I do think that TeeDee and Noctis are evenly matched in sarcasm and destructive ability. However I doubt Noctis would express the desire to collect a "Bag of Dicks" for a comrade in arms who is in the hospital.
Gilrandir 25th Oct 2016, 9:13 PM edit delete reply
Really? Noctis is unfailingly polite, restrained, thoughtful and well-spoken, while TeeDee is often abrasive, crude, hostile, and prone to verbally lash out with no justification whatsoever. They might be evenly matched in verbally destructive capabilities, but Noctis doesn't seem to be close to TeeDee in her desire to lash out with wanton verbal abuse.

Noctis seems (to me) to be a student of verbal aikido, while TeeDee would seem to be a student of verbal krav maga.

EDIT: I see you removed "desire" (for destruction) from your post -- so now, of course, I do not disagree.
Dragonrider 25th Oct 2016, 9:33 PM edit delete reply

Yes I originally wrote destructive desire, and then analyzed that a realized I wanted Destructive Capabilities as a much better choice. They remind me of sisters, would insult and beat hell out of each other but stand back to back against all comers.
Gilrandir 25th Oct 2016, 10:11 PM edit delete reply
I expect TeeDee could have that kind of a relationship with several people. (We've already seen something much like that with Marcus, for example.) But Noctis (as I read her) would not. It seems likely to me that if Noctis and TeeDee ever took arms against each other, only one would leave the field of battle.

Noctis' character seems much more to me like one of Dickson's Dorsai, about which we have this quote:

"Dogs - even mad dogs - fight, and the losing dog, if he can, runs away. But no wolf runs. For a wolf wins every fight but one, and in that one, he dies." -- Gordon R. Dickson

This is, of course, completely untrue of actual wolves, but (IMHO) wonderfully evocative. ^_^
Dragonrider 25th Oct 2016, 10:37 PM edit delete reply

Ah Yes the Dorsai, possibly, if not probably, on a level of The Notebook of Lazarus Long.
I doubt that they would take arms up think it would be physical as the confrontation between Dolly and Kali was, a series of physical blows meant to inflict damage with out permanent harm.
Centcomm 26th Oct 2016, 11:21 AM edit delete reply

AT Gil-- I think you are more or less on point with the verbal skills :D

However Noctis could make Teedee feel VERY stupid very quickly should she desire it.
Gilrandir 28th Oct 2016, 11:37 AM edit delete reply
Okay, random thought time:

If "Love is a Battlefield", what is your martial art of choice? ^_^

DSCLAIMER: I am not a practitioner of any martial art, so all of my information is derived from obsolete stereotypes and bad Hong Kong Cinema. Aikido seems the obvious choice to me, but is these anyone out there who prefers Jujitsu? Karate? Jeet Kune Do? Wu Shu? (Lots of 'toys' for that. ^_^) 'Drunken Style'? Anyone go the Fezzik route? ("Lately I've been specializing in groups".) ^_^

"If "Love is a Battlefield", what is your martial art of choice? ^_^"

It's not a martial art, Gil, but my weapon of choice is Chocolate...
Centcomm 26th Oct 2016, 8:12 AM edit delete reply

Teedee is worried.. Her one defining trait is that the more worried .. scared or angry she gets the more her mouth runs.. She puffs up to be more aggressive it is a negative trait.

In the revamp we lowered her " Bigotry " Of Humans to a manageable level. After talking with real EMTs she never would have been allowed to be in SR with that kind of Bigotry .. it was poor writing on our part and that has been corrected.. Shes still foul mouthed and snarky. and will continue to be so.
Gilrandir 26th Oct 2016, 8:18 AM edit delete reply
"Lowered", sure. I just would have expected (all other things being equal) that it would still affect target-selection for the snark to prioritize Maxus over Noctis. Picking the easiest target, rather than the more satisfying target, just strikes me as shading (in an admittedly subtle way) more towards bullying, which was not a trait I associated with TeeDee.
Tokyo Rose 27th Oct 2016, 3:10 PM edit delete reply

Noctis is the one talking (and being dramatic)...
Fairportfan 25th Oct 2016, 9:28 PM edit delete reply

I wanna be Teedee when i grow up.

Except for the disdain for human sexuality.
Centcomm 26th Oct 2016, 8:13 AM edit delete reply

hehe.. thanks for being here Fairport!
Fairportfan 27th Oct 2016, 10:15 PM edit delete reply

Yer still on probation over Ceci's death.
Sheela 28th Oct 2016, 7:00 AM edit delete reply

And Malati's death.
DLKmusic 25th Oct 2016, 9:38 PM edit delete reply

I actually see this as the start of a friendship between TeeDee and Noctis. And for TeeDee to alter her view some on us meatbags, now that she is face to face with pure machine...
Gilrandir 25th Oct 2016, 9:52 PM edit delete reply
I actually thought the writing was slightly weaker here. There's nothing in TeeDee's established character to justify her disdain for, and gratuitous abuse of, Noctis, since Noctis is obviously non-human and previously TeeDee has only shown her generalized and non-specific contempt for humans. If Noctis had actually done anything to impede TeeDee in her duty, or had threatened Ada, or had been aggressive in any way, then there might be some justification for it. This just makes TeeDee look (in my opinion) 'rabid' -- i.e., lashing out at anything and everything she can just to reassure herself that she is bigger and tougher than anyone else around her. Hmmm.... I understand the Praetorians will have some openings. If she just pads her resume out with a few criminal atrocities, she could probably qualify. (Other than the whole 'being an android' thing.)
HiFranc 25th Oct 2016, 11:17 PM edit delete reply

Actually, I can see where they're both coming from:

Noctis is trying to find the right word because conveying information at the same time as not wanting to ignite the war again.

TeeDee has a patient that needs urgent medical care, is used to dealing with blunt information and expects androids to express the facts quickly. From her point of view, Noctis is a thespian who is trying to make a drama out of a crisis.
sigpig 26th Oct 2016, 7:41 AM edit delete reply

FWIR, TeeDee is snarky and sarcastic to everybody - human and android (and probably robot/drone) alike. Who else have we seen that had a similar combination of snark, sarcasm, and instant deadly mayhem? I'll give you a hint - she was a Cassian...

(I also think she would have gone into "friendly" competition with TeeDee over the number of dicks they could bag...)
Gilrandir 26th Oct 2016, 8:20 AM edit delete reply
Now that would be Malati, and I agree with you that they would have gotten along like a house on fire. ^_^ (Possibly literally.)
Centcomm 26th Oct 2016, 11:00 AM edit delete reply

The would.. but everyone would think they hated each other from the amount of snark.
Tokyo Rose 26th Oct 2016, 3:41 PM edit delete reply

I hope nobody's forgetting that Noctis is Nova Roman, and the extraction team is here because Nova Roma kidnapped Lynn, and Teedee and Ada have had to fight their way through quite a few Nova Roman soldiers and one Cassian to get to this point...
Gilrandir 26th Oct 2016, 4:15 PM edit delete reply
True, but they fought beside Nova Roman soldiers (irregulars) as well, offering their (shielded) bodies as moving cover at one point. So that just shows how messed up everything is. ^_^ (Ref. here)
Tokyo Rose 27th Oct 2016, 3:11 PM edit delete reply

Those were Nova Roman rebels, who were helping them break into the palace to carry out their mission. Bit different, that.
Dragonrider 25th Oct 2016, 10:41 PM edit delete reply

@DLKmusic I fully agree.
Centcomm 26th Oct 2016, 8:14 AM edit delete reply

Actually I could see them sparring on both real and verbal arenas on a constant basis..

Shoot, thought I was over Malati… (goes off to weep)
Sheela 28th Oct 2016, 7:03 AM edit delete reply

TeeDee and Malati would get along like a house on fire and gasoline.

They'd be an awesome shock troop though.
mjkj 25th Oct 2016, 10:10 PM edit delete reply

Great update, thank you, CentComm. =)

...and TeeDee seems to take her job of getting help for Acantha and getting Lynn to safety very serious ... and the interruption is annoying her (especially since she is not allowed to use her little baby on them), no wonder she lashed out... ;)

Gilrandir 25th Oct 2016, 10:26 PM edit delete reply
I am sure that she finds it irritating, but not sure why she'd go after Noctis. The pair didn't even impede the New Trojans. TeeDee challenged them, not the reverse. And I would understand if she was reflexively insulting to Maxus, because he's human. But Noctis has done nothing but provide information and accompany Maxus -- but she gets the slam ("pasty").

But, as always, the creatrices know their characters better than I. These are just my opinions.
Timotheus 26th Oct 2016, 12:15 AM edit delete reply

I believe I should point out that TeeDee has a long and storied past of insulting just about everyone including Ada at all times. May I recall for you Dr. Denmark's commentary on TeeDee's reputation when they first met way back at the start. Apparently TeeDee is just like this with anyone she feels peeved with, animal, vegetable, or mineral.
Gilrandir 26th Oct 2016, 12:35 AM edit delete reply
If you're arguing for the 'rabid' interpretation, @Timotheus, I won't dispute it. I just felt like we had reason to hope for somewhat better from TeeDee.

She points her weapon at a pair of (armed) chance-met strangers and orders them to stand still, then gets irritated at them for delaying her. Ok.
Timotheus 26th Oct 2016, 2:20 AM edit delete reply

Not so much "rabid" as that in spite of having a basically good heart she's uncontrollably mouthy.
Centcomm 26th Oct 2016, 10:54 AM edit delete reply

Ill Point out one very very hevely armored and armed stranger and one Cassian!
Gilrandir 26th Oct 2016, 11:43 AM edit delete reply
An interesting point. From a New Troy perspective what is a "Cassian", and how would it be perceived as different from any other Mark 3 military chassis? We know why the Romans regard them with awe and fear, but I don't see why TeeDee would necessarily react to a Cassian any differently than she would react to (for example) Officer Ray? Or one of Dr. Silver's advanced probes? Are the Cassians such legendary bogeymen that all the citizens of all the other city states know and fear their advanced combat capabilities? (As well as recognize them on sight?)

It seems like (unless you know Cassians), that just boils down to "two armed strangers, one in visible armor".

And, as noted, I understand her being on edge -- with what that brings. I'm just slightly puzzled by the way her focus seemed to fix more or less immediately on Noctis, when it is obvious that Maxus is in charge.

It's no big deal. I've probably gone on about this longer than I should. My apologies.
Centcomm 26th Oct 2016, 8:16 AM edit delete reply

True Teedee is truly equal opportunity insult-er. And she loves running her mouth.
Centcomm 26th Oct 2016, 8:15 AM edit delete reply

They DO have a perfect record to worry about .. And Teedee is not going to let Acantha ruin that!

Great to have you back to frequently commenting, Cent =) *hugs*
Dragonrider 25th Oct 2016, 10:44 PM edit delete reply

Just to restate an observation I made early yesterday morning after comment shut down on the last page;

You know who we haven't seen and has been tracking Prince Douchebag, Miriako, Isn't it about time for her to show up grab Julia and save Acantha? Or will Julia, Miriaco and Company join our Merry Band of Mayhem and fly to Atta for their fire free Med Facilities?
Gilrandir 25th Oct 2016, 11:04 PM edit delete reply
Well, I'm not sure of the details, but I definitely agree with you, @Dragonrider, about the main principle. However, I suspect we will need to wait for a few pages. Tokyo Rose hasn't done her talking head thing, but when she does I think we can be pretty confident that she knows where Miraiko is, and that Miraiko knows where Julia is. So, once people get around to the free, open, and honest exchange of informa...

Oh, wait. Never mind. ^_^

By the way, is it fair to assume Dolly and Lynn filled in Ada and TeeDee about some events 'off-camera', while they were walking? Otherwise, how would Ada and TeeDee know it was Kali that incinerated Prince Decimus? I think they came on-scene just after the conflagration made both bodies unidentifiable, and they immediately focused on attending the living.
Tokyo Rose 26th Oct 2016, 3:43 PM edit delete reply

They did fill details in off-camera, yes.

I'd say they have just enough time to run out the door and jump from a wicked cool explosion, action movie style.
Tokyo Rose 27th Oct 2016, 3:13 PM edit delete reply

There's ALWAYS time for wicked cool explosions.
Sheela 28th Oct 2016, 6:56 AM edit delete reply

Those are messy, icky and full of shit. :(
antrik 26th Oct 2016, 6:07 PM edit delete reply
I'm beginning to wonder whether Noctis is actually suffering from something like Asperger's... Thus far I was taking her overly pedantic speech (along with the deadpan expression) as an act to perplex others; but the fact that she won't turn it off even when under visible anxiety -- and it tells a lot when anything is visible on her -- suggests that it might indeed be involuntary?
HiFranc 27th Oct 2016, 12:34 AM edit delete reply

I take it to be simply that, given the complex world of New Rome's politics, she weighs each word carefully to make the best of any situation. She's high enough to be a player but not so high that she can do what she likes.
Dragonrider 27th Oct 2016, 6:29 AM edit delete reply

She's a bit higher than a player, until or if Acantha recovers to appoint Maxus as her Regent she is effectively the Queen on the Chess Board. To carry the anthology further, Maxus is King, Rook and Knight rolled into one.
Sheela 28th Oct 2016, 7:09 AM edit delete reply

Also, lets not forget that she was *designed* to be the way that they are. No random seed for them.
Gilrandir 28th Oct 2016, 7:14 AM edit delete reply
There's an awful lot of diversity in Cassian personalities and temperaments for that to be true.
Centcomm 28th Oct 2016, 8:23 AM edit delete reply

They do grow over time.. as they learn and decide what they like and dont like . as long as they get the job done they really dont care how a cassians personality develops unless they mouth off to the wrong person. LIke Malati did to Kali.
Gilrandir 28th Oct 2016, 8:43 AM edit delete reply
So we're back to the "Nature vs. Nurture" debate? ^_^ Reconciling the "android personalities can be rigidly predetermined at the time of creation so as to mentally predispose them to do exactly what we need them to do -- which is a horribly unethical way to treat sentient beings ... except when it isn't" versus "it makes a better story this way" does help (IMHO) shade DataChasers to the "soft science fiction" side of the Force.

On the other hand, it does make for a good story. ^_^ I'm not sure how making some degree of unpredictability (i.e., "randomness") a necessary precondition for the emergence of sentience would weaken the story, so I would have just gone with "Everyone, even Cassians and Black Angels, gets a random seed, or else they're just a robot and not an android." But, it is your story, not mine. And please do not doubt that I am enjoying it immensely just as it is.
Centcomm 28th Oct 2016, 9:40 AM edit delete reply

Okay.. I guess I need to do a supplemental on Cassian construction :D :D
Gilrandir 28th Oct 2016, 10:33 AM edit delete reply
Actually, it appears to be just me, so don't stress about it. I really would like to know, however, what is the difference (and why is there a difference, or is there a difference) between Officer Ray and a Cassian? Aren't they both in military-grade Model 3 chassis? Except that Officer Ray's tech should be 20-40 years more advanced.

It's not so much Cassians specifically, as designer personalities in general and how that reconciles with "humanity is more than just what you are made of".

On the other hand, if the Cassians have a secret origin story to explain why they have powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal androids, no need to give away premature spoilers. ^_^
Centcomm 28th Oct 2016, 11:37 AM edit delete reply

The Cassians DO have a few classified components.. and no they wont be talked about :D
Tokyo Rose 28th Oct 2016, 3:48 PM edit delete reply

The real difference between Ray and a Cassian is that Ray is a police officer, and the Cassians are assassins, spies, and saboteurs. Ray's trained to de-escalate situations and use minimal force. The Cassians have been trained to use whatever means are necessary to control a situation.
Gilrandir 28th Oct 2016, 4:43 PM edit delete reply
Ah, but I was thinking more in terms of combat capabilities. I don't get the impression, for example, that Officer Ray will be deflecting incoming autofire with his police baton anytime soon. (Though feel free to prove me wrong.) Or effortlessly disabling 4 perpetrators in the blink of an eye. Difference in attitude, purpose, and tactics notwithstanding, when it comes to the technologically provided combat capabilities, there would seem to be a ... gulf which technology alone does not explain.
Sheela 28th Oct 2016, 6:46 PM edit delete reply

Yeah, but Officer Ray is also built with a budget in mind. The Cassians are not. Also, any kind of limiter is removed on the Cassians I bet.

Kinda like how the civilian version of an AR-15 rifle does not have full-auto capabilities ... the Cassians come with everything, plus the android equivalent to an underbarrel grenade launcher, just for added fun.

They are also heavily modded for combat.
Kinda like how Centcomm had to cheat when building CeCi.
Gilrandir 28th Oct 2016, 7:20 PM edit delete reply
Possibly, @Sheela. But I don't recall anywhere that that is established as canon. If Officer Ray is tooling around in an HMV-1, Ada and TeeDee are knocking around in XM800's, and the Cassians are cruising around in M1A1 main battle tanks (which just look like Corvettes) that is a legitimate explanation. I just didn't get the impression that was the case. I doubt Nova Roma is made of money any more than New Troy is.

And why, in New Troy where androids are trusted and valued members of society, would you build a hyper-capable military chassis and then apply limiters before equipping it to a trained volunteer, whereas in Nova Roma, you have Janissaries equipped with full, unlimited capabilities? Better to build a more limited chassis and economize at the design level. Or just build wired loyalty into your police force and give them unfettered access to their full capability.
Centcomm 28th Oct 2016, 8:12 PM edit delete reply

there is a reason for that.. Now officer ray IS fast enough to put himself in harms way in the case of a bullet. All im going to say is Cassians cheat. How.. is classified..
Tokyo Rose 28th Oct 2016, 11:13 PM edit delete reply

Cassians are not built to the New Troy "model" standards; we do tend to use the terms as out-of-universe shorthand to make comparisons, because we're sloppy that way.
Sheela 29th Oct 2016, 9:50 AM edit delete reply

Heck, even if the quality and the price is roughly the same, the Civilian and the military AR-15 do not have the same capabilities.

Same goes for combat androids, I figure.
There's a reason why TeeDee wants to be a military droid!
SeanR 31st Oct 2016, 4:41 PM edit delete reply
Please. I'd love to see how Cassians differ from New Troy manufacture. For that matter, I'd like to see what makes Luna androids different, and we've yet to see any of those.

So sorry to hear you need to go back into the body shop for more work. I really hope that things get worked out correctly and refined properly so that you may enjoy good health for years to come.

I think there is much about TeeDee to like. She is (IMHO) one of those 'diamonds in the rough' types. I do think her decision-making skills suit her for a guest-starring role on "Lost In Translation", but I am pretty confident she means well.

Gotta admit that one of my favorite pages, was the ones where TeeDee told the story of Mr Poppolopolis the Murderturd to the Priest.

But she *is* a strange lifeform.
Combat Medic Z 29th Oct 2016, 6:26 PM edit delete reply

Teedee's struggle with herself after the reload, her interaction with Marcus, her epiphany when she synced properly, and her being genuinely contrite about her behaviour, made her a lot more human to me (even though she's not a human).

Sheela 31st Oct 2016, 6:54 AM edit delete reply

That, and Rose tends to say "BAD Centcomm" when you give spoilers to the audience. :D
SeanR 31st Oct 2016, 4:47 PM edit delete reply
I thought she only said "Bad Centcomm" when she drops in-world details that hadn't been finalized yet.

I don't have a lot of resources to help you out at the moment as I've been medically released from the army. I just wanted to drop a note and say I adore Noctis' character design and modeling.

Hmmm. With 'Noctis', 'Nox', and 'Nyx' - two Latin words for night and the name of the Greek Goddess of the night - were the folk who created them going for a theme? Or were those three a cohort all created at the same time? Or did they choose their own names?

Also, heart stents suck. Sorry to hear that you're getting stuck with another one. Get well soon, okay?

There's a bit of a name theme in place, and it's intentional in-universe even though it was a complete accident out-of-universe. Cent and I don't always consult at every stage of character creation; I didn't know about Nox or Nyx when I created Noctis. :D
Centcomm 30th Oct 2016, 8:47 PM edit delete reply

Nyx Nyx (English /ˈnɪks/;[1] Ancient Greek: Νύξ, "Night";[2] Latin: Nox) is the Greek goddess (or personification) of the night. A shadowy figure, Nyx stood at or near the beginning of creation and mothered other personified deities such as Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death), with Erebus (Darkness). Her appearances are sparse in surviving mythology, but reveal her as a figure of such exceptional power and beauty that she is feared by Zeus himself.

Nox is the same as Nyx .. BUT due to a forgetful error I named a file Nyx and another Nox.. So thats how the two of them got created behind the scenes. So yeah sometime we will show Nyx.. She will look diffrent than Nox I promise!!!

Ooh! Ooh! We get so many Cassians in clingy black leotards. (Not that I am complaining. ^_^) But, if Nyx is going to have a different look, does that mean we will get a Night in shining armor? ^_^

Ha ha ha ... good one though. :)

Could also be like a Lady of War, but in flowing robes.
Kinda like O-ren Iishi in Kill Bill.

I remember the last thing you wanted to hear was, "take it easy," so raise hell girl. If my meds don't drastically cut my cholesterol (my body makes too much of it), my cardiologist will stent me too. I'm glad I could afford to send some money your way. Get better soon. *Hugs*

In honor of the holiday festivities that are nearly upon us let me offer the following seasonally appropriate greeting, "boo."

Damn woman! That is unfortunate news.

Do take it as easily as possible and don't worry about anything else.
Sheela 30th Oct 2016, 4:58 PM edit delete reply

Yeah, she's not having the best of luck with those stents and grafts,
Tokyo Rose 30th Oct 2016, 7:54 PM edit delete reply

Terri smoked for almost 40 years, and nicotine's a vasoconstrictor. The surgeon who performed the bypass surgery noted that her blood vessels were VERY narrow; it's not too much of a surprise that the grafts are being difficult. Terri's medications are being adjusted in this interim period before the next heart cath procedure, and hopefully that will help.

Sheela 30th Oct 2016, 11:35 PM edit delete reply

Dang .. 40 years is a long time.
Timotheus 30th Oct 2016, 11:44 PM edit delete reply

Remember, while today maybe the first of your life yet to come, it also the last day of your life up to now. I always felt someone should make a reply song on that subject. (I tried but my attempts were not worth repeating after the obvious first lyric.}
chk 31st Oct 2016, 7:14 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, 40 years is a long time. I did about the same. I quit 10ish months ago and it is a bit of a bitch.
