Rose is recording this.

She is recording this, and she's going to send it to every AI on the planet on his next birthday (marked urgent, even).
Sheela 30th Mar 2016, 7:43 AM edit delete reply

And from that day forward, every single AI in the world, will call Kyle "Adorable" ... much to his frustration. :D
Dragonrider 29th Mar 2016, 9:08 PM edit delete reply

This would seem to have all the ingredients for a sincere and monumental SNAFU situation that has gone FUBAR. One can only hope that all back-ups have back-ups.
Second note which AI do I mistrust the most, TR or Cent? Throw them both in a bag, shake bag and dump it out in a dark room couldn't tell the difference.
CptKerion 29th Mar 2016, 10:11 PM edit delete reply
TR seems to consider people vastly less expandable that Centcomm, thus I think I trust TR more. Maybe not on mental damage, but certainly on physical. TR also hasn't lied to any of us yet and isn't even all that manipulative. Honestly, blunt, straightforward, and strategic are good words for her.
Dragonrider 29th Mar 2016, 10:28 PM edit delete reply

@CptKerion: Dunno about all that she set up this whole clusterfuck for her own reasons not from altruistic love of man. Afraid I stand by my original thought, in a dark room you can't tell them apart, they each have their own agendas and I trust neither one of them farther than I could thrown a 1000 lb mass.
CptKerion 29th Mar 2016, 10:41 PM edit delete reply
But are we sure it wasn't altruistic love of man?
velvetsanity 29th Mar 2016, 11:05 PM edit delete reply

Most definitely not. It was utterly selfishly fangirlish love of the rock god known as Aeneas :D
Dragonrider 29th Mar 2016, 11:55 PM edit delete reply

I certainly am. Their were several ways she could have set up a change of power without kidnapping Lynn, having Dolly rebuilt to this spec so she could come in and rescue her. Anyone of these would lead Acantha to the Throne with less blood shed, and with Maxus as Regent. Allowing Acantha to request help from New Troy in restoring Aeneas.
Sheela 30th Mar 2016, 7:45 AM edit delete reply

I don't think any of the AIS' initially planned on Dolly being upgraded. That was just an unexpected bonus.
Dragonrider 30th Mar 2016, 9:27 AM edit delete reply

TR is the one who provided the anonymous guidance for the upgrade body to Calliope Taylor.
Sheela 30th Mar 2016, 2:35 PM edit delete reply

We don't actually know who did that, hence why it's anonymous.

And while it's possible, it's far from certain - For all we know, it could have been Ariel who did it, or Setorius.
HiFranc 1st Apr 2016, 2:33 AM edit delete reply

It was about saving Aeneas as much as getting rid of Decimus. The two are linked as well. To save Aeneas, an AIS expert was necessary. There are a few but I presume that almost all of them would not be willing to go to New Rome. Lynn's kidnapping provided a motive for one to make the journey.
That one guy 30th Mar 2016, 4:18 PM edit delete reply
I don't think it's easy to say if CentComm or Tokyo Rose is more trustworthy.

My gist from Luna Star is that Tokyo Rose in that time was human. In Luna Star comic 163 Respected... (posted 20th Feb 2014, 12:40 AM) Dr. Granger recognized her as Professor Akaibara, talks about a shared classroom situation, and TR expresses irritation at not being physically present to see what's going on. So TR in Datachasers must be either a human taking up the role in each new generation (seems unlikely) or some form of AI based upon Professor Akaibara. My guess is she found a way to upload her mind into an AIS.

CentComm, however, is completely AIS, and she was initially an AIS for the military to analyze situations, set plans, or just red team against human plans. Also she spent centuries in charge of one side's weapons.

From that assumption, CentComm would have less empathy or ability to understand some of the odds & ends and dusty corners of the human condition. Especially after the AIS-forced cease fire, she likely considers that perfectly fine and a condescending/paternalistic attitude towards those bits is actually even reasonable. So CentComm wouldn't ever in her life have considered any single human as anything past a specific value.

TR, on the other hand, does appear to have more human characteristics. I'm not sure that necessarily makes her more trustworthy. I think it makes her less deterministic. Something else that's come out of this which I haven't noticed anyone mention is that due to this situation, TR has made her own biological (and possibly genetic) changes to the presumptive father to the next generation of Taylors (the ones that hold the keys to CentComm's arsenal, and appear to have some degree of control over her that she's encouraged them to forget). Since the nanomachines were passed to Kyle via drinking tea, some latent ones could be waiting around to transfer to Lynn during a kiss too (and likely alter her either slowly or during sleep, rather than having her pass out).

While I do generally believe that TR didn't encourage Lynn's kidnapping, the potential for infiltrating Taylor biology/DNA does make me consider her as more than a little suspect in this situation. That's potentially grandmaster-class "meddling" right there.
HiFranc 31st Mar 2016, 8:35 PM edit delete reply

I got the impression that she was always an AI. "In person" could mean in robot form or within the complex that houses her processors.
Lukkai 30th Mar 2016, 4:44 PM edit delete reply

Couldn't tell the difference? Are you kidding me?

Put TR in a bag, shake it then dump her out of it, you'll be able to make her out everywhere and in any kind of group by the swears and insults she's gracing you with alone!

"Fuck" seems rather tame for Rose observing the equivalent of brain death. I did smile at "Kyle-chan", though.

Edit: HiFranc, it's not only when she's dressing someone down. "Hells bells and fuck a monkey, it's Christmas" was in response to a fortuitous event, and directed at no one in particular.
HiFranc 29th Mar 2016, 11:16 PM edit delete reply

She probably only gets creative when she's dressing someone down. This was not another being stupid, just something unfortunate that happened. Also, they are in the middle of a delicate operation where time is of the essence.
Morituri 30th Mar 2016, 12:15 AM edit delete reply
She probably doesn't have time to get seriously wound up, and besides wants to avoid social miscues that might get in the way of the work.

I mean, just by the time you've said "knobgobbling hollow-necked pus-for-brains monkey shit" you've spent about six seconds that the team doesn't really have.

More importantly, if you start getting too creative, it can give the people you're working with miscues; Even the three treasures of Edo might think she was angry enough that they wouldn't trust her judgment in the op. And Kyle isn't all that used to Rose and might get nervous and mess something up because he'd think she's pissed off specifically at him.

... Well, to be fair, she is - but she doesn't want to give the impression that being pissed off at him is more important to her than what they can accomplish by cooperating right now.
Morituri 30th Mar 2016, 12:19 AM edit delete reply
Incidentally, I get sad sometimes because English has some really awesome swear words whose meanings everybody else has forgotten. I just can't use them anymore.

For example, you've probably read "Slubberdegullion" in Shakespeare, and just glossed over it. Such a shame. It's wonderfully specific. It means someone who attempts to curry favor by giving blowjobs, but who is so terribly bad at it that he just makes the people he tries it on angry.

How the hell do you lose a treasure like that out of your language? What the hell is wrong with English speakers today?
MikeLinPA 30th Mar 2016, 7:52 AM edit delete reply

I have done a fair share of cussing, but I have honestly never needed to say specifically that, so I have not felt its absence in my vocabulary.

Sheela 30th Mar 2016, 7:48 AM edit delete reply

Can we kill Kyle again ? :)
Visvires 30th Mar 2016, 9:22 AM edit delete reply
Sheela, you've already gotten to watch him get shot in the chest. Three times. There are other characters that need killing far more that haven't even died once. Kyle can wait his turn. ;)
Sheela 30th Mar 2016, 2:35 PM edit delete reply

Aww ... but I'm sure we have enough time to kill him again. :)
Visvires 30th Mar 2016, 3:59 PM edit delete reply
He needs to be teased about the "fluid removal first", and we don't have time for that.

Why the deep Kyle hate, anyway? (I tried to look up such a conversation in past comments, but could not find one.) He's a young'un who made many rash decisions, yes, but he's the same age as Lynn, and this comic started with her making a boneheaded move (leaving Dolly behind, oh, how different things would've gone).

Personally, I'm with Yasakani. He's "adorably serious." He wants to save his girlfriend, but lacks the means, so he blindly signs on with TR so he can head up against the leader of a nation with no known backup or precise plan. Gets life-saving cybernetic modifications because he let her slip him a mic; worse than not checking his beverages, why did he not inquire about or request such modifications? Lets his sense of justice override his good sense re: TR's undercover operatives, risking both their covers over an abuse that the operative obviously considered part of the job, and was saved only by the "abuser" being an agent himself. Draws a gun on Decimus for a reason other than immediately firing, without knowledge of the Contingencies that made firing such a bad plan. A young man with a heart of gold and a brain of potato.
Reiko 30th Mar 2016, 7:22 PM edit delete reply

I have to admit, after that little bit of play-acting, I was tempted to bar him from the apartment. It took two weeks for the bruise to fade.
Tokyo Rose 31st Mar 2016, 3:18 PM edit delete reply

Kagami's a bit of the motherly type in some ways. She didn't want Aeneas to feel like he was babbling into the void. :D
HiFranc 29th Mar 2016, 11:11 PM edit delete reply

I guess we are seeing the downside to being feared - no technicians come to maintain you. Then again, given the New Romans' beliefs about AIs, there's a possibility that a technician wouldn't have fixed him.
Greenwood Goat 30th Mar 2016, 2:19 AM edit delete reply
Will Yasakani's teasing mini-crush persist?

Yasakani (via toaster): Good morning, Kyle-chan! Your toast is ready, just the way you like it! ♥

Yasakani (via holotablet): Your personal news feed is set up...

Yasakani (via smart-cooker): ...and your bacon will be ready when you have finished your toast.

Yasakani (via refrigerator): And here is the butter for your toast, all ready to spread!

Lynn: It appears I have a rival for your affections...

Yasakani (via refrigerator): And how, Miss Taylor! *dispenses glass of milk for her* You be good to him, or I'll take him away from you!

Kyle: Lynn... can't you make Cent get rid of her?

Cent-Comm: I don't interfere with affair of the heart except to prevent serious harm, Mr. Lemar. Need I say more?

Kyle: ...Ouch!

Yasakani (via every household appliance that's accessible): *begins rendition of "Someone to Watch Over Me"* :3

Unfortunately, I hear it with Glenn Close's voice...

"I won't be ignored, Kyle-chan!"
HiFranc 30th Mar 2016, 2:20 AM edit delete reply

I'm starting to wonder: Are they problems with the memory cores just degradation over time or was it deliberate sabotage?

I'm reminded of a university where the network kept crashing. Legend has it that, behind the scenes, the network admins ran the diagnostic program and it said everything was fine. They then called out an engineer and found that someone had stolen a lot of RAM then reprogrammed the diagnostics program to think that it was still there.
Visvires 30th Mar 2016, 4:09 PM edit delete reply
Deliberate sabotage by Livius, compounded by the passage of time. I don't remember where it was, but there was a strip early on when TR met Kyle and was discussing how awful it was to watch Aeneas get worse, particularly when he was aware of his descent and unable to stop it. So it's both sabotage and time. Apparently they disabled not only repair capabilities, but some maintenance ones as well.
Centcomm 31st Mar 2016, 11:06 AM edit delete reply

The issues with the AIS are degraded tech and damage left over. The repair systems for Aeneas's main core were damaged. other systems were left in intact.

Only today and tomorrow remaining to nominate 'Luna Star' for HUGOs! That would be, in my opinion:

Best Graphic Story - Luna Star - Kristine Smoot / Terri Hale - self-published online;

Best Fan Writer - Kristine Smoot - Luna Star; and

Best Fan Artist - Terri Hale - Luna Star

They really deserve it!
TheSkulker 30th Mar 2016, 2:26 PM edit delete reply

Thanks for the heads up and details.

I had forgotten about Luna Star and didn't realize that I had to nominate LS instead of DC.

Since we are only in Act I of DC, something specifically needs to be published to qualify. A kickstarter for a print edition might be a bit ambitious but I wonder if a KS for an eBook would be viable? Could even be self published.
chk 30th Mar 2016, 4:54 PM edit delete reply

All the Graphic Novels that won last year were Volume 1, Volume 3, Book 2 or similar.

I believe if Data Chasers Volume 1 (or Book 1 or Arc 1 or Part the 1st or Story One or whatever the Demonic Duo wants to name it) ends in 2016 it would be eligible in 2017.
Morituri 31st Mar 2016, 9:29 AM edit delete reply
I don't know specifically but I think they don't consider something until it's a complete story. Datachasers might qualify when this arc is complete.

It's up to Rose & Cent whether they want to do more arcs after that, or move on to something else. But I'm enjoying the ride.
Centcomm 31st Mar 2016, 11:03 AM edit delete reply

Datachasers is a continuous story but the main first arc will reach its conclusion in a ( unknown ) number of pages.

HiFranc 30th Mar 2016, 1:51 PM edit delete reply

I doubt the people reparing him would use anything in New Rome and I very much doubt that anyone would use Aeneas memory cores for anything (in case it rouses the sleeping horror).

One wonders exactly what the difference is between the backups that Kagami is performing at Tokyo Rose's direction and the backups that Dr. Granger wanted to perform on Galina in Luna Star (discussed in Comic 162 -- Best Intentions)? Dr. Granger was told his backups would yield only meaningless "hardware data" because consciousness could not be copied. Of course, it's likely the state of the art has advanced meaningfully since then. Does this imply that, when this is done, Rose will be able to create unlimited copies of Aeneas' consciousness from her "complete backups"?
HiFranc 30th Mar 2016, 1:56 PM edit delete reply

In Galina's case, she was made out of biological neurones combined with computer technology. Her personality and consciousness was stored in the her biological side. From what I understand, AISs are pure creation so they are a lot easier to copy.

In answer to your last question, not exactly. We are composed of personality and memory. In our case they both influence one another but, in an AIS case (which has perfect memory), I suspect it's a one way street. To recreate the Aeneas we knew, I suspect that you'll need both the personality and memory matrices. However, everything points to both being backed up.
Morituri 30th Mar 2016, 1:57 PM edit delete reply
Perhaps a thousand years or so of technical progress have remedied the problem.

There is a huge difference (usually 2-4 orders of magnitude) in data size between saving the metaparameters and topology of a neural network and saving the full state.

Also, remember Galina saying she didn't have any self-diagnostic programs to run and the autodoc saying her designer was very impractical? Making a real, full backup is a necessary step in doing diagnostics. Maybe Galina didn't have the ability?
Visvires 30th Mar 2016, 4:15 PM edit delete reply
Cent-Comm was in existence at the time Granger assumed he could prepare a backup. If AIS were not capable of backup, it would've likely occurred to him to check before he monkeyed with the system.

I'm with HiFranc. Blame it on the biological components.
Tokyo Rose 31st Mar 2016, 3:23 PM edit delete reply

Galina's biological neural tissue, combined with the state of technology at the time of that incident, was the main problem in that case.
Gilrandir 31st Mar 2016, 5:42 PM edit delete reply
If you copy a sparked machine entity, is the copy already sparked when actualized, or do you need to reapply the stimuli?
That one guy 31st Mar 2016, 8:29 PM edit delete reply
Already sparked.

What else but a copy would you call the emergency backup & restore for Ada & Teedee that we got to witness?
Gilrandir 31st Mar 2016, 10:28 PM edit delete reply
Ah, but we don't know how or if it would be different if you made ten Ada's or fifty TeeDees. Your argument is strong, and I am inclined to agree -- but since we don't know all that goes into restoring from a backup, it is not (I think) necessarily conclusive.

Does that mean it would be comparatively easy to do an "Agent Smith" and just restore one sparked persona over the top of another sparked persona in-place? That seems a fairly horrific thought.
