Ahhhh... Scene switch! :-)

Guess we don't need (or at least get to) observe Miraiko and Julia escaping from Nova Roma. Though I would have been interested in seeing how Miraiko dealt with more Blueboys she ran into. :-)
Dragonrider 18th Dec 2016, 9:19 PM edit delete reply

Exactly what are we seeing here? Who is Sofie? That is NOT a Dart Flyer with missiles under the wings There is no way that craft will hold 4 people, possible two, Miraiko and Julia
Stormwind13 18th Dec 2016, 9:25 PM edit delete reply

According to the sub-text, Sofie is Marcus' combat computer. For where Marcus got the flyer, I'm not sure we know. :-D

My question is where did the name Sofie come from? Past lover, mother's name or is it something that was assigned to the computer? :-)
Marcus Ramesy 18th Dec 2016, 9:35 PM edit delete reply

it was built with with with the same parts that were used for making Dr Silvers Drones...
Marcus Ramesy 18th Dec 2016, 9:36 PM edit delete reply

a LOT of materials were transported on the Hercules transport, the parts neeed to build the filter were also part of the raw materials
Dragonrider 18th Dec 2016, 11:31 PM edit delete reply

"Why does HE get the best toys? I want one of those." Think the joker said that when he first saw the Batplane.
Gilrandir 18th Dec 2016, 11:20 PM edit delete reply
I'm guessing that "Sophie" is short for "Sophia" (meaning "Wisdom") -- which is a very good thing to have in a combat companion. ^_^
Marcus Ramesy 19th Dec 2016, 12:21 PM edit delete reply

you are correct... and very amused that some one caught that.
Dragonrider 19th Dec 2016, 5:03 PM edit delete reply

Granted Sophia is Goddess of Wisdom, another possibility would have been Thena, short for Athena. Goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill.
Marcus Ramesy 19th Dec 2016, 9:00 PM edit delete reply

there is a story behind sophia..
jamie59 18th Dec 2016, 9:35 PM edit delete reply

Really agitated!?!
How about carve her up with a butter knife & laugh agitated. Even if she's an AI.
Sheela 19th Dec 2016, 7:39 AM edit delete reply

There goes another doll.
And then one more when TeeDee finds her.
And possibly another one when Dolly finds her.
Stormwind13 19th Dec 2016, 8:08 AM edit delete reply

If CentComm is wise, she'll make up a bunch of decoys and scatter them in front of the returning party. That way they can burn off some aggression without inconveniencing CentComm in the slightest.

Mark_L_A 18th Dec 2016, 10:13 PM edit delete reply

Agitated is putting it mildly.
cattservant 18th Dec 2016, 10:14 PM edit delete reply

Lots of diplomacy, much of it domestic...
Timotheus 18th Dec 2016, 10:23 PM edit delete reply

"Three sides to it now."? The rebels/rioters, the army/Arcantha supporters, and the Decimus die hards?
Marcus Ramesy 18th Dec 2016, 10:28 PM edit delete reply

Rebles, Maxis and his army, and Pretorians all fighting amongst each other.
highly irregular 19th Dec 2016, 6:11 AM edit delete reply
I thought it was the hangar that had only 3 sides. Revising the DC universe's "small arms" back down to things that don't blow walls off hangars.
Sheela 19th Dec 2016, 7:40 AM edit delete reply

You all forgot the 4th side .. Tokyo Rose and Aeneas.
Stormwind13 19th Dec 2016, 9:24 AM edit delete reply

Rose isn't really interested in a ground war, Sheela. She has a very narrow, specific agenda.
Sheela 19th Dec 2016, 4:38 PM edit delete reply

Yes, well, she enjoys breaking the 4th wall, so that may have something to do with it. :)
plymayer 19th Dec 2016, 12:32 AM edit delete reply

It's been a while but that sounded a lot like QPSK in panel three.
Just_IDD 19th Dec 2016, 7:14 AM edit delete reply
QPSK is nice, and is used for amateur transmission because its easy to implement over an analog carrier. This is a digital lunacom connection however with military datacomm traffic riding on it. I would liken it to over a vpn link. what I wonder though is if the call was scheduled or if Major Ramsey initiated the communication some how. If the call was CENTCOMM initiated that shoots all sorts of holes in her Alpha Black operation status. But the discussion doesn't flow like it was Ramsey initiated.
Marcus Ramesy 19th Dec 2016, 12:24 PM edit delete reply

The call was initiated by my self.. had to wait for a satellite toe be in the area I needed it. the com system basically says we will contact you when we can put your call through.
HiFranc 19th Dec 2016, 1:08 AM edit delete reply

Took me a while to work out who's talking in the first panel. Am I right in thinking that's TeeDee and Marcus for most of it and Ada chimes in at the end?
Stormwind13 19th Dec 2016, 3:39 AM edit delete reply

That is Ada's colors on the word balloon, HiFrac, so I think you are right.
mjkj 19th Dec 2016, 4:13 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, that is how I read it, too.

...after recognizing Marcus reading the alt text...

mjkj 19th Dec 2016, 4:11 AM edit delete reply

Ohhh, I only understood what is what after reading the alt text...

So, that is Marcus' personal craft...

...and agitated is putting it a bit ... diplomatically...

Marcus Ramesy 19th Dec 2016, 12:28 PM edit delete reply

Dr Silver makes some of the best toys does she not... The Fliter was all her idea...
Sheela 19th Dec 2016, 4:40 PM edit delete reply

Betcha it's drive-brain is a custom job too. :)
Marcus Ramesy 19th Dec 2016, 5:01 PM edit delete reply

velvetsanity 19th Dec 2016, 5:08 AM edit delete reply

Just because alt-text.

I demand a cast page for Sophie. Or else I'll steal your sweetroll.
Tokyo Rose 19th Dec 2016, 6:08 AM edit delete reply

No lollygaggin'.
Just_IDD 19th Dec 2016, 7:16 AM edit delete reply
Damnation, can't read the alt text on my Android. I thought I had disabled the inhibitor device.
Stormwind13 19th Dec 2016, 8:15 AM edit delete reply

It is a fairly long one, Just. I'll try to get it right on my phone.

"Sofie is Marcus's combat computer. AND NO THERE WILL NEVER BE AN ENTRY ON THE CAST PAGE FOR IT"

Are you sworn to carry my burdens?
chk 19th Dec 2016, 8:41 AM edit delete reply

So, it's been less than two hours since the first boom?
Stormwind13 19th Dec 2016, 9:03 AM edit delete reply

Sure looks that way, chk. Boom was at 0400 (local) and 221 pages ago {Safe Room page 1215, 8 July 2015}.

Lots happened since then. =D
sigpig 19th Dec 2016, 9:14 AM edit delete reply

I was just thinking of something. I wonder if Mr. Black has an in-universe sister named "Mercy"...

(I have been thinking that since Tona was introduced...)
DLKmusic 19th Dec 2016, 6:32 PM edit delete reply

Rofl, Sigpig... She would make a great cameo!

of course, Mercy IS just a name!
Morituri 19th Dec 2016, 7:36 PM edit delete reply
Hay Rose?

I have a question which you can, of course, choose not to answer. I've been looking through the archive and noticing little things that might not indicate anything significant....

Was there a version of this story where Decimus actually kept his act together long enough to be a credible, calculating adversary of the sort who actually has some smart plans that aren't immediately apparent, instead of just a loathesome fuckbrained crazy dangerous asshat with one outrageous whim after another to feed his stupid ego?

The story works as is - loathesome fuckbrained crazy dangerous asshat is very well done, and works beautifully in story as the kind of "force of nature" that every sane person regardless of faction must try to overcome, evade, clean up after, or just survive.

But there are bits and pieces here and there that make me think maybe there was an original version of the story where he had schemes and plans that "I am a crazy asshole holding Lynn for ransom" might have just been to misdirect people from or just to set things in motion by provoking a reaction he had realistically anticipated and really prepared for.
Tokyo Rose 20th Dec 2016, 5:49 AM edit delete reply

Decimus was a lot more savvy and intelligent than we showed him to be. He did have ambitious and far-reaching plans that we only hinted at, and could be very charming and personable when he felt it was to his advantage. (The call where he spoke to Calliope shows a bit of that.) Thing is, the story we wanted to tell wasn't "Decimus Gives Machiavelli A Gigantic Posthumous Political-Intrigue-Boner"; we instead are telling the story of how his schemes collapsed around his ears because there were things he either didn't or couldn't have planned for.
highly irregular 20th Dec 2016, 7:33 AM edit delete reply
ooh, do we get prequels? (goes off to resurrect the Kill Douchimus Already We Hate The Sight Of Him club)
Morituri 20th Dec 2016, 12:19 PM edit delete reply
In other news, I have always wondered whether 'asshat' ought to be pronounced with an aspirated 'h', or an 'sh' sound in the middle.

As someone who has clearly spent time and effort building some weapons-grade vocabulary, if you were hyphenating it at the end of the line would you put the hyphen before, or after, the second 's'?
Gilrandir 20th Dec 2016, 12:32 PM edit delete reply
Really?!? This is blatantly good-natured trolling, @Morituri. Surely someone as generally insightful and perceptive as yourself cannot have missed the fact that 'asshat' is a word compounded from 'ass' and 'hat', referring to someone whose personality center has been crowned by their posterior? And therefore, as a compound word, the hyphen separates the two components ('ass-hat').

Could this possibly be a solution in real life to certain persons in life that occasionally afflict us? Is what we really need to have available to us just more hyphens? ^_^
Morituri 20th Dec 2016, 3:16 PM edit delete reply

I don't know. There are certain people whom I consider to be exactly as shat.

Has everyone forgotten that 'shit' is a transitive verb and has a past tense?
Morituri 20th Dec 2016, 3:21 PM edit delete reply
Erf. I realize my wording was still unclear. I should probably have said 'exactly as they were when they were first shat out.'

So the construction seems to work either way. Certainly when I've heard it in conversation it's had the aspirated 'h', but I think it may be a better construction as read using 'shat' as a verb.

This is an example of what linguists call a 'mondegreen.'
Gilrandir 20th Dec 2016, 3:40 PM edit delete reply
I agree it can be construed that way ... but it seems tortured and ... inelegant to me. Just my opinion, of course, and you are free to disagree.
Haegan2005 19th Dec 2016, 8:06 PM edit delete reply

I like Sophie.

I think she should be an ongoing character!
Centcomm 19th Dec 2016, 11:34 PM edit delete reply

She IS is combat computer so so "she" will be around :D
Gilrandir 20th Dec 2016, 12:16 AM edit delete reply
Unless you kill off Marcus, you heartless witch! ^_^

("Hey, Marcus! You hear that, you're safe." ... "Of course I'm safe. They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist-" ^_^)
Stormwind13 20th Dec 2016, 6:14 AM edit delete reply

Surely not, CentComm! Sofie is a combat computer, and the story is all DONE with combat, right? :-D
Marcus Ramesy 20th Dec 2016, 11:50 AM edit delete reply

I am never safe... but there are times I am safer..
Rashala 20th Dec 2016, 12:25 AM edit delete reply

Agitated......., you're happy with that level of modifier here?
Marcus Ramesy 20th Dec 2016, 12:55 PM edit delete reply

I think its a perfect descriptor for my assessment of the annoyance level.
velvetsanity 21st Dec 2016, 2:57 AM edit delete reply

Clearly you have a gift for massive understatement, then :P
