And in this corner weighing 121 lbs we present,"The Shinedo Spitfire" "Fast Axe" Miraiako. In her Debut Western Hemisphere appearance.
Just_IDD 12th Dec 2016, 2:33 AM edit delete reply
I believe the "Whirling Dervish already has at least one squad of blubes that she tore through without getting anything on her person. I'm reasonably certain she is boosted. They wouldn't stand much chance. It was mentioned on the page before they found Democlus. Though I wonder if the axes were something Rose sent, or if it was a loot drop when she killed the Hatchet Man? Anyway times a wasting and Miraiko wants to get busy chop-chop.
Centcomm 12th Dec 2016, 8:41 AM edit delete reply

Mirakio picked those goody's up herself.

Shes a very naughty girl :D
Gilrandir 12th Dec 2016, 1:09 PM edit delete reply
Julia should have got her the bodyguard license. ^_^ (Yes, I know. That would defeat the purpose of having her appear to be a harmless bit of eye candy.)
Centcomm 12th Dec 2016, 1:57 PM edit delete reply

Mirako played the slightly cute goofy girl from shiado slave girl that anyone who knew her ( in the line of her job ) saw

they never saw the calculated and educated side of her.. except occasionally Julia.
knuut 11th Dec 2016, 9:11 PM edit delete reply
I'm having a 'Dr. No' flashback.
Dragonrider 11th Dec 2016, 9:12 PM edit delete reply

Yeah the silver hand was just thinking along the same lines.
Stormwind13 11th Dec 2016, 9:13 PM edit delete reply

Well Miraiko has been busted. Now to see how many of them survive it. Though it sounds like Setorius is trying to get everyone to play nice.

Yeah, won't anyone think of the poor janitors? I mean, it is already going to be an overtime job cleaning things up down here (especially if Miraiko has been adding to the body count). If this ends up as badly as it could, it will really be messy (and I hate to think of Julia, Miraiko, Cassy and even Tona all chopped up. :-\)
Ryu Santos 11th Dec 2016, 10:53 PM edit delete reply

I hope it's not messy.
Nobody cares about the lowly janitorial staff unless something isn't cleaned quickly or properly.
Just_IDD 12th Dec 2016, 4:03 AM edit delete reply
The longer I look at this, I think that Miraiko could probably get both Palidins, one for certain. Everyone but Julia and Septimus are holding their weapons left handed, which leaves their right sides open. Miraiko stance will take her to the palidin's right. That means they have to reaim once she starts moving. As she closes with the first palidin and gets inside his guard, his buddy and the Recreational Scolder will be in a line, effectively screening eachother. As she kills the first, she can use his body to shield herself from the second and probably get him as well. The problem at that point is she would have crossed in front of Sepimus. That would leave her flank open to his attack. The RS would be in trouble at that point too because guns are not good melee weapons and she is stupidly crouching which makes her less maneuverable. She should be giving herself more separation, not less.
Mark_L_A 11th Dec 2016, 9:35 PM edit delete reply

Setorius? the Voice of Reason?
Gilrandir 11th Dec 2016, 9:49 PM edit delete reply
When has Setorius been anything but the voice of reason? Miraiko seems a bit uncharacteristically ... pusillanimous. Perhaps the emotional strain on her is more severe than she has been letting on?
Fairportfan 11th Dec 2016, 10:49 PM edit delete reply

Ummm ... "pusillanimous"?

That means "cowardly". Doesn't seem to fit.
Gilrandir 11th Dec 2016, 10:54 PM edit delete reply
You're right. Vocabulary fail. Perhaps "pugnacious" instead?
Just_IDD 12th Dec 2016, 2:37 AM edit delete reply
Perhaps Pugilistic -- people poking power?
Gilrandir 11th Dec 2016, 10:05 PM edit delete reply
Something that seems a little bit 'off' to me (although it may just be another example of excellent Nova Roma decision making ...) is that it seems unlikely the paladin would recognize Miraiko as a slave without also recognizing her mistress, Julia. Since Julia is known to have been an associate of Setorius, the demand to drop weapons immediately seems a bit ... peremptory to me. Designed to escalate tensions and increase the threat to his charge, rather than simply asking them to lower their weapons.

I wonder if we are going to find out that Setorius has known that Miraiko has been an agent-in-place for some time now?
Dragonrider 11th Dec 2016, 11:16 PM edit delete reply

Just a thought, a revolt is going on, he faces a "slave" free of her collar and armed with some type energy weapon, she is backed up by an armed person known to have feelings of sympathy for slaves and under class. His thought process, they are an active part of the revolt, and a threat to his principle. He recohnizes Julia as a Doctor and knows medical skills are needed therefore he calls for them to drop weapons rather than shooting first.
Gilrandir 11th Dec 2016, 11:28 PM edit delete reply
I was fine with "Keep Back", but unless he's moonlighting in law enforcement "Drop your weapons" in the middle of an uprising seems foolish and pointless. The only people likely to comply are the ones you didn't need to worry about, anyway. Making disarming a precondition of coming closer makes sense, too; but Julia and Miraiko seemed quite willing to stay where they were and let Setorius pass unhindered.

The above are, as always, only my opinions.
Dragonrider 12th Dec 2016, 12:55 AM edit delete reply

Miraiko put Democlus down armed herself with energy weapons, Julia is toting a portable planet killer larger than he is carrying. He is trying to save her medical skills for the Imperium, drop the weapons seems reasonable, while protecting his principle.
Centcomm 12th Dec 2016, 8:43 AM edit delete reply

Julia is carrying a standard issue plasma rifle common to the infantry.
Dragonrider 12th Dec 2016, 1:26 PM edit delete reply

It looks big anyway
Stormwind13 11th Dec 2016, 10:09 PM edit delete reply

Is that a power arc from Septimus' sword in the first panel? If so, that is some serious juice there. Might explain (some) of Miraiko's belligerence.
Gilrandir 11th Dec 2016, 10:40 PM edit delete reply
We see it in panel 3 of the previous page, as well. Not to mention that Miraiko's axes are throwing off their own arcs. Not knowing the capabilities of those weapons, I can't say as to how threatening that should appear. I'd like to believe, however, it is at least slightly less threatening at a distance of twenty or so feet than the aimed assault carbines wielded by the two paladins and Tona. ^_^ Julia has been kind enough to deflect the muzzle of her assault carbine. I wonder if anyone other than Setorius will notice? ^_^
Just_IDD 12th Dec 2016, 3:21 AM edit delete reply
Julia has not been keeping 'this end towards enemy' as a result its pointing in an unhpful direction. However Setorius is nothing if not observant, I'd be willing to bet he has perfect recall on names and faces. Clumsy people don't last around the Prince, but he certainly noticed who dropped the wine bottle at dinner. When someone very not clumsy makes an error in a critical situation he he certainly would notice. Also he seems to have professional concern for Julia's well being. Even if he doesn't know Rose, someone certainly paved the way for Miraiko to be where she is, and he knows how well she cares for Julia.
Centcomm 12th Dec 2016, 8:44 AM edit delete reply

Septmus has a power blade and Mirakio has a pair of power axes.
Gilrandir 12th Dec 2016, 9:46 AM edit delete reply
Did she name her weapons "Vengeance" & "Mercy"? ^_^. She wouldn't want to name one "Kindness", because that would be random. ^_^ Of course, @Dragonrider would be out there campaigning for "Unnatural". ^_^

She could name one "Hacks" and one "Whacks", but what good would a wax axe be anyway? ^_^

Apologies to all for this digression ... I am merely at play in the Fields of the Word.
Dragonrider 12th Dec 2016, 1:29 PM edit delete reply

Better yet how about Hope and Charity? If you have faith, you can hope for charity from the her.
Gilrandir 12th Dec 2016, 1:35 PM edit delete reply
I don't think so. When you are wielding two weapons, you have to decide which weapon you'll commit to the attack, and which weapon you reserve for defense. By giving them proper names, Miraiko can make sure to properly decide if she wants to commit Axe of Vengeance, or Axe of Mercy. The random Axe of Kindness aren't appropriate here, and the Unnatural Axe belong in Folder 201. ^_^
SeanR 12th Dec 2016, 1:57 PM edit delete reply
They're probably named "Stratocaster" and "Les Paul"
DLKmusic 12th Dec 2016, 6:06 PM edit delete reply

@SeanR My Best guitar is a 1974 Stratocaster (I am the original owner by the way). Her name is Rebecca, and if someone decided to take Rebecca into the middle of the fight, I don't care how cute they are, they will DIE!!!!

Don't even look at Rebecca, SeanR, You are not worthy.
Tokyo Rose 12th Dec 2016, 3:16 PM edit delete reply

She stole them from one of the palace armories a while ago and cached them in a place where she could get to them quickly; she's not attached to them enough to have given them names or anything. :D
Gilrandir 11th Dec 2016, 10:47 PM edit delete reply
Just a weird detail question, because I have nothing better to do with myself than pick silly nits. My apologies if I inadvertently offend the excellent creative team. If Septimus is Church property, why does he appear to be wearing a military patch ("SPQR", with an eagle), rather than a caduceus like the paladins and Setorius? Is that actually second-hand armor they've dressed him in because it's so hard to find clothes in his size? ^_^
Centcomm 12th Dec 2016, 8:39 AM edit delete reply

THe jump suit is a spare. And Septmus is being trained for military use as well.
HiFranc 12th Dec 2016, 12:43 AM edit delete reply

I'm hoping that they come to an agreement to leave the one they rescued there (sorry, don't know how to spell his name) and both parties part.

I do like the page title though, it taught me something new. I find it amusing that the page title is in Greek, whilst they are in New Rome, and none of the people present are from New Troy.
Centcomm 12th Dec 2016, 8:13 AM edit delete reply

Julia is actually :D

Stormwind13 13th Dec 2016, 11:41 AM edit delete reply

Actually DLK, Julia trained as a GP in New Sparta; however, she was from New Troy. If you will remember on page House of Cards (22 October 2014) Julia had a meltdown about New Troy not coming to HER rescue.
Morituri 12th Dec 2016, 12:08 PM edit delete reply
What the hell are they still arguing about? What the hell did they even START arguing about? Setorius is a medic, even if a weird and creepy one. They were carrying a soldier in need of medical attention to an emergency station for care.

Instead of putting him down, the correct move was just to say, "Thank goodness you're here, this man needs help." and continue to the emergency station.

I sort of doubt that Setorius will give two figs if they're heading out of Nova Roma to pursue solo careers. The situation has deteriorated way too far to care about such trifles.
Morituri 12th Dec 2016, 12:22 PM edit delete reply
In fact I'd figure he's probably expecting them to make a break for it. He knows already that Julia and Miraiko are more than fond of one another, and the thought that both would prefer that Miraiko find some other niche in the world than being a slave shouldn't surprise him. That's something they can't do in Nova Roma, so there's a perfectly reasonable premise for them getting the hell out.
Gilrandir 12th Dec 2016, 1:04 PM edit delete reply
To be fair, we don't know a lot about what motivates Setorius, and we don't know the Church's policies regarding laying down one's vocation. Julia may be privy to a lot of bio-technical 'trade secrets' about which the Church feels very possessive, for all we know. We don't know if New Rome has Cuban-style laws in place preventing valuable citizens from emigrating. I agree that Setorius seems unlikely to be overly concerned with civil laws, but he does have his reputation in front of the paladins to think of. It's possible a gesture of some kind will be required.

Miraiko seems like her situation is easy ... Assuming she was the personal slave of Julia, all Julia had to do was say "Miraiko, I free you. You may now have the name Miraiko Juliana, if you like. Want to leave the city with me?" (This, of course, is based on the assumption that Miraiko is an augmented human, not a disguised android.)

Now if Miraiko was actually Church property, merely assigned to Julia's service, that would be different. That's theft, and Setorius may be expected to hold opinions about that. It also suggests that the stacks of the Church's 'lending library' of personal resources would make an excellent voting incentive. ^_^
Tokyo Rose 12th Dec 2016, 3:23 PM edit delete reply

Miraiko is collarless, armed, and carrying a guy twice her size on her back in an area of the palace where she and Julia have no real business being. They don't know where Setorius's real loyalties lie, but they do know he's one of the most politically powerful individuals in New Rome, and he's benefited from the Prince's reign. Miraiko is DONE playing the cute, harmless, ditzy slave girl, and if she has to kill every single motherfucker between here and her exit point to get herself and Julia out of the city safely, she's quite willing to do so.
Gilrandir 12th Dec 2016, 5:06 PM edit delete reply
But, what it appears we are about to discover is whether or not she is willing to kill everyone between her and her exit point if she doesn't have to. ^_^
Morituri 12th Dec 2016, 7:48 PM edit delete reply
Julia says "she's a free citizen now", as Gilrandir pointed out, and at least a couple of those objections go away; citizens can go armed if I understand it correctly, and if she belongs to Julia then Julia's the ultimate authority about whether and when she becomes a free citizen.

About that "carrying a guy twice her size" thing though, it does become obvious that she's not quite built according to the averages for Nova Roma's slaves, and Setorius isn't likely to miss the significance of that.
Haegan2005 12th Dec 2016, 12:49 PM edit delete reply

You mean that there is NOT going to be a serious discussion about the merits of axes vs lasor rifles here? Hmmm, obviously these guys area not true philosophers. ;)
Morituri 12th Dec 2016, 2:00 PM edit delete reply
We are not sufficiently versed in the weaponry of the storyverse's era to have valid opinions, aside from noting that at the current distance between the disputants a ranged weapon seems to be a decisive advantage over a meelee weapon.

It is quite surprising to me that meelee as opposed to ranged fighting is sufficiently important in the Nova Roma military that the weight allowance for such a large meelee weapon as a sword is considered reasonable.

In the current era, even the close in foot soldiers don't carry more than knives for close-quarters combat; Carrying capacity that could be devoted to having more ammo for ranged weapons just isn't worth it.
Tokyo Rose 12th Dec 2016, 3:30 PM edit delete reply

DC melee weapons have the benefit of high-tech materials and crafting methods to reduce weight without sacrificing strength. One could also point out that the soldiers and guards who've been shown are assigned to specific posts; it's not as if they're out in the field, carrying everything they need on their own backs.
Centcomm 12th Dec 2016, 4:13 PM edit delete reply

those axes barely weigh anything but are strong enough to withstand being slammed into concrete and metal repeatably. and with the power field enmgaged the axe becomes nearly unbreakable and burns away material like wax.
Morituri 12th Dec 2016, 7:57 PM edit delete reply
Even if feather-light, something large and rigid bites into carrying capacity by making the loadout unwieldy or imposing limitations on flexibility and movement. Committing to carry anything bigger than the axes, that's not a ranged weapon, means there's a good reason why people believe the fight isn't going to be settled at range.
Dragonrider 12th Dec 2016, 8:29 PM edit delete reply

Wonder what would happen if she went all Tomahawk with them on the Tangos with the rifles, powered up grabbed the hooker, slammed her into the back of He-Man put her dainty size 4 into Doc Evils head while Julia took potshots at anything else standing.
Deoxy 13th Dec 2016, 9:00 AM edit delete reply
"Carrying capacity that could be devoted to having more ammo for ranged weapons just isn't worth it."

Or more ammo for a pistol, which makes a dang fine melee weapon as well, as long as it has ammo.

The only advantage a knife has over a loaded pistol is noise level, which only matters upon occasion.

(Well, the only COMBAT advantage, of course - knives have lots of useful properties that pistols don't.)
Timotheus 13th Dec 2016, 10:37 AM edit delete reply

True, it's hard to clean and cook game with a pistol. I have started a number of cook fires with my flintlock however.

I know that Setorius is used to being in charge, but he REALLY needs to understand a bodyguard's job. Of course Septimus is blocking his line of sight. Comes with interposing one's body between your principal and any threats!

Ha ha, yeah, Septimus is only doing his job.

That said, old man Setorius has been modifying himself for decades - There's no telling just how hardcore he is.
