To avoid any confusion from people who are already reading sinister interpretations into Tona's description of her profession:

She is not a torturer. She is not an interrogator. She is a dominatrix. People pay her exorbitant amounts of money to mistreat them for the purposes of sexual satisfaction.

Okay, carry on.

::CRASH:: And the sides collide.

Tona looks really good.

Well at least Miraiko didn't use Democlus as a projectile weapon! :-D

Recreational scolding Yes Mistress!

Thank you for the image that is now floating around in my head.
Centcomm 8th Dec 2016, 10:29 PM edit delete reply

Hehe actually someone did a pic of Doctor Setorius sans shirt. hes built like a dancer. All wiry muscle.
Ryu Santos 8th Dec 2016, 11:18 PM edit delete reply

*urk* Now the image is even worse.

The image in your head is not incorrect.

" bow" hai Aijin rozu san ... " waits "..
Sheela 9th Dec 2016, 11:01 AM edit delete reply

I have to admit, I did not imagine Setorius as a sub/masochist.
Tokyo Rose 9th Dec 2016, 3:32 PM edit delete reply

Setorius doesn't hire her to get his rocks off. He's an extremely powerful and intensely intellectual man, and realizes that he needs the occasional reminder that he may make mistakes, but his subordinates are unlikely to issue such reminders out of fear or respect.

So he basically pays her to criticize him, along the lines of:

"Your experimental process is disgraceful! Look at these sloppy variables! Haven't you ever heard of a control group?!"

and

"Your testing protocols are sub-par! Medical school was WASTED on you!"

Stuff like that. No whips or chains. He does not at any point wear a dog collar and a studded black leather codpiece.

(But now the image of him doing so is in your head, isn't it?)
Ryu Santos 9th Dec 2016, 3:50 PM edit delete reply

Its been bloody stuck in my brain since 0024 this morning.
velvetsanity 9th Dec 2016, 3:58 PM edit delete reply

So my initial impression (before reading your dominatrix comment) was correct! She really does moonlight at 1-900-INSULTS! :D
Gilrandir 9th Dec 2016, 4:03 PM edit delete reply
For those fans of the show "CSI" there was the plot line involving Dr. Grissom and Lady Heather. An intriguing relationship for each which (I suspect) was unlike any other relationship they might have had, but was nonetheless intimate and rewarding in its own way.

(Disclaimer: I personally know practically nothing about this and don't have any friends or acquaintances involved in the trade.)
Remember: For all the power exchange that may occur 'in-scene', a professional dominatrix is a paid employee. One has to believe that the specific details of any ongoing arrangement are tailored to the needs and desires of the client. Presumably, they are also people, and may even have a personal life divorced from their paying profession. Lastly (though based on @Tokyo Rose's comment this is very unlikely) they could have a relationship, but not have it be a sexual one. Maybe Tona is Setorius' niece? ^_^ Hey! It could happen! ^_^

(Can't you just imagine the scene around the Thanksgiving table? "More sweet potatoes, Uncle Setorius?" ^_^)
Centcomm 9th Dec 2016, 4:53 PM edit delete reply

I loved those episodes with lady heather :D it was beyond awesome :D

The Image of Setorus as a sub has been stuck in my head ever since I saw the term "Recreational Scolder".

Thank you, Rose, for pointing out that no matter how Clean I think my thoughts are, there's still a pervert buried inside!

Ryu Santos 9th Dec 2016, 11:56 AM edit delete reply

Ew,ew,ew. I had a co-worker who was a part time Dom. I asked her about what it entailed once. Let's just say I'm not into that sort of thing and leave it at that."shudders"
Centcomm 9th Dec 2016, 4:32 PM edit delete reply

The right Term for a female Dominate is Domme .. Rather than Dom the latter being for a male.

BDSM 101 giggles .. :D
Ryu Santos 11th Dec 2016, 10:01 AM edit delete reply

I really didn't pay too much attention to the proper terminology. I was too busy having my sense of perversion being expanded beyond its capacity.
Gilrandir 11th Dec 2016, 11:57 AM edit delete reply
So ... talking about perversion gets parts of you expanded? ...

Good to know. ^_^
Mark_L_A 11th Dec 2016, 8:30 PM edit delete reply

My ex was/is a Professional Domme. Yet our personal time was 99% Vanilla. What really messed with head was that she never had "Relations" with her clients.

If they wanted that they hired someone else.

But she made a "LOT" abusing and other things to her clients.
Mark_L_A 8th Dec 2016, 9:49 PM edit delete reply

And Democlus sounds like he is starting to awaken.
Ryu Santos 8th Dec 2016, 9:56 PM edit delete reply

A fairly rough one as well.
Gilrandir 8th Dec 2016, 9:58 PM edit delete reply
I do likes me a well-turned ... phrase. Kudos to whoever came up with 'recreational scolding'. ^_^

@Centcomm, were you hiding Tona on purpose? In about half of the group shots on this and the preceding page, I'd expect her to be (at least partially) visible, but she appears either missing or completely obscured to me.
Centcomm 8th Dec 2016, 10:28 PM edit delete reply

*whistles innocently. * actually i forgot to put her in the scene for a couple of panels.. :)
Just_IDD 9th Dec 2016, 3:24 AM edit delete reply
So she calls it recreational, what would the Cassian's call it? Though for that particular task, calling it recreational makes it sound more disturbing.
Tokyo Rose 9th Dec 2016, 6:14 AM edit delete reply

'Twas I that came up with "recreational scolding". :)

(And it depends on which Cassian you ask, Just_IDD; some of them are more prudish than others.)

Something interesting to note: Septimus has a collar ... and a sword ... and isn't currently in an arena. Hmmmm.....
Centcomm 8th Dec 2016, 10:28 PM edit delete reply

Yes.. hes a Slave. much like Maxus was.
Gilrandir 8th Dec 2016, 10:49 PM edit delete reply
Maxus implied that, during his stint as a gladiator, he had an owner -- which to me made it sound like he was the property of an individual and not an asset of a large organization, such as the Church. If Septimus is a slave as Maxus was, does that mean that he has an individual owner as well, and is not simply "Church Property"?

Was Setorius Maxus' owner at the time he (Maxus) was introduced to Irene? Alternatively, is Septimus' owner currently present in the Archpriest's entourage? And, if not, does he know that Septimus is running around with a power blade? I thought that was a no-no for slaves who aren't actually in the arena at the time.

If any of these are too spoiler-y, I will happily wait for the answers. (Well ... I lie. Not 'happily'. ^_^ But I will wait as politely as I can.) I don't want to appear unduly demanding.
Tokyo Rose 9th Dec 2016, 6:17 AM edit delete reply

Since none of the answers actually come up in the story at any foreseeable point, I'll go ahead and dish.

* Septimus is Church property. He's specifically detailed to their security force alongside the Paladins.

* Maxus was never owned by Setorius at any time.

* Due to his role as Church security, Septimus has an exemption from the usual rules regarding slaves and weapons.
Gilrandir 9th Dec 2016, 6:56 AM edit delete reply
Thank you.

EDIT: Another question, then: Is that exemption something that any master might apply for on behalf of their (presumably trustworthy) slave, or is the Church considered above Roman law in some circumstances? This might be very relevant in what's about to happen.
Tokyo Rose 9th Dec 2016, 3:26 PM edit delete reply

Any master can apply for such an exemption to have their slave licensed as a bodyguard, but the review process is extremely rigorous and such licenses are very rarely granted. It's easier to hire a bodyguard than buy one.
LurkerAbove 11th Dec 2016, 2:26 AM edit delete reply
If Septimus is expected to get into fights, I'd give him some more gear,
e.g. helmet, shield, light armor.
Marcus Ramesy 8th Dec 2016, 10:05 PM edit delete reply

HiFranc 9th Dec 2016, 12:30 AM edit delete reply

I've simulated a few alternatives in my head and I understand why Miraiko reacted the way she did. At close quarters, the priests can overpower them easily. Playing their old roles is not an option given that Miraiko doesn't have a collar and the timetable they are working to.

Julia take your cues from Miraiko - she's the expert.

AHA!!! I know it was Lirv's Tona! Hehe lovely cameo!

Ohhhh fight?
:3

Lovely page as usual <3333
Tokyo Rose 10th Dec 2016, 5:44 PM edit delete reply

The draft Cent gave me said that Tona was a Senator. My first question:

"What the fuck's a member of the Senate doing anywhere near the Black Palace's medical area at four in the fucking morning?"

(Answer was, basically, "Um...")

My second question:

"And why the hell is she dressed in garter stockings and a leotard?"

(Answer was a gripe about the wardrobe or lack thereof available for the particular base model used for the character.)

Rewrites then ensued.
HeSerpenty 10th Dec 2016, 6:01 PM edit delete reply

LOL! Brilliant! X'DDD
Gilrandir 10th Dec 2016, 6:56 PM edit delete reply
We always have the example of Ilona Staller (La Cicciolina), the former Italian Member of Parliament. As to the first -- presumably members of the Roman Senate have access to the Black Palace's medical facilities, especially if they are caught nearby when civil unrest breaks out. A member of her staff might easily have been caught in the hubbub and she came along to ensure he received proper treatment.

As to the second -- ... campaigning for re-election? ^_^

(I've got your back, @Centcomm! ^_^)

However, I agree with you, @Tokyo Rose, this is probably better. I haven't even seen it yet, but I agree with you. ^_^
DLKmusic 10th Dec 2016, 11:23 PM edit delete reply

Don't get me wrong, Rose, I love the re-write. However, to answer you two questions....

1. What is a senator doing at 4 in the morning near the black palace's medical area? (more specifically, near Setorus)?

a; Playing politics

2: why is she dressed in garter stockings and a leotard?

a: she's, uhm, playing politics...

(don't hurt me)
Tahg 10th Dec 2016, 7:46 PM edit delete reply
So, maybe it's just my poor memory, or maybe we haven't seen these characters in a while, and probably it's my poor facial/body recognition...
but can someone give perhaps give me a left to right list of the characters in the first and last panels? I recognize pretty much none of them.
Gilrandir 10th Dec 2016, 8:21 PM edit delete reply
(Disclaimer: These are just my opinions, recollections, and guesses. The creatrices will know better than I what the true answers are.)

First panel:
*Cassy (Cassie?) - a medical assistant who worked with Julia.
Paladin #1 - a spear carrier
*Setorius - Archpriest of the Church in Nova Roma. Appears to be the equivalent of their Surgeon General and Archbisop combined.
Septimus - a slave and bodyguard. Probably genetically enhanced for combat.
Sephra - companion to Cassy.
Paladin #2 - a spear carrier
Tona (not shown) - companion to Setorius

Last panel:
*Julia - a medical doctor and minister(?) in the Church of New Rome
*Miraiko - a deep cover agent for Tokyo Rose, until recently installed as a slave in Julia's household. Her cover is now blown and she and Julia appear to have forged an alliance of equals (more or less) with the intent of safely leaving New Rome.
*Democlus - a guardsman previously assigned to protect Acantha.

Names marked with an asterisk (*) indicate characters we've seen in earlier comics around the time of Lynn's arrival in New Rome. Hope that helps.
