Okay - ive been having a lot of up and down days. And sleeping a LOT concentration comes and goes. And i get afraid something is gonna go wrong.

Annnd then there is the quitting smoking thing. I have totally stopped. And there lies part of the issue. Im trying to break my habit of fireing up a render and going out to have a smoke or whatever its like sitting down at the desk top just makes me want to smoke ( in varying degrees )

The drainage stitches are all out although one of them is being stubborn about healing. My Chest STILL hurts when i bend or stretch. or cough and sneezing.. is interesting.

Overall .. im alive. And have a cardio doctor appt today.

Important question how are you doing? Walking, know they haven't started Therapy yet, at least I had to wait till I was released to work before they would start the PT. I did a lot of walking, inside the apartment building walked the halls then started outside, to the end of the block and back twice a day finally moved up to couple miles a day after two months, need to get back to doing that. What ever you do don't push yourself till you are exhausted take it slow and easy.
DLKmusic 23rd Aug 2016, 9:05 PM edit delete reply

I want to echo Dragonrider's question. It's been a while since you've updated us, and you've been pretty busy all things considered! Let us know how you are doing!

That goes for you too, Rose!

As far as the pic of Kali, that is definitely on the creepy side! Whoever did it, Well Done!

...and thirded: how are you doing, Cent?

Yes indeed-dy how is our favorite Ivory Tower Princess? Our favorite except when it's Rose's turn of course!
Sheela 24th Aug 2016, 3:48 PM edit delete reply

When Rose gets hurt, corpses of unknown people start appearing in the gutters near her home, and the cat will sit in the window and stare at you like it knows something !

Also, coincidentally, all gang members in a 5 mile radius mysteriously disappear ... completely unrelated of course.

Anyone have suggestions on a less destructive 'habit' for CentComm to use while waiting for renders? Keeping in mind that the render process pretty much ties up her computer while it runs.
Dragonrider 24th Aug 2016, 10:46 AM edit delete reply

Crossword puzzles, read a book, go for a walk, Sudoku, meditate, hand write a journal of your life. Contemplate methods of defeating Donal Trump, watch the babble box.
Stormwind13 24th Aug 2016, 11:12 AM edit delete reply

Walks would be great, but they are impractical in He!!, I mean Phoenix. It is 36 C there right now and hasn't hit the high today! It routinely breaks 43 C in the Summer. Heat puts stress on the body, so walking in that would NOT be good.
Wolfsbane 24th Aug 2016, 1:22 PM edit delete reply

What about walks in the evening an hour after the sun is down? Is the temperature low enough then?
Gilrandir 24th Aug 2016, 1:32 PM edit delete reply
@Centcomm is not allowed to only start renders after the sun has left the sky! All her characters will start looking progressively paler, and begin to show signs of pronounced dentition. ^_^ The readers will be forced to choose between Team Kyle and Team Democulus. No one will choose Team Kyle, and New Sparta will declare war on Nova Roma over the perceived slight to their menfolk. Acantha will broker peace between the warring city states by entering into a loveless political marriage with Kyle, and they'll have to have Lynn and Democulus over for dinner -- at which point things will start to get complicated.

So much better for all concerned if @Centcomm can render by the light of day, as well as by night. ^_^
Stormwind13 24th Aug 2016, 2:05 PM edit delete reply

Actually no, Wolfsbane. It can still be over a 40 C at midnight! :-p And walking at night has it own hazards in a major city like Phoenix that I'm not in a hurry to expose CentComm to.
Wolfsbane 24th Aug 2016, 11:52 PM edit delete reply

Wow, that *is* hot.

Don't forget the humidity as well. It's the middle of the monsoon here in Arizona. Good thing I live in Tucson, where it's a few degrees cooler.

Presumably we are looking for something that doesn't require much mental attention, is physically rewarding but relaxing, a 'palette cleanser' from the intellectual effort of composing shots, is a solitary activity but not anti-social, and doesn't require her computer?

(You! Out there on the InterNet! I see you! Shame on you for thinking those thoughts. @Centcomm is pure! Pure, I say! So stop it right now! ^_^)

Does she have access to a game console? Because it occurs to me that, given her proclivities, A small stretch of Fallout 1-4 might be an excellent way to reward herself. ^_^ She could use the render to limit her time wasted spent, or she could use something like an egg timer. ^_^

What about a VCR? Is it time to re-watch all those DragonBall Z episodes she's been meaning to see? For something a little more involving, reading books (available for free from the local library -- now often including stacks of manga and graphic novels) or Sudoku are excellent suggestions. Writing poetry, for example lyrics for DataChasers -- The Musical, if she discovers she is so inclined. ^_^

I understand she was given access to a small tablet while in the hospital, so hypothetically she could browse the LiveJournal and FaceBook pages of others on the web and rediscover how rich and full of meaning her life is when compared to the lives of others, ^_^ Without needing to interfere with her own computer's rendering process.

Hope some of those help (and the rest at least entertain).
Wolfsbane 24th Aug 2016, 1:33 PM edit delete reply

VCR? You mean, like tape? I'm sorry, are you living out of a Tardis or something stuck in the last century? Please don't tell me you still have a Betamax. :P

Digital downloads/streaming/Netflix/Hulu is what we do in this century, sir.

Lotsa fine content that can help pass the time.
Gilrandir 24th Aug 2016, 1:37 PM edit delete reply
One of the parameters of the solution space is that the computer is unavailable, because it is busy rendering. Making the unjustified assumption that @Centcomm is a typical "starving artist", I wasn't going to assume she has multiple high-resolution internet-capable video display devices available to her. But she (or one of her roommates) might have a bit of neglected archaic technology lying about waiting to be used.

Videotapes are another thing that, these days, are commonly available for free at your local library.
Morituri 24th Aug 2016, 8:13 PM edit delete reply
"Unavailable" is relative.

Rendering is compute-intensive, but not bandwidth-intensive. And modern Operating Systems can do more than one thing at a time if the machine's got enough memory to handle it.

I mostly read and post on these forums when I'm waiting for compile cycles to finish or running a machine-learning program on 98%+ of my CPU. I would do the same thing if I rendered graphics - it sure as hell can't be sucking up more memory than what I do, grumble grumble.

(Yes, I got a big honking server motherboard. Yes, I filled all its memory slots with the biggest modules they'd hold. Yes, I run all of it on one partition not separated up into dozens of virtual machines. No you don't want to know how much it cost.)

Gilrandir 24th Aug 2016, 9:05 PM edit delete reply
I concede that "unavailable" can be ambiguous in this context. However, if it were available for something already identified as suitable, we wouldn't be having this discussion. So, I am inferring that streaming video or playing video games isn't a viable solution. On the other hand, as I so often discover, I could easily be wrong. ^_^
Wolfsbane 25th Aug 2016, 12:02 AM edit delete reply

eh, pretty much any laptop/tablet can be used for viewing content, even the cheapest ones. You don't always have to go for the Hi-dee-fi 4K 60" top shelf tech.

On the other hand, it is a good idea to get away from the screens for a while and take frequent breaks. Rendering sounds like as good an excuse as any to get up and interact with RL for awhile.

(And before any flame wars get started, the VCR comment was just good-natured ribbing. They are all just tools to an end. If you have it and it works for you, go for it.)
Gilrandir 25th Aug 2016, 2:48 AM edit delete reply
I took it as all in good fun. No worries from me on that score. ^_^

The chest pain will continue for a while keep pillow close they gave it to you for a reason when in car make sure pillow is between seat belt and you. Don't Bend, Stretch too much for a while. Wires on sternum can break if pushed too much before sternum is completely healed, voice of experience here. Don't lift over 5 lbs for 12 weeks at least, again sad voice of experience here.
CptKerion 24th Aug 2016, 1:38 PM edit delete reply
I think the pillow is in large part to ensure that the force of your body impacting the seatbelt in the event of sudden stops or a collision is not concentrated along one line and instead way more spread out as is its application.
Thus it avoids rebreaking the healing parts of the ribcage.
I think. I'm not entirely certain but it makes sense.

Also, I can't even imagine how hard it must be to keep that lifting limit that long. Even with a 25lb lifting limit for two days I struggled to keep it while doing things I do most days.
Dragonrider 24th Aug 2016, 6:15 PM edit delete reply

The alternative is to live, as I do, with a separated sternum you get to feel and hear the sides rub when you try to lay on your back. If the sternum doesn't heal properly my surgeon and cardiologist both said they can open me up treat both sides re wire them and I can still put up with the separation because there is only a small chance they would fuse.
The pillow is to protect the sternum as you supposed, however you also hug it for dear life during coughing, sneezing and extreme laughing spells it provides padded pressure to keep the sternum from separating while those things happen. The pillow becomes your bestus friend for several weeks.

When renders start, go chop an onion. Then 2 ribs of celery. Then one carrot. Put them all into a pot and add water, fresh herbs (thyme, rosemary, bay leaf) and other vegetables of your choice. Bring to a boil, and then let simmer for an hour. Add chunks of chicken from the grocery-store BBQ take-out. Cook for 30 minutes. Voila - you have chicken soup. You can add rice, orzo, or broken-up spaghetti if you wish.

By that time, the rendering should be done. Or, if it only takes as long as chopping an onion, you can do the soup in stages - one stage per render...
CptKerion 24th Aug 2016, 1:40 PM edit delete reply

If you can laugh without it hurting, I have a couple of excellent recommendations for anime you can stream through Hulu for free.

If not, I would recommend binge watching your favorite Soap Opera, Cop show or reality Show!

These are typically low resolution programs that you can stream to your tablet at 3G speeds without having to worry about lag.

Keep on getting well! We're all cheering you on to quit smoking! If it helps, maybe get one of those electric, water vapor cigarettes--it harmlessly simulates the sensation.
mjkj 24th Aug 2016, 3:54 PM edit delete reply

What I heard was that they are not so harmless, KarToon...

I would suggest chewing some gum...
Morituri 24th Aug 2016, 8:04 PM edit delete reply
At the very least, exercise caution. Whether or not that's harmless very strongly depends on what you fill it with.

Stay away from every kind of anything that's tobacco-derived or contains nicotine, no matter what form it's in. Hell, nicotine chewing gum that's supposed to help people quit often winds up being their next cancerous addiction.

Anyway, my preferred advice would be don't do anything that involves combustion (including electrical) of anything.

cent comm could try crocheting all it takes is some yarn and a hook. available at most craft stores or soul sucking super centers like walmart or target for under $10.00 for both items and is loads of fun ( pending how fancy the yarn is).
Tokyo Rose 25th Aug 2016, 2:07 PM edit delete reply

The cardiologist actually suggested knitting or crocheting. I pointed out that Cent often complains of feeling cold, so making a blanket could help. :D
CptKerion 26th Aug 2016, 10:07 PM edit delete reply
Oh god, with how much rendering she must do with this... you'd all be drowning in blankets.
Tokyo Rose 27th Aug 2016, 4:13 PM edit delete reply

Hey, there's an idea: Cent learns how to knit, gets good enough at it to do specific patterns, and starts cranking out Datachasers blankets to sell!
Gilrandir 27th Aug 2016, 9:30 PM edit delete reply
Instead of releasing new DataChasers updates to the Internet, she could just do each page as a hanging tapestry. ^_^ It might take a bit longer to render each page, though.
Sheela 28th Aug 2016, 4:23 PM edit delete reply

Centcomm blankets ?

Safety blankets, eh Charlie Brown ?
Timotheus 24th Aug 2016, 6:03 PM edit delete reply

I don't know if I suggested salt free pretzel rods to help with the quit smoking jitters before. They can help with the oral/tactile part of the addiction plus the frustration of trying to light them up is good for taking your mind off other problems.
Dragonrider 24th Aug 2016, 6:23 PM edit delete reply

Unfortunately Salt Free Pretzel Rods sound about as natural and appetizing as Decaf Coffee(The Devils Brew, served as the exclusive and only beverage in all dining establishments in Hades.)
Ryu Santos 25th Aug 2016, 3:51 AM edit delete reply
The Devil's Brew is Starbucks. And saltless pretzel rods are actually pretty good. Especially when dipped in melted Godiva chocolate......mmmmm chocolate.....

Since we are looking to replace a 'reward' habit, it will need to be something @Centcomm considers a reward, not just something capable of passing the time -- of which I agree the available options are innumerable.

@Centcomm ... how do you feel about bubble wrap? ^_^. Get a roll, pre-measure out one cigarette's equivalent-sized squares and make a stack of those. Every time you start a render, grab the top square off the stack and get poppin'. ^_^
DLKmusic 24th Aug 2016, 7:49 PM edit delete reply

that's.... actually a damned good idea!
CptKerion 24th Aug 2016, 10:41 PM edit delete reply
Adding that to the list of things I need to start doing.
Tokyo Rose 25th Aug 2016, 2:08 PM edit delete reply

Holy shit, that's brilliant. :D
Gilrandir 25th Aug 2016, 2:18 PM edit delete reply
Well, if she finds crochet works for her, that's better. When she's done with the crochet, she has a blanket. When she's done with the bubble wrap she has ... used bubble wrap. ^_^

But, if she enjoys popping bubble wrap, and doesn't yet enjoy crochet ... as long as it helps with the ultimate goal of avoiding nicotine products, that's the most important thing. ^_^

Probably don't want to invest heavily in it to start. Just get a few slabs (any of the roommates work in shipping?) and try it out first, to see if it works.
Sheela 28th Aug 2016, 4:24 PM edit delete reply

Oh man, wasn't there a movie where this one busty gold digger was popping bubble wrap ?

I think it had Leslie Nielsen in it.
Morituri 24th Aug 2016, 7:50 PM edit delete reply
Your chest still hurts when you bend or stretch? Um. Then don't do that very much, okay? Physical therapist will probably give you pointers on how much or how little, and pay attention, okay?

Healing is hard work. Like any full-time job, it can interfere with other things you want to do. But, seriously. It's a more important job than most, and you should take the time to do it well.

Quitting smoking, on the other hand, is easy. Hell, I used to know a guy who'd quit about once a week. But he always did kind of a crappy job of quitting, which is why he'd quit again a few days later. Never really did get it right, despite all the practice. Once again, I figure it's because he never took enough time to do the job right.

Just sayin'. You take the time you need. Do a good job, both healing and quitting. It ain't easy, but nobody else is going to do it for you. Best wishes for a full recovery, and I hope you only need to quit smoking just the once.
Morituri 24th Aug 2016, 7:55 PM edit delete reply
If you're looking for something less destructive than smokes, that can proxy for most of the old 'habit' and 'muscle memory' cues like having a rectangular pack of them in your purse and sticking one in your mouth when you're waiting for a render?

Consider Pocky. It ain't exactly health food, but it's not poison either.

"Doctor, it hurts when I do this."
"Well, then don't do it."

Good luck with the non-smoking crusade, Terri. I quit back in '91 after smoking since I was 15 and it was a bitch. I found sucking on peppermints was a good oral substitute for a ciggie; the nicotine withdrawal was another matter. I sweated, I drooled, I had pains, I had chills, I couldn't concentrate ... that lasted about three days and went away. The oral fixation hung on longer, but that went away as well. The twenty pounds I gained afterwards, well, that stayed with me. Regardless, you're much better off not smoking. Hang in there. :D
StellarJay 25th Aug 2016, 1:25 AM edit delete reply

This reminds me of the approach that Telly Savalas took when he and his TV character Kojak switched from cigarettes to Tootsie Pops.
Wolfsbane 25th Aug 2016, 3:35 AM edit delete reply

hehheheh... he said 'oral'...hehhehhehheh
Tokyo Rose 25th Aug 2016, 2:10 PM edit delete reply

Cent's been using Life Savers and lollipops to manage the oral fixation. Cardiologist recommended Altoids, and gave one to Cent right there in the office to demonstrate. The idea is to introduce a very strong, intense taste (particularly a minty one, doubly effective since Cent preferred menthols) that stimulates the senses.
Wolfsbane 25th Aug 2016, 2:41 PM edit delete reply

Altoids'll do it. If I can think of any other curiously strong menthol hard candy/mint from our area, I'd be happy to ship her a bag to help support the effort. What about Fisherman's Friend?
CptKerion 25th Aug 2016, 9:03 PM edit delete reply
There is an odd candy that you can generally find at specialty candy shops (try checking out any local mall, they'll usually have something to the effect) that I've seen called variations on "mint cubes" "ice cubes" and "blue cubes" that is an overwhelmingly powerful mint flavored hard candy that has some menthol elements I believe. They're generally blue, transparent, and fairly cheap.

Another viable candy for getting the oral fixation and the strong mint taste would be candy canes or peppermint sticks.

Wolfsbane's idea of Fisherman's Friend is also a fairly good way for it. Also good for reducing the severity of coughs while you're at it. Given that coughing hurts a lot for her right now, that's probably a really good idea.
Evervigilant 26th Aug 2016, 1:41 AM edit delete reply
Candy canes work as well if you can get them. Luckily Christmas stuff should already be coming out and they should be available. They are a strong mint flavor, last quite awhile and even provide a form you can hold like you would a cig.

Cassian Roll Call!

I've been going through the archives trying to find all the Cassians. Here's a list of names and last known status. If I've missed anybody, or if someone has a later status update on any of these names, please let me know.

Astraea - was never on screen. Last known status, assigned to sniper duty to kill anyone or anything emerging from the network hub where Dr. Silver is doing her cyberpath magic.

Belladonna - Was never on screen. Last known status, on comm to Noctis, reported herself "in combat! Assault on the south gate, heavily armed opposi...." *#^&% NO CARRIER

Hrist - Had the good fortune (yes, really!) to be sent to kill Maxus Valerius, who was probably the only person who both had the ability to stop her without killing her, and the nobility to bother to try. Last known status, missing her right arm, cut off from comms, surrendered to and sheltered by Maxus. Currently in his safe room, along with Irene. She had just witnessed Malati's ending.

Continued, next comment...
Morituri 25th Aug 2016, 12:46 AM edit delete reply
Cassian Roll Call, continued!

Kali - the 'right hand and administrative assistant' of Decimus Livius, although she absolutely hated his guts and regretted stopping his mother from strangling him as a baby. She was finally granted 'Libertatem' when Decimus used lethal force against his sister, and instantly murdered him, in a suicidal act which as far as she knew, would condemn everyone she had ever known to death by nuclear fire. She may have hated his guts more than she loved anything and everything else in the whole world herself included, but damn, dooming everyone to die in nuclear fire might have been a bit much, y'think? Last known status: Free-floating carbon atoms and remnants of burnt metal.

Krysanthe - Was never on screen. Last known status: she was commanded by Nox to rendezvous with Nisha and bring power cells or new weapons "& await directives."

Lethia - Was never on screen. Last known status, on comm to Noctis, reported "Holding off an attack at the north gate as well!"

Malati - Last known status - overloaded her inhibitor just barely long enough to yell "Long Live Princess Acantha" and suicide, after trying to fool it into allowing her to abandon a mission to kill Maxus.

Nisha - Was never on screen. Last known status: On comm to Noctis, reported dealing with rioters, out of ammunition, heavily damaged with rounds to torso and leg. She was ordered to stand down & wait for supplies, reinforcements, and further orders.

Noctis: Fooled Decimus into ordering her to "carry out my plan to preserve the glory of the throne". This order she elicited from him with the explicit intent of subverting his intent in giving it. Last known status: Fully operational, cooperating with General Maxus and the rebels, and merrily murdering the Prince's blue-armored 'elite troops'. For the glory of the throne.

Nox: Sent with a squad of blueboys to retrieve Acantha and Lynn, did not manage to save them from an incendiary trap set by Democlus, and to put it politely did not mourn them. Beat Democlus in a fight and was then sadly lamenting his inability to kill her. Then she got her head blown off by Dolly, so, um, yay? Last known status: her severed head was being used as a ghastly puppet by Tokyo Rose, in full view of Noctis.

Nyx: Was never on screen. Last known status - monitoring the Imperator's comm channels, in the timeframe just before Decimus shot Kyle.

Samanta: Somewhere between fanatic, poetic, and psychotic. Or all three. Engaged the rebel cell accompanied by Ada and Teedee and withdrew badly damaged. Last known status: According to Teedee Samanta indicated that she'd been ordered by Noctis to stop fighting after being damaged.

Tennyo - Was never on screen. Last heard from in communication with Samanta, apparently badly damaged and trying to keep up the Cassians' comms network. Noctis attempted to contact her later, but there was no reply.

Is that everybody?
Tokyo Rose 25th Aug 2016, 2:11 PM edit delete reply

(The Epiphyte Chorus Line) I've Got A Luvverly Bunch Of Epiphytes (... There they are, all dancing in a row. ...)

(The CentComm Doll Chorus Line) I'd Like The World To Watch Me Sing (... in perfect harmony. And wave my arms and legs in sync, because we're all just me. ...)

...and who could ever forget the classic...

(Malati) Get Me to the Match On Time (I've got a wrestling match to go see; Petronius is gonna ring their chimes; Nobody's finah, wanna show him my va<bleep>; just get me to the match on time!)

I'd like to nominate...

Noctis singing "Every step you take" (no changes in lyrics required)

Teedee "I am android hear me roar"

and as an alternate for the CentComm Chorus Line... "We are the world, we are the AI's. We are the ones who watch your every move, it's not a surprise"

and last but not least, our Very Own Tokyo Rose singing...
"I just called.. to say... you Ass-hole!
I just called to say that you're a shit!
I just called, to say you ass-hole,
thats from the depths of my fucking heart!"

(you need shades to sing that btw, Rose!)

For TeeDee, I'd go with "I Like Big Guns (And I Cannot Lie)". Mr Black would reprise some aria from "Car-man". Tokyo Rose is tough ... Probably anything from the Terrence and Phillip Show. ^_^

I'll give you "I like big guns" for TeeDee! works for me!

Eh, if you pissed off Tokyo Rose, last thing you'll hear is Ride of the Valkyries while an army of Feral Rose's decent on you.

Hi Cent! You remembered correctly. I'm glad you like it. :)

Thank you for sharing, zartala. Very nice. Now was the background a nod to her ultimate fate or a reflection of the personal HE!! she was suffering through? :-)

Both. Due to travel for school, I got to read almost the entirety of Kali's last scene in one sitting. All I could think of was how fitting her end was based on how she's had to live. Plus I really enjoyed the poetic justice that she delivered. :)
