So the path to their escape craft goes through some less than... prestigious locations.

And it sounds like Julia has some bad memories (screaming nightmares) from this place. I get the feeling she would have preferred to AVOID it altogether.
Centcomm 1st Jan 2017, 9:19 PM edit delete reply

just a little bit!
Dragonrider 1st Jan 2017, 9:11 PM edit delete reply

And now Miraiko makes a mission deviation, this chapter should be titled, Who can kill the most bad guys and still keep within Mission Time Parameters.
Centcomm 1st Jan 2017, 9:19 PM edit delete reply

Hmm he knows too much! :D
Chippewa Ghost 1st Jan 2017, 9:36 PM edit delete reply

Outstanding, Dragonrider, outstanding.

My money is on the Major.
Dragonrider 2nd Jan 2017, 12:02 AM edit delete reply

We don't know, and probably never will, how many Tangos Miraiko and Julia left KIA in their ExFil. Also don't count TeeDee and Noctis out yet when they head for the hanger they're going to want to take few more out, Noctis to establish her Bona Fides as a qualified Bodyguard for Acantha, TeeDee to show who the Alpha Bitch is.
megados 2nd Jan 2017, 6:59 AM edit delete reply
I think Tee Dee and Noctis will be giving each other glances of "Good one" before that's over.
rob 2nd Jan 2017, 8:47 AM edit delete reply
Centcomm,,, im going with Centcomm cuz she set this up.!! just because some one else is pulling the trigger...
but if u want actual ,, Tee's partner ( gonna look up name )

Ada.. in kill mode..
Mark_L_A 2nd Jan 2017, 3:00 AM edit delete reply

With Julia's bad associations, it might not BE Miraiko that decides on a side mission. It might be Julia.

It would have been Malati, if she hadn't had to end her own existence earlier...

Malati: *super speed burst* *stab* *super speed burst* *stab* *super speed burst* *stab stab stabbity* *super speed burst* *fondle fondle butt-slap* *super speed burst*-

Gladiator: *!* I... think the arena is gonna be free from hostiles now, comrades... Malati just left her usual greeting, so she would have quartered and secured the place first...

Other gladiator: You sure?! Then where's-

Gladiator: *points to pair of Malati's knickers (marked "AREA SECURE ♥" in lipstick) that have appeared on the floor*

Ha ha ha ... the butt fondle was great.

I thought that was her "callsign". :)

Missions changed Lynn's already been secured by the S&R, with the Lord General. Now it's kill all the douchebags, so Acantha can start over with a clean city-state.

Looks like we're back to rescuing kittens again.
Centcomm 1st Jan 2017, 9:19 PM edit delete reply

little kittens even!
Stormwind13 1st Jan 2017, 9:20 PM edit delete reply

That guy doesn't sound like a kitten, jamie. Sounds more like an a$$hole to me! Where is his Blueboy suit? :-p
Ryu Santos 1st Jan 2017, 9:44 PM edit delete reply

The blue bodysuit is just an optional extra. This guy/gal sounds like a lower level jerk looking to make it big as a pimp. I'm sure Maraiko will make it him/her regret that bit of stupidity.
HiFranc 2nd Jan 2017, 12:44 AM edit delete reply

Even if the timing was different, I don't think that he would have joined their ranks. Decimus's special people were those who had been sent to prison for their crimes.

I doubt that he would have gone to prison for his crimes. Under New Roman law, what he's doing is theft and property damage.

Also, his first comment, in his mind, is probably meant to sound caring. Those in blue probably would see that as weak.

This shows you why the institution of slavery is so insidious - once you treat one person as not deserving of rights, it eventually leads to nobody having rights.
Sheela 2nd Jan 2017, 4:59 PM edit delete reply

What do you mean HiFranc ? You don't need your rights, I have access to all of them ?!

All you have to do is do what I say ... such an easy task!
And I say : *bark* *bark* *woof* *woof* *bark* *woof* *pant* *pant* *pant* ... now hop to it!

I think this story segment is going to represent a significant challenge ...

The challenge is going to be "Why are we being shown this story segment?" ^_^

On the face of it, we are confronted with a single abusive male victimizing more helpless females. And confronting him we have a heavily cybered warrior who dislikes the institution of slavery and can effortlessly blow through whole squads of armored Praetorians. Knowing @Tokyo Rose's storytelling art as we do, it is unlikely she would take our time up with a sequence in which nothing new of interest unfolds and which would be better summed up as a single expository caption "... After liberating a few more slaves along the way, Miraiko and Julia ended up at the hangar. ..." So, the odds are there's some kind of wrinkle here, somewhere. It just isn't yet clear to me what it will be. However, I await its unfolding with confident patience. ^_^
Ryu Santos 1st Jan 2017, 10:15 PM edit delete reply

Julia takes him out with two shots to the kneecaps, castrates him with with another, frees the girls, and locks him in the cage to bleed out.
Gilrandir 1st Jan 2017, 10:23 PM edit delete reply
That would, at least, show us a side of Julia's personality we have not yet seen ... But it would seem unlikely to me. ^_^
Visvires 1st Jan 2017, 10:36 PM edit delete reply
Yeah, we just had this trope. There will be a twist.
Dragonrider 2nd Jan 2017, 12:11 AM edit delete reply

No, think Miraiko would be more likely to use that scenario, Julia would just blow him into the new level of existence. This SFB would be lucky to be resurrected as a dung beetle.

I think that they are just going to find another way round.

*whew* .. I wonder how that happened?!

Ryu Santos 2nd Jan 2017, 11:00 PM edit delete reply

I expect to see alligators, rats, roaches, and C.H.U.D. in sewers.
mjkj 2nd Jan 2017, 1:47 AM edit delete reply

Uh-oh... more people to rescue...

I wonder if this time Julia gets to relieve some built up stress and frustration - or if she freezes up instead...

Oh, I think I did not know (or at least can not remember) Miraiko having a tattoo...?

Haegan2005 2nd Jan 2017, 8:46 AM edit delete reply

At the very least we get to see these two interact and some character building. I think Julia will not have time to freeze up. M will take this guy down too fast.
Stormwind13 2nd Jan 2017, 10:27 AM edit delete reply

I think we've seen that before, mjkj. If I'm remembering right it is the slave marker. Think it shows she is owned by Julia.

Edit: Found it now that I'm not on my little phone... Bearer of good news (5 March 2014) you can see the mark on her arm. And CentComm indicated it was an Owner's Mark - Julia was the owner (in the comments).

[The standard warnings apply. Inspiration happens, I can't stop it. This is for the creative team. Flee before reading it! It's the only way to save yourself. If you are still reading this, it should be read to the tune of Cheap Trick's 'Surrender'.]

They all told me, they all warned me
"Don't embrace the new."
Make your comics just one way,
The same way others do.
Every big name started out
With nothing but a pen.
It's all they ever had to use
When drawing way back when.

CHORUS:
Photoshop's right
Daz is all right
They just seem a little weird
So render
So render
Just don't let it take all day
Day, Daaaaaay

Anyone can place a light
Or add a texture map.
Get some store-bought figurines
And make a load of crap.
To make a comic that's regarded
As a work of art,
Cheap tricks aren't important, make each
Page with all your heart!

<CHORUS>

Other comics come and go
We make ours to last.
We take time, make it just-so.
Some crank theirs out too fast.
When each element is just right,
And we build the scene,
There isn't any doubt our readers
Know just what we mean.

<CHORUS>

All Day
All Day

So render
So render
Just don't let it take all day
So render
So render
Just don't let it take all day
[repeat to fade]

Boom, headshot. Cut the locks. Move on.

No point wasting time or breath on this guy. They're leaving Nova Roma anyway. The "Rule of law" is suspended, by the fighting, to the extent that it was ever really a thing in Nova Roma. And the witnesses left behind will happily exonerate them because they themselves were victims of a crime who got liberated by the act.

And when Maxus takes the regency or Acantha ascends the throne, I think they'll have more pressing concerns than attempting to track down and prosecute.

Hence the recommendation. Boom, headshot. Cut the locks. Move on.
Gilrandir 2nd Jan 2017, 11:59 PM edit delete reply
You're not thinking 'Lost In Translation', @Morituri. Maybe the blonde waif we can see turns out to be Julia's clone sister, generated by a renegade priest of the Church of Genetic Purity with whom Miraiko once had an illicit fling while attempting to elicit the access code to the Church's reserved store of kiwis to sate Julia's cake habit. Or the freed slaves can't be left to their own devices without continuing to receive special food supplements stored in a special locker currently being looted by an opportunistic biker gang. Or Miraiko suffers a sudden stroke and, after dispatching the would-be whorelord one-handed, the slaves have to be put to work fashioning and carrying a litter as Julia tries to take over and complete their escape from Nova Roma. Or, if we're really lucky, the creatrices spin the Big Wheel of Plot Complications and get 'Everyone's Clothes Fall Off'. ^_^ (Just hope we don't get "Major Character Stabbed In Chest By Family Member" again. That could be awkward. ^_^)
Tokyo Rose 3rd Jan 2017, 6:03 PM edit delete reply

I laughed so goddamn hard at this. Writing dialogue for the "Lost In Translation" bits is some of the most unapologetic fun in the world.

For those folks who care strongly about Datachaser's Top Web Comic rating, be advised they have rolled out a new scheme that allows members to vote up to 10 times each day. Although I have voted daily for DataChasers, to date I have not become a member of Top Web.

I expect that the new system will definitely change the dynamics of how voting works, with consequent shakeups in the ranking until people decide how they want to respond and a new equilibrium emerges. However, since I know some people here feel strongly about such things, I wanted to call attention to it, since it did not seem necessarily obvious to the casual voter who just wants to give DataChasers credit for their daily vote and move on to the serious business of web surfing. If you are so inclined, then learn more, decide what you are willing and unwilling to do, and then give DataChasers the fullest support with which you feel comfortable.

That is all.
Dragonrider 3rd Jan 2017, 1:25 PM edit delete reply

Thanx, however as I read the rules:
1. Teri has to upload 10 incentive images each month, the images will rotate for members and you can vote like or hate. like adds a vote and hate does not, you can do this 10 times a day. Wonder what dimwitted numbskull came up with this fuck up, has to be a government employee working part time.
Gilrandir 3rd Jan 2017, 2:29 PM edit delete reply
As I read it, she may upload up to ten incentive pieces of art. And that, of course, is only if she wants her voters to be able to take advantage of the new feature. I assume she could, if she wanted, re-use prior vote incentive pictures, so it isn't as if she has to do all new art for it. And, presumably, good incentives get 'likes', which generate votes, while poor incentives do not.

I'm not particularly in favor of the scheme myself, but it does seem admirably designed to encourage (force?) people who want to stuff the ballot box to sign up for Top Web memberships. And I wanted to make sure that, if the creative team decides not to opt in, that they don't get disheartened if their ratings fall for 'no discernible reason'.
Morituri 3rd Jan 2017, 2:58 PM edit delete reply
Sounds to me like a barefaced ploy to force comic creators to give them more promotion and content.

TWC is a useful resource for promoting comics, but this is egregious; they're being arrogant and kind of sleazy.
Gilrandir 3rd Jan 2017, 3:37 PM edit delete reply
I don't know about "... force comic creators ..." (Disclaimer: I know nothing about any and all arrangements Top Web Comics has with ... anyone.) On the surface, it appears that TWC provides a free listing service, gratis, to comics providers, and then supports themselves by selling advertising. Since the creators aren't paying TWC anything to be listed, they would not seem entitled to receive any consideration from TWC and are free to 'vote with their feet' at any time by removing the widget from their page. This seems (to me) completely analogous to the situation where someone who enjoys a webcomic provided free of charge by the creative team is not entitled to make any demands or levy expectations on that team. You're getting what you get for free. Enjoy and be grateful, or don't. The door is that way.

Of course, the advertisers on TWC, and the Patreon patrons of DataChasers, enjoy a different situation entirely. If an advertiser also happens to be a creator and they don't like the effect the new changes will have, I expect they may want to say something. But I don't know what effects those will end up being. I expect some comics will benefit and others will not -- but I can't really say which will be which because I'm just too ignorant of the relevant facts.
Morituri 3rd Jan 2017, 6:22 PM edit delete reply
The issue IMO is that this means anybody who doesn't pony up ten pieces of "vote incentive" per week is going to fall behind because other people's comix, regardless of quality, will be eligible for ten times as many votes.

TWC is essentially saying Fuck Off to anybody whose art takes more than a couple of hours a page. They don't give a crap that the comics they're pushing away are better quality; they only care that if they can get enough of the ones they don't push away to provide ten times as much content they can sell more advertising.

That means either finding a different way to do promotion and letting TWC suck air, or taking time away from actually producing the comics we'd want to vote for.

I don't hope for creators to take time out of their comic creation to satisfy this demand.

People who will find it easy to fill are the ones who spend nearly no time on their art.
Gilrandir 3rd Jan 2017, 6:44 PM edit delete reply
Well, I agree that this method is likely to skew the results of the poll (further) away from 'pure' popularity, making it less useful to me as a tool for finding other webcomics in which I am likely to be interested.

But for communities with strong support for a site, independent of the incentives, I see no reason the creator(s) could not just submit the same ten pieces of art over and over again, relying on the readers to give them the likes that will turn into votes anyway. Not optimal, certainly. I suppose we'll see how it unfolds.
rob 3rd Jan 2017, 7:53 PM edit delete reply
i wondered about this new system.. but already 4 comics in the top 100 have gone bye bye... and pushed some comics not in top standing way back ( staff and sword, went from 46 to 99...)(( as i voted )),, an still moving day to day...
