TERRI STATUS UPDATE: Terri was actually standing up (with a walker) when Mister Black and I visited tonight. She went on a walk (with a nurse and, again, a walker) around the floor today, and was sitting up on the edge of the bed (not leaning against any support) to talk to us for the better part of an hour. She's on a diuretic to quell fluid build-up and the catheter is still in place, simply because it's easier to manage than getting up several times to visit the bathroom.
She's mentioned that while she's eaten some, everything tastes terrible, although the food was fine prior to the surgery.
She's also receiving periodic respiratory treatment via nebulizer to ensure her lungs remain clear of fluid and pneumonia doesn't set in. Her heart rate went up during the treatment, but the respiratory therapist indicated that an increase by up to 20 bpm is expected, and not anything to worry about.
She feels she overdid the walking a little; when we left, she'd just gotten some painkillers and was settling in to sleep. Overall, she's doing very well. :)
SMALL UPDATE: For those who are curious, she's in room 423 D. Direct phone number is 480 412 6259.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Catheter line is out. Bowels are functioning. (Opiate painkillers can cause constipation, so this was a concern.) Right now, she's mostly grumping about being lonely and how the food all tastes bad. I got clearance to cook up some lean hamburger patties on my Foreman grill and bring them in.
YET ANOTHER UPDATE: Terri may be released from the hospital tomorrow (Sunday). Holy shit, right/
@mjkj and DLKmusic: That is Kyle and if you want to see Ceci go back one page or go to the vote incentive. I'm afraid we have see the last of our sexy little darling when the Disc in Douchebag's system filled with the Centcomm overwrite She ceased to exist. Her physical chasis is inert and only good for parts. She knew this going in and that is the reason for the farewell apology. Damn I hope I am so wrong.
How would the stick get write permissions on her physical chasis? Chances are good that she's still in there. Possibly in a dormant state, pending return of her active core (or spark, I suppose). She might need a defrib, though.
That's Kyle, using the exact same text and balloon style as Kyle's had during the entire cybersequence. This is where I get to blame the cast page for not having the right avatar for Deep Blue.
There's another loose end floating around that I'm hoping we'll get an answer to as well...
What the hell happened to Democlus? When Prince Hubris got to him, his body was gone, and that question has never been answered.
Oh, and I saw you posting on the last page, Terri! Glad you're feeling a little better, but please, please PLEASE don't push yourself too hard. Get well soon!!!
I'm noticing a distinct similarity between the situation regarding Democlus and that regarding Kyle immediately after his assassination attempt. Perhaps there is still hope?
Proof positive that @CentComm doesn't hate Kyle as much as she says she does. ^_^. If she really hated him, the default for the Cyberspace User Interface Personal Avatar would be something offensively cute like a moogle (from Final Fantasy X) ... Or maybe chibi-Kyle, instead of just "ball of glowy light". ^_^ Maybe Aeneas can be persuaded to give his avatar an "instant makeover", now that the imminent threat of death has been temporarily reduced. My Little Pony-Kyle introduced as canon?
"I was going to help Tokyo Rose repair Aeneas, but by the time I got out of the character creation screen, it was all over. On the other hand, I really like what I did with my avatar's hair -- what do you think?"
Good to hear the patient is doing well. The bad news is, the taste issue is due to the anathesia, it messes with the taste buds. Took a couple of weeks to settle down in my case. It also does weird things to memory and recall. This is probably a good time to stay off the shopping channel.
To be honest, I'm surprised at all this. I thought you guys were in your 20's. :)
I'm slightly buzzing at 1AM the night before work, so yeah, there's that.
I am SO grateful for you both, and grateful for this community that's arisen around a comic strip.
Much love, and well wishes to Terri, of course, and to all who love her in that personal way of family and dear friends. But also to all of you out there, who through this strip, have given me (and others, I hope) some measure of hope and joy to each other as reading your words has to me.
I'm not much of a believer in anything divine, but you all are shining examples of what we people can do in words and action both, and I'm grateful.
Rose, Terri, Mr. Black, and all of you - thank you. May your lives be full of laughter, love, and most importantly, GREAT health from this day forward. Thank you all, each, for being the people you all are, because this world we live in would be a sadder, darker, un-happier place without you.
Much love from here. (And no, I'm not the drunk 'I-love-you-man' type.) :)
Food will taste strange for Terri for about 2-3 weeks after her surgery. At least it did for me when they did my spinal fusion. I was told it's an after affect of the anesthesia and until all of it gets out of her system her sense of taste will be affected.
Think about it this way, you have worked with old multi partition drives right?
Okay, so let's simplify and not worry about the exact uses of the drive letters traditionally since it has been a LONG time since I actually did that.
Aeneas and his stuff is the A, B, C, and D partitions. The kill switch is an E partition or perhaps even a center drive. Ceci is best likened to a flash drive, which guessing at the setup would be something like the J drive. Well, the spike just got deployed into the E partition, and overwrote the entire thing. But it only got deployed there, every other drive or partition, including Ceci's J will be unaffected.
I have actually used computers with enough USB hookup points and internal drive partitions to go up an a P drive before. I've never used past J though.
I have also reformatted single partitions while running the reformat from another part of the drive, or another drive entirely. The latter is highly preferable as it moves far, far faster since the computer doesn't have to switch between places on the same drive. Pretty much every time all the drives I wasn't reformatting were unaffected save one incident where the hard disk in the drive itself actually cracked during the reformatting as it was old and already damaged and the constant running of the reformat was too much for it.
Now, the worst that could happen to Ceci at this point is that she could not remember the incident of spike deployment, as, due to the nature of Rose's cyberpathic intervention, Ceci was actually reinstated on her own "J drive" rather than as part of the extension of the program operating in A through E.
@CptKerion, that would seem to presume that CeCi is a software-only entity, and therefore capable of multiple redundant copies. If CeCi is on the J: drive you could copy 'her' to the E: drive, then delete E:/CeCi, leaving J:/CeCi unaffected. But, you could also copy E:/CeCi back to a K: drive (if you had one available). Then, even after deleting E:/CeCi, you have J:/CeCi and K:/CeCi both running.
I get the impression that android persons are not so easily replicated, even though they can (apparently) be backed up. I haven't figured that part out, yet. However, the impression I get is that the one-and-only CeCi is meant to be at risk at this point in the story -- though whether or not she has been lost is yet to be revealed. (As always, the preceding are only my opinions. Your mileage may vary. Only the creatrices know for sure.)
If we assume that the data comprising androids is not the special variant of quantum information that can only ever exist in a single instance, or if we assume that synth-brains work in even vaguely similar fashion to either organic brains, hard disk drives or flash drives, then data is not destroyed upon being read. Conventional wisdom would suggest that, if an AI needs to operate on a system remote from it's physical primary (ie the system in which it normally resides), it would copy all relevant personality and operating data into a datastream aimed at the target system (with redundant parity to ensure accuracy), then wait for confirmation of receipt. Only once it has confirmed that the core is operating at the destination would it send any last snippets of data (such as any experience from during the transfer) and enter a dormant state (AI core inactive), until the active core returns to the physical primary, at which point any interim experience data would be reincorporated into the AI's personality and the core would be reactivated.
If the above suppositions are more or less correct, then if Ceci's core was destroyed on a remote system, the dormant core is still present on her physical primary, and awaiting reactivation (which is something our friends from NT S&R can probably do). She wouldn't remember anything from her time in the AIS (which could be problematic), but she'd be only Mostly Dead. There's a big difference between Mostly Dead and All Dead.
This all does bring up interesting questions about what role Watchdog and DAS play when operating in a remote system. One would presume that they operate in a fashion that is separate from, but connected to, the main AI core, just as they do in her physical primary. If that were the case, Aenaes could probably tweak her kind of like he tweaked Rose. But maybe not. IDK
Good good. All good news so far on surgery front. Keep it up. \o/ Now. can we plEASE have a Sheppard walks out of the wreckage moment for CeCi.Pu-pu-pu-puh-puhleasssse? Skexis make peace with gelfling.
The respirometer thing may last a while. When my mom had a triple by-pass, she actually had to bring it home with her and breathe into it a certain # of times a day for a couple weeks, I think.
The food may taste terrible to her for a while and her sense of smell may (or may not) be off. It's a side effect of a combination of the painkillers and especially the anesthesia. It will wear off before she leaves the hospital. Happens after any major surgery, I know from experience.
Glad to hear things are going well. I just got outta heart surgery myself. While scary... the doctors appear to really know what they're doing these days... Heh, my only advice is, when they give you the pulmonary torture device that you have to use every hour... use it.
Just got off the phone with Terri. She's doing well but is having difficulties getting sleep as there are lots of people passing through.
It turns out that she had the full traditional bypass surgery - cut sternum and cracked ribs. I mistook the beating heart mode comment to mean minimally invasive surgery but, unfortunately, not so. This means a longer and more painful recovery.
I suspect that Terri is going to try and get back in the saddle way too quickly. We are all going to have to keep admonishing her to back off. It's time for her to (deservedly), rest on her laurels for a while. The next arc of DC can wait until she is fully recovered and we will all still be here whenever that is. In the meantime, rereading and discussing 1400 strips alone can take a while but be well worth it. Taking the time to (re)read all the earlier comments can keep us entertained for months.
Terri is planning on making a big thank you banner for the hospital staff after she gets home. It would be nice if we could surprise her with a big "Welcome Home" banner for when she gets home but I don't know how to surprise her when she can read these comments.
I can all but GUARANTEE that Terri will try to do too much, too quickly. I wish we could hire someone to sit on her, LITERALLY. About the only way to keep her from overdoing it. :-7
A few days ago we were discussing CeCi's outfit and I suggested that it was not that extreme compared to what is worn in RL.
Just in case there are any doubters here is one RL dress (of many), that might raise a few eyebrows:
http://kdn.ozar.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/042816_1529_24CELEBSCAU10.jpg
I personally think that CeCi fills out her outfit much better than this "celeb".
Well that outfit actually covers ALL of the woman's body (not arms and head). There appears to be some nearly transparent material in the spaces her skin shows through. So they aren't exactly analogous. I know I have seen costumes at conventions, as well as walking down the Vegas strip that show more skin then CeCi's outfit though. :-D
Yes, it covers most of her legs and yes, there is a (nearly) invisible mesh(?) holding it together but while not identical, it certainly is analogous to CeCi's exposure. In RL, CeCi's would also require some sort of mesh to her her outfit together as well.
Anyway, my post was not to dispute details but to illustrate that (as you said), there are some pretty outrageous exhibitions walking the streets.
I'm not sure either of those outfits has ANY hope of surviving activity more strenuous than walking around and having your picture taken; however, NEITHER of those had anything but flesh in the spaces (there is a single strip of cellophane holding the top together on the first one, if you look closely... which I did! =D ). And the ladies in question apparently had faith enough that their costumes wouldn't fail to go out into a crowd of tens of thousands dressed that way. :-)
Terri called me to ask me to clarify/expand on this. She's been visited very regularly by phlebotomists over the past week, and has a sort of love/hate relationship with them in general--her arms have been perforated so frequently that they're having a harder and harder time finding a vein to draw from, which makes for less and less goodwill on both sides of the equation.
Terri noticed one of the phlebotomists sort of hanging around just outside her room, and asked if she was there to do another blood draw. The phlebotomist said, "No, I'm just playing Pokemon Go... there's a Pokemon in your room, and I'm trying to catch it." (Terri did not think to ask what type of Pokemon it was, but apparently it was pretty neat.)
Yes, I've been concerned about that as well. To go home after less than one week post full open sternum surgery seems very short. When I was originally scheduled for that surgery I was told one - two weeks in the hospital followed by tow - four weeks in rehab. Terri has roommates who will help her but they are not the same as trained medical personnel with appropriate equipment. Especially ones with enough "authority" to keep her in check from over exertion.
When I spoke with Terri a couple days ago she said, with lack of conviction, she was going to take me time. I hope Krissy has a big enough whip to keep her from overdoing it. Dammit the next Arch can wait a few extra weeks we ain't going anywhere and it's for sure Kali, Douchie,Nox and several others ain't going anywhere so just keep calm, as cool as Arizona allows and don't argue politics with anyone.
Soon home will be where the heart-shaped pillow is ^_^
I think it is cute that you have proved so effective a Pokemon lure that one of the phlebotomists is following you home.
Digidex: "CentComm. The clockwork Pokemon. This electrical Pokemon is easily identified by her pink hair and stealth missile turrets. Dislikes battling directly, preferring to get others to battle on her behalf, but capable of devastating attacks when cornered."
So, why are Tokyo Rose and Aeneas speaking in synchronized fashion here before the access permissions revert, but they did not seem to be after the access permissions were granted before CeCi was dispatched into the Contingencies Databank? (Comic 1390 -- Access Granted and on.)
Looks like he's talking in 1395 & 1397. Also, Rose's balloons don't have the mixed font and case of merge-speak, which I presume was to avoid giving it away until the merge-reveal could happen in 1400. Just wondering if there were some in-story reason and Rose didn't have to do merge-speak, she was just doing it to tweak Aeneas or something like that.
Tokyo Rose and Aeneas had very urgent things to focus on at first, which held them apart. With the pressure of a saboteur Black Angel and the threat of an assassinating spike gone, this page indicates that they were starting to merge into a temporary gestalt before the access permissions were revoked.
You don't really have to understand it, though. As long as you keep it consistent, you can let others work it out. Mostly. It's far more important that you remain able to understand your own computer, so that you can continue to give us excellent art.
Is that Deep Blue or Kyle? Oh, seems to be Kyle because I do not think Deep Blue would curse like that...
Wow, they are so relaxed - but I can not see CeCi...?
Edited.
and I'm right there with you... WHERE'S CECI!!!!
(Waves at Cent and Rose.)
What did you two do?!?
Now that you mention it - the cast page needs to be updated, some pictures (TR) changed and some overlayed with a deceased stamp...
What the hell happened to Democlus? When Prince Hubris got to him, his body was gone, and that question has never been answered.
Oh, and I saw you posting on the last page, Terri! Glad you're feeling a little better, but please, please PLEASE don't push yourself too hard. Get well soon!!!
I'm pretty sure the talking blue circle is Kyle. He doesn't have an avatar like the others.
"I was going to help Tokyo Rose repair Aeneas, but by the time I got out of the character creation screen, it was all over. On the other hand, I really like what I did with my avatar's hair -- what do you think?"
And thanks for the status update as well.

"5" this month, so all you need is someone to sign up for the "00"s, right?

Terri, do NOT overdo it. Please. Remember Irene - More Haste, Less Speed. Pushed herself too far too quickly. Learn from her example. :-)
And to explain for Kyle, Ahab got ate by a Moby dick of a move by centcomm that ceci repurposed!
Well done! :)
Rose did they give Terri an official room yet (with a number) or is she still in IC?
The food may taste terrible to her for a while and her sense of smell may (or may not) be off. It's a side effect of a combination of the painkillers and especially the anesthesia. It will wear off before she leaves the hospital. Happens after any major surgery, I know from experience.
Is she receiving calls in the room yet?
Got internet ? watch videos ?
Great page today and, more importantly great news about Terri.
It's nice to hear the voice behind CentComm after all these years of loving her work.
Give her a call. She really seems to appreciate it.
all the bandages are now off. Thet are pretty amazed that i am recovering as quickly as iam...
UUuh as for what's going on here... why do I just have a BAD feeling X"D

She's a trooper and is recovering faster than Wolverine.
Was great chatting with you Terri!
Get better soon. ^^
basicly a blood tech got a pokimon at my room...
Terri noticed one of the phlebotomists sort of hanging around just outside her room, and asked if she was there to do another blood draw. Gives new meaning to "Team Rocket is Blasting off again!!!!!"
And that is good news Krissy, provided that Terri is truly ready to go home. :-)
It's when you see the new scars on your body in the mirror, that it really hits home how big of a deal it really is.
I just called Terri but she had to cut me off because the surgeon was there about to release her.
Get well soon =)

also, a speedy recovery for you Cent
