Hmmm, a guest character from a strip I've never seen before. She seems like a sweet little thing and that 'Southerin' accent is priceless. She sure seems harmless and what's that Damnatio Memoriae outfit she belongs to? Is that Nova Roma's version of the USO?
Rose can answer that one but they are a rebel group that uses vid characters and old books and such to hide there identity taking on names and persona from the past
Visiting my in-laws in Missouri has taught me that the accent can range from "perfectly coherent" to "NASCAR" over a ten-mile radius. The dialect varies so wildly across the entirety of the southeastern USA that I feel secure in stating this is at least as much a "Southern accent" as the next drawl. :D
I'm from Missouri originally and I've been told my accent shifts from Suthin, to New Yohk to Cockney, French and everything in between. I actually had people thinking I was from Australia for a few days.
Put me the family farm in Arkansas though, and after 2 days you can't tell I was from anywhere else BUT there.
That shifting thing is not exclusive to US-English at all, I can tell you.
Put me in any part of the German speaking portion of Switzerland and I'll start picking up the local accent within days. And when at home, I actually tend to mix up accents of any of those parts I've visited over the last few months. With some words stuck permanently in my speaking pattern.
Accent can be location/mood dependent. I'm from Ohio and I don't have any trace of Southern accent normally and none of my family does either, but for some reason when I walk into an auto parts store and have to ask someone something, I start to pick up a bit of a twang. Not conscious, don't have the slightest clue why, but it happens relatively often. I'm not sure how much I notice that happening with other family members or people in the area, but I don't think I'm the only one.
Sheela, I literally cannot think of another way to describe the accent demonstrated by one of the family friends. He's clearly a really nice and intelligent guy, but I've met him on three occasions and I don't think I've understood more than ten words he's ever spoken in my hearing. I think it's a combination of the accent and the fact that he talks really, really fast. :D
As a Yankee I don't mean any disrespect, sir, but I can say that I've often spoken to southern folks on the phone in the course of my job. Along with being (usually) very polite, sometimes they do indeed speak with that sort of drawl. Only sometimes, though :)
As for the page itself: Tense and funny at the same time. Oh, and "decaf is evil!" I bet Doc Silver would agree ;)
Which is a good reason to make them not-sentient. Otherwise every so often odd connections would get made and a death bot would float up to Doc Silver with a sad look in its sensors and state that it doesn't want to be a death bot any more, it wants to be a hug bot, but it doesn't even have arms.
And over the next several hours, Doc Silver encounters another person from the webcomic multiverse every time someone in that room says "secure." (shhhhwshhhh!)
About twenty minutes in to the parade of personae, she realizes that no assault on the data center was required, and she could have simply walked in, sat down at a console, and performed her mission with all the danger of a library visit.
Ahem...
So, we have someone that might be a member of the local underground. Conveniently absent from the room while the fireworks went off, carrying a bag of stuff, and showing up during the mission critical bit. I wonder if "Kath" sent out a message to her people that everyone in an important place should take a fifteen minute break starting at 3:50...
Why do I have a terrible feeling that this is going to turn into some kind of meme/in-joke specific to this comic? Any time anyone says the word "secure", some smartass is gonna immediately reply with "shhhhwshhhh"...
It came close. Try it this way, instead. "you can be quite secure in /expecting/knowing/etc./ that this will happen...". I appreciated the joke just like it came through, though :)
Daaaang, in panel two Silver looks kinda vampiric. Also, this lady sounds kinda drunk if she's wandering around a city that just had a loud explosion like that without sounding too concerned. Is this a comedic bridge in between dramatic acts?
yes. its meant to be slightly serious funny .. and a bit of black humor.. also the palace explosion was only a dull boom like thunder to by the time it got to the hub and less so in the sub basement
OK didn't move to the correct date on CF. Have a feeling Doc Silver would rather shoot first and to hell with the questions, I fully approve in her situation no one from NR side should enter with loudly giving positive IFF first.
She REALLY will be unhappy if the channel to Marcus is still open. He would NEVER let her live it down.
I dunaw think that (secure) means what you think it means, Doctor. :-D Secure should mean that unauthorized people aren't walking in on you!
Actually those were a peace offering for her fellow employees; however, currently they aren't in any condition to enjoy them right now. :-D So Dr. Silver might partake of them. :-)
I'm still expecting the night janitor with a mop and bucket.
(My most extreme Emergency Room experience was coming through the locked back entrance (housekeeping had keys) with the floor cart only to marvel at all the cops and people handcuffed to gurneys staring at me. I left quickly)
Just curious, where did the bag she was holding go? As high strung as Sliver and her deathbots are I'd think if she dropped it they would have ventilated her or the bag at least. Definitely would scan the bag, but then I'm just paranoid like that. lol
If she set it down right at the door where she originally stopped, then moved a step or two as Silver indicated and we see her in the later panel, the bag would now be just about right behind her and not visible to us.
I got to see this page a bit before it's completion, and still loving it.
This was such an awesome thing to see Charlotte cameo in another comic and in such a unique way. Her Southern accent is bit 'stronger' than it is in my actually comic, but I'm not gonna hate on it. XD
Just awesome work. And the appearance fell right on my birthday, too.
I really like this page! It's a nice pause to all the epic action that's been taking place (which is equally awesome to read) and offers a chance to reflect on the magnitude of everything that is currently happening. :)
You might want to develop your concept of what is and isn't probable. Consider: How many people are in Nova Roma? How many of them are emergency responders? How many emergency responders are right next to this office ready to counterattack in less than ten minutes notice at damn four in the morning? Most people who are gonna show up at this office around this time are people who have normal reasons to be there, like pizza delivery and the folks who work there.
This is one of the major reasons for rule 19 of Murphy's Laws of Combat. "When you've secured the area, don't forget to tell the enemy."
I got the impression that they were doing noisy obvious things at the palace. The network hub is intended as stealth. The people who'll notice the network hub misbehaving are primarily at the palace with attempts at their comms being shut off to request backup to inspect the network hub (not clear if any military comm other than the Cassian-to-Cassian comms are working).
So I think AC's general comment is more likely to cover Silver's situation. On the other hand, there are always outliers or people who forgot things, so it's not impossible for an active hostile to end up taking notice.
there aren't any sirens going off at the HUB silver has already killed all that. as well as emergency Klaxons at the palace. shes also making sure emergency services and EMS are working fine.
How about we just push your power button.
Don't worry, Doc Silver, she'll just quietly sit in a corner and play Ms. Pac Man
the name means " The Unremembered "

He said, "Remember, profanity wants to be at least seven syllables."

Not the adult version.
I think Silver would actually have a stroke if it did the latter.

(Dang, that one just doesn't work as smoothly in English as it does in German.)

Thank you, Centcomm!
Glad you like it ,. thanks for letting Charlotte show up :D
PS - Happy B day!
Seriously, I love it.
And thanks to you as well! XD
fits right in. :-)
...wow, she really looks good there...
I was thinking stormtroopers, soldiers... panzerhunds I don't friggin' know. But not someone with groceries.

By now, most civilians should be getting themselves out of the open and in to places as far from the fighting as they could get.

from the fog of war...
