OK, Firstly take it easy and get well. Now, just for comparison I was an old man (62) when I had my open heart procedure, out of hospital and home after 8 days, back at work (office job not manual) after 3 months. For the first month I felt like I'd been through a mangle and just wanted to rest but was as alert as I ever get but tired easily, but I still tried to walk a little further each day which went well just don't overdo it, remember, wherever you walk you need to get back. My biggest problem was the post op "wound" it was healed by the time I left hospital (well no dressing needed) but still very painful with certain movements but again, this passes. Take care now, we'll wait patiently.
Centcomm 8th Aug 2016, 5:47 PM edit delete reply

its very hard - but ill do my best to remember that.
Rashala 8th Aug 2016, 12:27 AM edit delete reply

Why would we hate you for this?

Get better and heal top priority!

Also wasn't the last guest page a illustration of a question I asked dolly back when Terri and you last did a fan q&a?
Tokyo Rose 8th Aug 2016, 12:41 AM edit delete reply

Yes. Yes, actually, it was. :D

I'm willing to wait until Cent is healed, feeling better and has her creative mojo back.

I FULLY Expect Rose to sharpen her writing chops with more stories such as her last outing about Noctis and Aurelia.

Sheela 8th Aug 2016, 5:03 PM edit delete reply

But .. what about Roses NOSE ?

It needs to heal too!
Guest 8th Aug 2016, 6:06 PM edit delete reply
Her nose will be fine if she kicks back with a notepad and a pencil, she can have Mr. Black type it up for her :D

Tokyo Rose 8th Aug 2016, 5:23 AM edit delete reply

Update was late because Cent was trying to put together a page using Second Life screenshots. I vetoed it and we went with something simpler. :D

Just be careful of things really funny if makes you want to laugh. Two months after my triple-bypass I watched something on Netflix at that time really got me to laugh. Ouch hee hee Ouch; I had to get away it was so funny and IT hurt! But I really needed it to lift my spirits then. Been there and done that. We can be patient and jones for more comics in private. Each day is a step more along in the healing process. My surgery date was 27-May-2015 and it does get better.
Tokyo Rose 8th Aug 2016, 5:33 AM edit delete reply

Cent really does need to hear from people who've been through this. Thundarl, if you'd like to share your own experiences, please do; same goes for any of our other readers who have had major surgery, or have a loved one that they've watched/assisted during recovery.

Cent's worried about swelling in her legs--the physical feature she considers her best, but which unfortunately resemble sausages at present. Two grafts were taken from the lower leg, and the incisions are pretty gruesome-looking. (They are, however, healing cleanly; there's no sign of infection whatsoever in any of her incision sites.) She is on diuretics and potassium to help reduce water retention and has compression stockings, and the cardiologist stated that the swelling was expected and normal and would go away, but she's still worried.

She also feels VERY frustrated that she's practically helpless--she can't even take out the household trash or add extra litter to the cat litter box, and asked me to drop by this evening and help rearrange her bedding because she was unable to do it herself.

She has good days and bad days; she kinda needs to hear that this is stuff that other people have dealt with, and that it does get better over time. :)
Al C 8th Aug 2016, 8:42 AM edit delete reply
I only had one vein "harvested" from my leg, groin to knee was a huge black bruise, knee down was compression sock and they really work. The bruising looked horrible, my then 5 yr old daughter thought it was scarey, it was amusing watching the bruise slowly "slide" down my leg over the days. All bruising gone within the month as new blood routes established themselves. Yes it is a long scar on the inside of my thigh but not stand out especially if I keep my legs together (keep it clean, no smut). As a guy I don't worry too much as we're allowed to have blemishes but if society mandates otherwise it should be easy to conceal as the scar is just a thin white line with slight purplei(ish) edges which are not to far removed from my base skin colour.
Centcomm 8th Aug 2016, 5:53 PM edit delete reply

mine isnt that bad but its stiff and bloated :(
Centcomm 8th Aug 2016, 5:59 PM edit delete reply

Actually yeah - Rose hit a point here. I am very frustrated that doing something as simple as feeding my cat or opening a car door can now seem a painful if not monumental task. and somethings outright impossible. Today is a semi good day ..right now.
Tokyo Rose 9th Aug 2016, 4:54 PM edit delete reply

Lack of endurance is driving you nuts, too, from what I've seen. You can barely do anything to start with, so you do the barely-anything you can do, and wind up feeling fatigued and tired.

May I suggest a possible restart of the revised story pages while Cent recovers? One a day of the redone pages until the current cutoff point or Cent is ready to start up again. It would give us something to see and shouldn't put any stress on the authors and get everyone more or less up to speed on the revisions to the beginnings so far.
Tokyo Rose 8th Aug 2016, 5:34 AM edit delete reply

We are planning on running four reboot pages that haven't been posted yet. Or did you mean from the very start of the story?
Timotheus 8th Aug 2016, 10:46 AM edit delete reply

>>>>Dammit<<< Don't do any updates unless it's guest art. We will survive until Terri has recovered enough to work without stress. I know the dangers of overdoing it after open heart. I didn't listen to my Doc and have a couple problems as a result. Terri, The Most Important Thing Is Your Health Get Well we will be here. Be very~very glad your Doc included the Potassium with your meds. Mine forgot to and as a result I went back to the ER in the "Short Bus with funny flashing lights." The leg swelling is normal, the diuretic will take care of it, just don't cut yourself short on liquids, Coffee reg or decaf and tea, unsweet or sweet are NOT liquids they are diuretics as are colas dehydration can be serious.
Tokyo Rose 9th Aug 2016, 4:48 PM edit delete reply

Cent pretty much lives on Dr. Pepper (or a reasonable facsimile of same). During our last grocery run, I asked if she was drinking water; she said, AND I QUOTE: "I don't like how water tastes."

Now, I can kinda see that with tap water, it can definitely have a flavor to it that may or may not be pleasant. I did get her to buy a 12-pack of Arrowhead bottled water, though.
Gilrandir 9th Aug 2016, 5:27 PM edit delete reply
Anyone who can say that they don't like the taste of water needs a keeper. ^_^

She is lucky she has you.

[By the way, my wife does not like the taste of water. This does not cause me to revise my opinion. She prefers to drink non-caffeine, zero-calorie colas over water, to which I can only ask "What's the point?" ^_^ She claims she likes the taste of "brown fizzy water with bubbles" better than water. The only redeeming feature I can see for this is that, when on special in the stores, it actually costs less than ordinary water. That part, at least, I understand.]
CptKerion 9th Aug 2016, 8:11 PM edit delete reply
Get her a Brita. It'll make it taste better and is a better long term solution. Admitedly I come from hard water, love hard water, and can't stand anything but hard water (soft water makes my throat itch).

Also, my Aunt suggested a solution. Get her really cheap 2 liters of seltzer water. Cheaper even than most jug water.
Centcomm 9th Aug 2016, 8:15 PM edit delete reply

I also like the brown bubbles and stuff ! with a dash of caffeen .. i gave up nicotine what more do you want! *Cries*
Gilrandir 9th Aug 2016, 8:41 PM edit delete reply
I want you to be happier than Rose's kitten, in a non-nicotine way. I would not ask you to do anything against your will. And I want you to heal quickly and completely.

That having been said, you can drink what you want; but, I have always found clean, cold water to be more refreshing than any other drink. If you don't, that's why we have both humans and androids. I'm very ecumenical. ^_^

Doesn't change the fact that you need a keeper and Rose deserves credit for her efforts on your behalf -- especially since she is also coming off a surgery of her own. I've avoided telling my own post-surgery stories because, to be frank, they pale in comparison to yours and the others who have shared here. But, in the hopes of avoiding a misunderstanding, I will add to the wall of text.

I had a laparoscopic colectomy. By all accounts, the procedure went well. (I don't remember any of it. ^_^) Afterwards, two of the four incisions developed a post-operative infection and had to be unstapled so they could be regularly irrigated and drained. My loving wife volunteered to be trained in home-wound care and for more than a month cleaned out and repacked my wounds twice a day -- and they eventually healed up very well, indeed.

Point being: I needed a keeper, I had a keeper, and she's a keeper. ^_^. So, no offense is intended. We all do better when we have friends and loved ones to look after us. If you don't like water, don't drink water. On the other hand, this might be an excellent time to ask yourself "Why?" If Dr. Pepper tastes better, mazel tov. But if water tastes bad to you, I'd get a little concerned at that point.
sigpig 10th Aug 2016, 3:37 AM edit delete reply

I like a couple of drops of water liberally seasoned with 4oz of good Scotch...

Mark_L_A 9th Aug 2016, 11:22 PM edit delete reply

If someone will buy the filter candles, I'll build Cent a "GOOD" water filter that will make water taste MUCH better.

The Filter Candles are 30-50 a piece and the whole set up needs at least 2, though 3 makes it filter faster.

I made one for my mother, she bought the parts and I put it together. She says the water tastes SOoooo much better.
Wolfsbane 10th Aug 2016, 2:17 AM edit delete reply

Water filters like the Berkey water filter/purifier last a long time and also make the water taste much better. I don't know if we would drink much water at all if it wasn't put through the purifier first.

Another idea: we 'flavor' the water with different types of juices - grape, apple, orange, grapefruit, peach, mango, pineapple, whatever we find in the grocery store. You cut it to the point where it makes for a nice flavoring. It helps increase our water consumption quite a bit. (Lately I've seen something called 'Fruit Water' in the store which is a similar idea but more expensive than our method.)

Also consider drinks like Gatorade that not only give you the water you need but also electrolytes which are very important. (You may want to consult with your doctors on that one because of the electrolyte content.) Tastes good, and good for you.

Keep up the good fight and keep fighting the nicotine!

Cent -
A a retired Med/Surg RN and Hospital Chaplain - and the recipient of merely an emergency 3-hour cholecystectomy (ruptured/abscessed gallbladder)in '04, for which getting back up to normal walking speed took > a month, if you do not quit worrying and push yourself too hard . . . you will regret it.
That said - Your doctor has all the right protocols in place - just go with it.
Your Physical and Occupational Therapists will guide you well - and your awesome legs will return to their normal (drool) state AFTER the inhibiting circumstances have been worked thru. You must needs push yourself appropriately during the Cardiac Rehab process, and it will take several more months to really get back into the shape you strive for - but know that appropriate rest in the process is as important as the rehab activities prescribed. Trust your Treatment Team - and the result will be a stronger Lady for all you have experienced.
When released, your walking regimen must be followed from here on out because the muscle contractions of walking are what pump even non-post op patient's lower extremity fluids back up into the upper circulatory and lymphatic systems to prevent pedal edema. Your circulatory system may create new branches, but keeping fluids flowing is a total must to prevent DVTs.
Take the time you need to heal properly and well - your reader family will all be here waiting and praying for you.

After my ankle-reconstruction surgery (2 ligaments and 3/4 of the one remaining tendon), I had a pretty disgusting-looking scar. My wife (bless her heart) found an ointment from the "La Roche-Posay" skin-care family called "Cicaplast Baume". I rubbed the baume into my scar (healed by this time) 2-3-times per day, and it vastly reduced the appearance of the scar. You can get/order it from CVS Pharmacy:

My grandmother had pretty bad edema in her legs, and, since she's as stubborn as a mule, it took a bit of time to get her to continue wearing her stockings. After a LOT of arguing and grumbling (and a 2-month-long stay in the hospital for other reasons) we got her to wear them. It worked. She's 89-years-young and is living in her own apartment. If she can do it, so can you...
Matt Knab 8th Aug 2016, 2:23 PM edit delete reply

No worries, we want Cent to rest up and recover!
That one guy 8th Aug 2016, 3:24 PM edit delete reply
The human body is frequently irritating about not listening to how we want it to heal more quickly.

Recovery takes time, and from what I've seen with family, the month or two after surgery is the time to relax and let the body knit itself back together. Once your body's had more time to do the largest of the patchwork, they'll push you a bit more in rehab and start getting you to get back to shape. That'll be the time to focus and push and work to get yourself back as you want to be. Pushing too early is more likely to be somewhere from frustratingly counterproductive to draining your will/energy for when you need to push later to even harmful if you're not careful.

Of about 240 active(-ish) comics I follow (on 3 sites), only 98 seem to be weekly updaters or better. You were in rarified company with 3 updates a week; you're still in highly respected company with 1.

Take care, rest, reload, buffer up, and we'll thank you for what we can get of a story we love in the meantime! <3

Admit it, Rose! This is just a sly ploy to get us to post more comments on each of these pages... You won't be happy until it's not just a wall of text, but that wall HAS to go all the way around Phoenix.

Seriously, we all want a happy and healthy Cent-Comm. Take your time, Terri, heal up right. Slow and steady wins the race.

This goes for you to, Rose... Stress can be a Killer, and I know exactly how much of that you must be under right now. Take care of yourself, find some stress relieving activities for yourself and make sure you get plenty of rest as well.

My prayers are for both of you!
Sheela 8th Aug 2016, 5:13 PM edit delete reply

It would be kinda ridiculous to only have Rose posting the dialog on blank frames don't you think? Rest up and take care of yourself Terri.
Tokyo Rose 9th Aug 2016, 4:45 PM edit delete reply

I should totally post blank pages with dialogue and let everyone try to figure out who the hell is saying what, and why.

It'd be like writing "Lost In Translation", actually.

I'm afraid that recent polls show that "legs" is the word. (Possibly because of their connection with "eggs" and @Tokyo Rose's unhealthy obsession with same.)

Owing to a strong showing from the Latin contingent, "bird" is #2 -- however, rumor has it that they try harder. ^_^

Ha! It's always the same with your kind, free webcomic creators. You string us along *for years* with regular updates, an amazing story, great artwork, etc.; earn our eternal praise and admiration... And then, as soon as you hit some life-shaking personal crisis or other, you take that as a prompt to go slacking off. You tell us a big sob story about how you need time before getting back to doing your amazing thing for us, and how very sorry you feel about that. Then you proceed to watch *everyone* come crawling out of their holes, telling you how you absolutely *have* to take it easy and not feel sorry and so on -- only so you can go pretending this kind of sympathy for your needs comes totally unexpected... As if!

I'm onto you. You hear me, I'M ONTO YOU!

And now I tell you what you'll do, Terri, you go right on chilling; and don't you DARE take this rant seriously... I'd never forgive you :-)

Know this: we can wait, and we *will* wait; just as long as necessary, and not one tiny minute less -- *not one*! That's not just an idle promise: that's a damn threat. You better heed it.

frankly, I'm surprised the buffer lasted as long as it did, I expected a hiatus a day or two after the initial announcement. Something of this level being updated even once a week with a major component recovering from major surgery is simply amazing and the definitve display of dedication and drive...unless of course, there's scads of cash to be had for updating ;) relax, your readers aren't going anywhere and we'd prefer if you didn't either by pushing yourself too hard too soon....

We try to maintain a four-week buffer at all times. We just plain ran outta pages. :/

Works for me! Cent getting well supersedes a 3 day a week strip schedule. The Prof's doing a fine job filling in BTW.

I just love coleslaw. Does this make me a zombie? :D

>>>>>VOTE~VOTE~VOTE<<<<< It's the least we can do for Terri. Keep her in at least #8 push for #1 where this belongs.

Now, now ...

Humanity is a lot more than what webcomic you vote for. ^_^ As a fan of DataChasers, do you really want to deny robots the franchise? ^_^

I make sure to vote every day. It's more than worth it.

Wow, great to hear, Cent!

You can and will make it! *hugs*

...and good luck with the stitches removal...

Uhm,... not that I want to put pressure on anyone - just curious...

Since it is already Wednesday - was the update misplaced? or mis-scheduled?

Centcomm 10th Aug 2016, 11:40 PM edit delete reply

it was slightly late :D

You did the right thing in calling someone. I know that when I have a moment of weakness, I call a friend.
