Yup, Democlus would make it, and I think Arianna is getting rather hot under the collar for a certain Red Suit.
Centcomm 23rd Aug 2015, 9:07 PM edit delete reply

Yep .. I think she has good taste!
Sheela 24th Aug 2015, 2:45 AM edit delete reply

She likes what she sees. :)
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:08 AM edit delete reply

Hes certainly got the skills thats for sure :D
Sheela 24th Aug 2015, 9:29 AM edit delete reply

I think that Arianna might be thinking about some ... other "skills".
Stormwind13 24th Aug 2015, 9:43 AM edit delete reply

I don't think it was her COLLAR that reacted to Democlus' martial display, Mark. Think it was just a tad bit lower. :-D
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 10:12 AM edit delete reply

I think your right!
Mark_L_A 24th Aug 2015, 11:05 PM edit delete reply

Well that's UNDER. :p
jamie59 23rd Aug 2015, 9:06 PM edit delete reply

So he's a golden boy just too young as yet.
Centcomm 23rd Aug 2015, 9:07 PM edit delete reply

Yep that he is!
anonymous coward 24th Aug 2015, 7:51 AM edit delete reply
Well, I suppose if you have to pick only one person to be a bodyguard, you pick the most serious, level-headed person you can with the best physical vitality and observation skills. Most of security in general is proactively avoiding or responding to threat potentials before they can become realized threats, and the energy of youth helps with vigilance.
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:20 AM edit delete reply

Demo has already seen the price for failing to do his job - he does not want to disappoint the General.
Lukkai 24th Aug 2015, 3:02 PM edit delete reply

And him not yet being a Golden Boy probably brings the added advantage of other people tending to underestimate him.
That's hardly a bad thing for a bodyguard.
Centcomm 25th Aug 2015, 10:14 AM edit delete reply

Thats true.
Fairportfan 23rd Aug 2015, 9:11 PM edit delete reply

Thus resolving the question someone posed last week about how does a slave figure to get away with having a weapon.
Centcomm 23rd Aug 2015, 9:13 PM edit delete reply

Yeah. I didn't want to spoiler it :D
Sheela 24th Aug 2015, 2:47 AM edit delete reply

Oh c'mon, when the situation demands it, you *should* give your slaves some small arms - That way they make excellent cannon fodder.

It's a time honored tradition to use the slaves and peasants as cannon fodder.
Stormwind13 24th Aug 2015, 5:18 AM edit delete reply

Yeah it is a time honored way of having a slave revolt! Maybe they don't want that for some reason. :-)
Boren 24th Aug 2015, 12:01 PM edit delete reply
Historically speaking there are two ways of dealing with that
1. Treat them so well they have no desire for freedom because they have a better life under your house. (not common but it has been done)
2. Make them fear what is behind them far more than what's in front of them (Far more commonly used despite the possibility of backfiring)
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:10 AM edit delete reply

Oh thats not to say Roma does not use Slave legions. Rome did it to criminals and other such undesirables. Often the reward for such was well worth the time spent.
cherub 24th Aug 2015, 5:17 AM edit delete reply
Its probably a good thing for them not to have guns. Nox would consider that a threat and would kill the slave and seriously injure the others
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:10 AM edit delete reply

That is most certainly true.
velvetsanity 24th Aug 2015, 10:58 PM edit delete reply

I suspect that as far as Nox is concerned, breathing = threat
TheD-Wrek 23rd Aug 2015, 9:28 PM edit delete reply

Boom, nice shot! XD
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:19 AM edit delete reply

OH yes .. Right to the thinking gears! Oh wait .. do they actually use that?
Sheela 24th Aug 2015, 9:31 AM edit delete reply

Naw, their heads are full of small images of ponies.
velvetsanity 25th Aug 2015, 1:01 PM edit delete reply

If that were true, Sheela, I doubt they'd be working for drekhead :P
Lukkai 24th Aug 2015, 3:05 PM edit delete reply

Things a pistol can be used for: Dispersion.

Of your opponents brain matter.
The Old Scribe 23rd Aug 2015, 9:40 PM edit delete reply

Looks like Douchebag's finest have gotten sloppy only dealing with civilians and sitting on their collective asses in the barracks .. now they're just sloppily dead.

Um, yeah, I'd run too if Nox was coming. Feets don't fail me now!
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:18 AM edit delete reply

They tend to rely on there tech and lovely personality's to scare people into submission :D
Haegan2005 23rd Aug 2015, 10:16 PM edit delete reply

I am in full agreement here. RUN!

I think I am beginning to like this guy!
DLKmusic 23rd Aug 2015, 10:30 PM edit delete reply

NO WONDER why Nox hates humans.... she never get's ANY love!
Tokyo Rose 24th Aug 2015, 12:09 AM edit delete reply

Nox just loves humans. The fine print in between "loves" and "humans", however, is "to messily and gratuitously slaughter, dice, chop, eviscerate, and dismember".
Sheela 24th Aug 2015, 2:49 AM edit delete reply

She also loves to purée them. :)
velvetsanity 24th Aug 2015, 4:28 AM edit delete reply

Does she also make julienne fries?
Wolfsbane 24th Aug 2015, 8:02 AM edit delete reply

...and all with one handy appliance! *Now* how much would you pay? But wait, there's more! If you order by midnight tonight, you'll also get...
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:18 AM edit delete reply

I really cant improve on Roses comment here :D
OfficerAllie 24th Aug 2015, 11:41 PM edit delete reply

In New Troy we have a way to deal with androids like Nox. We call it formatting.

How she EVER was allowed out of the creche is a condemnation of New Rome's leadership. 3C would NEVER allow someone like her out.
Hornet 25th Aug 2015, 7:24 AM edit delete reply
Oh I don't know, she'd probably let it out, into the waste as a first line of defense. Maybe even decontamination. Someones gotta kill the murderturds that decide attacking supply convoys is easier than actual hunting.
Centcomm 25th Aug 2015, 10:16 AM edit delete reply

This is why convoys try to avoid them. and if not try to be very heavily armed.
Sheela 25th Aug 2015, 3:50 PM edit delete reply

They also make sure their convoy is heavily armored .. in case a murderturd tries to mate with it!
HiFranc 23rd Aug 2015, 10:47 PM edit delete reply

Some how I think that blue suit had forgotten about Democleus.
DLKmusic 23rd Aug 2015, 11:47 PM edit delete reply

to be fair, he was kinda preoccupied....
Mark_L_A 23rd Aug 2015, 10:52 PM edit delete reply

Just thought of Nox's comment about another "hunter", she could have come upon Democlus' work and assumed that an outsider did it. Not thinking that Democlus would do anything but be a good little mindless drone and stand down.
Sheela 24th Aug 2015, 2:50 AM edit delete reply

That's an interesting though.
It seems very likely.
Stormwind13 24th Aug 2015, 4:40 AM edit delete reply

It is possible, Mark; however, I consider it unlikely. I think Nox is skilled enough, thorough enough that she would recognize Democlus was WITH Acantha. And they aren't hunting, but escaping. No I think it is in response to someone else.

My first thought is still on Miraiko. Though it could be CeCi and Dolly, I guess. Or maybe someone we don't even know about yet.
Mark_L_A 24th Aug 2015, 6:13 AM edit delete reply

This is DataChasers, there is ALWAYS the possibility for a plot twist we don't even know about with M'lady Cent and M'lady Rose doing the blueprints. ;)
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:17 AM edit delete reply

There are a lot of possibilitys :D
Sheela 24th Aug 2015, 9:33 AM edit delete reply

... what? Democlus is pregnant with Decimus' cat ?
But how can that be?

/lost in translation
Tokyo Rose 24th Aug 2015, 3:48 PM edit delete reply

that. that right there is pretty much how "Lost In Translation" segments happen.
Sheela 24th Aug 2015, 4:06 PM edit delete reply

Ah, sounds like we know how the next episode of Lost in Translation is going to go then. :)

I rather enjoy this little oddity that keeps popping up everywhere.
OfficerAllie 24th Aug 2015, 11:52 PM edit delete reply

Please no. My two roommates love that show. I mean I love acting with the local theater group but the acting on that show is so bad sometimes I'm embarrassed to admit I'm an actress.

I know that stage acting is different from broadcast, but still, there are standards.
Hornet 25th Aug 2015, 7:28 AM edit delete reply
Wait shouldn't that be Deci's cat girl was impregnated by Democlus??? I mean if you're even willing to go there, at least go biologically correct..
Centcomm 25th Aug 2015, 10:17 AM edit delete reply

They screw it up with the Epiphyte on there cast so why fact check now !
Sheela 25th Aug 2015, 3:51 PM edit delete reply

Whaat? Hornet is pregnant with the cats baby too?
But how can that be?

/also lost in translation
OfficerAllie 26th Aug 2015, 9:51 AM edit delete reply

Did anyone see my shoes? They were here just a minute ago.
Sheela 29th Aug 2015, 9:34 AM edit delete reply

... your shoes are pregnant wirh the cats baby too?
But how can that be?

/lost in the tumbledrier
OfficerAllie 12th Sep 2015, 2:46 AM edit delete reply

Hey! I've got to be back at work in the morning!!

I need my shoes!
Rashala 23rd Aug 2015, 11:17 PM edit delete reply

Yeahs someones ReALLY turned on now.. *hands slave girl a fane and cold drink*
Matt Knab 24th Aug 2015, 2:43 AM edit delete reply

Stupid union rules...
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:17 AM edit delete reply

I know right! Someone ought to change that. Oh wait .. someone can! HI Acantha!
mjkj 24th Aug 2015, 2:47 AM edit delete reply

Oh, spltch. I guess he is done for - poor janitors...

Oh, he indeed is a gold star - and Arianna got flustered =P

Yeah, probably a good idea, Acantha...

PS: only about 400 votes to rank 10 - vote people we can make it top 10!

Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:16 AM edit delete reply

Yeah Arianna likes strong capable men :D
Sheela 24th Aug 2015, 9:34 AM edit delete reply

Oh man, top 10 would be awesome. :)
Dragonrider 24th Aug 2015, 5:31 AM edit delete reply

Wonder bow car away Nox is right now, and how far away are Dolly and Ceci, Nox and Ceci should be an interesting match up.
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:15 AM edit delete reply

We are going to catch up with Dolly and Ceci very soon :D Actually should be Friday ...
cattservant 24th Aug 2015, 5:42 AM edit delete reply

The situation is coalescing!
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:16 AM edit delete reply

Yep just like the blood on the walls :D
Sheela 24th Aug 2015, 9:34 AM edit delete reply

Man, the Janitor is gonna be piiiissed!
Lukkai 24th Aug 2015, 3:08 PM edit delete reply

Judging the shot itself probably left a mark as well: Don't bother cleaning it. Call a mason and have that part of the wall redone.
That one guy 24th Aug 2015, 4:30 PM edit delete reply
I'm fairly sure the janitors have a lot of practice holding their tongues about this kind of irritation.
Just_IDD 25th Aug 2015, 4:37 AM edit delete reply
If the blood on the wall is coalescing then New Roma needs better nanite controls. I think you want the blood on the walls coagulating. That's what usually happens if you take blood out of its meat sack.
XRzer04 24th Aug 2015, 5:43 AM edit delete reply
Interesting twist here that the redshirt is the one doing all the Not dying...
CptKerion 24th Aug 2015, 7:29 AM edit delete reply
He may be a red shirt, but he's also a black guy who DIDN'T die first. That means he'll probably live to the end.
anonymous coward 24th Aug 2015, 7:56 AM edit delete reply
I wish that would happen, cliché murder is so very, very necessary and there's been a little bit of cliché-overspill in the comic already. I think this might just be a level of threat promotion: Hype up Democlus for competence to make Nox scarier when she quickly eviscerates him later.
Lukkai 24th Aug 2015, 3:09 PM edit delete reply

So you say that Dem got promoted from redshirt to Worf?
Wolfsbane 24th Aug 2015, 8:05 AM edit delete reply

Don't jinx it!

Go, Dem!
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:14 AM edit delete reply

NOt all the Redshirts are bad people. THe blues for the most part are bad guys one and all.
DLKmusic 24th Aug 2015, 9:13 PM edit delete reply

NOOOooooo.... Don't say that! Spock and McCoy both have blue shirts....

What are we gonna do????
Centcomm 25th Aug 2015, 10:18 AM edit delete reply

well they should be glad they aren't visiting Roma :D
Stormwind13 25th Aug 2015, 11:04 AM edit delete reply

Or coming anywhere NEAR Democlus at least. He seems to be hating Blue(boys) right now. :-)
chk 24th Aug 2015, 6:37 AM edit delete reply

I love that mixture of energy beam and brain coming out of that guy's head in the 1st panel.
CptKerion 24th Aug 2015, 7:28 AM edit delete reply
You know what? I feel REALLY sorry for the janitor.
Timotheus 24th Aug 2015, 11:43 AM edit delete reply

What's bad is when you have to use a scrapper and shovel before you can start mopping. And keep changing the water in the bucket until it stays clear. The bleach and acetic acid fumes get to you after awhile, too.(Ah, fun times.)
That one guy 24th Aug 2015, 4:34 PM edit delete reply
I'm fairly sure several slick salesmen approached the Black Palace staff within a year of Decimus taking the throne with a wide variety of products for cleaning up these, and other human remains-type messes.

I can just hear the pitch now: "Are you tired of your slave spending half the day cleaning that baked in blood, brain, and guts off the wall from yesterday's 'festivities,' when that slave should be available to get you a snack? Worry no more, because with this amazing product..."
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:13 AM edit delete reply

Rapid thermal mechanical expansion is whats causing the brain matter fountain. Technically it should be coming out both sides. MY bad. DO not ask me about the research I do for injury's and death. And I admit to holly-wooding up some injury's to make it more obvious whats going on.
chk 24th Aug 2015, 11:08 AM edit delete reply

Accurate or not, it's pretty cool.
CptKerion 24th Aug 2015, 6:20 PM edit delete reply
Timotheus, I know your pain.
I clean bathrooms in a burger king.
When you're ontop a ladder with a paintscraper removing stuff from the ceiling before soaking it in high concentration chlorine sanitizer, you decide you really want that education.
Centcomm 25th Aug 2015, 10:18 AM edit delete reply

Thank you! :D
Sheela 25th Aug 2015, 3:54 PM edit delete reply

Compaired to highway toilets, any fastfood restaurant bathrooms will be considered fairly pristine.

Never have I ever, seen anything worse.
Timotheus 25th Aug 2015, 7:47 PM edit delete reply

Middle School Bathrooms.
Youthful Energy,
Pre-Adolescent Obsession With Bodily Fluids and Solids With Adolescent Creativity and Intelligence,
And a total lack of regard for the consequences and effect on others.
zartala 24th Aug 2015, 7:42 AM edit delete reply

Is it wrong that my first thought was, "Boom! Headshot!"?

Also, I really enjoyed Democlus' line in the first panel. :)
Centcomm 24th Aug 2015, 8:11 AM edit delete reply

Hehe - Actually in my prescript I think I eather was thinking the same thing or put it in to the shot giggling :D
Lukkai 24th Aug 2015, 3:10 PM edit delete reply

One of us! One of us!
OfficerAllie 24th Aug 2015, 10:04 AM edit delete reply

Oooohh, I like him. I wonder if he might be willing to emigrate to New Troy and apply With NTPD.
Stormwind13 24th Aug 2015, 11:50 AM edit delete reply

Not sure that would be a good idea, Allie. Right now BLUE outfits are the enemy. In New Troy, that might cause some issues! :-D
Tokyo Rose 24th Aug 2015, 3:49 PM edit delete reply

"Dammit, Officer Democlus, could you maybe go an entire day without reflexively kicking a fellow officer in the junk?!"
OfficerAllie 24th Aug 2015, 11:19 PM edit delete reply

Hey, not all of us wear Blue. And most full humans get administrative or training duties.

I think he'd make a really good trainer for our emergency response teams or self defense classes at the Academy.

Sheela 26th Aug 2015, 4:12 AM edit delete reply

Alternatively, he could become a good kicking advisor. :)
JackOfClubs 24th Aug 2015, 1:21 PM edit delete reply

I thought I remembered Arianna showing signs of attraction to Democlus when they first met. Looking back (waaay back) to page 754, I now see that it was actually Malati that was impressed with him, but there might still have been some faint attraction on Arianna's part.

On a different note, nice trigger discipline by Acantha in panels 3-5! Sorry, pet peeve. It is disgusting how often "well-trained" people are depicted with their finger on the trigger when they pick up the gun. Nice attention to detail here!
Sheela 24th Aug 2015, 2:45 PM edit delete reply

Arianna actually asked Democlus out on a date when he was assigned as bodyguard for Acantha.
So she has made her intentions quite clear. :)
DizzasterJuice 24th Aug 2015, 2:00 PM edit delete reply

Acantha's shirt says CG girl? Love it!
I can tell from panel 4 that she's V4. I'm so glad that fixed that in V5 - V7. But upgrading isn't worth it. I was in the process of making new morphs for my character's cat features to V6, then V7 came out so I said "f" it and quit. lol
Centcomm 25th Aug 2015, 10:20 AM edit delete reply

Yeah I haven't even bothered trying to use V7 at all .. besides the amount of slut wear vs normal clothing is still insane.

also that shirt always amused me. Cg Girl indeed :D
That one guy 24th Aug 2015, 4:38 PM edit delete reply
Can they gather up spare energy cells for their pistols from the dead guards?

(tech page mentions E-clip & E cell and fusion cells for weapons)
OfficerAllie 24th Aug 2015, 11:29 PM edit delete reply

That depends on which manufacturer and model they are using. E-clips and E-Cells aren't fully interchangeable between weapon models.

I think it would be like trying to use a magazine for a antique 9mm Beretta in an antique 11.43mm SigArms or antique 6mm FN-Colt in an antique 7.5mm Remington-Winchester
Just_IDD 25th Aug 2015, 4:52 AM edit delete reply
I guess an energy pack from the blue-turds could help Deme, but so far he has fired 1 shot and used the energy blade for what looks like 20 seconds. Id say he probably has his own spares to use first. Acantha's weapon is a custom build with a double sized miniturized magazine that the AI manufactured for her. I doubt he intended it to be more than a holdout.
OfficerAllie 25th Aug 2015, 5:43 AM edit delete reply

Democlus fired two shots. One to distract the first guy he took down, the second to take out the second.

I'm not familiar with the weapons of New Rome, so I can't say what the specs on his pistol are.

However everyone I work with and know who carries a weapon always has at least 4 spare E-clips or E-cells.
Lukkai 25th Aug 2015, 4:29 PM edit delete reply

People accidently getting handed 7.65mm ammo for their 9mm pistols happens every now and then during the Eidgenössisches Feldschiessen and Obligatorisches Bundesprogramm. And not all notice before firing the first shot.
First of all, your shot will go wide. Even at 25m only. Second, the pistol won't reload on its own as it should.
OfficerAllie 26th Aug 2015, 9:56 AM edit delete reply

7.65mm in a 9mm? How did they even keep the cartridges in the magazine?
Lukkai 31st Aug 2015, 6:51 PM edit delete reply

The size of the cartridges, especially the diameter for the most part (leaving out the bullet itself obviously) is actually not that different. Meaning they somewhat fit into a 9mm clip.
Oldarmourer 2nd Jul 2019, 8:03 AM edit delete reply
The thing you should be worried about is that it's entirely possible to chamber a .380 or 9mm in a 5.56, the case head has exactly the same dimensions and the overall length of the smaller cartridge is less than the longer one before the shoulder...and your shot isn't going to go wide, although parts of the rifle might ;)
Centcomm 25th Aug 2015, 10:22 AM edit delete reply

E-cells are pretty cross compatible . However Demo does not really need any. He has several more.

Thats not to say some weapons don't have specialized cells. Demo's pistol is still almost fully charged.

And Acantha really does not have to worry about shots.
Draginbeard 24th Aug 2015, 11:30 PM edit delete reply

The player character in me is also screaming "LOOT THE BODIES! LOOT THE BODIES!"
Stormwind13 25th Aug 2015, 4:47 AM edit delete reply

LOL Draginbeard. Spoken like a TRUE gamer! :-)
Centcomm 25th Aug 2015, 10:14 AM edit delete reply

Rolls dice.. You find.. 2 Sub assault weapons ( both code locked to prevent anyone from using them ) 2 MK2 power blades IDs that no longer work ( thanks to Doc Silver. ) and 2 suits of slightly used LBA Armor. ( both damaged ) And two adaptive shield units :D

hehehe :D
Sheela 25th Aug 2015, 3:57 PM edit delete reply

... do they have any wallets ?
I take any credit chips they might have on them !

*rolls dice* woohoo, 19! :)
Centcomm 25th Aug 2015, 7:56 PM edit delete reply

AT Sheela .. 19 is pretty sad on a percentile system. ( HEE! ) you dont find anythig except pocket lint.

At Lukkai
2 shield units weigh about 1 pound with battery's Black market price on the guns is around 1400cr a piece.
Lukkai 25th Aug 2015, 4:31 PM edit delete reply

How heavy are those shield units and can I carry both of them at the same time?

Also, what's the black market price on those guns?
Sheela 26th Aug 2015, 4:13 AM edit delete reply

Dangit, I was rolling for the wrong system! >:(
velvetsanity 25th Aug 2015, 1:06 PM edit delete reply

I hope Democlus survives to be assigned as Acantha's permanent bodyguard
That one guy 25th Aug 2015, 3:23 PM edit delete reply
You mean the leader of her personal guards once Decimus is dead? As leader of New Rome, she'll need several.
