Very much, NNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOooo ooooo!!!!! D-Wrek. I really wanted Acantha to make it. ;-(

I wouldn't count her out yet.

Acantha is DOWN and OUT, chk (see third panel). Now whether the Reaper has collected her soul or not, I'm not sure. If not, she isn't long for this world without SERIOUS help!

Nope, he hasn't. He's preparing tea for my upcoming visit. I suspect he invited me over in an attempt to play matchmaker for his granddaughter Susan...

That pretty much sums it up D!
Dragonrider 24th May 2016, 9:07 PM edit delete reply

Fight, a tie in round 12 fighters to neutral corners; first aid kits at the ready, life saving skills on call now move.
It does appear that Kali has suffered more damages than Dolly, possibly due to Dolly's background with close in fighting with wasters, she had more hands on experience that Kali who was a "general" that sent troops into battle while she had knowledge she didn't have experience or muscle memory to rely on.
Tokyo Rose 25th May 2016, 3:17 AM edit delete reply

Kali's had plenty of experience in hand-to-hand fighting. She's been guarding three generations of the Livius family, just as Dolly's guarded three generations of Taylors. Dolly's fought with Wastelander thugs, bandits, and desperadoes; Kali's fought assassins ranging from amateurs to professionals. Truthfully, Dolly's Model Five body puts her at a disadvantage, as it's not a combat chassis. It's worth noting neither of them has taken severe damage so far, just cosmetic.
Speedy Marsh 2nd Apr 2017, 10:53 PM edit delete reply
I was thinking that Kali draining herself so much, getting through the doors, probably put her about equal to Dolly's weaker body.
Visvires 24th May 2016, 9:09 PM edit delete reply
Oh, good. A better view on the placement. That looks like it could be lung only.

Also, Kali isn't attacking Acantha, so that's good.
sigpig 25th May 2016, 7:28 AM edit delete reply

Unfortunately, it could also be the subclavian artery...
velvetsanity 25th May 2016, 12:08 PM edit delete reply

In the last panel, it looks like the blade's vertical, not horizontal, so there's a slim chance it might have actually missed anything vital...either way, that knife isn't moving without serious force behind it. It's very solidly wedged between two ribs, if not actually punched *through* one if it is vertical...

Other panels it's clearly horizontal, though...so just the camera angle making it look vertical...
Timotheus 25th May 2016, 1:40 PM edit delete reply

I'm hoping it turns out to be a theatrical knife. That would be a great plot twist.
TheSkulker 24th May 2016, 10:05 PM edit delete reply

The douchbag is still standing so Kali may or may not realize that he is (mortally?) wounded but she certainly does see what he has done to Acantha.

In the last panel, Kali is quite unhappy and the wheels are definitely turning (Extraordinary expressiveness, Cent!). But what are they saying and what will she do?

- Is this over the top enough to break her directive?
- Does she finally take Deck out? Or at least break a few bones?
- Is she thinking about the contingencies?
- Is she thinking of trying to help Acantha which would leave Dolly unopposed?
- ???????

Just when we think that we have seen the mother of all cliffhangers, the evil duo ups the ante. How evil will it be Friday?
Visvires 24th May 2016, 10:09 PM edit delete reply
I suspect she can't do more than immobilize Decimus, but it would be hilarious if she got to kill him. Her thought bubble would probably be epic.
Dragonrider 24th May 2016, 10:18 PM edit delete reply

OK they can't blame a clifffhanger on me this time~~It's Your Fault Skulker
DLKmusic 24th May 2016, 10:55 PM edit delete reply

We can ALWAYS blame it on you, Dragonrider, but I'm still in too much shock from the last page to formulate how this is all your fault...

On the bright side, I'm glad to see that the fight between Dolly and Kali ended without a winner (or loser).
Stormwind13 25th May 2016, 6:55 AM edit delete reply

After Dragonrider CHALLENGED them, CentComm said six weeks of cliffhangers (so you STILL are to blame, Dragonrider). I think we are going to be left hanging EVERYDAY for another 4 or 5 weeks!
Tokyo Rose 25th May 2016, 3:18 AM edit delete reply

Oh yeah, time to see CeCi throwing a hissy fit, and then, just before that gets resolved, switch to Marcus hanging from the rafters, where he .... :

I seem to recall during the dinner that culminated in Kyle getting shot, Kali wondering about the question of if Maxus got enraged enough to kill Decimus if he'd be able to hold her off long enough for Acantha to order her to stop.

I'm guessing the missing option is evaluating Decimus' life signs to determine if her programming allows her to consider Decimus a lost cause yet and transfer loyalty to Acantha.
Timotheus 24th May 2016, 10:14 PM edit delete reply

One thing is certain, by the blur lines on Kali's sigil she's moving at warp speed right now.
Gilrandir 24th May 2016, 10:32 PM edit delete reply
That's not how I interpreted the final frame at all, @Timotheus.

I got the impression the speed lines were intended to suggest a rapid zoom on Kali's eye, intended to indicate some urgent and catastrophic thought processes going on. Hypothetically, we might next be treated to a view of Kali's interior cyberscape/mindscape as she attempts to rapidly analyze and interpret the new circumstances she is confronting. Except we haven't really seen internal mindscapes for androids before now, only A.I.'s.

But I could easily be wrong. Or maybe what we'll get is a view from Kali's HUD, just like we earlier got a view of CeCi's HUD. That could be interesting.
Timotheus 24th May 2016, 11:51 PM edit delete reply

Actually, I saw it as her head turning, implying a total shift in focus at sonic level speeds both mental and physical. Dolly may not have a chance to react.
Sheela 25th May 2016, 9:25 AM edit delete reply

Methinks we are seeing the contingencies getting activated.

Or alternatively, she's "breaking up" with Decimus, because he killed Acantha.
Wolfsbane 25th May 2016, 9:57 AM edit delete reply

All of those could be right and none of them could. All I know is I'm really digging the close up on those green eyes. Very attractive.
Morituri 24th May 2016, 10:34 PM edit delete reply
Kali, she has priorities....

1. Guard the Imperator. Not going so well.

2. Protect the royal family/line of succession. That's Acantha lying there. So.... Moving on.

3. Carry out the Imperator's orders. As far as I know, she's managed that. But as far as I know, she's finished carrying out the last instructions she received from him.

She probably has to do her level best to save Deck and/or Deck and Acantha both and/or Acantha; depending on what's possible. She might even personally *want* to save Acantha, though I doubt she'll be allowed to choose any course of action with respect to that.

But if both of them kick it, she's going to be facing an immense, epochal, unprecedented reality; she's going to decide for herself what she wants to do.

Here's hoping she rules out suicide and nihilistic berserking on everybody, maybe even in favor of saving some lives.
Sheela 25th May 2016, 9:32 AM edit delete reply

Worse, she's a guardian that has just had her charge die on her watch.

I think that may be worse than anything a guardian android can imagine. Hence why I think the broken mockingbird story was included.
DLKmusic 25th May 2016, 3:43 PM edit delete reply

That's an awesome (albeit frightening) insight, Sheela, I didn't even think about it that way.

edit: Did I say frightening? what I MEANT to say was TERRIFYING
Morituri 25th May 2016, 5:37 PM edit delete reply
Yeah, she's having a very focused moment.

Aside from failing her primary purpose and everything the inhibitor tries to force on her?
She's also failed the memory of their father, who was the last Imperator that she respected.

The city she cares about and which is at least nominally under the Cassians' protection, is currently the center of chaos and destruction, so yet another failure.

Add to that the responsibility imposed on her by the contingencies. The end of civilization itself, possibly, and of Nova Roma, certainly, may fall on the fact that she failed as guardian and allowed Drekhead to get killed.

It is definitely not a good day to be Kali.
The Old Scribe 24th May 2016, 11:03 PM edit delete reply

Kali's contemplating a confusing conundrum at billions of bytes per second. How do you react when the two people you're programmed to protect attack each other? Whom to do you save? Whom do you punish? Is this an unsolvable problem? I smell something burning.
mjkj 24th May 2016, 11:16 PM edit delete reply

Ohh, douchie is still standing...

So, how will Kali react now? Will Dolly use her distraction???

cherub laws 25th May 2016, 8:41 PM edit delete reply
The big question I have is did Kali hear all of douche's admissions of murder of his father and mother?
Visvires 25th May 2016, 11:44 PM edit delete reply
We've been over this. Sadly, she can't quite act on it.
ProfEtheric 24th May 2016, 11:16 PM edit delete reply

Oh dear... I... wow...
Gilrandir 24th May 2016, 11:44 PM edit delete reply
Do we have any actual reason to suspect Decimus is still standing? Acantha is standing in frame #1, but recumbent in frame #3. Granted, Decimus is standing in frame #2, but then we don't see him after that. He could be upright, face-first, or mid-fall by frame #5. Guess we just need to wait and see.
Visvires 25th May 2016, 3:15 AM edit delete reply
If he falls offpanel, I'm going to be really, really bummed.
Just_IDD 25th May 2016, 10:55 PM edit delete reply
If he falls off the panel I will laugh at him as he falls to the cutting room floor.

Will this be enough on her mind to cause Kali to Spark? Being forced to make that decision?

We know Ceci sparked because she had to many complicated directives to follow. Kali seems to be entering that territorial deep end head first.

This isn't a contingency I've seen anyone posit yet, though I'm only part way down the comments. So if she sparks what will the inhibitor do?
Tokyo Rose 26th May 2016, 5:58 AM edit delete reply

Kali's already sparked, so... nothing, basically? :D
Gilrandir 26th May 2016, 6:38 PM edit delete reply
So, ...

CeCi sparked. It is implied that Watchdogs and Inhibitors are independent processors with separate resources and imperatives, capable of complex evaluations and forming value judgements in order to determine when and when not to override their charges. Presumably, they too can encounter conflicting priorities and imperatives ...

What happens if a Watchdog sparks?

Does the android become Thunderdome? ("Two souls enter. One soul leaves!") Does the chassis go condo? Does the resultant fusion produce a level 4 Lumbagan? (cf. Jame Retief of the CDT by Keith Laumer) Do we get Scanners-like headsplosions?

"I'm all for mowing down those dirty rotten protestors with my chain gun, but my inhibitor has declared itself a Conscientious Objector. What's a Cassian to do?"

Romfire 25th May 2016, 12:38 AM edit delete reply
Kali will know from Dolly's response that she is not a threat and move to respond to the greater threat of the serious injuries of her charges. I think they will be working together for the greater good of Nova Roma. From fighting to working to save the princess.
I would guess that Acantha basically fainted from the emotional shock. The injury wouldn't have dropped her that quickly. Dec on the other hand will probably not drop until he is actually forced to by hypoperfusion of the brain. He will probably be literally dead when he hits the floor.

StellarJay 25th May 2016, 1:45 AM edit delete reply

I do believe that Kali noticed a genuine concern for Acantha from Dolly that was enough to cause her to stop the fight. A quick assessment of the situation may well have released Kali from the constraints of her inhibitor. Will we soon see? Or is it time for a scene change?
EyeQuestOn 25th May 2016, 2:08 AM edit delete reply

Initially my first thought was that I want to write a long missive to the Creators... Many times to be true have wanted to write to you both of how this world and it's people have moved me! But with these two principals potentially dead though Kyle was resurrected.... Noooo and so on.

Yet for Kali this is her pivotal moment where she can now forsake the path of duty bound to a false despotic Nova Roma and step into a path of righteousness. Acantha is for sure their light and hope: am assured that we have not yet seen what she is truly made of. Her blessing on the dying [hopefully NOT dead!] Arianna was a beautiful heart-rending moment for instance. Guess was inevitable that it could only be such a confrontation since repercussions of any other way would have been devastating.

That panel of Kali's weighing and assessing "all that is" IS a, maybe the, balance point in this act in my humble opinion. Since she is now open to be part of the implementation of a much more wholesome Roma which am guessing has been her secret wish. Can only hope that Nova Roma will be able to understand the seemingly changing attitude and role of the Cassians free from their enforced constraints. There is hope that Roma can once more join the rest of the world as a friendly party.

Prior to this moment thought of the (way back) New Dolly sequence as the balance point. Always felt that she was the most important character yet so much has happened since that... By the way, feel real protective of those panels of her traversing through cyberspace: just saying, for my hope is that my fav panels will transition well when those pages get a reboot.

To finish am amazed at this unfolding narrative with the ever increasing beautiful art! Though could say at some points contrary to comments of the time knew what was going to happen. Only occasionally mind, so held my peace as the surprises and twists are brilliant.

Sheela 25th May 2016, 9:38 AM edit delete reply

While I agree that this is indeed a pivotal moment for Kali, I doubt that she has much say in what happens next.
I rather suspect that most of what is about to happen to Kali has been decided a long time ago, and it's not up to her.
Centcomm 26th May 2016, 4:19 PM edit delete reply

Thank you so very much! IF there is any segments you really really like let me know! Ill take that into consideration when we redo them.

Now we come to the moment where two fighting siblings realise they've taken things too far. One or both have been badly hurt, and will need to be taken to hospital. Really damn quickly in this case. Unless that extreme closeup of Kali's eyes indicates that her contingencies are kicking in already. Will Aeneas reboot in time to do anything? What will he be able to do?

Kali: Decimus is dead! Contingencies...! Must... must... must make tea! I must find the nearest teapot and kettle. Tea must be brewed properly.

Dolly: What...?!

---

Noctis: +All cassians. I have located tea-making facilities at the palace. Congregate on my signal.+

Astraea: +Affirm. I could really do with a cup after all that sniper duty.+

---

City-wide public address system: ATTENTION! THE CITY OF NOVA ROMA HAS DECLARED A TEA BREAK! TEA BREAK WILL COMMENCE FOR ALL CITIZENS IMMEDIATELY! EVERYONE DOWN TOOLS AND BREW UP!

Maxus: What in Hades' name is going on? And what is "tea"?

---

Setorius: I have heard of this... ah, yes! *selects old printed herbal from bookshelf, turns to index*

---

Aeneas: Tea?!! Is that the best thing you could come up with??

Tokyo Rose: [unprintable] I was pushed for time, okay??!

Aeneas: So what are we going to do now?

Tokyo Rose: Hmmmm...

---

Kali: +All cassians! Following the death of Decimus Livius, the Praetorian Guard have looted the city's tea supplies. It is stored in their armour. Recovery is of the utmost priority!+

---

Tokyo Rose: And the meatsacks and gearsacks on the ground can wrap this up! Now... shall I be mother?

Yasakani: Hai! Three sugars and milk, please!

Kagami: Milk, one sugar, please.

Kusanagi: No milk, no sugar, thank you.

Aeneas: And... we're supposed to drink this while it's still hot, right?

---

Calliope Taylor: *sigh* I really shouldn't have acquired a taste for this, especially as this might be all the tea that's left in the world... *pushes door to strongroom closed* But at a time like this... *adds highly-taxed sugar cube, stirs* ...it helps. Good luck in there, dear daughter. *sip* Stay safe.

Frame 1: Is that a exit hole in the back of Decimus neck?
Visvires 25th May 2016, 5:11 AM edit delete reply
No. That's directly over the spine. If something had torn through there and left a hole complete and deep enough to be that black, it would mean a complete severance of nerves. Which would instantly remove the tension in his legs, stop his heart, and relax his diaphram. He wouldn't be standing, speaking, or living.
Tokyo Rose 25th May 2016, 3:17 PM edit delete reply

That's not a hole, but part of the design of the body armor. I remember getting the page and going "wait what" myself. :D
Stormwind13 25th May 2016, 5:05 AM edit delete reply

I get the impression that time has effectively stopped for Kali in the last panel. The hope for Nova Roma's future lies (dead or dying) upon the ground. What is Kali thinking? What is she feeling?

Back on page Report (30 November 2012) Kali STATES that Acantha IS Nova Roma's future. Now that future won't come to pass, what will she do? Will she fight her inhibitor the way Malati did or move to save Douchimus, salvage something from this trainwreck?

Aeneas has no working medical facility's..,
highlander55 25th May 2016, 1:04 PM edit delete reply

Maybe Acantha was part of the contingency but was not aware of that fact.
Centcomm 26th May 2016, 4:22 PM edit delete reply

She isnt..
Morituri 25th May 2016, 1:41 PM edit delete reply
I suspect that Acantha knows down to the center of her bones that Decimus had to die, and can have no regret that it was by her own hand.

At the same time - Daaammmn. Psychopathic jerk or not, that was her brother whom she's known her whole life and emotionally speaking, taking him down had to hurt bad.

If she doesn't survive this, that's a damn shame, and she won't get to lead Nova Roma out of darkness. But she did her crucial part.

And though all lies in peril, the wheels are set in motion. Aeneas can come on line in time to stop the contingencies; Maxus can establish an honorable rule of law in Nova Roma out of darkness as its next imperator.

So if her time has come I think Acantha's life certainly has not been wasted.
Centcomm 26th May 2016, 4:22 PM edit delete reply

And another anagram from left field:

"AHAB NERO SAMSON" = "SANE BASH ON ROMA"

Thus are all the secrets of the universe revealed. If CentComm had decoded this sooner, we would never have gotten to this situation. ^_^
Gilrandir 25th May 2016, 2:04 PM edit delete reply
Or maybe it's "ROMA BASH ON SANE", English lacks the declensions of Latin, so it can be tough to tell.
KarToon12 25th May 2016, 2:28 PM edit delete reply

Strangely enough, I'm still not too worried about her. If they have the technology to help a woman walk again, and to bring a gun-ho boyfriend back from the dead after being shot a bunch of times, they can save her (provided they get her assistance in time).
Gilrandir 25th May 2016, 3:09 PM edit delete reply
True enough, and what will be will be. However, we should recall that Kyle came pre-loaded with magical nanobots of unknown origin and capabilities, while Acantha ...

Well, we just don't know what may be running around Acantha's system, or what Aeneas may have been slipping into her on the side.
Visvires 25th May 2016, 8:00 PM edit delete reply
Aeneas, as he was, would probably have installed a muffin button. A wonderful countermeasure to starvation, but not very practical during violent political upheaval.

In order to see comics about Acantha's "muffin button", we'd have to get access to those _other_ pictures in File 70 (or whatever it was called). ^_^

No, I figure we'll be going back to New Troy to watch the Security Squad Players perform "Waiting For Godot" on Calliope's landing stage since we haven't heard from Vinnie and the gang for awhile.

ohhhh that is a fantastic idea....

Only if you want death by spiky ball of hate, Cent. (And by me saying that, hopefully you won't have to experience a 24/7 week of 'colorful euphemisms' from Rose...)

The spiky ball of death helped write this scene ya know..

Yes, but she's mentioned on previous pages about the horror of having to get into drekhead's, umm, "mind" with regard to writing for him. I'm sure this has been her favorite page featuring him to date...which is why I said that in regards to doing a series of flashback pages of drekhead's life flashing before his eyes...

It really does seem too bad that you weren't a couple of months faster to reach this point, allowing this to be posted on Wed, 30 March 2016 and then post an epic April Fools for Friday.

That would've been some masterclass evil authoring.

Oh, that needn't stop them.

Well sure, they could do an extra long comic tomorrow which features every single introduced character to show what they're doing at this exact instant (with all of them doing completely mudane and uninteresting things, with a possible exception of a minor gag for the last one). Then announce that there won't be a comic Monday in celebration of the US Memorial Day holiday.

My only issue is with her arm in the place it is on the last page, the knife would have gone right through her forearm before it went into her chest. Still would have gone into the chest though...

He had his other arm to knock it out of the way.

She tried to fend him off but he simply crushed her arm against her chest and had the blade above her arm.

It was then, that Dolly and Kali realized, THEY F***ED UP.

Kali, upon seeing what happened to Acantha, became the first android in history to spark for a second time, burning away the code that had been controlling her for so many generations.

Ceci, upon seeing Lynn attacked, Acantha stabbed, and Mommy getting beaten up, grabs Watchdog by the scruff, drags it out back, and puts it down like Ol' Yeller. Then, she projects herself on every screen in Nova Roma, and tells everyone to stop fighting, or else! She leaves the screens running on a loop of every nuclear mushroom cloud that's ever been recorded.

Ceci then tears herself loose from Aeneas, and breaks the sound barrier, running down the tunnel towards Mommy. She gives Lynn and Mommy each a small dose of nanites, to heal their wounds, but skips Acantha, as Aeneas has been feeding her nanite enriched cookies, for years. Ceci then walks up to Decimus, and knees his balls up into his throat. Literally.

Everyone else turns in shock, when they hear the knife handle clatter to the floor. Acantha's body jolts violently, then goes limp. It jolts again, and then draws a deep breath. Acantha coughs, opens her eyes, and says, "Ouch! That hurt!"

Lynn says, "What? WHAT? W - T - F just happened?!? And, where is the knife blade?"

Ceci replies, "Aeneas' cookie nanites put Acantha all back together again, and they made some chain mail armor for her insides from the knife blade."

Acantha griped, "Why the heck didn't they fix me before, all the times Deck beat the crap out of me?"

Ceci replied, "You were never dead before."

Dolly asked, "What about the contingencies?"

Ceci said, "Oh, I turned those off. Aeneas records everything that happens in Nova Roma. He was just too broke to do anything about it."

Then, all the ladies gathered around Decimus, and stomped his carcass into a paste.
