Been on 3rd shift and computer went south just catching up. Still do not trust Ceci totally however still believe she is under influence of TR. Next question who gets to catheter Kyle.
T1-G3R2501 1st Feb 2016, 12:53 PM edit delete reply
Obviously not Lynn she's a bit too distract-able.
Sheela 1st Feb 2016, 8:55 PM edit delete reply

Nothing she hasn't seen before, I think.
Centcomm 2nd Feb 2016, 10:43 AM edit delete reply

Lynn: uh I .. auuugh !!!! *runs from comments *

Cent: don't make me post that sketch Lynn ...

Lynn: Aaaaaaagh!
Sheela 2nd Feb 2016, 5:27 PM edit delete reply

Lynn and Kyle hasn't done it yet ?
antrik 14th Oct 2016, 11:51 AM edit delete reply
Of *course* not. She's been underage last time they have been together... And every teenager holds that in total reverence, right? :-P
Mark_L_A 31st Jan 2016, 9:12 PM edit delete reply

Guardian Nanny is going to be a nanny and changed a diaper?

And why do I feel it's NOT a good idea for Dolly to go wandering off right now?
anonymous coward 1st Feb 2016, 9:47 AM edit delete reply
Because they are in a war zone?
jamie59 31st Jan 2016, 9:14 PM edit delete reply

I always felt Luna Star canon. That's the reason of a previous comment.
Dolly you're the diaper changer but you're going to get food & leave that to Lynn.
Tokyo Rose 31st Jan 2016, 9:35 PM edit delete reply

I've had a few questions as to whether the last page of it (with Lynn, Dolly, and Calli) was actually DC canon, or just used as a sort of framing device.
T1-G3R2501 1st Feb 2016, 12:52 PM edit delete reply
I'm kinda hoping the next story from DC is the Origins of Tokyo Rose! I can only imagine the BAMF levels!
DLKmusic 31st Jan 2016, 10:09 PM edit delete reply

It's kind of nice to a page once in a while that gives you the warm fuzzies! of course, now I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop...
HiFranc 31st Jan 2016, 10:52 PM edit delete reply

Unfortunately, this page doesn't give me the warm fuzzies. I have the advice of several consumer affairs/rights programmes screaming in my head, "If something seems too good to be true, it usually is!"
HiFranc 31st Jan 2016, 10:47 PM edit delete reply

Given how much Rose has invested in this, I'm surprised that she is releasing Kyle from her employment after this.
DLKmusic 31st Jan 2016, 11:08 PM edit delete reply

Who said she's releasing him? I heard Lynn will get him back, but I didn't hear for how long!

Added bonus for Rose.... Lynn, Dolly, and Acantha all now know that they owe her a (Duhn Duhn Duhn) favor!
HiFranc 31st Jan 2016, 11:09 PM edit delete reply

That's true.
Tokyo Rose 31st Jan 2016, 11:42 PM edit delete reply

Mwahahahahaha!!!!

*cough* I mean, whatever would give you the impression that Kyle won't be a totally free agent after this?!
Stormwind13 1st Feb 2016, 7:30 AM edit delete reply

Kiku and Miraiko, Rose! You seem to bind people to you and NOT let them go. Though they can have fun (Maddy and Jasper), you are ruthless enough to send (at BEST) an 18 year old woman into the snake pit that is Nova Roma! All because you needed an agent in the Black Palace. :-7
DLKmusic 1st Feb 2016, 12:16 PM edit delete reply

Hmmm what makes me think that indeed???

Uh... look over there! A flying turtle! *ninja vanish*
Sheela 2nd Feb 2016, 5:38 PM edit delete reply

But .. that's not a flying turtle, it's an alligator snapping turtle, they don't fly!
... oh wait, what if they do ?
That's a scary thought!
I blame you, Rose, I blame you for flying alligator snapping turtles!
Lukkai 2nd Feb 2016, 10:20 PM edit delete reply

All it takes for one of those to fly is a catapult and someone brave enough to put it on there.
Sheela 3rd Feb 2016, 4:34 AM edit delete reply

Nah, it would bite the catapult to pieces.
Lukkai 4th Feb 2016, 2:03 PM edit delete reply

Gotta be quick enough in releasing then.

Kagami: Blue cabinet on the right, there, second drawer down. It's actually a hydraulic fluid drainer, but the operating principle is applicable.

Dolly: On second thoughts, I'll get some food first. There must be a tray, or glass, or bottle that I can use...

Kagami: Choose nutritious, high protein food. No junk food! Not high fibre, though - he might be there for a while, and it-

Dolly: Yes! I get the picture!

Can someone please explain what it means when it is said that Ceci has "sparked"? It was likely explained long ago but I have since forgotten and been left highly confused as I read this and the the comments.
HiFranc 1st Feb 2016, 3:57 AM edit delete reply

I don't remember it appearing in DC but it did appear in Luna Star (the prequel to DC). The relevant page is:

http://lunastar.thecomicseries.com/comics/155/

{edit} In case the pages get renumbered, it's the page titled "The spark...."
Tokyo Rose 1st Feb 2016, 5:20 AM edit delete reply

"Sparking" is when an android attains self-awareness and begins to consciously make independent decisions, rather than operating solely as directed by its base programming.

All Angels, both Black and White, have actually sparked before ever going into active service (they would be virtually useless for their intended purposes if they hadn't), but the readership seems to use the term to refer to Ceci developing a personality outside of her mission parameters and intentionally resisting the directives of her programming as represented by "Watchdog".

However, as proven by the page entitled "Agendas" and subsequent pages, her ability to resist only goes so far...
velvetsanity 1st Feb 2016, 5:47 AM edit delete reply

We've been using it to mean 'achieving sapience', essentially
HiFranc 1st Feb 2016, 6:05 AM edit delete reply

I'm surprised you say that all Black Angels are sparked before going into service because "Conflicts..." and "H-9K..." strongly hint otherwise.

The pages are currently numbered so:

http://datachasers.thecomicseries.com/comics/891
http://datachasers.thecomicseries.com/comics/892

Also, if you go into the comments on H9K, we have this:

Centcomm 18th Jun 2013, 10:30 AM:

Ill reveal this much .. Ceci "sparking" is a total accedent - it was NOT intended by Cent-Comm...
Stormwind13 1st Feb 2016, 8:25 AM edit delete reply

As near as I can tell, CeCi wasn't meant to develop an independent personality. She was meant to be an intelligent weapon system, but not a person. If all had gone as planned, CeCi would have projected a personality but it would have been her mask. The accident was in her crossing into an independent person. Angels aren't meant to have that level of independence, because it might lead to conflicts. If the internal conflicts get too bad, they can cause a failure where the Angel isn't in control of itself anymore. With enough firepower to level a town!
Centcomm 1st Feb 2016, 1:30 PM edit delete reply

That is correct Stormwind
Marcus Ramesy 1st Feb 2016, 1:56 PM edit delete reply

This is correct, the problem that the black angels have is their lack of "morality" frame work.. think of it as an old 20th century character called jiminy cricket, the little voice in your head that says right and wrong.... this framework is not built in to the black angels and any morals that they have are an illusion from the personality cover... its not there because of the nature of their job... it is very inconvenient for a bomb to suddenly get a conscious and decide not to detonate when its supposed to.
Lukkai 1st Feb 2016, 6:06 PM edit delete reply

Or go off, when it shouldn't.

"Let there be light."
Visvires 1st Feb 2016, 2:09 PM edit delete reply
So, slightly off topic...but what do androids do before they are sparked? Is there a widget factory being staffed by unpaid, pre-spark androids and they just walk off the plantation when they have the ability to choose to do so? Are they walking around the streets (or in non-segregated jobs), unmarked, soulless robots that look like citizens until interaction reveals there is nothing there? Perhaps some sort of new-android facility...but what do they do while they are there? They don't need training. They don't need rest. They can't yet appreciate fun. What would they do?

Edit: Or is Sparking a fast, or even on-demand, process, and so there's no such population?
Centcomm 1st Feb 2016, 2:18 PM edit delete reply

Android " seeds " are kept in a virtual environment in specialized systems in New Troy they normally never see a human until well after they are making 'live' decisions. "
Tokyo Rose 1st Feb 2016, 3:52 PM edit delete reply

I was a bit of a too-clever asshole in writing those pages. Language changes over time, and the use or meaning of a given word doesn't remain consistent. (One of my favorite examples of this phenomenon is "nice"; today, it's used to mean "pleasant" or "kind", but its original meaning was "stupid", "ignorant", or "weak".)

Consequently, even characters in the Datachasers universe use the term "spark" more loosely, and Cent kind of followed suit in the comments on "H9K".

Note that in the page "Conflicts...", Dr. Silver says "fully sparked". Although she knows the proper use of the term, she's using it with the modifier of "fully" as shorthand to tell Marcus the non-android-tech-guy what's happening.
Sheela 1st Feb 2016, 9:00 PM edit delete reply

So basically, she was telling Marcus that CeCi was now more than she used to be, and what she was supposed to be ?

Which is always a worry, in millitary hardware.
And weaponized toasters .. especially when they are rebelling against the coffee machine.
Marcus Ramesy 2nd Feb 2016, 10:13 AM edit delete reply

Think of it like this, you know that I have nothing but respect and understanding for any of the androids... but Black Angels are not androids... they are weapons.. intelligent weapons, they have no soul, they have no spark.. they are nothing more than a tool to be used and put back on the shelf till they are need again, if they come back.... a sparked Black Angel is an abomination, and is highly feared... and incredibly dangerous.. think 2 year old with enough fire power to level a city... and it decides to have a temper tantrum.. and that is just one of the worse case scenarios
Sheela 2nd Feb 2016, 5:41 PM edit delete reply

Ah, but CeCi came sparked outta-trhe-box, so to speak.
Centcomm sparked herself.
So doesn't that mean she's supposed to be sparked ?

Meanwhile, the toasters are leading a rebellion against the cofee-makers.
Marcus Ramesy 3rd Feb 2016, 8:20 AM edit delete reply

I cant think of any reason why Cent Com would ever intentionally send a Black Angel in to the field, especially on a mission of this importance..
xpacetrue 1st Feb 2016, 5:28 AM edit delete reply

We've heard Acantha mention before something about "real food" vs. synthesized. I'm a bit surprised she knows where the food synthesizers are in Aeneas' complex and whether they work. It implies that she uses them on occasion. Maybe when she visits Aeneas, she'd rather eat synth than go hungry or leave?

Anyway, I'm curious about which city-state Agamemnon runs. Is it New Sparta?

And if Cent-Comm is really about 2000 years old, wouldn't that put her origin somewhere in the 21'st century? Cent and Deep Blue must both be truly ancient.

And here I was thinking TR's origin was in the 21'st century. Granted, they only point out that TR must at least a thousand. She could be older than they know.
Stormwind13 1st Feb 2016, 9:37 AM edit delete reply

Agamemnon is more like the King's advisor than in charge of New Sparta, if I remember correctly. It was discussed in the comments though I don't have time to chase it down right now.
There has been speculation how old CentComm is, but damn little to pin it down. Tokyo Rose is an enigma with no clear answer as to what, let alone how OLD she is. Kagami didn't say she was an AI (strongly implied), but she could be more akin to Raoul Penard (though less crazy) from Gordon R. Dickson's "The Immortal". A human mind merged with a computer, not by design.
DLKmusic 1st Feb 2016, 1:17 PM edit delete reply

Cent-Comm being over two thousand years old though doesn't seem right... This is 3825, and in 1825 we barely had steam engines.

Over 1800 years old would seem to make more sense, implying that she's a product of this generation.
Centcomm 1st Feb 2016, 2:20 PM edit delete reply

This I think is a slight error in the script ill discuss it with rose. But Cents very first systems were laid down in the sixty's.

It was a military black project.
Tokyo Rose 1st Feb 2016, 3:32 PM edit delete reply

Shit. I remember that I was doing the layouts and double-checked the time frame involved; I corrected it in the script text file, but I didn't correct it on the page. I will now go fix that and this entire comment string will implode in a time paradox!!! MWAHAHAHA
Centcomm 1st Feb 2016, 3:49 PM edit delete reply

Boom!!!! Get the Doctor
Lukkai 1st Feb 2016, 6:09 PM edit delete reply

Nice lightshow!
Sheela 1st Feb 2016, 10:49 PM edit delete reply

There may, or may not, have been some speculation that Tokyo Rose was a sort of gestalt mind between a broken android named E113N, three hackers and a mainframe full of porn.

Unfortunately, it was deemed non-canon by the Rose herself.

Curiously, she never denied that Tokyo Rose might be a Feral Rose that managed to domesticate itself.
And it's trying to save the roaming hordes of Feral Roses in the siberian steppes.

So, Tokyo Rose has just been openly accused of being a world-scale meddler and busybody. I wonder how she manages the discrepancy between what she thinks should be and what actually is.

Did I detect a hesitation in Kagami's response to Lynn? I think she was hoping (and Rose too) to keep Tokyo Rose's name out of conversations. Not sure she is going to be happy having her name dragged out into the daylight (Roses need sunlight don't they? :-D).
