Yay! New page. And the new vote incentive is VERY nice. Thank you, CentComm.

Still miss CeCi.

And Dolly does NOT look happy with the fact CeCi was disposed of by CentComm. I have a feeling that CentComm is NOT going to be forgiven for some of her maneuvering.
velvetsanity 7th Nov 2016, 1:17 AM edit delete reply

Understatement of the millennium there....You think *Teedee* was ready to kick ass and take names....Mama Bear is about to get medieval.
Stormwind13 7th Nov 2016, 1:05 PM edit delete reply

I think Dolly already played King Arthur (or Galahad if you would prefer), velvet. Wondering if primeval would fit better what Dolly has in mind though. :-D
Timotheus 6th Nov 2016, 9:41 PM edit delete reply

Shouldn't CeCi's image have a black boarder? Especially since it's Tokyo Rose speaking?
Centcomm 7th Nov 2016, 9:10 AM edit delete reply

I did a blue white .. black just.. didnt look right.
Timotheus 7th Nov 2016, 4:12 PM edit delete reply

Oh the artwork is fine. I was jokingly hinting that it should resemble those funeral portraits that the Japanese use.
Dragonrider 6th Nov 2016, 9:41 PM edit delete reply

VOTE YOU LAGGARDS VOTE Only 4 places to go,
Dolly looks like she is torn between wanting to spit 30 Mike Mike incendiaries at Cent Com or cry her eyes out. There is no way this time, the knock down can be considered unprofessional as a matter of fact, TeeDee might like to assist in the program. Dolly had really developed an affection for her "Daughter".
Can we please exchange characters and get Ceci back? Dolly deserves her "Daughter."(We'll let you take Kyle, sent him to Japan as TR's troublemaker errrr troubleshooter.)

Edit Note: Nice incentive, are those new characters you are bringing on line?
Sheela 7th Nov 2016, 1:52 AM edit delete reply

Heh, I seem to remember that Marcus said he would go on a date with Dr Silver if we reached #5. :D
highlander55 7th Nov 2016, 5:18 AM edit delete reply

Sheela, Without pictures it didn't happen. ;)
Stormwind13 7th Nov 2016, 8:20 AM edit delete reply

Well that is CentComm's (the artist) job, highlander. Sheela is just reminding them of their past statements.

Personally knowing what I do now though, I wonder if a dinner (and more, perhaps) between Marcus and Ada might not be more appropriate (and canon) than a dinner between Marcus and Veronica. I could see those two getting back together in comic, at least in the short term.
Centcomm 7th Nov 2016, 9:09 AM edit delete reply

yep that is on the list too. we are gonna see if we can kinda make it canon.. sorta.
Centcomm 7th Nov 2016, 9:09 AM edit delete reply

haha.. No sadly no takebacks.. As for Dollys actions on getting back home save your popcorn for that one. Although Dolly is aware she was a weapon.

and yes the incentive is 2 new characters who will be in a upcoming segment.
Stormwind13 7th Nov 2016, 9:28 AM edit delete reply

Corners the popcorn market in New Troy! Gets as much of the video pay per view market as can! :-D

This will be EPIC, ladies and gentlemen...

I found the comment chain back on page Comic 859 - Anger management... where Marcus agrees to inviting Dr Silver out if we hit Rank 5. :)
mjkj 9th Nov 2016, 1:33 AM edit delete reply

So, CentComm, did Marcus invite you to dinner for the top 10? And did you share the bottle for rank 30?

As I said last time, Rose said "her body" self destructed - that phrasing allows her mind to still be around.
Sheela 7th Nov 2016, 1:53 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, but they also made a bunch of comments that said she was gone.
Tokyo Rose 7th Nov 2016, 4:13 PM edit delete reply

Dolly did ask specifically if Ceci was still intact; I debated making it more specific yet by saying "physically intact", but the line felt awkward spoken out loud, which is how I usually test-drive dialogue.

As for what Dolly may think about Ceci's mind or personality, that question's already been answered.
Dragonrider 7th Nov 2016, 6:15 PM edit delete reply

@TR reread the pages they tend to confirm my analysis of the situation, unless I missed something.

Considering recent medical issues, that joke was completely out of line, and I didn't even think about it in those terms until I was half way home from work.

My apologies, Rose, there was no offense intended.
Sheela 10th Nov 2016, 7:09 AM edit delete reply

Are you kidding, it's inappropriateness is what made it awesome. :D

Besides, it's Tokyo Rose, she's probably adding it to the dictionary, somehow.

They need to make it official. Posthumous name change, so he can be buried under a rock that officially says "prince fuckwidget."

You nailed Dolly's expression, last panel. That's exactly how my mom looked when she was grieving for one of her own and winding up toward mad enough to chew nails and spit bullets.

...noooooo, CeCi....

Gilrandir 6th Nov 2016, 11:22 PM edit delete reply
There's a lot of very nice stuff in this version, and I do like it; but, in the spirit of honest feedback I will say there was one nuance in particular that I liked better in the @rufiangel version.

In the memory of CeCi panel, the combination of the soft focus and the presence of clothing makes it much clearer to me that what we are seeing is a Dolly memory of CeCi. The Daz version seems much more reminiscent of CeCi's final internal mindscape -- to which, of course, Dolly was never privy. It's a minor nit, of course. And I don't even know if Daz can do soft focus, but I thought I'd let you know how each of the two approaches worked for me.
Centcomm 7th Nov 2016, 9:12 AM edit delete reply

I tried to do the same thing.. I just COULD not get the same effect she did. it eather came out as a mess or to weird.. so i went with this.

and yes I love that very Rufi did too!
Gilrandir 7th Nov 2016, 9:44 AM edit delete reply
Pardon my ignorance ... programmer disease is flaring up.

Does Daz have any tools for fog, mist, smoke or clouds? Rain? What happens if you put a (nearly) colorless smoke cloud between the figure and the camera? The 'mess' you were talking about?
Centcomm 7th Nov 2016, 11:01 AM edit delete reply

... there is.. dang it.. I just remembered that .. I do have a fog effect camera .. sighs.

I used it back when Lynn and Acantha were in the bath chamber.

You have been through a lot, CentComm. So I guess you have a better reason than most for forgetting. :: HUGS::
Sheela 10th Nov 2016, 7:11 AM edit delete reply

Damn, CentComm is going to get an earful when Dolly gets home.
Stormwind13 7th Nov 2016, 9:31 AM edit delete reply

I think CentComm will be replacing dolls, Ryu Santos. The earful they get will be so much that their heads will fall off from the weight of the words poured into them!

I still wonder what CentComm's actual plan is.
Ryu Santos 7th Nov 2016, 10:09 PM edit delete reply
Aha! Its absolutely diabolical. CentComm knew Tokyo Rose would get involved at some point. So she set CeCi up to be fall girl.

Sheela 7th Nov 2016, 1:55 AM edit delete reply

Oh, I'm sure eventually she will go home, the rest of her family is there (Calliope and Minx, and several stray kittens, I'm sure.)

But yeah, Acantha needs a few repairs first.
Stormwind13 7th Nov 2016, 10:17 AM edit delete reply

All too true Sheela. I can't see Dolly leaving Calliope alone. She cared too much to do that.
Fairportfan 7th Nov 2016, 1:06 AM edit delete reply

SOMEbody is gonna have to work long and hard before - if ever - she regains Dolly's trust and loyalty.

I figure Dolly could go freelance back out in the Outback (or whatever it's called) and actually succeed at the career she was pretending to follow when she was undercover.

Maybe Teedee would like to come along.
HiFranc 7th Nov 2016, 1:36 AM edit delete reply

"The Wastes"

Given that Lynn wants to be a pilot, I saw it happening when Ceci was around. Breaker's could have been their base.
Gilrandir 7th Nov 2016, 8:19 AM edit delete reply
Dolly's trust and loyalty would seem to me to be where they have always been -- with her family, the Taylors, and by extension with their city, New Troy.

Based on the ... guarded nature of her interactions with CentComm, in my opinion she has been aware of the fable of the Frog and the Scorpion for some time now. (Though she would probably have to admit that CentComm put one over on her with the sabotage of her transport.) I don't see recent events driving any significant changes for her, because there haven't been any big surprises from Dolly's perspective. I definitely don't see her abandoning Calliope to move out to the wastes and set up her own household out there.

Maybe I'm missing the point ... what exactly are people wanting to punish CentComm for again?
Centcomm 7th Nov 2016, 9:15 AM edit delete reply

VERY good observation Gil.. and Yes .. Dolly does know what Cent is down deep. She is a war machine. and she likes to win. Period.
Sheela 10th Nov 2016, 7:14 AM edit delete reply

I still think that Dolly is annoyed with Centcomm for not being up front with information.

Dolly might have been able to do better with all the information available.
She does, after all, have a lot of experience in thinking latterally - Which may not be one of Centcomm's strong suits.
Centcomm 7th Nov 2016, 9:12 AM edit delete reply

heh.. indeed.
Sheela 10th Nov 2016, 10:15 AM edit delete reply

Centcomm is more of a direct confrontation sort of problem solver.

A bit like Marcus, really ... For him, problemshooting involves a 12 gage shotgun .. at least.
Gilrandir 10th Nov 2016, 12:59 PM edit delete reply
@Sheela -- "
Centcomm is more of a direct confrontation sort of problem solver.

Every time I read this comment, @Sheela, the thought surges up in my mind: "Is @Sheela even reading the same webcomic I am?"

With all due respect, I could not disagree more, either as far as CentComm or Marcus goes. Admittedly, both of them would appear to be committed subscribers to the policy that "There is no such thing as 'Overkill'", but that's hardly the same thing as 'direct'. (At least in my opinion.)
Sheela 10th Nov 2016, 4:54 PM edit delete reply

An indirect way of solving the problem, would be through diplomatic ties, but her plan was to send an infiltration and combat team instead ... that's the most direct solution I can think of ... well, apart from sending a drone army and flatten the place.
Gilrandir 10th Nov 2016, 6:04 PM edit delete reply
My interpretation is different, which is not to say that mine is better than yours ... just different.

In my opinion, if a person (say "John Smith") takes something that belongs to you, the direct approach is to initiate contact with John Smith and attempt recovery. Whether that attempt involves diplomatic overtures, legal writs, or armed force is irrelevant; you are directly seeking recovery and there is no doubt about who is acting, why you are acting, and what your intention is.

If you approach a third party to recover your item for you, that is more indirect. If you seek to obfuscate your involvement, that is more indirect. If you seek to mislead people about your ultimate objective, that is more indirect. Any of the above can still involve diplomacy, litigation, or force, but the degree of direct correlation between your problem and your solution to it is reduced to the degree that that connection between objective and approach is diminished. In my opinion.

I think both CentComm and Marcus are willing and able to employ indirect (my interpretation) methods to achieve their goals. I agree that often diplomatic approaches are used for indirect methods (accounting for the generally poor reputation for honesty and forthrightness enjoyed by most diplomats), but I think that is merely commonplace, not inevitable.

Calliope employed a direct diplomatic approach: "Prince Decimus, you have my daughter. Give her back." <shrug> It didn't work, but points to her for trying. (Disclaimer: I am not a sniper, nor have I received any kind of sniper training.) Marcus is SpecOps and not (as far as I know) a sniper specialist, but I'm pretty sure he would state with every degree of certainty that the last thing a sniper wants is a 'direct' confrontation with their target. Ideally the target is eliminated before ever even realizing there is a confrontation. And his (successful) efforts to use percussive therapy for TeeDee didn't directly address the underlying trauma, but nonetheless did address the situation.

Anyway, I hope that clarifies my opinion. Language is often tricky since many diffferent people can all use the same term ('direct') and mean very different things by it.

its like.. " Think goo " I was giggling over that one of roses too..
Morituri 8th Nov 2016, 9:01 AM edit delete reply
AI does indeed make for great bloatware. He typed, on a machine with 128 Gbytes of RAM, 30 Tbytes of storage, four CUDA-enabled GPU cards, and 8 CPUs, which has been running flatout with 95% GPU and 85% memory commit for the last week mostly training a neural network.

For the last hour or so, it's also been at maximum CPU chewing on a compile job on a few million lines of code, and I've been surfing the Internetz waiting for it to complete....

Suffice to say, It's November, I haven't turned on the heater yet this year. I don't want to talk about my cloud bills.

I think it'll probably continue to be true that AI will suck up all the compute power you care to throw at it.

Still, an omelet might be nice right about now. :)
Naldru 7th Nov 2016, 1:24 PM edit delete reply
I can't be sure, but I believe that the dialogue is slightly different than the last time I went through this page. This time, it says her body went and self-destructed. Doesn't say anything about the mind. There is a possibility for an interesting tea party. I assume that Tokyo Rose drinks tea.
Stormwind13 7th Nov 2016, 3:09 PM edit delete reply

We know Rose drinks tea, Naldru. We saw her do it on Have a drink - 6 August 2012 (currently page 613)! :-D Of course, Rose spiked Kyle's tea... which allowed him to survive being shot in the chest 3 times (much to Sheela's displeasure).
Gilrandir 8th Nov 2016, 10:25 AM edit delete reply
Actually, from that, I believe all we know is that Tokyo Rose's avatar drinks virtual tea. Or possibly that her doll can mime drinking tea from an empty cup. (Or a full one, it's just that we can't actually see the cup's contents here.)

We know that Rose serves tea. ^_^
Sheela 10th Nov 2016, 7:17 AM edit delete reply

So, maybe Rose serves yea, but drinks absinthe ?

And dammit, Kyle is still alive.

Note that she said Ceci's BODY was destroyed...but not her MIND. I still think her consciousness is out there in cyberspace somewhere.
Morituri 8th Nov 2016, 9:09 AM edit delete reply
I don't.
Gilrandir 8th Nov 2016, 10:37 AM edit delete reply
Let's be fair. There are a lot of belief systems out there, and many include the notion of the persistence of personae after mortal death. Additionally, the line gets muddied when you add in the science fictional notion of memory image backups for android personalities, etc. (Though we still haven't seen anything to justify TeeDee's apparently irrational fear that a restored Ada might not actually be 'Ada' any more.)

I think that few would question (at this point) that CeCi achieved 'personhood', and so (given an appropriate belief system) her consciousness undoubtedly persists out there 'somewhere'. However, I'm pretty sure that's not what most people are actually talking about. The actual focus seems to be more on the possibility of restoring her character to the narrative. In this, I agree with you, @Morituri, that I think a revival of CeCi is about as unlikely as a revival of Prince Decimus (which could, theoretically, also be done given DataChasers-level technology). I think, at this point it would weaken the narrative, so our creatrices don't intend for it to happen.

However, CeCi does have a substantially more avid and vocal fan following than Prince Decimus, so who knows what might happen during sweeps week ...? ^_^
Gilrandir 8th Nov 2016, 10:44 AM edit delete reply
Oooh ...! Awesome thought! CeCi remains among the honorably departed, but in recognition of her contributions, one of the members of Memento Mori picks up her likeness and bubbly personality while continuing the class struggle against the corrupt and powerful of Nova Roma's upper social strata. ^_^
KarToon12 8th Nov 2016, 3:53 PM edit delete reply

I DO see your point in that bringing her back might possibly hurt the narrative. But she could potentially be reincarnated as a new character. That somehow, part of her consciousness ends up in a new android, and they don't even know it (at first).
Mark_L_A 9th Nov 2016, 10:17 AM edit delete reply

From rewatching all of the old Ghost in the Shell anime's and OVA's, I think it might be possible that like Motoko between GIS and Innocence, CeCi, might be able to coalesce her personality again on the "Net"
mjkj 8th Nov 2016, 10:40 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, KarToon, I think something like Max Headroom might still be possible...
DLKmusic 8th Nov 2016, 1:10 PM edit delete reply

ooh, ooh! she could be the perky "Little Sister" that is there to remind everyone that "Big Brother is watching"!!!!!
Morituri 8th Nov 2016, 7:41 PM edit delete reply
On second thought.... Remember that there was a massive data send from the communications equipment that CeCi was in the middle of, right before she self-destructed.

It's an outside chance, but that might have been CeCi's mind state getting transmitted back to CentComm.

If we consider that CentComm knows her black angels routinely 'spark' - and allow the possibility that she feels that she has to destroy all that classified weaponry in their bodies but may not have a requirement to destroy them as persons - it's conceivable, even maybe logical, for a 'save' to get transmitted back just before destruct, if possible.

So, Ceci died. But a near-the-end copy of her memory state and personality may inhabit a new and different body back in New Troy.

I don't know if Ceci would find the thought comforting. She's still dead. But if she knew there'd be somebody out there who's equipped with all her memories and personality - she might have found that knowledge comforting.
Sheela 10th Nov 2016, 7:23 AM edit delete reply

Considering that Centcomm can just *make* another CeCi from a base personality seed, I don't hink it's very likely that Centcom would make a personality backup.

Though she might want a memory backup, just so she would know what heppened up until the end - Intelligence is important.

Should CeCi somehow recover, I think it's more likely that she would do so through theChurch of the First Circuit, of which Ada is a member, if I understand it correctly.

Very nice Patreon incentive at the +$10 level, by the way @Centcomm. I'm thinking maybe a calendar series? "The Topless Flowers of Ilium"?
