noted at this point that the fire had started in a place that had been the source of several smaller fires already over the last century. That it was not a part Nero would have wanted for his reconstruction and that one of the things that fire destroyed was his palace located near the source, including his much cherished personal arts collection.
The secondary source was again not a place he'd wanted for reconstruction. And in the better parts of the city as well.
One of the first orders he gave after his return, a rather unusual one for a Roman emperor: He opened up his private gardens and property to the public so that the people would have a place to flee from the fire and find refuge and a roof.
He also brought in additional food and made sure the price for crop was lowered, so that those who suffered from the fire may at least be able to buy food.
Afterwards he headed down into the fray and coordinated and led the fire brigades from the front.
When the fire was finally put out, the main changes during the reconstruction that he ordered were a height limit to buildings, wider streets, mandatory stone construction for parts of any building in Rome and a number of other rules that all boiled down to two purposes: Decreasing the fire potential overall and making sure that if one broke out, it would be quickly under control and have no chances of spreading too far until it was.
It is absolutely true though, that he took a lot of ground now unused for himself and built a new palace on it to replace the lost one.
Also true is that practically immediately rumours came up that Nero was responsible for the fire (for different reasons mentioned). Interestingly enough, those voicing that out loud were from political groups and families that were in heavy opposition to him at that time. Mainly noble families and the Senate (which, by the way, made Nero the champion of the common people and very popular among them until the fire).
Other contemporary historians of that time do not mention the rumours, sometimes not even the fire, or are doubting them. Interestingly enough, Christian ones tend to be among the ones not mentioning them at all. We don't have Christian sources placing the blame on Nero until much later.
At that point however the rumours proved to be a big problem for Nero, since they were successfully starting to turn public opinion on him around. So he needed a scapegoat. The Christians seem to have been quite suitable for that. The fact that some of them actually freely confessed of having at least furthered the fires did not help them as well.
Okay, I'll stop at this point and simply mention that Nero certainly was not the best Roman emperor. But he was also very far from being the worst. And while he squandered money and was very eccentric when it came to the arts, he was mostly in conflict with the noble families. Not with the common people, who actually held him in high regards for most of his reign.
Actually, assuming that we are looking at an average of the Cassians fate during this fight, They are looking at large losses already and substantial damage to many of their remaining members.
More interesting is that almost all of their number seem engaged already in the fighting outside, though that could simply be the roving patrols that they maintain to have a presence in the city.
My suspicion is that Doc Silver is safe from the Cassians as it will be hard for them to get a response unit to her anytime soon. More likely the Army will attempt to take the Center back instead. They simply have more boots on the ground and thus more flexibility to respond.
Remember, the Cassians are really there to protect the Prince so will likely have most of their numbers in or around the palace. Anyone elsewhere is on a deliberate mission or predetermined patrol to wave the flag, so to speak.
Let's not forget how New Troy's team seemed to give priority to air superiority. Even if Nova Roma's military or Cassians got their act together and sent a large contingent to take back the Center from Dr. Silver, her large air drones would probably be able to take them out from the air or at least hold them off.
Of course, that assumes her drones are not preoccupied at the time with engaging more aircraft threats.
Silver has a majority of the orbs with her .. the Hammers are scattered and mobile. taking things down as needed. Remember they can cloak
most of her combat drones can.
It's interesting that Noctis instructed two Cassians to take shelter and await further instructions. That is, instead of telling them to take a position somewhere to fight. But then, one of them is damaged and they lack intel. Though, it seems to imply that Noctis is genuinely concerned for their well-being and, right now, may be giving that concern a priority.
well to be fair the Cassians are kind of outcasts in Roma Society .. they are universally hated and feared. They are actually going to take the brunt of this sadly.
The Prince has taken them and turned them into a perversion of what they were. they are now seen as monsters and murderers.
Noctis does, in fact, care about her "little sisters". She knows how much they're hated, and a seriously damaged Cassian could be in danger even from ordinary people, not just the rioters, thanks to the Prince turning them into the boogeyman.
Telling Nisha to take cover and sending Krysanthe to re-arm and protect her, in the absence of intel and organization, is the only logical step in Noctis's mind.
Oh yes .. a crippled Cassian would find herself ripped apart by a angry group of people and left hanging from a light pole .. after being set on fire. it would not be pretty.
Hopefully, the next ruler will be gentler wiht the Cassians, and possibly restore some of their former glory, not to mention some of their sanity.
Poor lost little kittens, they could use it, I think.
.. why are you looking at me like that Dolly?
No Dolly, NO ... you don't have time for those kittens right now!
This is Station Nova Roma voice of the Empire with a spot news report. We currently have the South Gate in view and "sadly" seen a Cassian believed to be Belladonna, attacked and believed to be destroyed. Intercepts of scattered troop transmissions indicate there seems to be an large scale invasion by an unknown force who seem to have control of the Empire Communications Center and who have routed several divisions of Praetorians to the city land fill, sewer system and Imperial Golf Course. In a separate report the sewer system in the Black Palace has backed up causing several swimming pools, spas and baths to overflow from back wash. Film at 6 AM
Too wide for a floppy that I'd expect you to know about, though round optical or other dense media storage is likely. That even older floppy size is capable of accepting round optical media, but the eject function isn't implemented.
I doubt we will ever get to the point that sneakernet isn't an option.
Well the optical disks used in the time of DC ( even in Roma ) are multi Terrabyte devices capable of holding massive amounts of information and programs.
Awww Ya sure it's not a Shugart SA455 for maintaining backward compatibility.... I mean at least it's not a 390. Who knows, there might even be a SA850 somewhere in one of those racks.
I heard SAC-NORAD was still using 'Winchester platters' right up through the turn of the century....
Judging by this page, Id guess most, if not all the Cassians in the field are accounted for. Id also hazard a guess that the Cassian haven't suffered casualties like this in a long time, if ever.
Eight Cassians polled, three offline, one lost transmission/offlined, one damaged/out of ammo..., one in heavily pursuit and redirected..., one heading for Acantha...
=> only one still engaged in battle at the moment
...plus two more in the palace (Noctis and Kali)
=> that makes one out of ten still engaged - that is only 10 % ...
There are more Cassians than that, but Noctis is checking in on the ones who she knows to be actively engaged. We didn't want to spend several pages on the roll call. :D
Plus as far as you've established, the rest is probably somewhere out in the city on patrol or standby. And it's a big city. So calling them back to help might take a while.
I guess we can presume that those are the ones currently available (or not anymore in the case of some) on scene. That about right?
I think its an intentional plot point, but you are supposed to change the credentials before attempting to remove people from the system. Otherwise you leave the ability for someone to get back in on the old creds before you have a chance to block again.
Good point. However, Doc Silver may have run into a different problem.
Along lines of,
"I dont see an authorization entry for the Cassians.. why not??/ ... . . Because they're .. HARD-CODED IN?? OH #$@!"
Auths and Permissions are indeed hard coded. but there are ways of cutting them out of the loop ..
At Just_IDD
Nither me or Rose are coders and programmers .. any "mistakes" are just things we dont know. Doctor Silver DOES know what shes doing and would not make simple errors like that.
Dammit Jim - We are story-tellers not computer programmers !! ^_^
"Oh, your permissions are hard coded... via an expansion card plugged in here over (techy speak desendant of PCIe)... Hmm, would be a *shame* if that server suddenly had a driver problem...."
I find that the fastest way to ruin security's access to a server is thermite.
Alternity rounds, me as the combat spec (again). Our hacker starts yelling over his mic "I can't get him out! He's turning on the automated security all over the place and I can't stop him!" and I respond with "I'll get him out. Unjack." and then apply a liberal does of thermite grenade to the server room.
Doctor Silver: "Hmm... Let's see... First, I make it look like Aeneas is behind the attack. Then, order all the Cassians to go radio silent and secure Aeneas. That should keep them away from Lynn and the rescue party."
and yes Noctis can issue directives to other Cassians per her rank. although there is a diffrence in " Directive: Command " and " this is your directive for this mission "
The first one is listened to by the inhibitor system and MACC's ( if its coded that way )
The second one is just words..
Most New Troy Andriods wouldnt listen to a directive code and they could just laugh it off .. HOwever the "TERM" is still used a lot when Andriods are talking .. it means " this is important LISTEN!"
when you hover over your name and it shows the link back to the comic rather than the CF - it says something like " username=soandso " and they generally have a picture avatar.
guests appear without a pic avatar and when you hover over the name it just as has the link to the comic :D
I don't mind guest commenters - although some of the more negative comments do come in via guest commenting .. some web comics turn off guest commenting Im gonna leave it on for several reasons :D
I am just sad Nova Roma security. Your civilian dispatch is connected to your hard security. Those should be isolated systems that require direct physical access to modify.
Some degree of oddities with current Nova Roma infrastructure should be expected. It would've been built around Aeneas taking care of everything before Decimus' grandfather's revolt. They would've had to retrofit new systems in place to separate them from Aeneas but they may not have had the ability in all areas, some knowledge may have been lost but additionally Aeneas is still functioning and providing some critical services as I recall. So their systems would be ones with odd design constraints, and you never know where they might overlook security due to assumption that Aeneas would protect that part (such as hacking of critical systems, I believe it was mentioned that no human has hacked an AIS without it being shut down in under a second and the AIS have a general truce with each other).
your correct in a lot of things here .. there are parts of Aeneas that are cut off and functioning without higher brain functions like taking a kidney out and using it to filter water .. or using a eye as a camera .. the parts work but Aeneas isnt connected to them.
and in living history no one knows of anyone able to hack A AIS with just human brain power. they are just too alien and too fast.
Before the apocalypse, where would the real life locations of New Rome, New Tory and New Sparta be? Are they in America, or overseas? 'Cause I see that Japanese [Or is that Korean? OR Chinese. I can never tell them apart... .................... THE WORDS, NOT THE PEOPLE!] text there, so it got me thinking.
Also, STOP LEAVING US WONDERING, DAMMIT! IS KALI A DOUBLE AGENT OR NOT?! YOU'RE KILLIN' ME! ;-;
Well, I guess your question is already (mostly) answered in the Tech page - you just need to scroll down to the map (located at the bottom of the page)
oops sorry spoilers :D .. Kali is most assuredly with the Prince right now :D So no fear of her knocking on Silvers door :D
Nor do we have any sign of her having located her anyway, as of yet.
I find it interesting that there appears to be Chinese (or is it Japanese?) characters on Noctis' screen, right above the "Emergency!"
Look, I think there's a few bricks still upright over there! Half a wall, at least... Oh wait, it just fell down... :(
Nova Roma Centurion : *Looks down at armor * Aww hell..

Healers usually are well liked.
But they still meddle in affairs, don't they? :)
Impotent Decimus! Betcha he hates that.

Yeah, Nero was a winner all right.
His mother: He was 22 when he had her killed, not 12. And murder in the higher up families, especially among the ruling Caesarian ones, was actually not very uncommon. No Dolly, NO ... you don't have time for those kittens right now!
surprised by Cassian complexity
or is she sensing

She loves androids after all. :)

I've never hated a Canadian more than him, then.
Except Stephen Harper.
And New Rome is... I wanna say in the areas of either DC, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, or New York.
New Troy, no idea, because I have almost no geographical awareness with regards America, besides the greater west and east coasts.
Nova Roma Is up in Canada on the island of Prince Albert sound.
Now, is the island NOW called Prince Douchimus Island? I could see him renaming it for himself.
