Acantha is trying to think 4 steps ahead, and I think she is failing a little bit.
anonymous coward 20th Oct 2015, 9:08 PM edit delete reply
Well, to be fair, the news she's just gotten is, "The delicate balance of politics that has just been disrupted by your brother sending out an assassination attack on Maxus has now had gasoline poured on it and the whole thing set on fire with a combined insurrection-invasion plot." How well would you do if you thought you were playing a game of Go and the opponent suddenly jumps your pieces and says, "King me!" then?
Mark_L_A 20th Oct 2015, 9:27 PM edit delete reply

@AC, Would you please quit make me giggle, It makes me sound like I am a small schoolboy.

OK this can't be all there is,yeah we still have to settle Douchie, fix Aeneas, return a cat girl to her sister, sign a peace treaty between New Troy and Nova Roma, restore the Nova Roman economy and find some socially redeeming work for the cassions. Fortunately Ceci did not try to kill Acantha, DAMMIT I WANT to hear her call Dolly Mommy in front of Lynn and still think she should call Lynn Sis.

I'm not part of this city but the civil library trustee council in a particular town in America responded to news that, "The Patriot Act," permitted no-notice surrender of library patron records. The thing was, librarians weren't even supposed to be allowed to tell people if they had been subject to these zero-warrant evidence searches. So, their plan was that they would report each week that they had not had such a request, so long as that was true. Then, one week, one of the senior librarians *didn't* give the expected confirmation, and they knew.
For all that it was irritating and maybe a little inappropriate, Ceci calling Dolly, "Mommy," may have actually been a clever plan to give information to Dolly on just how much Ceci's actions were being constrained by her watchdog.
Sheela 21st Oct 2015, 4:37 AM edit delete reply

True, CeCi suddenly stopping saying "mommy" is information in and of itself.
But I don't think it was done deliberately, as watchdog would have known of such a plan from the beginning since it's part of her very thoughts, and it could have just continued saying "mommy", so that idea is flawed.

Oh, and Dragonrider forgot about the pollution from the Nova Roma manufactories. That needs some attention as well.
Dragonrider 21st Oct 2015, 6:08 AM edit delete reply

@anonymouscoward: It was neither irritating nor was it inappropriate it was an endearing piece of stage business that provided comic relief and some much needed misdirection when they got to Nova Roma. Malatai was the only one that caught Ceci as more than a Bimbo Sexbot.
chk 21st Oct 2015, 4:38 PM edit delete reply

I'm with Dragonrider.
anonymous coward 21st Oct 2015, 8:31 PM edit delete reply
Fine, you want to argue that it was mission-appropriate? I'll grant that, but it is still embarrassing in my opinion. That is a subjective measure, and that my experiences and values give me a different opinion on the matter than you folks apparently have. You can't argue me out of thinking that adult intellects behaving ingenuously cutesy-juvenile (or airheaded) isn't embarrassing.
Tokyo Rose 22nd Oct 2015, 3:37 PM edit delete reply

@anonymous coward

It irritated and embarrassed me, as well as making me feel kind of creepy, every time I had to write a line of Ceci's more syrupy cutesy-kiddie dialogue.

Deathbot!Ceci is disturbing in a whole other way, but at least she isn't talking like a five-year-old.
anonymous coward 22nd Oct 2015, 8:18 PM edit delete reply
I would prescribe beer--the cause and solution to all life's problem--for that kind of feeling, but it's hard to get the dosage right. Perhaps a really spicy Bloody Mary instead?
Centcomm 22nd Oct 2015, 3:54 PM edit delete reply

We shall see. :D
The Old Scribe 20th Oct 2015, 9:09 PM edit delete reply
Yay! Family reunion! It's touching how Lynn and Dolly react with each other. Sometimes I think Lynn thinks of Dolly more as a mother than a guardian. I also think the feeling is mutual.

CeCi is so beautifully badass in Death Angel mode, I think she's my favorite character.
Sheela 21st Oct 2015, 4:38 AM edit delete reply

In almost every respect, Dolly *is* Lynn's mother/parent.
Lukkai 21st Oct 2015, 7:09 PM edit delete reply

I guess Lynn does have two mommies.
Centcomm 22nd Oct 2015, 3:56 PM edit delete reply

If you are perceving a Mother / Daughter vibe off of Dolly and Lynn you would be reading it totally correctly .. Calliope and Lynn have not really bonded .. Lynn Still loves her mother but Calliope spent far too much time in a bottle than was good for them.
Haegan2005 20th Oct 2015, 9:10 PM edit delete reply

Okay, I think I have something in both my eyes.

And now we have a circle. Of course, has anyone forgot the AIS sitting in the corner? And here is Ceci threatening, and offering protection at the same time. Hmmm, this can only end well, right?
jamie59 20th Oct 2015, 9:14 PM edit delete reply

Acantha... Oh shit they're more dangerous than Nox & the rest.
Sheela 21st Oct 2015, 4:39 AM edit delete reply

"Gods ... just like that..."
Lukkai 21st Oct 2015, 7:10 PM edit delete reply

She would probably be less worried if she knew how it went down. What with a suprising shot from behind with a heavy hitting weapon.

Not a lot less, but still.
Lurker 21st Oct 2015, 10:45 PM edit delete reply
It's not been terrible well spelled, out but it is important to keep in mind that Acantha is NOT some spoiled palace brat. She is young, yes. But she knows that replacing her brother is her duty to her people, and I believe that she has actively worked to be prepared for that eventuality.

So she knows that Nova Roma is behind New Troy technologically. "Just like that" means that she now has a measure of just how far behind they are. Not a happy thing for one with their eye on the throne.
Centcomm 22nd Oct 2015, 3:56 PM edit delete reply

Good Catch Lurker.

Finally, that warm fuzzy feeling.

But I sense a plot twist -

* The poster on the wall in Panel 2 is ominous: "Genetically adaptive and bloodborne pathogens present." None of our fine ladies are wearing the required protection. Eek!
* What happened to Kyle and Aeneas?
Dragonrider 20th Oct 2015, 10:08 PM edit delete reply

Have a feeling that was placed there when Aeneas got pissed off about the attempt to kill his core programming. they may be at the edge of his zone of destruction.
anonymous coward 20th Oct 2015, 10:49 PM edit delete reply
I missed that, hope it's a dummy or obsolete sign because turning into zombies just would not suit any of the ladies present.
Sheela 21st Oct 2015, 4:42 AM edit delete reply

Oh ... OoOooooohhh ... they successfully extract from the place, go home and accidentally murder all of New Troy with a supervirus ?!

Man, you have an evil and devious mind!
I like it!
Wolfsbane 21st Oct 2015, 11:45 AM edit delete reply

That's right. Soon we will hear Aeneas say, "Issa thinkin yousa people ganna die?!?"

...and then they all drop to the ground writhing in pain from Jar-Jar-ism.
That one guy 21st Oct 2015, 3:51 PM edit delete reply
Hmmm... It's actually potentially feasible that New Rome may have some biological tech that isn't available to New Troy (or even CentComm in the memory she refuses to share). They've been off the grid as far as the other cities are concerned and have been whole hog in the biological superiority and research thereof.

I wonder if they have anything that could get past Ceci's sensors. I don't think it's out of the question that they might.
anonymous coward 21st Oct 2015, 8:34 PM edit delete reply
What on-board sensor suite capable of identifying and assessing 'adaptive pathogens' do you think a stealth-specced Black Angel is gonna have? Mind, that could be something that even utility models may have standard if they're expected to go wandering the wastelands....
Centcomm 22nd Oct 2015, 4:00 PM edit delete reply

At all -

THe signs are MOSTLY stuff Aeneas has put up over the years to scare and intimidate visitors. The fact that they are all in English ( NOT Standard and NOT Roma ) makes them unintelligible to a lot of modern people although the symbols still mean the same thing.

Aeneas has a wacky sense of Humor. and isnt fireing on all cylinders.

Ceci would be able to detect nreve agents or pathogens in nano seconds. and she has internal filters to protect her to a degree - even if she did catch a super bug it could not survive in her biology .

Nor Dollys Lynn , Acantha and Arianna would already be dead.

You just cannot please some androids!
That one guy 21st Oct 2015, 3:55 PM edit delete reply
Well, it was stated that Black Angels are not meant to achieve sentience due to the synth brain damage caused by loading additional protocols. That being the case, complete free will override routines wouldn't be immoral. In fact they'd probably generally be considered appropriate when you consider the tasks they're frequently given.

I wonder if there'll be enough of Ceci left when this is done that CentComm will offer to transfer her consciousness into a new body or not.

Pirtnac 20th Oct 2015, 11:16 PM edit delete reply
Status update: I remain at "Squee!" Level One. Status unlikely to change for foreseeable future.

Random observation: Not-Ceci seems to favor the lie by omission rather than straight up false statements. "We can't help him (because my objectives conflict)" and "Nox reached him first (to assure you we didn't kill your friend while leading you to believe he's just plain dead rather than dying)."

If they take a trip back to the palace (NT team securing the upper levels for Lynn's extraction) they're going to pass Demo's body. Lynn will ask if he's alive, and if so what can be done to save him. It will be interesting to see if Lynn has an override on a Black Angel's mission objectives.

Of course, that pattern puts a question to other things she's said and what may be left unsaid... but I think I'll keep my plot predictions in the short term :)
Sheela 21st Oct 2015, 4:48 AM edit delete reply

Imagine if they have to walk back the way they came, and Democlus is all liike .. "I'm not dead ... I feel fiiiine." :D

Dem: "I'm not dead yet!"
CeCi: "Quiet you!"
rfaramir 21st Oct 2015, 8:26 AM edit delete reply
Dem: "I feel like going for a walk"

Ceci is doing strange things with the truth. Almost taking credit for taking Nox out (credit goes to *Dolly* with an assist by Democlus), in addition to what Pirtnac points out.
That one guy 21st Oct 2015, 4:00 PM edit delete reply
Considering that the other team was given potential kill orders for Lynn, I doubt that CentComm intended Lynn to have any ability to override Ceci.

Granted, we don't know quite what form the deal between Helios and CentComm originally took, so uncertain the degree or manner in which the Taylors are capable of compelling specific action from CentComm (it seems to be the case that it exists, CentComm knows, and the Taylors have forgotten). It's not completely impossible that Ceci, as intended to be a more ambulatory extension of CentComm as opposed to a separate individual, may not have been able to have the Taylor override completely removed, though.
That one guy 21st Oct 2015, 4:01 PM edit delete reply
Sorry. Forgot to add:

CptKerion 20th Oct 2015, 11:32 PM edit delete reply
This panel is... unnerving. On one hand I want to smile and "awwwwww" seeing Dolly and Lynn... on the other hand I read what Ceci says and get nervous.

I am not sure whether to love the mood dissonance or hate it.
Gilrandir 21st Oct 2015, 11:44 AM edit delete reply
Love the dissonance. That's good writing, there. Single-level, one flavor dialogue is much easier to do.
Timotheus 21st Oct 2015, 12:42 AM edit delete reply

I just want everyone to know I'm doing my very best to restrain myself from downloading some variant of "Hello Dolly" on the basis that there may be a better moment for it sometime in the future and this isn't an exactly perfect time for it. But it is nagging at my sense of the moment.
Tango Xray Actual 21st Oct 2015, 1:24 AM edit delete reply
I hate to ask this, but are you Ladies ever gonna grow Lynn up?? She was coming along and now she's regressed now that 'Mamma Bear' is here to handle everything, unobtainium claws and all! Dolly really needs to override the 'take care of the 'little one'' directive a bit.

'Securing the upper levels' LOL.... That's choice, however, what are they going to do since no one, not Dolly, Ceci nor anyone else "upstairs" 'securing things' knows about everyone's favorite princeling's 'life insurance policies....'
Timotheus 21st Oct 2015, 3:20 AM edit delete reply

True, but they've now made contact with someone who can actually let them know about the "situation", and possibly do something about it.
Visvires 21st Oct 2015, 4:50 AM edit delete reply
Getting out of a hostage situation is an emotionally charged event. This doesn't indicate a permanent regression, just enormous relief.
Stormwind13 21st Oct 2015, 4:53 AM edit delete reply

Actually Tango-X, I would have been SHOCKED, if Lynn reacted any other way! Lynn was ripped from her fairy tale world and dropped into the deep end with the piranhas (gutters) and sharks (Cassians and Maxus, or maybe he is an Orca). She has been run through the wringer and then someone she KNOWS loves her, will protect her shows up. Releasing all the fear, the stress and seeking a little bit of comfort is the HUMAN thing to do.

Now if she fades into the background, stops talking and merely follows Dolly you may have a valid concern. If she pulls herself together and contributes (however small) I would take that as some growth. The Lynn that left from New Troy wouldn't have been doing that!

And that is what I expect, as I believe Lynn has STARTED to grow up (it has been only a couple weeks after all). There are signs that direction, to me, at least.
Dragonrider 21st Oct 2015, 6:17 AM edit delete reply

@Tango Xray Actual: Actuall quite a frw kmow, by now Veronica has located some and is disarming them, Kali knows of the and so does Maxus, Noctis knows about them as has anyone who has listened to his rants and rages. He is not the type to keep that information secret.
Stormwind13 21st Oct 2015, 7:24 AM edit delete reply

A reputation is only effective if people know about it. So Douchimus makes sure that EVERYONE knows death will be the reward for harming him.
That one guy 21st Oct 2015, 4:07 PM edit delete reply
I seem to recall one of the authors stating in the comments that Decimus' failsafe was common knowledge to those in the know but not the general populace.

Story Tokyo Rose knows (may have found out through Miraiko from Julia, maybe otherwise). She sent Kyle on that mission. She also left info for Ceci, which I believe has been updated at least once since Dolly & Ceci arrived. Assuming Tokyo Rose properly identified Ceci as a Black Angel and her mission, she would've passed some degree of knowledge about the failsafes along to Ceci. So it's feasible Ceci knows.

Also if Acantha isn't too rattled, she'll bring it up as a concern as the next part of this conversation (maybe Friday, maybe after we get to see more of someone else).
Sheela 21st Oct 2015, 4:15 PM edit delete reply

Lynn is a damsel in distress, she doesn't NEED to be mature.
Centcomm 22nd Oct 2015, 4:05 PM edit delete reply

Lynn is responding how 90 percent of people who have been in a hostage situation would respond when someone they love and care for comes barging in the room and says .. Ill protect you. Shes not regressing at all - She will still have grown from her choices and the actions she has taken.

Thats all im going to say about that.

Bad Dolly, BAD!
Timotheus 21st Oct 2015, 11:33 AM edit delete reply

She made mistakes and misjudgments, which lead to this. But she did get permission and did everything up front and in the open, so it cannot be called wrong. Nothing that requires immediate chastisement or correction anyway. (She KNOWS she screwed up.)
Rational review and discussion can be left until everyone is back home and mom (who also had a part to play) can take part.
That one guy 21st Oct 2015, 4:14 PM edit delete reply
Actually, to New Troy's knowledge, Lynn didn't actually do anything wrong. She got proper permission and was aboveboard about the trip and it really wasn't that much of a stretch. She was ambushed by mercenaries hired to wait for her and bring her back. I think Lynn feels like she's in the wrong due to generally seeming whiny & weak compared to everyone around her (which is hard to judge how much that's her in general versus her shaken by the experience).

Honestly, with as determined as Decimus has been on this, the traps wouldn't have gone away and it just would've happened later on (which might've cancelled it if Acantha took power first, but probably a visit home from college would've happened before that, and this Maxus madness probably wouldn't have come to a head without the additional argument of Lynn).
highlander55 21st Oct 2015, 6:57 PM edit delete reply

There is still the question of who gave the information that Lynn was going to New Sparta and Lynn's flight schedule! I don't remember that every being given by Centcomm and Rose. Someone in New Troy is a dirty Rat Fink and needs to be put on a rotisserie.
Stormwind13 21st Oct 2015, 8:56 PM edit delete reply

Very good point, highlander. Somewhere, someone gave away information that allowed Lynn to be captured. And currently, no one seems to know (and since it isn't being addressed in the comic, care) about where the leak is.
Centcomm 22nd Oct 2015, 4:07 PM edit delete reply

actually that will be handled at some point .. trust me.
Lukkai 22nd Oct 2015, 5:34 PM edit delete reply

Oh, we're sure it will. But we're quite enjoying speculating about how, when and where it will. And who will be involved (especially by way of being the culprit).
Stormwind13 22nd Oct 2015, 5:51 PM edit delete reply

TRUST YOU?!? I'm not so sure about that, "Miss I'll Screw Over Your Ride So You Won't Get There!" (>.<)
That one guy 22nd Oct 2015, 4:23 PM edit delete reply
We'll have to see what authors have in mind (as we have confirmation we'll find out), and someone turning on Lynn is possible but not strictly necessary.

Lynn was going to spend her 18th birthday with friends. Not sure how much people of Datachasers time are incautious with social networks and advertising meetups or whatnot, but that event/desire could've been found with generally public data ahead of time. Certainly knowing the 18th birthday of someone relatively famous. When Kyle confronted Decimus, he was known as her boyfriend and being from New Sparta by the dinner guests, so either a fairly broad leak or some of that was common knowledge. The kidnapping effort here might've been a likely contingency thing as opposed to certain knowledge it would fly, it's not as if he couldn't try again later if she didn't fly by.
chk 22nd Oct 2015, 4:46 PM edit delete reply

Hah. In the years I've been reading this, It never occurred to me that someone had to know where and when to abduct her.
JackOfClubs 21st Oct 2015, 11:21 AM edit delete reply

"Based on information acquired, I will protect you as well as Dolly and Miss Taylor."

Too bad she didn't say that in Latin so we could tell whether the "you" was singular or plural. Even though Acantha did change the "me" to "us" in her question, I am thinking Ariana may be out of the scope of Ceci's protection. Does this, I wonder, connect with the strange behavior we have been seeing from Ari lately? Something still unresolved there, I suspect.
Gilrandir 21st Oct 2015, 11:48 AM edit delete reply
I suspect that, from Watchdog's perspective, Arianna is _exactly_ as irrelevant as was Democlus.
That one guy 21st Oct 2015, 4:16 PM edit delete reply
I think impact on Dolly, Lynn, & Acantha's actions make Ariana slightly more valuable. Ceci would protect her somewhat just to avoid the delay from the others.

However I agree that the loss of Ariana in and of itself would equate to exactly 0% difference in mission success evaluation.

Anyone wondering how CeCi knew _which_ Cassian Dolly killed? Assuming CentComm _had_ detailed dossiers on all the Cassians, it's reasonable to assume that would be part of the black angel mission briefing package. But that's not normally the sort of information a powerful and paranoid city-state casually shares with its most feared and hated rival. It seems implausible that CeCi has been casually browsing the Top Secret personnel files of covert operatives during the copious free time she's had during their desperate running battle, and Nox wouldn't seem to be the sort of 'easy target' for trade-espionage that, for example, Kali would be. So why was Nox instantly and immediately recognizable to CeCi?

Look back a few pages, to "Not Harmless"/"Priorities". A mysterious Someone *cough cough* dropped a few tidbits of information that Ceci picked up in her trawling through the palace data network.

Then shouldn't Nox's headless corpse have been labelled in Ceci's HUD? I was figuring you were going with Ceci picking up the audio of Acantha talking to Ariana last comic.
Lukkai 21st Oct 2015, 7:21 PM edit delete reply

Though that might be explained in that Ceci was sure it was Nox, but had not been able to really confirm it. If she has any way of doing so at all.

Is it too much to conjecture that TR can drop by and turn watchdog off? Might well be the best solution for the remainder as I have a feeling Lynn will >>>Not<<< leave unless Acantha is assured safety.
That one guy 21st Oct 2015, 4:27 PM edit delete reply
I would expect Acantha has a pretty good assurance of safety as-is.

She's known friendly to Lynn and trawling of New Rome news/opinion would have shown Ceci that Acantha is much more respected than her brother, who's demanding the worst of the old war's arsenal and seems to want to use it. Acantha's death would require either complete and total regime change in New Rome, lopping off a testicle from Decimus to toss to Setorius to grow a new heir before incinerating him, or wiping New Rome off the face of the earth. Additionally a strong contingent of the army and citizenry would follow her against Decimus (recall Ceci might have some info from the other team and not just from TR).

So I think coldly logical Black Angel Ceci can honestly state that keeping Acantha safe is not as high a priority as Dolly or Lynn, but very close after that.

Another thing that probably will pass by everyone here is that Ceci admitted her order of concern with her word order here. Yet another clue for Dolly to think back and notice aside from the lack of "Mommy" statements and speech pattern changes.

Didn't miss that at all, That one guy. Dolly is and always has been Ceci's first order of concern.

Cent-com's initial instruction to Ceci was to protect and help Dolly get through to Lynn. Protecting Lynn is part of helping Dolly, but protecting Dolly is Ceci's first priority.

As it was poorly stated on my part, I'd like to state that by "pass by everyone here" I meant the characters in the comic and not the commenters. I'd be disappointed if more than 10% of regular commenters and/or more than 30% of non-commenting readers forgot Ceci's order of priority.

Oh yeah. I did misunderstand your comment.
That one guy 21st Oct 2015, 6:36 PM edit delete reply
Easily done with the phrasing I used. I appreciate your comment pointing that perspective out to me so I was able to correct it before too many people read the first without the clarification.
Dragonrider 22nd Oct 2015, 8:13 AM edit delete reply

You forgot the final part of the CentCom mandate. >>>Destroy if damaged and capture of technology by others likely So much for sentimental protection. Also Acantha is NOT safe, Ceci is now a loose cannon, Douchbag still has his doomsday projects on tap and unless Aeneas marshals all his troops, places himself as General in Charge under Acantha there is no way in hell she will survive Douchebag in his current state. He has already issued an order that would kill her from poison gas, nothing is off the table now.
chk 22nd Oct 2015, 4:07 PM edit delete reply

You're right, I had forgotten that so I just re-read some of it.
Cent-com told Dolly that Lynn "MUST be eliminated" if she can't be rescued.
She also hoped 'they' (I assume Calliope and Dolly) would forgive her if they find out what is truly going on.
There is a whole lot of stuff set in motion during the past few years that could be leading anywhere.

As usual trying to predict what the 'Dynamic Duo' is up to is futile, but it will surely be epic.
That one guy 22nd Oct 2015, 4:28 PM edit delete reply
I didn't mean to suggest Acantha is safe in general, I mean that it would make sense for her to be safe from Ceci and for Ceci to be willing to put some effort into protecting her if it won't interfere with protecting Dolly or protecting or eliminating Lynn (probably full genetic destruction).

I think Ceci is less of a loose cannon right now than she usually is (i.e. exuberant displays of affection) and more the puppet Centcomm intended her to be all along.

Agreed. I don't think anyone should feel too secure.

Beautiful artwork here. I especially like the sight of Ceci's face just over Dolly's shoulder in the second panel. Spooky! Let's see how it all plays out from here... :)
