TERRI'S CURRENT STATUS: Got through the surgery like a champ. Two blood vessels were taken from the right leg, and another one already present in the chest (the name of it escapes me) was re-routed to serve as the third replacement. Vitals are very strong and stable. She's resting in the CV ICU recovery area for observation, and provided she does well overnight, she will be moved to a room sometime tomorrow.
UPDATE: Terri was indeed moved out of the CV ICU and into a private room on Wednesday afternoon. Apparently, it is practically unheard-of for a bypass patient to be taken off a mechanical ventilator, much less moved out of CV ICU, at 1 day post-op; Terri is bouncing back very strongly. There was some concern regarding renal function, since she has a catheter in and there wasn't much urine output, but they had her drinking lots of water* on Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday, and they're satisfied that everything's working.
The surgery was done WITHOUT putting her on a heart-lung machine; her heart did not have to be stopped at any point.
I brought her purse with her cell phone and tablet PC to her on Wednesday afternoon just before they moved her to the private room. I visited her again early this morning, and she says that while she really loves reading all your comments and good wishes, she feels very bad that she's not coordinated enough at this point to use the tablet's USB keyboard or on-screen keyboard to answer herself. She IS reading them, though, and hopes that nobody's upset she isn't really able to reply much just yet.
* They were having her drink the water, instead of just giving IV fluids, because they wanted to be sure that the entire tract and renal cycle was functioning properly.
Well there isn't exactly a good connection there if I recall correctly. If I were designing Ceci, I would probably put such a thing as the spike in a storage device separate from the main brain and stick it somewhere out of the way. Like the stomach or something.
It kind of reminds me of 42.zip - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zip_bomb
Although this seems to be somewhat more useful. Besides for this a simple zerofill or fill with random data would suffice.
Actually random data is worse because it doesn't compress as well. Now an entire file of one character that compresses really well the downside to it is that you need more space available on the creation system then there is on the target system for a zip bomb. One way around that is the add the same file with slightly different names multiple times to the same as it and then let it extract. Of course the one downside to something simple like that is very often filling the desk doesn't stop other applications from running it just causes them to run very slowly. Windows for instance fails when you run out of disk space. I normally setup Unix box will not unless you do something stupid and write where you're not supposed to
So was the Spikes program loaded onto the Doomsday program which overloaded it and shut it down? Anyway, it's down and New Roma is saved. Now Acantha needs to be saved.
OK the doomsday program seems halted, Cent can't fully expand and Clone herself Number two question of the hour is, can Ceci extract herself or is she stuck in there? Number 1 question prognosis for Teri.
Given that it's a stand alone system, she is stuck there. I doubt Rose would reconnect to that system because there may not be a way to extract her without opening the door to the payload.
you see, there is an easy way to get her out. Unplug her physically.
She's not actually 'there' that is just the representation of where her program is focused. It's not like there isn't a Ceci in Ceci's head anymore.
Me three! Was hard to focus on 'work', as it was all routine stuff and not nearly as important as Terri's health! I continually was having to go back and fix things, I was so distracted.
I would first like to say that I am very glad to hear that @CentComm has done so well so far and that the prognosis appears encouraging.
I would next like to compliment @CentComm for getting through a difficult, frightening and sudden challenge for which I doubt she really felt prepared. My compliments to her and to her medical team for a job well done.
Then I would like to thank @Tokyo Rose and @Marcus Ramesy for their efforts to keep us (meaning me ^_^) informed as the situation unfolded. Like many here, I spent much of the day wondering how it was going and hoping that it was going well. The updates were very much appreciated.
Finally, I would like to encourage @CentComm to take as much time as she needs to recover her full health and well-being. I am sure you don't need me to emphasize the importance of following the post-op care instructions of your medical team, but I will say that I've had family members who did (for other procedures) and family members who didn't. Invariably the ones who did were happier in the long run, so please ... do the right thing here. And please get well soon.
Krissy again many thanks for your updates, Terri is lucky to have you as a friend. Next question does she have someone who can make damn sure she doesn't overdue it during recovery? Please tell her to look at the upside of things;
A. She now has many more years to live and annoy the living hell out of people she dislikes.
B. She has helped to keep the statistics of not loosing one surgeon during a Bypass Operation intact.
Terri will be in the hospital for at least a week, if everything goes well. After that, she'll probably be staying with me for a day or two before going home, where she's got three roomies. :)
YAY!!!! SUCH A RELIEF!! *does goat dance* It looks like I won't be needing this after all... *folds up all-enveloping black cloak* Instead, Dr. Goat's Cybernetic Wizards will celebrate with a performance of "I'm Still Standing" by Elton John!
Dolly: Perhaps we should make it "Cent's Still Standing", for accuracy's sake.
Noctis: I'm not sure the song is entirely appropriate to the situation, anyway.
Malati: And she's not really standing - she's flat on her back! :-)
Goat: It's a figure of speech, Malati.
Vinnie: THIS UNIT DOES NOT UNDERSTAND.
Teedee: It means she's still active, doofus! Now, let's shred some guitar!
Vinnie: UNDERSTOOD. AFFIRMATIVE.
Aeneas: *puts on spangled glasses and blazer, steps up to microphone* Alright! Let's go! *launches into performance of "Cent's Still Active"*
Thank you for the continuing updates, Rose. Sounds like Terri is doing pretty good for all that she has been through. Pass along my well wishes, if you think about it. :-)
2nd, As I understand it, the spike was designed to overwrite everything in the system right down to the lowest level code.
This would not only stop the doomsday programing, it would totally overwrite it.
Since Ceci is only virtually in that system, she would be the equivalent of squeezed out of the system. (it was pretty cramped in there already).
the closest thing I can think of would be like a person running a "bot" on World of Warcraft or other MORPG. If the gaming system shuts down, them bot isn't hurt, just cut off from doing what it was doing.
3rd Once the spike has filled the system, it could try and reach out and start to work on any connected system. It would be like the different nodes in Aeneas's hardware. It would be interesting to have TR having to shut down her cyberpath link as the spike started to expand out through it.
TR "Back, back you *********** spike."
@2nd: yeah - but if you use a unix/linux system you can overwrite the harddisc and the system will still run from memory - until it restarts or needs to reload something important or those important parts of the memory get overwritten...
However bored she may be, I do not think we will see much of her until this weekend. She is probably not going to have much staying power for anything before then.
I am sure Cent will accept 'get well' art should anyone want to send it to her!
righto. just got back from seeing CentComm Actual. definitely more coherent than yesterday. My dad had the same surgery about 5-6 months back, and she is looking better than he did at the same point. in fact, she may get out of the hospital in as soon as a week. normal turnaround is about 2 weeks. she is doing GREAT.
12 years ago, I had the exact same operation: Triple bypass with 2 from leg and 1 chest artery rerouted. Today, I am heathy and strong. Surgeon split my breast bone to get to heart. I understand they may have a new way to get in. It took me 6 months to fully recover. A Hospital volunteer gave me a heavy heart-shaped pillow to hug, because when I coughed, it was really painful. Make sure CentComm gets a heavy pillow to hug. I got lots of pain-killers, but they did not help me much except make it easier to sleep.
I wish CentComm a wonderful, full recovery and hope there are loads of good TV and videos to enjoy.
Hokay. I just got done reading the 105 page backlog that I'd allowed to build up, so I've been out of the loop for a while. It seems I've missed some critical devellopements both in the story and IRL. I presume based on context that "terri" refers to CentComm and "krissy" to Tokyo Rose. I'm glad to hear CentComm's IRL body is still functioning, and I hope she recovers fully, quickly, and with a minimum of discomfort.
I'd probably make some sort of comments about where the story is going, only it's 5:30 AM local and the last 105 pages haven't quite sunk in yet.
[EDIT: in case it wasn't clear: it's 5:30 AM and I haven't slept yet. I didn't just get up.]
[EDIT:P.S. "discomfort" is a euphemism for ludicrously awful agony, in case you weren't sure]
I believe I must point out again that at the time she was planning this, Centcom believed Aenaes to be fully deactivated by the new Romans (ie-deceased). Her actions were intended to attempt to reactivate whatever remained of the new Rome AI system by reloading a new operating system onto it, not killing an existing one. Ceci, the black angel, did not have the option of rationalizing and/or altering the plan based on the circumstances she discovered.
Thank you for the latest update, Rose. I'm relieved that she is doing so well. And totally understand her not replying. When she feels up to it,it will be great to hear (directly) from her. Until then though, she needs to focus on HERSELF! Get feeling better Terri!
Please take care of yourself, Rose. I know that medical problems (hospital stays) take a toll on the support network too.
I've barely eaten since Saturday, and haven't been able to sleep without the use of medication (mostly OTC, fortunately). I'm feeling better since Terri got out of surgery safely.
HUGS. Try and eat, Krissy. Good food too, not just any crap you can find! Get some rest. Terri needs you to be in good shape. She sounds like she is in good hands, so now YOU need to make sure to take care of yourself. Don't need YOU to wind up in the hospital!
I'm not sure she is up to being on the phone much yet. They want her sleeping a lot to help her heal. Maybe Rose will give us a schedule when it is safer to call. :-)
Krissy, just read your update. Thank you so much. Sounds like a miracle to me. This is the BEST and BRIGHTEST news more than could of hoped for. And Krissy and all please look after yourselves as well.
Terri, this may seem silly yet can not stop my eyes from watering as am so thankful that you are doing so well. Please take all the time you need to recuperate as just want you back healthy and whole. Please also take the advice given by your medical team and the amazing comments from the brilliant, thoughtful and informative fellow fans. Remember previously sent some hugs for Krissy to keep in store for you!
My heartfelt prayers are for and to you and yours.

Terri, Glad to hear you are out of ICU. That was fast after only 1 day. Take care and will wait for you to comment on here when stronger and more alert. You take care of yourself too Krissy, Food and sleep are good for both of you now!
...and beautiful...
...but poor Sparky will never be because of the disk-full error...
@alt text: of course... =D
PS: Cent I hope you are fine after waking up and are having a good rest tonight...
I will try to call tonight (about your afternoon)...
ETA: just where was all that data in CeCi's head? Or did she use the connection to d/l the majority of it and all she had was the torrent file for it?
Uh... Let's just say it would have the opposite of the desired effect.
Although this seems to be somewhat more useful. Besides for this a simple zerofill or fill with random data would suffice.
The real question is: what happend to Ceci?
What's the word on Terri? Is she recovering?
Kinda frustrating that one cannot do anything than hope for the best for Terri. But we doo! :)
Hope you are feeling better, Centy!
She's not actually 'there' that is just the representation of where her program is focused. It's not like there isn't a Ceci in Ceci's head anymore.
Think if it like deckers in shadowrun. While force hard booting them from the system does rather rude things to them, they usually live.
EDIT: Emphasis on usually. Sometimes it deep fries their nervous system.
Please tell her we said hi...
...and please let us know when she is back at her room and able to receive calls...
Edit: well, that was a reply to Rose's post before she moved it to the top...
What is Shadowrun?
Let us now reflect on all the dreams and aspirations of poor spikey that will never come to fruition *sniff*.
And while we're doing that, can CeCi come out now, please? now would be a good time!
Nice way to keep in-universe Cent from cloning herself.
I would next like to compliment @CentComm for getting through a difficult, frightening and sudden challenge for which I doubt she really felt prepared. My compliments to her and to her medical team for a job well done.

And dang things move fast, I only left for a few days!
Slow down already. XD

Great news on Terri! Take care. Hope you're feeling better soon!
I hope her recovery is rapid and complete.
Thank you for letting us know!

That's unusual. :D
