Ave Democlus - I salute you
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 9:36 AM edit delete reply

Indeed! :D
DLKmusic 27th Aug 2015, 9:06 PM edit delete reply

Glory to your name.... AWESOMENESS!!!!

Don't get killed by Nox, Dem, Acantha needs you...
Sheela 28th Aug 2015, 1:49 AM edit delete reply

No she doesn't.

Arianna on the other hand ..
T1-G3R2501 28th Aug 2015, 5:36 AM edit delete reply
I agree Sheela! Especially after the last page!
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 9:37 AM edit delete reply

Yes she does .. and in one piece even!
Dragonrider 27th Aug 2015, 9:07 PM edit delete reply

Didn't think Acantha would allow a suicide mission, hope Dolly and Ceci get there before Nox.
Stormwind13 28th Aug 2015, 5:32 AM edit delete reply

As I read it, Dragonrider, leaving Democlus behind was NOT what Acantha wanted to do. Unfortunately, she couldn't counter his logic, his conclusions either. Arguing about would waste time they do NOT have, so she had to accept it.

For the good of the city and the people, Acantha has to sacrifice someone. And she is SO hating that right now, but she IS a worthy ruler so she did it anyhow.
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 9:37 AM edit delete reply

Acantha doesn't have a lot of choices here .. she cant argue the mans point.
The Old Scribe 27th Aug 2015, 9:11 PM edit delete reply

Democlus is truly a Spartan. They shall not pass, Princess, this I swear. He's the kind of man they will sing about around the council fires.
MirrorField 27th Aug 2015, 11:25 PM edit delete reply
More likely that her numinous horror of AIS makes "suicide by playing 'Horatius at the bridge'" to look reasonable...
Stormwind13 29th Aug 2015, 9:15 AM edit delete reply

Very good point, Mirror. Democlus can't go into the AI's zone. At 5 klicks Aeneas was killing ANYTHING with a weapon. And at that range, Acantha probably can't talk to the 'real' Aeneas to get him exempted from that death.

Now the Kyle that was sent in (not the one that left New Sparta) might be able to get around that, as I'm not sure his Taser implant really counts as a weapon as far as Aeneas is concerned.

Aeneas: "Isn't that cute, he as a sparkly sword. I see your sparkly sword and raise you a REAL weapon!" ::As his hand lights up with hellfire (from the plasma caster, mark THREE)::
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 9:38 AM edit delete reply

Yes he is. ( at Mirror field facing a cassian .. vs instant and horrible death by the AI .. Hmm )
Pirtnac 27th Aug 2015, 9:13 PM edit delete reply
Uh oh. I hope Dolly doesn't have to go through Dem. I'm also wondering about the return speed of that tram. Are they about to get a surprise?
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 9:38 AM edit delete reply

Hmm Dolly VS Demo.. Would I do that?
Haegan2005 28th Aug 2015, 3:29 PM edit delete reply

yes.
Sheela 29th Aug 2015, 9:11 AM edit delete reply

Ofcourse you would.
DLKmusic 29th Aug 2015, 7:01 PM edit delete reply
Is that even a question?
Just_IDD 27th Aug 2015, 9:14 PM edit delete reply
So sad. He knew this would happen but he is still morally strong enough to do his duty to the Royal House. Max choose well to promote this man to this position. Max knew Democles would have passed. I think someone mentioned on Monday that because he has the skill but not the Star, people would underestimate Demo.
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 9:39 AM edit delete reply

Yep most likely :D
DLKmusic 29th Aug 2015, 7:00 PM edit delete reply
Is that even a question?
Just_IDD 30th Aug 2015, 4:43 AM edit delete reply
I don't believe so. This is a comment section. Tis' not proper to question the gods(writers) on their choices or actions. Doing so also tempts fates. There is always a danger of difficulty, strife, death and other such things as they drive the story and life forward. Its point, to acknowledge the choices made. It's also a sighing sadness as Acantha learns something that she knew as an effemeral possibility is really an actuality. By invoking the ritual forms, Dem is making a tactical decision that has personal consequences, easier on Acantha. Acantha for her part is being very careful not to tempt the fates in return.
Haegan2005 27th Aug 2015, 9:29 PM edit delete reply

ouch. But he is a loyal man who stands by his oath and his beliefs.

Really well crafted scene ladies!
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 9:59 AM edit delete reply

Thank you very much! :D
TheD-Wrek 27th Aug 2015, 9:29 PM edit delete reply

!_! *salute*
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 9:59 AM edit delete reply

Yep .. Poor guy.
Mark_L_A 27th Aug 2015, 9:33 PM edit delete reply

I have to wonder now just how far behind Maxus is.

Also considering what info CeCi has, when Dolly and CeCi catch up, CeCi will stop Dolly from taking them out. Maybe Nox will be caught between Maxus and Democlus and Dolly and CeCi?
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:00 AM edit delete reply

Maxus has a lot on his plate right now. He is hoping Acantha is confident enough to get herself safe
Sheela 29th Aug 2015, 9:13 AM edit delete reply

Alternatively, he hopes that Democlus is competent enough to get Acantha somewhere safe.
anonymous coward 27th Aug 2015, 9:42 PM edit delete reply
Shame Nox will probably just go *around* Democlus and then--as an afterthought--shoot him in the back.
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:03 AM edit delete reply

Owch that would suck. for the girls :D
mjkj 27th Aug 2015, 10:22 PM edit delete reply

Awwww...

Poor Demo - did he suddenly become a redshirt?

And Acantha has to make one of her first decisions as ruler...

I wonder if a certain person who shall not be named is ahead of them and if he is still alive...

rfaramir 28th Aug 2015, 8:16 AM edit delete reply
I wonder if Democlus' life is really in danger…

They don't know that our good Dr Silver has control of most communications, so the whereabouts of the tracked bracelet may *not* be in the Cassians' hands. I doubt they'd be handing out bracelets or anything else that communicates on their private net (which *is* still up), even to high-value prisoners.

It'd be nice if they have a good scare/cry, and then no one in power notices where Lynn is until they regain control of comms later and 'suddenly' see that she is in Aeneas compound and have to wonder how she got there. Secret tram stays secret! (To be used again later, of course.)
anonymous coward 28th Aug 2015, 2:34 PM edit delete reply
To answer your question, we'd have to know where Nox is, what she's doing, and why she hasn't already torn through this party like an A-10 antitank burst through a civilian 4-door sedan.
anonymous coward 28th Aug 2015, 2:36 PM edit delete reply
Hypothesis: Acantha's connection to Aeneas is known, she's waiting along one of the potential paths to his territory in ambush. If the party is *really* lucky it's the wrong one and she never figures that out in time.
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:04 AM edit delete reply

Dem,o is only as much of a red shirt as he was before .. :D
kitty 28th Aug 2015, 8:11 PM edit delete reply
I don't think anyone of significance is going to get killed "off screen". If it happens we're going to see it.
Sheela 29th Aug 2015, 9:19 AM edit delete reply

Considering he's covered in red from top to toe, I'd say that YES, he's a redshirt .. and then some.

But that doesn't mean he cannot take a few levels in badass, and go down in a blaze of glory, and have a dying moment of awesome! Unfortunately, since he's too cool to live, he will probably end up being a heroic sacrifice, the redshirt way!

... a few tropes may have been invoked here.
cattservant 27th Aug 2015, 10:45 PM edit delete reply

Fine Nova Roman drama,
but where is the tram?
Sheela 28th Aug 2015, 1:50 AM edit delete reply

Kyle took it.
chk 28th Aug 2015, 6:32 AM edit delete reply

That's what I thought.
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:04 AM edit delete reply

heheh :D
Cal 27th Aug 2015, 11:44 PM edit delete reply
Ave, Princeps! Morituri te salutant!

I'd stand with Democlus any day.
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:05 AM edit delete reply

Awesome :D
Cal 28th Aug 2015, 10:06 PM edit delete reply
As a former Cavalryman from the Cold War days, we're used to long odds and low chances. Fiddler's Green is our Valhalla. Dem would have pride of place there.
HiFranc 28th Aug 2015, 12:26 AM edit delete reply

At least Acantha is genre savvy enough to warn him about tempting fate.
anonymous coward 28th Aug 2015, 12:57 AM edit delete reply
Am I being 'genre savy' when I tell people to carry umbrellas when they go out so that it doesn't rain? Acantha knows what Nox is and has some grasp of how she operates. Democlus is tempting fate by trying to set up an ambush for her.
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:07 AM edit delete reply

heh remember what happened when he said " so far so good ? " OOPS!
Stormwind13 28th Aug 2015, 12:23 PM edit delete reply

Don't tempt the Fates. You never know, they MIGHT be listening!!!
Sheela 29th Aug 2015, 9:24 AM edit delete reply

No we aren't .. now keep talking.

And don't worry, we're totally *not* listening!

Sheela 28th Aug 2015, 1:49 AM edit delete reply

Ah, there we go.
Yeah, poor Democlus, he's about to loose all his limbs, isn't he ?
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:08 AM edit delete reply

Awesome clip!
Sheela 28th Aug 2015, 3:24 PM edit delete reply

More like so : None shall pass

:D
Just_IDD 30th Aug 2015, 4:06 AM edit delete reply
Nun(s) shall pass.
Matt Knab 28th Aug 2015, 2:45 AM edit delete reply

LEAVE NO MAN BEHIND!
Also...he gets bonus points for using "confound". XD
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:10 AM edit delete reply

hehe :D thats our Rose coming up with excellent lines for 8 years now :D
XRzer04 28th Aug 2015, 5:04 AM edit delete reply
"screw it. I'm a redshirt anyway..."
Stormwind13 28th Aug 2015, 6:14 AM edit delete reply

Don't think so, XRzer04. He isn't just here to show how the monster works. He is here to be an EXPENSIVE piece of meat! To slow or stop the threats to his Princess.

Living through what is to come is in question. Failing will only happen if he no longer draws a breath. And if he is destroyed but SUCCEEDS he would count it as a win.

Good man there. Maxus chose well (not a HUGE surprise, considering how capable Maxus is).
Mark_L_A 28th Aug 2015, 7:33 AM edit delete reply

Go for the checkmate, even if it kills you it what I say.
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:11 AM edit delete reply

Demo has no intention of being a simple redshirt :D
T1-G3R2501 28th Aug 2015, 5:38 AM edit delete reply
I have a feeling that there's gonna be a showdown that goes something like...
"We have you surrounded"
"We have a plan"
"We have an army of Cassians!"
"We have an Aeneas."
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:11 AM edit delete reply

LOL! that would be amusing :D
Sheela 28th Aug 2015, 3:55 PM edit delete reply

Mr Black : "Ah, but *I* have an escape route!"
Stormwind13 28th Aug 2015, 5:54 PM edit delete reply

No, no Sheela. Mr. Black wouldn't taunt his enemies... He would comm or video email them AFTER he was well away from them!
Mark_L_A 29th Aug 2015, 7:23 AM edit delete reply

No, I think Mr. Black is a smooth enough operator that while he would message after he was a away, there would be no gloating. In fact he'd probably sow confusion as to whether he even might have been involved at all.
Stormwind13 29th Aug 2015, 9:17 AM edit delete reply

True Mark. He might still need to fleece them... Erm, I mean do business with them later.
Sheela 29th Aug 2015, 9:26 AM edit delete reply

Oh goodness no, you tell them you have an escape route ready, and then you sell them tickets for the ride out of the hellhole. :)

There's a good profit to be made in smuggling people out of a warzone.
Timotheus 29th Aug 2015, 9:49 PM edit delete reply

But is it a cunning plan?
A plan so cunning you could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel?
velvetsanity 28th Aug 2015, 6:25 AM edit delete reply

My fingers are crossed but I'm not holding my breath regarding Democlus surviving...
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:12 AM edit delete reply

Well we shall see :D
lalverson 28th Aug 2015, 7:11 AM edit delete reply
He's just earned his gold star. For he's about to qualify for the true elite.
velvetsanity 28th Aug 2015, 10:12 AM edit delete reply

Only if the gold star is equivalent to a Medal of Honor, which I doubt. My impression is that it's more along the lines of a special forces tab. Still impressive, but if he succeeds, I'd say he's earned a Medal of Honor.
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:12 AM edit delete reply

Yep hell of a entrance exam dont you think?
Sheela 28th Aug 2015, 3:55 PM edit delete reply

Well lets see if he survives first.
velvetsanity 28th Aug 2015, 5:35 PM edit delete reply

The way I see it, survival earns him a gold star, success (surviving or not) earns him a Medal of Honor. Survival *and* success earns him the jackboots (and possibly a few of the cassians) pissing themselves when he looks at them crossly. :D
KarToon12 28th Aug 2015, 7:27 AM edit delete reply

The only thing that would make this more epic is if he yells, "you shall not pass!" XD
Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 10:13 AM edit delete reply

hehe wait for it!
anonymous coward 28th Aug 2015, 2:31 PM edit delete reply
If it looked like an enemy were about to yell some kind of defiant declaration like that, I'd try to time my shot so that their defiant statement is cut short by blood loss. Nox probably has less hesitation than me against ending the fight pre-emptively while the prospective meat is grandstanding.
lalverson 28th Aug 2015, 12:20 PM edit delete reply
I tell ya. After my second read of this it brings a tear to this old warrior. Very well done you all.

Centcomm 28th Aug 2015, 9:04 PM edit delete reply

*dies laughing* ok Dizz that was AWESOME! *claps*
anonymous coward 28th Aug 2015, 10:16 PM edit delete reply
Was this... was this inspired by my comment on the last comic? Because I was 1) making a sarcastic joke about the fact that we're pretty sure the explosion killed at least one person, and, 2) saying something reassuring to someone that apparently was bothered by the idea of 'collateral damage' casualties from the Bidi-boom van's detonation. But if you turned my sarcasm into literal truth... I don't know if that counts as defeating me in battle or an awesome extension of the joke.
mjkj 28th Aug 2015, 10:50 PM edit delete reply

Yayyyy, Bidiiiiii!!!
DLKmusic 29th Aug 2015, 12:01 AM edit delete reply

ROFL, Dizz... When I saw this, I laughed so hard I almost blacked out!
Mark_L_A 29th Aug 2015, 7:24 AM edit delete reply

Ok, Cent really needs to put that in now.
Stormwind13 29th Aug 2015, 9:18 AM edit delete reply

Alright, Dizzaster... that was HILARIOUS. Well done.
Sheela 29th Aug 2015, 9:29 AM edit delete reply

Hah, yeah ... this is good.

And don't worry Bidi, we all had faith in your ability to survive. :)
It might even have been mentioned once or twice, that you wouldn't be part of the death toll.

We belieeeeve in you!!
lalverson 29th Aug 2015, 2:37 PM edit delete reply
And the Goldfish is thus AVENGED!
Tokyo Rose 29th Aug 2015, 3:46 PM edit delete reply

WELL DONE DIZZ

Lol dirty Tokyo Rose is getting differently dirty. Snarfing pop hurts, snarfing birchbeer burns.

Thanks for the shout, Rose.
Lurker 30th Aug 2015, 9:47 PM edit delete reply
Heck of a scene, ladies. Just hope you aren't going GoT on us.

Folks haven't talked about what D will try. Unfortunately, he has uncertain mission parameters. If the Princess is able to proceed, his object is to delay. If she has to return, he needs to neutralize pursuit. These are significantly conflicting priorities.

His other problem is intel (as always). Does he know that this is not just the Prince grabbing power, but that other factions are also on the move? That is, does he realize that IFF is not an easy matter?

I'm going to assume that, unlike certain two-bit players, he realizes that slowing down the pace of any encounter is beneficial. We already know he understands the value of a good distraction. What can he set up here?

It seems to me that any cassians coming would be moving FAST. But perhaps his best response for them is to simply hide & take the shot. After all, even his boss seemed surprised that they would fight their controls.

WAY to many options for there to be a clear best plan...
Iarei 21st Jul 2016, 6:51 PM edit delete reply
But really, they have the code for the bracelet. Taking it off should have been the first step after the decision to escape.
