I know Acantha's pose in the first panel looks a bit weird but its a modified weaver stance. :/ I did the best I could to replicate it. also THIS is the move Democleus uses on the bucket head.

Mark_L_A 20th Aug 2015, 9:04 PM edit delete reply

Acantha hasn't let up on the trigger yet. I think his adaptive shielding is soon going to overload.

Also Democlus' shot went somewhere. I wonder just what he actually did target and if it might come back to harm the Bluebs even more.
Centcomm 20th Aug 2015, 9:10 PM edit delete reply

I can say this much the Shot hit the wall .. :D
Mark_L_A 20th Aug 2015, 9:13 PM edit delete reply

Can I ask a small favor on firing stances?

Please don't use the teacup and saucer method.

Acantha's weak hand should be grasping her strong firing hand with the fingers forward, not down and under.
Centcomm 20th Aug 2015, 9:15 PM edit delete reply

Actually it was a technical concession on my part .. her hand and wrist did NOT like the other one at all.
Mark_L_A 20th Aug 2015, 9:21 PM edit delete reply

Ok, I understand how, it's a DAZ issue. In the DAZ froums there was a guy who did a pose for firearms that he was giving away free. I don't know if I bookmarked it, but I'll look for it and if I see it, I'll send you the link.
Centcomm 20th Aug 2015, 9:28 PM edit delete reply

Okay.. I could have done it .. i I just couldn't fit her hand around the gun. without making it look stupid. due to the way the thumb and wrist are rigged
Mark_L_A 20th Aug 2015, 9:50 PM edit delete reply

Yeah a DAZ problem with the model.
Mr Bill 21st Aug 2015, 8:30 AM edit delete reply
However, the type of weapon she is using might not have a strong recoil. That might change the optimal shooting stance.
(Caveat: I know extremely little about actual shooting).
Centcomm 21st Aug 2015, 1:27 PM edit delete reply

Actually Acantha's pistol has NO recoil at all.. it doesn't use kinetic energy to kill its target. it just burns though it.
Songgu Kwon 24th Aug 2015, 12:56 PM edit delete reply

Cup & saucer grip may not help control recoil but it does help keep your aim stable. I think we can all agree that it'll work fine with a recoil-less pistol. ;)
Lukkai 21st Aug 2015, 8:17 PM edit delete reply

Gotta say though that I see that hand position on shooting ranges rather regularily. And sometimes even used for adequate accuracy, whereas I've had them try the other way and they were clearly less successful.

So it can work at least for people not shooting all that often.
(Me, I'm down to using one hand only anyway for a while now. Regardless of the pistol's calibre. I've grown so used to it from shooting with my sports and air pistol, I just wasn't really able to comfortably do the transition to two hands anymore.)
That one guy 22nd Aug 2015, 8:44 AM edit delete reply
I've used that hand position for a revolver and it seems to work ok, but it'd feel weird to try using that with anything that has a magazine.
Mark_L_A 23rd Aug 2015, 10:20 AM edit delete reply

I was in Law Enforcement for over 10 years, 2 years in the Army Reserves, plus I've been shooting for over 40 years. The last time I used the cup and saucer method was back in the early 80's. I was taught WHY it's not a good grip to use. And I prefer my revolvers for the most part, but I do have several semi's. And I use a Modified Weaver/Isosceles stance and two hand thumbs forward grip as shown in the picture I linked to above.

If it works for Jerry Miculek, it'll work for me.
xpacetrue 21st Aug 2015, 3:59 AM edit delete reply

This talk about Democlus' shot going somewhere has me thinking:

Where did that shot go? I mean, that was a powerful energy weapon designed to penetrate armor, right? What happens when it hits the wall? Does it go right through and hit something - or someone - on the other side?

I guess the question is: Are the walls of the Black Palace armored to stop energy beams? Or is there the potential for stray beams to hit innocents?
Pirtnac 21st Aug 2015, 1:20 PM edit delete reply
Reminds me of a nice little bit of dialogue from mass effect:
Centcomm 21st Aug 2015, 1:26 PM edit delete reply

what Mass effect game was that! Ive played all three and dont remember that line :D

Mass Effect 2, first room when arriving at Citadel it was. Fun thing

Things a pistol can be used for: Distraction.
Haegan2005 20th Aug 2015, 9:06 PM edit delete reply

I would say that this is going well for the girls so far!

That is a nice pistol Acantha is packing! Seemed to scare the crap out of the guard who was shot. Makes me wonder just what she fired?
Centcomm 20th Aug 2015, 9:11 PM edit delete reply

HAH she has no clue other than it packs more punch than a pistol that size should.
Sheela 21st Aug 2015, 5:54 AM edit delete reply

Well, it *Was* modified by Aeneas himself.
He even mentioned that the battery was a tricky little so-and-so to make, so it's probably not gonna run out of juice for a while. :)
CptKerion 22nd Aug 2015, 4:31 PM edit delete reply
did you not say above that the shot hit the wall, cent? If so, I think, based on my knowledge of the armor and the shielding, that must be one powerful little bugger.
Pirtnac 20th Aug 2015, 9:07 PM edit delete reply
Acantha is two for two. No fuss, no muss. Just straight to the middle and down they go. One downside however: This is either Acantha's first kill, or we get to be creeped out by the knowledge that it isn't.

Oh, and blueberries? Don't pull out guns and then tell your targets you can't USE them... "Stop! Or I'll say stop again!" At least Lynn and Arianna can now be armed if they so choose.
Mark_L_A 20th Aug 2015, 9:10 PM edit delete reply

Problem with that. While Lynn might have some training, Arianna as a slave would be put to death if she used a weapon without permission. Depending on how Nova Roma Laws are, she could be put to death for even just touching one.
Centcomm 20th Aug 2015, 9:14 PM edit delete reply

IF Arianna was caught with a weapon she wasn't authorized for .. yes She would be punished harshly. She would only be killed if she DID something with it.
chk 21st Aug 2015, 8:59 AM edit delete reply

I think law and order are down the toilet at this point.
Lukkai 21st Aug 2015, 8:20 PM edit delete reply

Question: Does Acantha have the authority to authorize Arianna for a weapon? Or would that have to be double checked with Maxus as her owner?
Fairportfan 20th Aug 2015, 9:19 PM edit delete reply

I'd say she's already for the death penalty just for being with the girls at this point.

Ever see the cartoon of the mouse caught in the open giving the hawk the finger ... or the frog with its head in the stork's beak trying to strangle the stork?

Or, as Tommy Monahan's friend Ringo said in DC's Hitman comic: "When they send you to hell - take some dogs with you."
Mark_L_A 20th Aug 2015, 9:23 PM edit delete reply

Or as one of my sayings

Go for the checkmate even if it kills you.
Sheela 21st Aug 2015, 5:59 AM edit delete reply

Naw, if you're caught in a chessgame, dress up as a green queen, and weird all the other pieces out, then run away while singing in the rain.
velvetsanity 21st Aug 2015, 2:08 PM edit delete reply

Who's to say that Maxus hadn't previously authorized her for it and given her training, just in case?
Centcomm 21st Aug 2015, 7:03 PM edit delete reply

No one thought she might need a weapon today.. :P
Sheela 21st Aug 2015, 7:51 PM edit delete reply

Maxus dressed up as a green queen ?

Neat! :)
velvetsanity 21st Aug 2015, 8:00 PM edit delete reply

Maybe not today, but what about tomorrow or next week or even next month or year :D

Knowing Maxus, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if she at least has training
Sheela 22nd Aug 2015, 4:08 AM edit delete reply

Considering how militaristic Nova Roma is, I have no doubt that all the royals have at LEAST basic combat training, and probably some advanced stuff too.
velvetsanity 22nd Aug 2015, 4:38 AM edit delete reply

I'm talking about Arianna, Sheela
Sheela 22nd Aug 2015, 3:22 PM edit delete reply

Oh, right.
Well, considering she's one of Maxus' slaves, she just might have some combat training .. though it would most likely be hand to hand.
Mark_L_A 23rd Aug 2015, 10:25 AM edit delete reply

Probably self defense hand to hand, breaking holds and escape types moves not full bore take it to an enemy and destroy him from the ground up type stuff.

After all, she is a woman, she has a medical condition, she is physically weaker than those over testoeroned mental midgets who might want to harass or molest a slave, any slave. And Maxus wouldn't want her unprepared for breaking a hold and getting away without getting injured herself.
Stormwind13 23rd Aug 2015, 3:17 PM edit delete reply

You forgot the most important one, Mark. Arianna is under Maxus' protection! She doesn't need to know how to destroy anyone, because Maxus will do it for her! Anyone messing with his 'slave' (valued employee) is going to have to face an ANGRY Maxus. Of course, if the Blueboys think he's dead, she is in grave danger. Rape and murder would be the BEST she could hope for. :-7
jamie59 20th Aug 2015, 9:08 PM edit delete reply

That's going to leave a mark. One down.

Is one advantage of a power sword that he doesn't have to worry about it getting stuck after a stab through the joint like that?

Correct easy in .. easy out. just like it was butter :D
HiFranc 20th Aug 2015, 10:41 PM edit delete reply

I think Acantha got the second one in the last panel.
Sheela 21st Aug 2015, 6:00 AM edit delete reply

She's hit him twice, but I don't think he's quite down yet ... but weakened, maybe.
Centcomm 21st Aug 2015, 1:23 PM edit delete reply

The Adaptive shielding is cutting a lot of the beams power. in this case thats bad - each shot is more cut down each time as it find the exact wave to block it.
Lukkai 21st Aug 2015, 8:22 PM edit delete reply

Yet at the moment, his attention is still nicely fixated on her. And not on what's happening right next to him.
Dragonrider 20th Aug 2015, 9:21 PM edit delete reply

I would say interesting times abound, hope that pistol has a very heavy duty power pack.
Haegan2005 20th Aug 2015, 9:24 PM edit delete reply

I seem to recall its power pack gave the AI fits when he was trying to reduce it in size.
Mark_L_A 20th Aug 2015, 9:27 PM edit delete reply

Especially as he was trying to make it hard to detect as well.
Sheela 21st Aug 2015, 6:01 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, I don't think Aeneas' pistol will run out of juice any time soon.

Besides, it should be good for at least 10-20 shots, even if it wasn't an Aeneas-gun.
Centcomm 21st Aug 2015, 1:23 PM edit delete reply

Lets just say she does not have to worry about reloading.. :D
Sheela 22nd Aug 2015, 4:36 AM edit delete reply

Heh, and it's probably a smart gun as well.
And it would have a ... unique personality, wouldn't it?

*after long drawn out fight*

Acantha : "Gun!"
Gun : "Ready for orders."
Acantha : "Battery status."
Gun : "Battery is full."
Acantha : "That's impossible."
Gun : "Pfft, using the gun at such low power settings won't dicharge the battery in any meaningful way."
Acantha : ".. what the?"
Gun : "I repeat, battery full."
Gun : "And could we please up the power setting a bit, I'm bored!"
Acantha : "Uhh ..I don't think .."
Lynn : "HAH, Aeneas gave you a sassy gun!"
Acantha : "Lynn!"
Lynn : "Can it shoot sass?"
Acantha : "No Lynn, guns cannot do that!"
Gun : "Well, I don't know about OTHER guns .... but .."
Lynn : "I like it!"
Acantha : "Shut up!"
Gun : "Oh riight, now it's the gun's fault, isn't it?"
Acantha : "Arrgh, whoever invented smart guns should be crucified."
Gun : "They put him in a mausoleum, you know?"
Acantha : "I can't deal with this shit right now!"
Gun : "Hrm, well, why not just point me at the bad guys then ?"
Gun : "And maybe, just mayybe, up the power a little?"
Acantha : "I .. I ... OK, I guess we should up the power a bit."
Lynn : "Oh shit, that's a rail gun tank Acantha!"
Gun : "Oh look, something to shoot at!"
Acantha : "No way we can even scratch that thing."
Gun : "HEY, I object to that, I can totally penetrate it, easy peasy."
Acantha : ".. you can?"
Gun : "Sure, you just have to raise the power level enough, like say to level fi.."
Acantha : "MAX POWER"
Gun : ".. wait what? NO!"
Gun : "Cancel that!"
Acantha : "MAX POWER"
Gun : " .. that's not .."
Acantha : "MAX POWER"
Gun : " .. such a .."
Acantha : "MAX POWER"
Gun : ".. good idea!
Acantha : "FIRE!!!"

Acantha : " .. wha .. what happened?"
Lynn : "I think you melted the tank, and the troops ... and half of that building over there!"
Acantha : ".. WHAT??!"
Gun : "*whew* ... that felt good."
Gun : "Can we do that again?"
Demooclus : "NO!"
Acantha : "NO!"
Arianna : "NO!"
Lynn : "NO!"
Gun : "Aw."

That one guy 22nd Aug 2015, 8:53 AM edit delete reply
Only problem with the dialog is Aeneas would've made the gun more prone to singing.

I know my department issued pistol can fire 25 times on full power or I can use the low setting for 40 stun shots before I need to change the E-cell.

However not everyone on the force is issued the dual setting pistols, only those of us on priority details.

Sometimes you are in an area where a full power shot can destroy things or people that we just can't risk. And even a stun shot can damage some types of electronics so we are trained to be very careful with our targeting.

My back up gun is an 8mm Luna Arms Company Pulse Pistol. It's only 10 shots, but it's small enough to fit under my uniform shirt without making a bulge. And any gun is better than no gun in a firefight.
The Old Scribe 20th Aug 2015, 9:23 PM edit delete reply

Nice move, Demo. It reminds me of Captain America's 'combat gymnastic' moves so gracefully rendered by Jack 'King' Kirby during Marvel's Golden Age.

It also appears that the princess has more range time than her bro. That's a neat little sidearm. Are those plasma bolts?
Centcomm 20th Aug 2015, 9:29 PM edit delete reply

Decimus is more than likely better than Acantha by virtue of ages. And hes able to practice MUCH more than she is.

Its actually a confined laser and neutron beam also called a "fusion shot"
Haegan2005 20th Aug 2015, 10:11 PM edit delete reply

That would be a lot of energy transfer when it hit something.
HiFranc 20th Aug 2015, 10:51 PM edit delete reply

I can't see Decimus letting Acantha becoming better than him. I'm sure that, if she had tried to get the experience necessary to overcome the age difference, he would have found a way to negate that.
xpacetrue 21st Aug 2015, 3:52 AM edit delete reply

I would think that "fusion shot" would be a more appropriate nickname for a plasma-based weapon. Lasers are coherent and focused beams of light, while fusion reactors work with superheated plasma. Just say'n...
Sheela 21st Aug 2015, 6:03 AM edit delete reply

As I understood it, Decimus was far the better shot, not just in the family, but in all of Nova Roma. There might be one or two out there that can outshoot him, but probably not by much.

It one of the skills that he has earned the hard way.
Centcomm 21st Aug 2015, 1:22 PM edit delete reply

yes Decimus IS the better shot hands down.. But Acantha isnt a total noob :D

If there was any "let's work this out" in me with these two guys, it's not there anymore. would somebody please kick that asshole in the nuts so hard that he pees out his left ear?
Dragonrider 21st Aug 2015, 1:41 AM edit delete reply

Way way to gentle
HiFranc 21st Aug 2015, 3:14 AM edit delete reply

I never thought that there would be a "let's work this out" chance. After all, only those who *enjoy* carrying out Decimus's orders get to wear the blue uniforms.

{edit} The more I read it the more I realise that these guys are disappointed that they are not allowed to shoot Acantha or Lynn.

Democlus misses his first shot substantially to distract the enemy into heckling? That's advanced psych-out, to a degree I'd call headfuckery if it weren't unecessarily rude. I guess I'll just have to call it cracker social engineering instead (in reference to how crackers use social engineering to get people to load worms into their computers from spam and websites).
Tokyo Rose 21st Aug 2015, 2:56 AM edit delete reply

Any dipshit who stands there with a rifle in his hands going "neener neener ya missed me" to the guy who's approaching him with a melee weapon ready has essentially asked the universe to shank him.

And shanked he was !

Ofcourse, this has happened before, when a certain idiot opened a container containing a murderturd.
And we all know how THAT went. :)

Rather prolific use of colorful metaphors! This choice use of profanity reminds me of TR when she's upset. (I think I can guess who wrote the dialog for this page. ^_^)
Stormwind13 21st Aug 2015, 4:48 AM edit delete reply

Actually xpace, Rose writes most of the dialogue. And adds the fonts/colors to help convey emotions.

So once again I'll say thank you for your hard work, Rose. Enjoying the dialogue, makes the action seem more real. Some of it might be internalized in the 'real' world, but that feels like what people would think or say.

Thats always the trade off in a comic.. comic characters tend to talk more to themselves out loud and really its for the reader .. :D its not something they would ever do in real life.

That's what thought bubbles are for :P
Stormwind13 22nd Aug 2015, 6:26 AM edit delete reply

That can work, velvet. Except that other characters can't respond to thought bubbles (unless everyone is telepathic). So the conversations run out pretty quickly. By vocalizing it, gives Rose more chances to get a banter volley going. And that is a GOOD thing, in my opinion. :-)

That particular stroke was the 'mercy strike' for defeated gladiators if they got the 'thumbs down', pull the head back and drive the blade in.

It's also, as shown here and as portrayed in the movie, particularly nasty combat strike for a blade long enough to do it with, like a gladius, dirk, stiletto or other longish knife, the blade only needs to be six or maybe eight inches to hit the aorta.

With a vertical or close to vertical strike, the space between the collarbone and neck guides the blade directly to the heart with virtually no chance of missing or getting stuck since it slides behind the ribcage and there's nothing in the way to bind it.

Sidney and Rose. Are they copying off each other or is it that kind of rivalry that just continues bringing them up to new heights? ;)
Stormwind13 22nd Aug 2015, 6:33 AM edit delete reply

No rivalry. They aren't doing it to impress each other, I don't think. Sydney does it because she feels the frustrated or in pain. Rose does it to capture someone's attention before roasting them over a slow fire for making her get OUT that language.

Plus I don't know if DaveB knows that Tokyo Rose exists. I don't think he does. He doesn't seem properly TERRIFIED, like people that know she exists are. :-D
That one guy 22nd Aug 2015, 9:05 AM edit delete reply
Rose goes for smaller doses of profanity sprinkled all over the place. When Sydney gets pissed off she just carpetbombs until she runs out of breath.

As mook #2 is concentrating on Acantha (who may or may not be a threat but is definitely one he can't fire at), he's forgetting the rule always cover your wingman.
xpacetrue 21st Aug 2015, 11:01 AM edit delete reply

Maybe they're cocky and underestimating their opponents? I'd imagine Douchebag's elite have more experience with acting like a death squad and beating up civies than fighting soldiers.

Then again, they're the antagonist's minions. As such, they're fulfilling their role (i.e., trope) by being rather incompetent. IMO, that's better than them being entirely competent as I kind of like Democlus. And I'd rather not see Acantha and/or Lynn get hurt (again).

Villains do help make a good story. Though, there are some good stories without that. Some Star Trek episodes don't have an obvious villain, for example.

Mook #2 can't move due to the intense pain he's in. Shields are great at keeping things out, this also means that they are great at keeping things in. So when the internal temperature exceeds that of molten metal there unfortunately is no place for it to go.

Don't worry, once she shoots enough that his armour is warmed up to incandescent it should eventually be outputting as much radiant energy as she's shooting at him.
Of course, once that happens the designated target for gratuitous violence mook inside that armour will more likely resemble a mixture of char and barbecued meat than a functioning storm trooper, but hey... that's just more cannibal barbecue left over for the rest of the mooks to enjoy.

Possible Solution for the Problem of explaining how power blades work:

The Blade creates a special resonance field which changes the quantum spin of all electrons in the effected area to up. Electron pairs are all broken up, and some electrons from higher energy orbitals get ejected from the atoms. Without shared electron pairs, covalent bonds break apart. With nearly a third of their electrons missing, All atoms become positively charged, thereby disrupting ionic bonds and causing any formerly cohesive matter to fly apart in a way that looks like it's evaporating/sublimating really quickly. All the ejected electrons ionize air surrounding the field until the positively charged atoms they came from exit the field. Once that happens, the natural electric forces take over and the electrons arc their way back, causing a sparky effect.

Is that a satisfactory explanation?

another explanation could be that it is a deflection shield of some variety using two opposing forces to shred things in a fashion more akin to splitting than push and pull. (kinda like a shear field, but more precise and close ranged and pushing outwards rather than pulling at one part and pushing forward at the other.)
Though from the action I've seen with it, I'd say Rms2000's explanation may be more likely.

In Deus Ex there was this kickass sword, officially designated as Non-Eutactic Blade, dubbed "Dragon Tooth" by Triads of Hong Kong. Let me quote Wikia on how it works "blade itself is non-eutactic and made of pure nanomechanical machines. VersaLife inserted iron rods into the carbon framework of the nanites (electromagnetically manipulated microscopic scanners, cleaners, and hammers) which continuously move over the surface of the blade, dynamically forging it on command. Nanoscale whetting devices insure that the blade is both unbreakable and lethally sharp."

This just reminded me of it

This is a decent site for coding on ComicFury - BBCODE. Not everything there is supported in ComicFury, but a lot of them work just fine.

Thank you Stormwind. This makes using BBCode a lot easier.

Also! Beam weapons! So much better than basic plasma packet weapons!
I love beams over bolts.
I absolutely love the shootyness here, beautiful effect. The splutchness on the shield is also awesome.
Yes I am writing this while tired and caffeinated, so it probably makes little sense and makes a lot of nouns, adjectives, and verbs that do not really exist.

If indeed, the adaptive armor means concentrating the power in frequencies used by the gun, a smarter gun would wait until the armor was acting against a narrow range of frequencies, and then set the gun so the frequency had been changed enough so that it would go through the armor, the soldier, and the layer of armor on the other side. (Another desirable pattern would be to go through the first layer of armor and then ricochet inside the armor.) A gun modified by Aeneas would probably be much smarter than a gun in use by Decimus's forces.

Another thought. Decimus is the kind of person who would put an IFF (identification friend or foe) circuit in the weapons and armor that would stop them from being used against him. Assuming that Aeneas has good intelligence (in several senses of the word), he could insert circuits in the gun that would lock all guns belonging to Decimus's forces.

Not how we are trained to do it in NTPD, but I like this Democlus guy.
