And the plot thickens...
Stormwind13 6th Dec 2016, 9:19 PM edit delete reply

Well we have a plan of action... and a complication (and another answer to an 'earlier' question).

Glad Cassy made it out, despite 'resting' her eyes she was good people. :-)
HiFranc 7th Dec 2016, 12:23 AM edit delete reply

Who is Cassy again?
Timotheus 7th Dec 2016, 12:49 AM edit delete reply

One of Julie's staff nurses who helped with Lynn when she first came in.
HiFranc 7th Dec 2016, 1:58 AM edit delete reply

Thank you.
Just_IDD 7th Dec 2016, 8:31 AM edit delete reply
You would only know of her if you didnt do a re-read. Lynn's arrival in NovaRoma was extended by 5-10 comics. The malfunctioning egg-stealing auto-doc was removed and replaced by an allergic reaction to a bone rebuilding chemical. There is a slight glitch in the reading of one of the later pages (forgot which sorry) that wasn't changed where the malfunctioning autodoc is mentioned. So if you read this later it may be fixed by now.
I did the rereading during heart surgery recovery and noticed it then.
HiFranc 7th Dec 2016, 9:13 AM edit delete reply

I did read the new bit but that was shortly after it was rewritten. I don't exactly have a good memory for names and faces. In fact, I had to look up Connie's name in the cast list this morning.
Sheela 7th Dec 2016, 10:45 AM edit delete reply

The eggs ... THE EGGS !!!!

Oh hey Rose, want a slice ?

grrrrrr...
Centcomm 7th Dec 2016, 3:14 PM edit delete reply

OH no i hope you are gonna be ok (( OK 2016 stop messing with people!! ))
Just_IDD 7th Dec 2016, 3:39 PM edit delete reply
Centcomm, it was during *your* heart stuff recovery! I'm glad you are getting better! the nearly full depth archive dive was so I could get my Datachasers fix and refresh my brain on the story as a whole vs a few pages a week.
Timotheus 7th Dec 2016, 4:15 PM edit delete reply

I've found it helpful to reread the whole story every few months to stay caught up on the back story alterations and refreshed as to who's who.
Centcomm 8th Dec 2016, 12:16 AM edit delete reply

Oh .. I repeat No more 2016 !! leave me alone!!
Tokyo Rose 8th Dec 2016, 3:46 PM edit delete reply

2016 got one more.

John Glenn passed away today.

EDIT: Two more. Greg Lake (of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer) also passed.

Fuck off, 2016.

Now I'm really really sad.

John Glenn one of my heroes as a child.

Greg Lake a member of one of my favorite bands (ELP)
Dragonrider 6th Dec 2016, 9:24 PM edit delete reply

OH Shit, doubled, tripled and in spades.

When did you change the icon on the update noification to have Ceci not Lynn in it? Nice Mother Daughter pic.

Who the hell else has their own private army in Nova Roma?
Maximus, Douchie and now Setorius, did the Dog Catchers have an Army too?
Guest 7th Dec 2016, 2:05 AM edit delete reply
In this sort of government, I expect that all high-ranking individuals have bodyguards--and the higher the more.

You just named several people that dine with the prince.
Dragonrider 7th Dec 2016, 10:15 AM edit delete reply

The Dog Catchers dine with the Prince??
Sheela 7th Dec 2016, 10:47 AM edit delete reply

Considering that the dog catchers have to handle Murder Turds too, you betcha they got an army !

And of course Setorius would have some fighters with him, don't forget that the Church of Genetic Purity is also field medics for the army, they would make a lot of friends with wounded soldiers that would have a vested interest in keeping their medics alive against .. well .. everything!
Morituri 7th Dec 2016, 10:24 PM edit delete reply
"It is a capital mistake to march into a battle assuming without evidence that there are only two sides." -- Patrician Veterinari

I have, as yet, seen no evidence that Setorius is on a side which will oppose them. I think he may be the sort who is on his OWN side, and at the very least he won't want Democlus to go to waste.
Stormwind13 6th Dec 2016, 9:26 PM edit delete reply

Septimus... I'm guessing he is the young mountain in the middle (does he remind anyone else of Maxus?). He certainly looks... formidable. :-)
Visvires 7th Dec 2016, 2:28 AM edit delete reply
"Designed to be"? There may not be a coincidence, there.
Sheela 7th Dec 2016, 10:49 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, no doubt he was part of the same program that created Maxus, or possibly a later one.

What *I* wants to know, is what were two young ladies doing alone with a prize fighter ? And where they in a bedroom ? :D
Morituri 7th Dec 2016, 10:11 PM edit delete reply
And here I was thinkin', Steroid-grown peoplemonsters are usually impotent.

But hey, this is ten-or-so centuries on. They're probably not doin' steroids anymore, or have developed some that don't have the nasty side effects. Maybe this guy's whole deal is carefully composed genetics.

And now I'm wondering if he's gay.
Stormwind13 6th Dec 2016, 9:38 PM edit delete reply

Setorius just HAD to say it didn't he? Someone corral Sheela and take her matches away from her, before that aid station goes up in flames! :-P
Sheela 7th Dec 2016, 10:52 AM edit delete reply

Fire ? What fire ?
.... wasn't me! I didn't do it!

Mark_L_A 6th Dec 2016, 10:34 PM edit delete reply

Setorius prizes "efficiency", and it would be inefficient for him to kill Julia because he was the person responsible for her becoming a dr in Roma instead of being Decimus' slave.

And Sheela, NO! NO MATCHES! And is that a flame thrower you're wearing?
Ryu Santos 6th Dec 2016, 11:46 PM edit delete reply

Im on stand by. Any fire will be put down with extreme prejudice.
Mark_L_A 7th Dec 2016, 2:31 PM edit delete reply

Thankee Ryu. If we're not careful Sheela will light everything on fire to try to cook her eggs.
antrik 7th Dec 2016, 3:10 PM edit delete reply
Lynn's eggs. Let's be historically accurate here ;-)
Centcomm 7th Dec 2016, 3:16 PM edit delete reply

Rose is going to be twitching over that one..
Sheela 7th Dec 2016, 3:39 PM edit delete reply

They make for a delightful omelet full of neuroses and twitches. :)
And frankly, I think Setorius would be delighted to have someone to patch up.

As for the flamethrower, do you like it ? I think it matches my fur brilliantly. :)
Ryu Santos 7th Dec 2016, 6:39 PM edit delete reply

Flamethrowers are for amateurs and are so passé.
Mark_L_A 8th Dec 2016, 9:54 PM edit delete reply

Tokyo Rose 8th Dec 2016, 3:42 PM edit delete reply

May all you egg-hugging jokesters get mild food poisoning from the next egg you eat. Nothing major. I just want to know you're all welded to a toilet for six hours or so as your life passes before your eyes and out your ass in a torrent of stench that would stun a nose-blind hyena.

Aw, just admit it Rose, you love yourself some eggs. :)

Will Julia and Miraiko arrive first?

Centcomm 7th Dec 2016, 3:16 PM edit delete reply

Good question lets watch and see? :D
HiFranc 7th Dec 2016, 2:00 AM edit delete reply

Talking about the church, isn't Connie under their protection? How is she faring?
Stormwind13 7th Dec 2016, 6:14 AM edit delete reply

Connie and Mr. Black should be forted up in their transport. It should be prepped to launch on a nano-seconds notice. I pray that they aren't out in this mess, as that is NOT an environment they are trained for.
Gilrandir 7th Dec 2016, 9:02 AM edit delete reply
I don't think it has been revealed (in-strip) what sort of training Mr. Black may or may not have had. ^_^ I'm sure, if you asked him, he'd say that he leaves that sort of stuff to other people who get paid for it -- which doesn't rule out the possibility that at some time in his mis-spent youth he was the sort of person who got paid for it. ^_^

Of course, those privileged to have sat in at @Centcomm's tabletop DataChasers RPG might have additional info about what's on his character sheet. Connie, I agree with you @Stormwind13, is unlikely to have much in the way of formal combat training. Of course we don't know what sort of civil defense skills (CPR, First Aid, Weapons Familiarity: StunStick, Basic Systems Operations) might be built into all New Troy androids from Zero. Once you can wire skills in more or less for free, why not load them up with socially useful skills before ever rolling them out?
Dragonrider 7th Dec 2016, 10:26 AM edit delete reply

@Gilrader as NT Androids don't seem to be built by Centcomm factories I would suggest they are purpose built with no paramilitary skill sets. Why give them programming that would conflict with their basic inhibitions against harming humans. What Cent builds for "Civic" use are probably purpose built also, why load extra software in them, have plenty of Droids for that, those would be loaded with everything.
Sheela 7th Dec 2016, 10:54 AM edit delete reply

It would make sense if they had basic defense skills, in case they were supposed to keep a child safe from a wild animal, or a thug.

Also, basic first aid skills would be almost a certainty.
Gilrandir 7th Dec 2016, 12:50 PM edit delete reply
I'm not sure I understand your point, @Dragonrider. We know that New Troy builds androids -- it's one of the many things Calliope Taylor is supposed to be really good at. We know that androids built in New Troy are built as citizens, not slaves or robots, which means they have the full range of life choices and career opportunities available to them -- subject to opportunity and the need to repay their body-debt.

I didn't see, on my examples list, anything that would conflict with any preprogrammed directives, and we know that inhibitors are used in only special, controlled cases in New Troy -- unlike Nova Roma. Since we have seen no limit to the amount of skills that can be loaded in a synthbrain, and once you have the first copy there's no effective cost to infinite duplication, why not load the starting synthbrains up (at no additional charge) with skills that will make them effective in any number of civilian and civil defense scenarios, should a calamity occur?
Mark_L_A 7th Dec 2016, 2:37 PM edit delete reply

I don't think NT Arndroids are just loaded with all types of skills from the get go.

Remember in the flashback to how Dolly came to be the Taylor guardian, she added more skill packages she had to PAY for instead of purchasing a newer more top of the line body. And even then she needed to study those implanted skills and practice them to make them "Hers"

Just because they are mechanically based doesn't mean they can use any uploaded skills immediately and proficiently.

They still have to run through the various steps to "Learn" the skill and become proficient. They just do it more quickly than an unaugmented human would.

While you or I might need months and months of training, they could download and have the rudiments in hours or days, that doesn't mean they are proficient though.
Gilrandir 7th Dec 2016, 3:00 PM edit delete reply
I don't believe I said they did load a plethora of skills at inception, I meant to ask why they would not. And I definitely do recall Dolly paying for skill packages, but I did not imply that all skills were (or should be) free. Simply that it would seem logical for a specific subset of selected skills to be subsidized and made a precondition for inclusion in any New Troy android. Just as all cell phones have to support '911' (or the equivalent) emergency service, no matter who makes them -- that doesn't mean all cell phone calls are free. Dolly was buying (as I understand it) specialized advanced professional skills suitable to her role as a high-end Guardian, not basic First Aid. Presumably there are licensing fees and royalties to be paid to the developers for those.

As to the need for practice ... I'm not sure we've seen complete consistency here. I've seen what I consider indications that skills are immediately available on download and integration for standardized chassis. Dolly's new body learning curve can be explained away by the fact that she was in a prototype chassis for which no one had previously developed the required skill and reflex set. Integration seems to be a matter of tens of seconds (or less), not hours or days. It might just be narrative driven: skills take longer to acquire when extra dramatic tension is needed, and are available instantly when a sudden influx of competency provides a narrative twist. We have never seen even the merest hint (that I recall) that an android would ever have to forget or abandon anything in order to acquire new skills or memories, suggesting that the synthbrain capacity is (effectively) unlimited, given an unlimited source of skills for download.
Centcomm 7th Dec 2016, 3:21 PM edit delete reply

Defense mode is something all androids have. its mostly a defend self / run like hell package. Every NT android can throw a punch or use basic firearms just like you and I but they doesn't make them super skilled at it.

As was posited earlyer yes.. once skills sets are " uploaded " if its not a " raw data " skill it must be practiced and learned and made part of there body. So Dolly loaded how to side kick but she practiced until she could do it perfectly.. And it takes them about a third the time of a human to process the skill.
Gilrandir 7th Dec 2016, 3:30 PM edit delete reply
What about TeeDee and her 'sprite package combat routines'? She obviously didn't have full capability pre-integration. Integration appeared to take less than a second, after which she appeared fully proficient with all the advanced hand-to-hand techniques of the combat package.
Centcomm 7th Dec 2016, 3:38 PM edit delete reply

She had the training and such she was refusing to " Sync " with the body and so was trying to use her skills without a 100% link to the body.
Tokyo Rose 7th Dec 2016, 3:49 PM edit delete reply

@Gilrandir

If you've been taught how to drive a manual transmission, you know the basics, and can theoretically apply those basics to many similar motor vehicle. Teedee's learned how to fight, and her last body had combat packages already because her role in S&R covers being combat support if needed.
antrik 7th Dec 2016, 3:32 PM edit delete reply
Since it has been established that Androids "glitching" is not entirely uncommon, loading them up with deadly abilities "just in case" may not seem the best of ideas...

Also, who says additional skills are "free"? Every skill needs some capacity; and capacity is not unlimited -- it would leave less room for skills that are actually useful for civilians.
Centcomm 7th Dec 2016, 3:44 PM edit delete reply

There are some skills that simply cant be taught or given to a Android. ill just leave that here.
Gilrandir 7th Dec 2016, 3:46 PM edit delete reply
Which 'deadly ability' did I propose? I seem to have forgotten ...

Also, I did address the audience perspective on the capacity issue. The creatrices, of course, know whether there are actual limits to which we simply have not yet been exposed; but I have seen no evidence to support your statement that capacity is limited, @antrik.
antrik 7th Dec 2016, 4:33 PM edit delete reply
@Gilrandir upon rereading, you indeed haven't actually mentioned deadly abilities -- I just kinda extrapolated subconsciously, since given the situation, the threats Connie could be facing right now would be from heavily armed soldiers (or even Cassians); so any defence abilities actually meaningful here would have to be of the potentially deadly kind.

As for the limited capacity, I hadn't seen your latest follow-up yet when I wrote my reply. And what I said is just my own conjecture. I believe it to be a reasonable assumption though, since with some kind of neural network -- which I suspect synth-brains to be, from what we've seen of their properties so far -- any non-trivial skill will realistically need substantial capacity... And our dear creators seem to be aiming for realism in general, as long as it doesn't conflict with telling a good story :-)
Mark_L_A 8th Dec 2016, 10:08 PM edit delete reply

Think of a Synth Brain like your computer. Only much faster.

If you have a large program that requires a lot of RAM and lots of hard drive space your computer slows down when you run the program until it is fully loaded.

Add in that the Synth Brain uses a LOT of it's processing power just to maintain sentience, there has to be a limit on just how much can be loaded at any one time.

I know when I load my various editing programs, video, photo audio, my system slows down even with 16GB of RAM and 2 Quad Core CPU's.

Now a Synth Brain is probably several orders of time faster than my computer with multiple several orders of fast "RAM" to run it's programming, it still takes some time, probably not much but a measurable amount of time to load up another set of skills, probably while it have another skill set already in use.

I know that while I am a trained EMT, I was also a Volunteer Firefighter and a Cop. While responding to an accident once, it took me several moments to get my brain from one track, (Secure the scene, control traffic) to triage the victims in the car and start extrication.

I imagine it would be the same for an android.
Gilrandir 8th Dec 2016, 10:35 PM edit delete reply
You are making reasonable extrapolations based on real-world examples of modern day computers and pure strain human meat processors. That is not the same as being able to point to any supporting evidence in canon. My contention is that in-canon there is nothing to support these extrapolations and some indirect reasons to doubt them. It is certainly true that the absence of evidence is not the same as the evidence of absence; however, we also have the famous lines from The Adventure of Silver Blaze:

Holmes: "To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
Gregory: "The dog did nothing in the night-time."
Holmes: "That was the curious incident."

If synthbrains were capacity-bound for either speed or storage, there are some indications (in my opinion) we should be seeing of which, frankly, I have seen no indication. Given the many other superiorities of metal over meat in DataChasers, it seems inappropriate to just assume there are limitations without any basis for that assumption. Synthbrains have already been shown not to function according to the rules for Turing Machine computations, and so differ from your desktop not just as a matter of degree, but as a matter of kind. (All modern day computers can be reduced to machines conforming to Turing Machine principles, as far as I know.)
Mark_L_A 11th Dec 2016, 8:44 PM edit delete reply

On that, I'd have no clue and throw it up to our authortrixes. (Is that even a word?) for any possibly resolution.

Nothing to see here. Just a couple EMS with a critically wounded soldier. Let them use the aid station and they'll be on their way.

Don't mind the absence of collars or carrying of weapons; it's an emergency. Things are on fire, y'know.

I want to say thank you for the person almost correctly doing a fireman's carry. At least nearly perfect, if you're really doing it you're hunched over much farther but then they can't be having a conversation and you can't be looking at their face. Carrying the way it's shown, you have to be like Superman. Which I guess she could be with the way Rose protects her assets.
Mark_L_A 7th Dec 2016, 2:39 PM edit delete reply

Yeah, I was looking at that and thinking "Where is the safety strap?" and why isn't her center of gravity more forward.

That has to be hell on her knees and lower back right now.

I was taking the uprightness to be artistic license. No one wants characters looking down or hunched over when showing communication. It's more than strenght though, you cannot defeat center of gravity no matter how strong you are. Mark_LA is correct that a strap can be used as body support assist and slung under the buttocks.. That super strength comes into play where she is holding on to his armored calfs
