You two are under arrest for breaking the laws of Story Continuity. Double Cliff Hanger much, there is NO punishment great enough to make restitution for what you have done here.
xpacetrue 21st Jun 2016, 9:16 PM edit delete reply

You tell 'em, Dragonrider! :D
TheSkulker 21st Jun 2016, 10:36 PM edit delete reply

My thoughts exactly!

Just when we were appreciating a short breathing spell from ever escalating cliffhangers it turns out that that was just a ruse to set us up for an even worse double-dare-you shot. And it is only Wednesday. Friday's is still to come.

The evil duo had better be careful. This is pushing the limits of how much our hearts and bodies can survive. Not going to do much for readership numbers after we all keel over. I know I, for one, will make them pay and come back to haunt them (... and to read the rest of the story!)
Stormwind13 22nd Jun 2016, 8:40 AM edit delete reply

Friday Acantha goes into cardiac arrest, one (or more) of the Three Treasures gets booted from the system as CeCi cuts their connection. Oh and Aeneas collapses from the strain of fending off the spike (plus dealing with Acantha's injury and possibile demise). Monday the contingencies will start to kill people off, most likely. :-p

Oh, how can they hear that cry?
HiFranc 21st Jun 2016, 9:17 PM edit delete reply

Because Aeneas and Rose have hacked in to the palace computers to listen in. Also Acantha has Aeneas's ring.
Wolfsbane 21st Jun 2016, 11:06 PM edit delete reply

Of course. After he took her to the prom, it was the natural next step. ^_^
HiFranc 22nd Jun 2016, 12:31 AM edit delete reply

Being serious, Aeneas strikes me more of a step father (or grandfather) to Acantha.
Sheela 22nd Jun 2016, 12:04 PM edit delete reply

Alternatively, it's Aeneas saying that.
In which case, things are about to go bad.
JackOfClubs 22nd Jun 2016, 1:43 PM edit delete reply

I'm pretty sure it is Aeneas. Look at the color coding of the speech bubble and compare with the previous page. Also, in the real world, several people shouted Acantha's name, but no one said "No, no..."
Centcomm 23rd Jun 2016, 12:56 PM edit delete reply

Yes its Aeneas - This moment in time is where Acantha was stabbed.
xpacetrue 21st Jun 2016, 9:15 PM edit delete reply

Keep in mind: Ceci is an android, in a physical body, on-site, with a hard connection. This gives her advantages, true. But, while she's playing assassin in cyberspace, I suspect her body is a more-or-less prone target. If nothing else, someone could sever her cable or damage whatever console she is plugged into.

If only someone had at least rudimentary control of a repair droid in her vicinity...
Dragonrider 21st Jun 2016, 9:22 PM edit delete reply

Again I suspect Ceci has a self destruct package that would obliterate the complex if Centcomm's plans are not completed. Self destruct and scorched earth seem to be popular options for problem solving in this future.
xpacetrue 21st Jun 2016, 9:34 PM edit delete reply

The equivalent to a tactical nuke? Please!

There's no way Ceci contains an explosive powerful enough to destroy the entire complex, for several reasons:

1) Ceci was scanned for weapons, along with the rest of the guests. (Ceci did inform Kagami that she had built-in weapons, but agreed to keep them powered down.)

2) Ceci's body was already jam-packed with whatever stuff CentComm thought would improve her chances of success, and had to quote, "cheat a little" to get it to all fit.
Dragonrider 21st Jun 2016, 9:56 PM edit delete reply

@spacetrue: her clothing, which has remained untouched, and her skin could be a Semtex derivative, the "cheat a little" could well be components made of explosive material all disguised as harmless to get past scans and inspections. Remember Centcomm has a great deal of "dirty tricks" from the former US Arsenal to draw from.
Gilrandir 21st Jun 2016, 10:48 PM edit delete reply
Her clothing could, theoretically, be some kind of explosive compound -- although that seems likely to have been trivial to detect with a normal weapon scan, even if it didn't get prematurely detonated during all the fighting earlier. (Yes, I know that C4 -- for example -- is wonderfully stable from kinetic shocks, but easily detonated with electricity. However CeCi and Dolly were being targeted by a variety of both projectile and energy weaponry as they fought through squads and squads of Praetorians. The likelihood of some kind of mishap along the way seems too great for that to really be plausible. At least not without magic epiphyte explosives.)

However, her skin really shouldn't be explosive. We saw big holes blown and burned in the skin which her nano-repair bots spent time patching up. She burned through the skin on her own hand with her plasma caster. Again, unless the skin is made of magic epiphyte explosives that only go off when you want them to, it doesn't seem very plausible. In my opinion, anyway.
xpacetrue 21st Jun 2016, 11:46 PM edit delete reply

Actually, we got a glimpse of what Cent meant by "cheat a little" when Ceci used her plasma-casters in her palms for the first time in that watering hole showdown (after Dolly roughed up her bounty). Using her plasma casters gave her hands really nasty burns. Her configuration is far from standard even for a black angel. No doubt, she has a few other quirks.

I'm reminded of role-playing games where you can try to fit extra stuff into a given space in a mecha or robot chasis, but the odds of things malfunctioning or performing bad goes up.
Centcomm 23rd Jun 2016, 12:57 PM edit delete reply

Ceci does not have explosive skin or anything. She does have a fusion power core that would make a pretty big bang. But thats it.
DLKmusic 21st Jun 2016, 9:22 PM edit delete reply

I have never gotten a satisfactory answer as to why Cent hates Kyle so much. I'm getting the feeling that I will be getting that answer soon!
Dragonrider 21st Jun 2016, 9:28 PM edit delete reply

He plans to take Lynn out of New Troy to his home and get her out of Centcomm's control envelope. Lynn wants to be a space pilot however with her heritage Centcomm can easily block her license for that profession and force her into a virtual golden prison in New Troy.
Stormwind13 22nd Jun 2016, 6:09 AM edit delete reply

CentComm (Actual) really doesn't care about Kyle one way or the other. CentComm (the artist) HATES Kyle with a BURNING passion.

Why? Doesn't seem to have a reason that can articulate. Just doesn't care for the character at ALL.
Sheela 22nd Jun 2016, 12:07 PM edit delete reply

Because he manages to be both essential to the story *and* an hero.
DLKmusic 22nd Jun 2016, 1:15 PM edit delete reply

I'm guessing the answer will be revealed in the next few pages, as he "foils her evil plot to take over the world", as it were....

I liked Kyle from when he was first introduced, when he stood up for Dolly with Lynn.

Next few pages, and I'll be able to say "Called it!" I would never do anything as crass as that, of course, because I'm a gentleman....

I am now looking out to avoid any Cassians that Cent the artist might send my way, and for Lightning bolt that the LORD might be sending my way. if anyone needs me I will be in hiding!
Centcomm 23rd Jun 2016, 12:57 PM edit delete reply

I hate.. Kyle.. so .. so very much..
Sheela 23rd Jun 2016, 1:09 PM edit delete reply

Hey centcomm, I have a great idea !
We could kill Kyle ... again! :D
Speedy Marsh 3rd Apr 2017, 2:26 PM edit delete reply
Uh oh! If Kyle heard that shout in the last panel, He might realize that Lynn is in peril, and ditch his job again to save her. That would give Ceci another advantage, and make Kyle very hate worthy.
Dragonrider 21st Jun 2016, 9:49 PM edit delete reply

The one possibly bright part of this scenario, there is absolutely NO*crosses fingers* way the evil doublemint twins here would would allow Acantha to flat line completely while solely in New Troy care and keeping. She is way too popular with the general public and the Senate.
Stormwind13 22nd Jun 2016, 8:54 AM edit delete reply

Oh you think not, Dragonrider? You still think that SOMEONE will survive the coming pages? :-P
Howard 21st Jun 2016, 11:04 PM edit delete reply
What was the point of having us get to know Cecil and for her to gain sentience if you was just gonna shut her off like a switch and then be used as a pawn and sacrificial lamb by cent com?

HiFranc 22nd Jun 2016, 12:29 AM edit delete reply

Aeneas: If Acantha comes to harm through your actions, black angel, no place will be safe from my wrath!
Timotheus 22nd Jun 2016, 12:33 AM edit delete reply

It is likely that at least the first third (if not more) of the story is being revised and rewritten. We therefore have no real knowledge of what these characters are going to have been portrayed as by the time they reach the point they are now. This makes any judgement as to the actions of the characters now based on their previous personalities rather moot. (For example, most of the evidence I had seen for what I though were going to be later plot developments has all been eliminated from the story line, leaving me with...?)

Centcomm 23rd Jun 2016, 12:59 PM edit delete reply

yeeeah- more points will be revealed as we go. But .. dang it I cnt say more at this point.
Sheela 23rd Jun 2016, 1:10 PM edit delete reply

The eggs will be remembered!
Hana 22nd Jun 2016, 1:33 AM edit delete reply
I personally vote for Rose's design from the previous page over this one. Not that that means much anyways.

I thinks that's Aeneas' voice crying out, like he somehow caught Acantha's fatal moment.
Stormwind13 22nd Jun 2016, 5:35 AM edit delete reply

I think you are right Hana. Aeneas has tried to keep tabs on Acantha so I think he caught Acantha being stabbed. He could be fatally distracted by her demise too. Aeneas is the only one physically on-site so he HAD the best chance to match Not CeCi's speed in the net.
chk 22nd Jun 2016, 10:18 AM edit delete reply

I'm thinking he picked up on Acantha killing Deckface before he's ready to deal with the contingencies.
Stormwind13 22nd Jun 2016, 10:47 AM edit delete reply

Hmmm... possibly chk. I will point out Acantha went down before Kali lit Douchimus' funeral pyre (and quite possibly Nova Roma's).
Timotheus 22nd Jun 2016, 11:12 AM edit delete reply

If it helps, the word balloon is surrounded by what appears to be Aenea's dark red from the previous page.
Centcomm 23rd Jun 2016, 12:59 PM edit delete reply

yes its Aeneas talking there.
Visvires 22nd Jun 2016, 11:42 AM edit delete reply
Kyle is there, too. Maybe Kyle will redeem himself? Finally get something impressive done on his own instead of fumbling and zombie-rushing his way into position through the efforts of Rose-tachi. ... Aeneas is dead.
Sheela 22nd Jun 2016, 12:11 PM edit delete reply

Don't forget that he gave her a shiny that would tell him if she died.
Tokyo Rose 22nd Jun 2016, 4:18 PM edit delete reply

Rose's design from the previous pages was actually an accident. Cent was using the wrong facial texture; I personally dislike it because it makes her look so utterly washed out.
Gilrandir 22nd Jun 2016, 11:48 AM edit delete reply
My sympathy vote is that Aeneas is misinterpreting the 'warm stasis' as Acantha's vital signs dropping to zero and her 'dying'.

However, if you really wanted to go with nuanced timing, this could be Aeneas reacting to Decimus' initial knife thrust as the opening movement to a symphony of synchronized pain reaching its crescendo as both Decimus and Aeneas simultaneously go up in pyres, one virtual and one actual -- following which we get the reprise of the '1812 Overture' played out on the streets of Nova Roma with real cannons. ^_^

Look! Aeneas! That Black Angel over there! She's wearing a mask! Rip it off her!
Sheela 22nd Jun 2016, 12:11 PM edit delete reply

He gave her a ring that could read her lifesigns.
Gilrandir 22nd Jun 2016, 1:29 PM edit delete reply
Yup. And, "heart rate zero, blood pressure zero, respiration rate zero" could look a lot like "dead" to Aeneas, even if those readings are normal for someone in a super-advanced medical stasis. Honestly I have no idea what Lynn's signs currently indicate because I don't know how Ada's Kit of Despair works. If it starts showing "core temp minus 200 degrees" is that going to appear to the ring as "hibernation" or "sensor error: reading out of limits"?

Just going to have to wait and see. ^_^

Alternatively, if it's a webcam equivalent, maybe that means he got to _watch_ as Decimus stabbed Acantha. Also sheds new light on all those times she showered while wearing the ring, eh? ^_^
Dragonrider 22nd Jun 2016, 4:21 PM edit delete reply

You are a filthy man with a dirty, perverted mind.
Gilrandir 22nd Jun 2016, 5:30 PM edit delete reply
That kind of flattery will turn a man's head. ^_^
Dragonrider 22nd Jun 2016, 9:23 PM edit delete reply

It wasn't flattery.
Gilrandir 22nd Jun 2016, 9:35 PM edit delete reply
Oh? If I offended, I apologize. I indulge in entendre because I hope to amuse and the World's Oldest Funny Subject provides fertile material in abundance. Based on overall tone and tenor, here, I thought my jests appropriate, if occasionally verging on the 'earthy'. But I have no wish to make anyone truly irate or uncomfortable. Please forgive me for going too far, and if anyone else objects, please let me know, so I can moderate my tone accordingly.
DLKmusic 22nd Jun 2016, 9:50 PM edit delete reply

well said, Gilrandir, very nice apology.

I'm somewhat of a prude, and I didn't take offense, but it is nice to see someone pull the reigns back and apologize once in a while.

Dude, we may argue on certain points, but you always have my respect. even more so now!
Gilrandir 22nd Jun 2016, 9:58 PM edit delete reply
Thank you for the kind words and the feedback. I admit, I thought the above comment comparatively innocuous and don't understand why it provoked the personal attack -- especially compared to other prior comments of mine. Maybe @Dragonrider just reached the end of his patience with me -- in which case I should thank him for putting up with me as long as he did.
Dragonrider 22nd Jun 2016, 11:58 PM edit delete reply

@Gilrandir raised an abused teenage foster daughter reason I took offense about the comment about Aeneas watching Acantha shower. That is a sore subject for me, apology accepted sorry for getting salty in public should have gone to IM not forum.
Gilrandir 23rd Jun 2016, 5:19 AM edit delete reply
Ah. (Clarification: I think you mean that you raised ..., not that I raised ... Just to avoid any misunderstandings.)

Well I certainly didn't mean to provoke such a sensitive subject. Please do allow me to state, for the record, that I would never condone or support such abuse, especially from one who owes a duty of care and protection. Because it isn't as personal for me, I might joke about such matters occasionally, but I will make every effort not to do so here. And if I slip and fail, please understand it is not with malicious intent and I will accept correction on the topic with (I hope) good grace.
Centcomm 23rd Jun 2016, 1:00 PM edit delete reply

Umm im glad you guys settled this. remember Acantha is 16.. so no thinking sexy about her!
Sheela 23rd Jun 2016, 1:14 PM edit delete reply

More to the point, Aeneas is an AIS, I'm not even sure if humans register on the "sexy" scale for him.

Maybe a really nice motherboard is what does it for him!
Gilrandir 23rd Jun 2016, 5:09 PM edit delete reply
Aeneas has mommy issues?
KarToon12 22nd Jun 2016, 7:18 PM edit delete reply

For some reason, with everyone practically color coded, they look like they're forming the Power Rangers on this page. XD
Tokyo Rose 23rd Jun 2016, 5:32 AM edit delete reply

The Treasures (and Tokyo Rose) were deliberately given single-color motifs *because* it's an anime trope. :D It was really fun to watch how Cent worked with their visuals.
Gilrandir 23rd Jun 2016, 6:23 AM edit delete reply
So, technically, that would make Kyle the Black Ranger (stealth suit), and Aeneas the Pink Ranger?

Remember that, when it comes to anime costume choices, those who live by the Zord, dye by the Zord.
Centcomm 23rd Jun 2016, 1:01 PM edit delete reply

heh.. blame rose.
Sheela 23rd Jun 2016, 1:15 PM edit delete reply

So .. Aeneas dies by the pink ?
Centcomm 23rd Jun 2016, 1:27 PM edit delete reply

Timotheus 23rd Jun 2016, 10:27 AM edit delete reply

Do you mean Trojan Horse of a different color?
(might as well mix movies while I'm at it)
