And we bid fond farewell to yet another character, she will join her lover-to-be in the hereafter ironic indeed if Ada and TeeDee found him and saved him. Didn't think teenage girls would know those suggestions she gave Hiz Douchieness.
Guest 10th May 2016, 9:56 PM edit delete reply
I *really* hope the bit posted a while ago about Max teaching Ari some hand to hand combat is to her advantage here, because I think she doesn't deserve go out as a scabbard.
T1-G3R2501 11th May 2016, 5:28 AM edit delete reply
Sorry Guest she's a scabbard. Obviously you haven't been paying attention to this comic and it's death probability ratio.
Sheela 11th May 2016, 5:04 PM edit delete reply

Unless her lover-to-be isn't as dead as has been hinted at, he may still save his damsel-in-distress. :)
That one guy 11th May 2016, 6:43 PM edit delete reply
I personally don't see anything wrong with the method of death of being by a sword such that I'd say she deserved better. I'd say more reason and degree of impact of death matter more than the physical specifics. Dying for something you believe in and to protect those you care about isn't something to scoff at.

If those weren't the fancy power blades that it nearly certainly is, she could even hope to get it stuck on one of her bones so it couldn't be easily used against Acantha (but with the energy field on those, there's no chance of that).
Centcomm 12th May 2016, 3:04 PM edit delete reply

Decimus is not using a Power blade. thats all ill say.
Sheela 12th May 2016, 3:46 PM edit delete reply

It would make sparklies if it was a powerblade.
Or maybe it's a powerblade that has run out of power.
In which case it's just a blade.
Still lethal though.
ProfEtheric 10th May 2016, 9:09 PM edit delete reply

He is now at the most dangerous he has been in comic...
HiFranc 10th May 2016, 10:57 PM edit delete reply

I agree.
Stormwind13 11th May 2016, 4:27 AM edit delete reply

Very much so, Prof. Trapped, wounded animal dangerous. Warning him Maxus was alive (and therefore coming for him) was a fatal mistake, in my opinion.
Sheela 11th May 2016, 5:05 PM edit delete reply

Doesn't matter, he would be a fatal mistake anyways, no matter what she said.
He's just that mentally disturbed.

At least he's consistent.
DLKmusic 11th May 2016, 9:20 PM edit delete reply

I agree with Sheela on that one, Stormwind... There's nothing Acantha could say at this point that would slow down the crazy train.

Although she should probably get off the tracks before it reaches her.
Gilrandir 12th May 2016, 12:21 AM edit delete reply
Come on, @DLKmusic ... he (Decimus) _told_ her what she could say to slow down the crazy train. Heck, the novelty of having her capitulate to his whims might very well have stunned him for several seconds -- after which, he'd probably kill the slave anyway, just to punish Acantha. Whether or not Acantha is willing to live with herself afterwards ... that's an entirely different question. But the crazy train definitely has speeds and Acantha is as busy shoveling coal into the firebox as Decimus is digging.
DLKmusic 12th May 2016, 8:32 AM edit delete reply

and alternately, if she had capitulated, he would probably have killed her anyway because she dared to defy him in the first place.

Respectfully, Gilrandir, I stand by my statement
Gilrandir 12th May 2016, 9:02 AM edit delete reply
Fair enough, @DLKmusic. Only the creatrices know for sure. I expect, however that Decimus is too evil to let Acantha off with such a quick death.

Of course, we are occasionally given information about Decimus that can be difficult to reconcile. Consider:

1) He is a sufficiently cunning and clever plotter as to garner significant political support in the first place.
2) He is technologically savvy enough to envision the need for the contingencies and to put them in place so securely that they can not be neutralized or negated by some very capable people.
3) He is the sort of foaming-at-the-mouth raving madman that would make his own personal sidearm useless by expending all his ammunition (including reloads) on inanimate objects.while chasing down Acantha when she is known to have at least one armed retainer with her. (Not to mention while he is accompanied by members of his own Pratorian Guard who have been carefully selected for their willingness to employ violence upon weak and helpless targets.)
4) He is not clever enough to realize "Hey! They have bullets too!" and demand weaponry for himself at their expense -- even though he is perfectly happy to disable their power blades by having them burn them out on the security doors. Note: even if the guard's ammo is of different caliber than his personal sidearm, he could still (presumably) take an entire functional weapon away from one of them. Being unarmed in the presence of armed guards is usually something reserved for those with complete confidence in the fidelity, trust, and integrity of those guards (or those who have no choice), not malicious, paranoid, tyrants.

(Just my opinions, of course)
HiFranc 12th May 2016, 2:21 PM edit delete reply

From what I've seen, dictators tend to follow a pattern:

In the early days they use political skill to maintain power, as the insecurity wears off, they start feeling comfortable, and as plot after plot is seen off they start to feel invincible (and they start believing their own propaganda). That is when the crazy really comes out.

{edit} Or, more to the point, comes to the surface.
Stormwind13 12th May 2016, 2:15 PM edit delete reply

Maybe Sheela, but by taunting him that way she brought his reaction quicker. Acantha should have been playing for time not hastening his actions. If Dolly can beat Kali then she would have a Royal A$$kicker to take Douchimus on. By telling him that Maxus is alive she pretty much guaranteed the worst reaction, immediately.
Sheela 12th May 2016, 3:49 PM edit delete reply

Well, true, but at the same time she must be somewhat tired of his crazy after all this time.
Stormwind13 12th May 2016, 4:21 PM edit delete reply

I know I am, and I didn't have to live with him! :-D
antrik 15th Oct 2016, 4:07 AM edit delete reply
Indeed, this might be the most stupid thing Acantha ever did: taunting Lord Headcase, while knowing that the one who protected her from his wrath in the past is *not* available now.

Granted, the situations is probably not very conductive to rational thought. But then again, taunting him like that has never been a very mature thing to do... This is the moment that first made me realise this; and it made me feel seriously disappointed in her :-(
The Old Scribe 10th May 2016, 9:10 PM edit delete reply

One does not defy and taunt a bat shit crazy man carrying a big sword, Acantha, unless you're quick on your feet (and on the draw) of course. Attacking in a berserker rage may have it's advantages, but it also has drawbacks, like not using good judgement in your battle tactics. Ol' Doucheboy might just be setting himself up for an Acantha style judo,, kendo or karate move and wind up on his fat ass. Then they can kick him in the balls.
Dragonrider 10th May 2016, 9:15 PM edit delete reply

@The Old Scribe: That would hurt the kicker too much unless they are wearing steel toed boots pretty sure Hiz Douchieness is wearing full armour. He has to protect his manly figure from harm after all.
The Old Scribe 10th May 2016, 9:44 PM edit delete reply

A steel jockstrap doesn't sound any too comfy. His face isn't armored though and he already has a mouth full of bloody Chiclets. Curb stomp him there.
Timotheus 10th May 2016, 10:46 PM edit delete reply

Dolly probably has steel toed boots but she's kinda occupied right now.
Stormwind13 11th May 2016, 4:41 AM edit delete reply

Taunting wounded animals is never a good idea. Especially when you are within reach of their claws! Acantha you should've known better!
Gilrandir 11th May 2016, 8:03 AM edit delete reply
Acantha is just demonstrating more of that outstanding mental stability for which the Livius family is so well known.
HiFranc 11th May 2016, 1:22 PM edit delete reply

Actually, she's not doing that badly. She's stressed and has reached breaking point. However, she needs to be disciplined enough to be able to stand up to Decimus without letting her mouth run. It strikes me that that's down to inexperience rather than mental instability.
chk 11th May 2016, 4:45 PM edit delete reply

She may be baiting the enraged, wounded animal to allow the enraged momma bear time to wrap up with Kali.
Sheela 11th May 2016, 5:08 PM edit delete reply

So, what if Decimus gets taken down by the girls ?
Would that mean that Acantha, Lynn and Arianna gets to take turns at kicking him in the balls ? :D

I can just imagine Desimus lying un the floor, being surrounded by the girld kicking him while he's down.
Wolfsbane 12th May 2016, 2:37 AM edit delete reply

*Maybe* the plan is to get Dec to attack and then Kali has to stop fighting Dolly so that she can protect Acantha from Dec. Isn't Kali supposed to protect *all* of the Livius clan?

Or am I giving Acantha too much credit?
Sheela 12th May 2016, 3:50 PM edit delete reply

I think this is very much off the cuff, and not much planning done.
mjkj 10th May 2016, 9:33 PM edit delete reply

Awwww...

You tell him, Acantha!!!

Noooo, Arianna, do not get into the line of fire of her...

Visvires 10th May 2016, 9:49 PM edit delete reply
So, her plan was to place herself as a barrier to an armed narcissist's denial.

I retract my opposition to the kneecap plan. Lukkai was right. She should've taken the shot over trying this.
Timotheus 10th May 2016, 10:39 PM edit delete reply

Well, it DOES give Acantha the motivation and opportunity for that head shot we've been talking about. And if THAT doesn't give Dolly the distraction she needs nothing will.
HiFranc 10th May 2016, 10:56 PM edit delete reply

I'm glad that he doesn't believe her (even though it means seeing someone break every rule on the Evil Overlords list) as he would probably try to activate the contingencies if he realised just how much he had messed up.

Then again, I have a sneaky suspicion on what Ceci has done. I suspect that all weapons (including all of the contingencies) are under the direct control of Centcomm. When he tries a message is going to sound saying that he does not have Centcomm's authorisation.
TheSkulker 10th May 2016, 11:23 PM edit delete reply

You mean like "Access denied!"?
HiFranc 10th May 2016, 11:33 PM edit delete reply

Yes. However, I a "Centcomm only authorised user!" at the end.
Sheela 11th May 2016, 5:09 PM edit delete reply

Ah ... dear Lynn.
Tango Xray Actual 11th May 2016, 9:45 PM edit delete reply
More fun than barrels of AI... Tokyo Rose has taken control of The Toys.
HiFranc 10th May 2016, 11:44 PM edit delete reply

I've been thinking. Arianna doesn't have to get into the direct line of fire. Decimus is holding the sword with the blade more or less vertical. She has to time her move to glance the sword off her side. That then gives Acantha time to respond as Decimus focuses his attention on Arianna.
Morituri 11th May 2016, 12:03 AM edit delete reply
Doesn't that warning sign next to the Prince look like the right sort of thing to not be ignoring?

I mean, you know, on the tunnel to the lair of the raging lunatic AIS that murdered an entire army last time you heard from him, and has been maintaining that 5-klick radius with deadly force ever since? And you're already inside that five klicks?

Don't you think that a big ol' flashing warning sign would be the right sort of thing to not ignore?
HiFranc 11th May 2016, 1:02 AM edit delete reply

They are not within the limits. They met with Arianna and co before they got on the tram and Arianna refused to get on. Also, the tram took them far away.

One good thing, Arianna knows that Max is safe.
Tokyo Rose 11th May 2016, 2:59 PM edit delete reply

As HiFranc notes, they're not presently inside the 5-kilometer no-go zone; this is taking place in the lower levels of the Black Palace.
Sheela 11th May 2016, 5:11 PM edit delete reply

So they have a chance of linking up with Ada and TeeDee, since they are tracking Lynn. :)

MikeLinPA 12th May 2016, 9:31 AM edit delete reply
She cannot kill him. He has safeguards (a deadman switch,)implanted in his brain. The question that occurs to me is whether they are controlled by will, or if he has to do die or order the commands. It might be enough to cut off his arms and legs, cut out his tongue, and let him live in useless misery in a cell.
Stormwind13 12th May 2016, 11:23 AM edit delete reply

If I remember correctly, Douchimus also has to input codes periodically or the contingencies go off anyhow, Mark. Just to prevent such actions by others. People have reached the point where they are wondering if keeping him alive is worse than triggering them.
Gilrandir 12th May 2016, 1:17 PM edit delete reply
One is motivated to wonder, at this point, if anyone has informed _Ariana_ about the contingencies? As I recall the exposition for the benefit of the New Troy folks was done in Aeneas' bunker while she was not present. The fact that a briefing was required at all implies it isn't common knowledge at the lower strata of Nova Roma society.

Ladies & Gentlemen ... we may have a winner! ^_^

StellarJay 12th May 2016, 5:03 AM edit delete reply

I think it interesting that Arianna had no hesitation at all in quickly putting herself in mortal peril by jumping between Acantha and an oncoming sword strike, yet robots and AIs were just way more than she could take. Death is not the problem, it's high tech.
MikeLinPA 12th May 2016, 9:32 AM edit delete reply
That is a profound observation.
HiFranc 12th May 2016, 2:25 PM edit delete reply

It's more the mythology. Death is something concrete to face. The stories that have probably been told in New Rome about Aeneas would probably make them think that he was a cross between Frankenstein's monster, a vampire, a goblin, etc. They probably think that he would make Decimus look sane and forgiving.

{edit} Given Decimus's current prediliction for flogging and salting, what would Monster Aeneas come up with?
