But.. but... Dolly needs to GET to her!

(Brilliant page, as usual!)
anonymous coward 12th Oct 2015, 3:44 AM edit delete reply
Don't be silly: Dolly's character arc in this story has been the vigilant, and thwarted, guardian. If that were to be resolved here and now that would either require re-establishing the character with a new arc, retiring the character, or retiring the story. The law of narrative conservation of detail suggests that we probably won't have a long enough story to establish her with a new arc, which leaves the other two options. Which are you in a hurry for?
ProfEtheric 12th Oct 2015, 10:17 AM edit delete reply

@ anonymous coward: I respectfully disagree that those are the only avenues for storytelling from even the point of view of "Dolly gets to Lynn". There is a whole wide world of "interesting times" that can be developed at any point. To be honest, you don't want to stretch things out too much with any given arc, either, because tension without release is completely maddening to the audience.

tl;dr: even when Dolly gets Lynn, there's more to do.
anonymous coward 12th Oct 2015, 11:19 AM edit delete reply
Sure, there would still be stuff to do. Dramatically, somewhere not too long after that either Dolly gets a new character arc, she gets demoted to background character status, or the story starts winding down though. The most likely choices for a new character arc have her find Lynn but be unable to extract her and... ??? profit.
Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 10:01 AM edit delete reply

That is foremost on Dollys Mind at the moment .. everything else an wait! and thanks Prof!
Sheela 12th Oct 2015, 8:33 PM edit delete reply

Dolly is doing the beeline thing.

That's where you line up the bee's and throw 'em at the enemy. *sage nod*
Centcomm 13th Oct 2015, 9:17 AM edit delete reply

LOL! just dont get stung!
Haegan2005 11th Oct 2015, 9:09 PM edit delete reply

Ahhh, someone suffers from the horror of the past. That kind of mental trauma is going to stick around for awhile.
Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 10:01 AM edit delete reply

Yes it is .. For poor Airanna that door might as well say " The gates of Hell "
Lukkai 12th Oct 2015, 6:04 PM edit delete reply

Actually no.

She's pretty certain of the horrors that would await her there. While at the end station of this tramway...
Sheela 12th Oct 2015, 8:34 PM edit delete reply

All that would be needed now, is a giant gate with the words "Abandon all hope, ye who enter.", that Arianna needs to walk through.
Lurker 12th Oct 2015, 8:55 PM edit delete reply
Now THERE is a line that takes me back...to the bus entering Lackland (basic training). As we got close, I noticed that the recruit next to me was getting more & more nervous. As we passed under the welcome sign, I leaned over, and gave him AHAYWE. Poor kid looked like he was ready to try to crawl out a wind. >:D
Wolfsbane 13th Oct 2015, 12:11 AM edit delete reply

Funny, I thought the saying was "Abandon all hope, ye who press enter"...

But maybe that's just for us techie types.
Centcomm 13th Oct 2015, 9:18 AM edit delete reply

good one Wolfsbain
The Old Scribe 11th Oct 2015, 9:09 PM edit delete reply

Dolly knows CeCi's primary programming is being overridden, is on her guard and is waiting to see how things play out. Her primary objective is still rescuing Lynn and she'll take CeCi out if it becomes necessary.

Okay, what's that gadget in the subway car and who's controlling it? I wouldn't get in either. They better blast it to be sure.
Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 10:04 AM edit delete reply

weather or not Dolly realizes Ceci is or isn't under her own control as long as shes still working for Dolly and not against her Dolly really isn't going to act on it. She HAS to trust Ceci to help her though this part. And Dolly knows two things for sure One Ceci will help her get to Lynn. and She is fairly certain Ceci wont take any direct action against Dolly. So other than that Dolly is not as much over looking as Shes not used to Ceci being in FULL Combat mode for all she knows this is how Ceci is suppose to act under duress.
Sheela 12th Oct 2015, 8:36 PM edit delete reply

Even so, Dolly hates leaving behind a wounded person, foe or not, it just doesn't sit right with her guardian mentality.
Centcomm 13th Oct 2015, 9:18 AM edit delete reply

It does not sit well with her but shes currently concerned with Lynn first.
Pirtnac 11th Oct 2015, 9:48 PM edit delete reply
In order of thinking about it:

-Cool glowy rings on not-currently-Ceci's wounds. I guess she has a limit on how many holes get patched at once?

-Dolly is suspicious, but probably isn't going to take too much time on someone dressed up the same as the people she's just been killing left and right. Unless Not-Ceci really creeps Dolly out or she gets past the door RIGHT NOW and mentions Demo being down....

-Cool texture work on that camera bot. I love Stonemason's stuff. Are you using Substance Designer, or a *lot* of bitmap editing?
Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 10:06 AM edit delete reply

The Nano builders Ceci is using are a limited supply .. they work from the inside out. making sure Ceci is functional before making her look pretty .. unless she changes the priority .. and under combat conditions the Nano-techs are going to wait for structural damage before moving to cosmetic things. once combat is over they will work on lower priority items .. unless Ceci directs them to do something else.

and yeah Stonmason makes good stuff! I did tweak the surfaces a bit but the maps are still stock :D
HiFranc 11th Oct 2015, 10:00 PM edit delete reply

How does Acantha know that someone has been there? I take it that all the legends of the mad, nasty Aeneas have hit Arianna at once?
Centcomm Actual 12th Oct 2015, 2:05 AM edit delete reply
Yes it seems Aeneas rep as a murdering thing seems to have caught up
Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 10:08 AM edit delete reply

Acantha knows how to read the displays .. Door 5 tripped - tram went from point A to point B and time stamps She knows she didnt do any of that .. and so the dates should all say a year ago or more.

As for Arianna Stay tuned!
anonymous coward 12th Oct 2015, 11:22 AM edit delete reply
Please forgive my hypothetical sarcasm, but I was tempted to ask what's up with the new ID using the name, "Counterfeit Centcomm."
Question: The heck?
Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 2:54 PM edit delete reply

I did that from my tablet. :D
anonymous coward 12th Oct 2015, 3:39 PM edit delete reply
Aha, the real Slim Shady, not one of those imitators.
Kitty 12th Oct 2015, 4:44 PM edit delete reply
Ahh...something a little "off" about Arianna's reaction, maybe? Waiting to see more....put the popcorn on!
Sheela 12th Oct 2015, 8:39 PM edit delete reply

When it comes to mad, murderous AI's stories of Nova Roma, Aenenas is the ultimate boogeyman.

A master of other AI's, completely insane, and kills everything within 5 km of his core.
Centcomm 13th Oct 2015, 9:19 AM edit delete reply

yes Aeneas's rep is that of a monster. one that eats people and is worse than anything they can think of :D
Dragonrider 11th Oct 2015, 10:07 PM edit delete reply

Watchdog needs his CPU reformatted his programming redone and first aid added. Also Dolly needs to get inside to catch Lynn i, time to save him.
Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 10:09 AM edit delete reply

heh - We shall see ! just hold on now.. :D
Brian 11th Oct 2015, 10:20 PM edit delete reply
I love this comic! However, I wanted to ask a question. The first 3D cgi webcomic I ever read was a space opera about a woman fighter pilot who is reported killed in action by her side and ends up working for the other side of the war. It was completed some time ago. Anyone know a name or link? Thanks!
Stormcrow 12th Oct 2015, 1:33 AM edit delete reply
I think you are thinking of crimsondark, a very good comic.
anonymous coward 12th Oct 2015, 3:39 AM edit delete reply

Thomas 12th Oct 2015, 6:58 AM edit delete reply
I miss crimson dark. I hope the author is doing well writing for EA still.
Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 10:10 AM edit delete reply

I had totally forgotten about crimson dark. and he started a job at Bioware.. weather or not he still works for them is anyone's guess.
Oldarmourer 2nd Jul 2019, 1:03 PM edit delete reply
In case anyone's starting through for the first time or rereading and doesn't know...Crimson Dark continues to this day and has gotten even better, one of the few that matches the art and story telling calibre of DataChasers
chk 12th Oct 2015, 3:55 PM edit delete reply

Crimson Dark' did wrap-up though. It wasn't abandoned mid-story like so often happens.
Sheela 12th Oct 2015, 8:39 PM edit delete reply

SO many stories left unfinished !!
Wolfsbane 13th Oct 2015, 12:15 AM edit delete reply

and thank you *so* much for making me curious to take a look at it and then spend *way* too much time reading his archives...

It was a good comic, to say the least.
Brian 13th Oct 2015, 10:15 PM edit delete reply
Thanks, everyone for the name reminder. I had it bookmarked on Piperka, but with reading 300+ webcomics, it didn't jump out at me.
mjkj 11th Oct 2015, 10:30 PM edit delete reply

Awww... CeCi really sounds broken... :(

Yup, Lynn, you did - and why is Arianna so spooked? Did she see a ghost?

Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 10:10 AM edit delete reply

Yes she did.. a creepy mental insect thing that wants to eat her soul!
Sheela 12th Oct 2015, 8:40 PM edit delete reply

Naw, she just saw the grim reaper equalent of metal ghosts.
cattservant 11th Oct 2015, 11:03 PM edit delete reply

Some bumps in the road...
Thundarl 11th Oct 2015, 11:36 PM edit delete reply

I think the space opera with all the CGI was "Crimson Dark". Here's a link I have to it (http://www.davidcsimon.com/crimsondark/index.php),

Thundarl 11th Oct 2015, 11:41 PM edit delete reply

I keep wondering how this would look like if it was animated. I'd love to hear TeeDee vocalizations and see the bar fight.
Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 10:11 AM edit delete reply

Teedee's lines would be full of four letter words. I did a blog entry on a " dream Cast " of voices for characters in Datachasers if you want to check it out.
Sheela 12th Oct 2015, 8:54 PM edit delete reply

I'm still imagining Decimus as being played by Gary Oldman !
Centcomm 13th Oct 2015, 9:19 AM edit delete reply

hehe I think hes too old now.
Pirtnac 13th Oct 2015, 10:38 AM edit delete reply
True, he's not a Gary Youngman anymore.
Wolfsbane 13th Oct 2015, 2:42 PM edit delete reply

But Henny is. (A Youngman, that is)

Take my comic... please!
anonymous coward 13th Oct 2015, 8:59 PM edit delete reply
Where *is* your comic?
Timotheus 11th Oct 2015, 11:46 PM edit delete reply

Big Brother WAS watching. When they go through the door I'm half expecting an unhappy-face image with some form of the slogan, "Your Ms. Lynn's friend was alive. If you'd stopped to save him I'd have held the tram for you. Aeneus"
Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 10:12 AM edit delete reply

awww ..
anonymous coward 12th Oct 2015, 3:47 AM edit delete reply
Let's see... prisoner in an abandoned complex haunted by the ghosts of its dead human inhabitants, run by a mad AI that murdered those people. When do we see the companion cube and the portal gun show up do you think?
KarToon12 12th Oct 2015, 8:12 AM edit delete reply

I was thinking the same thing! XD
Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 10:12 AM edit delete reply

" Aeneas plays " Still alive " in the background.
Timotheus 12th Oct 2015, 1:50 PM edit delete reply

I'm imagining the Muzak version of "It's a Small World" on the tram.
Kitty 12th Oct 2015, 4:45 PM edit delete reply
Oh god then it IS the train to hell!!
Lukkai 12th Oct 2015, 6:09 PM edit delete reply

At least there is cake.
highlander55 12th Oct 2015, 7:10 PM edit delete reply

And the tram is playing "Staying Alive".
Sheela 12th Oct 2015, 8:57 PM edit delete reply

Good morning, and welcome to the Black Mesa transit system. :)

.. dammit, I'm showng my age, aint I?
anonymous coward 12th Oct 2015, 9:39 PM edit delete reply
So, you remember when FPSes used to be good or you've attended a game design school that had the original HL on the curriculum... big deal? Seriously, I know of a game design course that assigned freaking oldschool DOS-prompt Ultima games (some of the most boring and confusing crap I've ever heard of) on the study list. The teacher whined about young punks who didn't take him seriously when he told them to read the manual and kept asking how to get to the in-game help and tutorial. That is showing age, never mind familiarity with games less than two decades old.
Wolfsbane 13th Oct 2015, 12:22 AM edit delete reply

Hey, Cent could always give us green letters on a black screen with just the words:

"You are standing in an open hallway west of what looks to be a tram tunnel. There is a locked doorway.
>_ "
Timotheus 13th Oct 2015, 1:31 AM edit delete reply

I've got my graph paper and pencil handy.
And my bag of dice.
Centcomm 13th Oct 2015, 9:20 AM edit delete reply

hehe ive seen a few comics try that.. they dont seem to get many readers :D
Wolfsbane 13th Oct 2015, 11:26 AM edit delete reply

The other readers were probably eaten by a grue...
Lukkai 13th Oct 2015, 4:04 PM edit delete reply

Their fault for moving around in the dark.

@Timotheus: More like bags of dice in my case. XD
anonymous coward 13th Oct 2015, 8:50 PM edit delete reply
I never beat the babelfish puzzle, but I will say that Zork was better than Gariott's Ultima works.
anonymous coward 13th Oct 2015, 8:59 PM edit delete reply
Whoops, Lord British's real name is Richard Garriott, excuse me.
Mark_L_A 12th Oct 2015, 2:25 PM edit delete reply

When I read this, the only thing going through my head is my old training. "Beware the Fatal Funnel"

When you go through a door during an entry you are boxed in and you want to get through it as fast as possible.

Now I'm worrying about Dolly and CeCi going through the door and not having clearly defined ID's OTHER than Lynn that they might open fire on Acantha before they KNOW who she is and Arianna already being freaked out might make herself a target as well.
Gilrandir 12th Oct 2015, 3:03 PM edit delete reply
I suspect (based on the "board when ready" comment) that the door isn't opening until Aeneas wants it to open, no matter what Watchdog may think she has to say about it. (Cecil is currently out of the loop.). And I suspect that Aeneas won't be wanting it to open until Acantha is safely on the tram and the tram is underway. Otherwise, Aeneas would probably have said something like, "Please board as quickly as possible. I am hoping to see you soon."

I suspect that observing Dolly's frustration as she sees the tram's tail lights vanishing in the distance would simply add slightly to the mad AI's amusement factor. ^_^
Gilrandir 12th Oct 2015, 3:06 PM edit delete reply
Aargh! I hate typos! "CeCi", not "Cecil".
chk 12th Oct 2015, 4:01 PM edit delete reply

Auto-correct, probably. Hate it.
Lukkai 12th Oct 2015, 6:11 PM edit delete reply

I've deactivated auto-correct on all of my devices for a very good reason.

Well, me being multi-lingual basically left me no other choice anyway.
highlander55 12th Oct 2015, 7:12 PM edit delete reply

I go back and edit my screw ups.
Centcomm 12th Oct 2015, 11:38 PM edit delete reply

hehe you could edit those pesky errors if you had a CF account ! :D ( ok shameless plug made. )
DLKmusic 12th Oct 2015, 7:58 PM edit delete reply

At least Lynn didn't say "what could possibly go wrong?"
anonymous coward 12th Oct 2015, 9:46 PM edit delete reply
But what could possibly go wrong with asking what could possibly go wrong?
Centcomm 13th Oct 2015, 9:21 AM edit delete reply

you invoke the mighty god Murphy !
DLKmusic 13th Oct 2015, 12:09 PM edit delete reply

Anon invoked the mighty god Murphy!!!!! WE ARE DOOMED!!!! DOOMED I SAY!!!!!
anonymous coward 13th Oct 2015, 8:56 PM edit delete reply
No, I asked what could possibly go wrong with asking what could possibly go wrong. I know that the cliché says asking that question is supposed to lead to negative outcomes, but aside from vague references to the notion of hubris nobody has proven this phenomenon is statistically significant in repeatable experiments that I'm aware of. Accordingly, it's important to research what those negative effects are, their likelihood, and the exact causal mechanism. For science!
Stormwind13 13th Oct 2015, 4:19 PM edit delete reply

Or she could have said,"We're perfectly fine..."
