Even the finest comment is useless in the hands of a mute.

I feel this page is part of a pause before the full implications of Deck's death agitate this world.

TeeDee finds a way to needle everybody. It's her Super Power.

Unless the common tool these days is an jet injector, isn't it Ada who needles everyone while TeeDee keeps watch? ^_^

Yep it truly is. :D

Noctis seems to have pretty well figured out what happened to Dolly and Kali, Maxus and Marcus are congratulating each other and getting ready for after action beers, Noctis is showing uncharacteristic concern about Dolly, When is the other shoe gonna drop? Things are moving too easily for a Friday segment.
Stormwind13 2nd Feb 2017, 9:24 PM edit delete reply

I think this should be winding down. I mean, they should just get on-board and get Acantha to New Troy. Shouldn't be a whole lot more excitement, should there? Montage pages, maybe.
megados 2nd Feb 2017, 9:34 PM edit delete reply

You are right. Acantha needs to be on her way.

The story has to end eventually anyways. Why not end it on a good note free of annoying twists?
HiFranc 2nd Feb 2017, 11:54 PM edit delete reply

You don't need a cliffhanger to generate interest.

She's with Ranger Logrin ?

And then, all of a sudden, Luna and the Urinaliens appear.
Timotheus 3rd Feb 2017, 9:01 PM edit delete reply

I can think of at least three plot complications the authors have pre-established that can be unleashed to cause further chaos in the story before we even begin to approach the final conclusion. To begin with; was a certain captive sprung from her cell during the recent uprising by well meaning "rescuers"?
Sheela 4th Feb 2017, 3:13 AM edit delete reply

Did Mira find *all* the bugs that Centcomm planted in the Navarro ?
megados 2nd Feb 2017, 9:18 PM edit delete reply

Some good perspectives on this page, both visually and interpersonally. I get a good sense of scale within the area as I see the different views.

I can tell Noctis respects Dolly, and would like to help her. She doesn't know exactly how it would be received. She also seems to have gained some insight into how Kali must have felt. I can only guess, but Kali and Dolly's battle seemed to be fair and honorable, until Kali flipped the board.

I think, all needling aside, Noctis and TeeDee would get along.

Maxus and Marcus are assessing the situation, and each other.

Gilrandir 2nd Feb 2017, 9:22 PM edit delete reply
What is the thing in the foreground of panel 4 that appears to be obscuring Marcus' right shoulder? I am not recognizing it.

EDIT: Nevermind. It appears to be the top handgrip for Maxus' Squad Assault Weapon. Which leads to the question of how he's carrying it, since it appeared to have only the single grip.
Dragonrider 2nd Feb 2017, 9:25 PM edit delete reply

Looks like the handle of Maxus long gun or an upper magazine.
Centcomm 2nd Feb 2017, 11:32 PM edit delete reply

He set it aside the gun is a undrslung affair. it can also be used as a Melee weapon.
Gilrandir 3rd Feb 2017, 12:13 AM edit delete reply
Ah, so it's resting on a crate or something and just happens to have crept into the foreground? Ok, thanks.

(Alternatively, what is Maxus doing, carrying around Chekov's gun? ^_^)
Sheela 3rd Feb 2017, 8:11 PM edit delete reply

No, no, Lynn is carrying Chekov's gun.
Gilrandir 3rd Feb 2017, 8:54 PM edit delete reply
Chekov's gun is any gun that is seen, but not used. Hmmmm.....

Chekov's a conscientious objector ... who knew? ^_^
Sheela 4th Feb 2017, 3:14 AM edit delete reply

No no, it is seen and made a big deal out of - forgotten for a while - and then used in a critical, plot-altering, moment.

Lynn is carrying the gun that Aeneas gave Acantha.
Stormwind13 4th Feb 2017, 10:48 AM edit delete reply

Actually, Acantha had that gun, she had reclaimed it on Acantha's Resolve, 27 April 2015 (currently page 1183). And then used it to shoot a guard, Setup/Knockdown from 21 August 2015 <currently page 1238> (armor absorbed it) and then Douchimus Ai Uchi from 23 May 2016 <currently page 1366> (wasn't INSTANTLY fatal, but Kali fixed that problem anyhow).

Last we saw it, Acantha had dropped it (while going into shock from a 'fatal' hit to the chest). Someone MAY have picked it up, but if so, it could be in any number of hands... And if it is locked to Acantha they couldn't use it. If not, then maybe they could.
Sheela 4th Feb 2017, 6:27 PM edit delete reply

I suspect that both Acantha and Lynn are ID-approved to that particular gun.
Dunno about everyone else.
megados 4th Feb 2017, 6:36 PM edit delete reply

Can it be set for multiple IDs?
Gilrandir 4th Feb 2017, 6:41 PM edit delete reply
Why do you suspect that, @Sheela?
Sheela 5th Feb 2017, 2:47 AM edit delete reply

They have both handled it without getting zapped by it ?
Also, remember what happened when Minx picked up Officer Ray's gun ?
It literally talked to her about what to do, and she wasn't even ID-approved for it.
Seems to me, that the future guns are a heck of a lot smarter than most of their users. :D
megados 5th Feb 2017, 5:44 AM edit delete reply

I guess that makes sense . . . thanks. I didn't know that it could handle multiple IDs. Or maybe not a locked weapon?
Gilrandir 5th Feb 2017, 7:49 AM edit delete reply
Ok, thank you. My impression was that the simple ID lock used in Nova Roma was a very different thing from a true smartgun equipped with positronic logic circuitry, like Officer Ray's weapon.
Timotheus 5th Feb 2017, 12:47 PM edit delete reply

Lynn could carry it but only Acantha could fire it. It was locked just to her.
Sheela 5th Feb 2017, 3:17 PM edit delete reply

Well, it's a gun made by Aeneas, it may be considerably smarter than the average praetorian !

... may also be smarter than their guns.
Guns made by Aeneas may not follow the traditional rules.
The Old Scribe 2nd Feb 2017, 10:31 PM edit delete reply

Noctis seems to have taken Artificial Sentience to a new level for Nova Roma tech. She's another fine sword that was in the hands of a fool. I wonder what she's going to think of New Troy where humans and artifolk mingle freely with mutual respect?
Centcomm 2nd Feb 2017, 11:31 PM edit delete reply

Aritifolk.. I LIKE that..
HiFranc 3rd Feb 2017, 12:05 AM edit delete reply

I've seen that term being used in a webcomic called Quantum Vibe (it's a solar system wide civilisation (at least at the start of the story)). The planet that treats artifolk as slaves is one based on Chinese civilisation.
HiFranc 2nd Feb 2017, 11:50 PM edit delete reply

I take it that you're another Quantum Vibe reader?
megados 3rd Feb 2017, 5:52 AM edit delete reply

@The Old Scribe yes I agree that there's more to Noctis than meets the eye. All of the Cassians could be thought of as fine swords which were in the hands of a fool.

Both her and Acantha are going to be seeing a whole new way of looking at things.
Stormwind13 3rd Feb 2017, 9:47 AM edit delete reply

I think you are right, megados. Arriving in New Troy will be as eye opening to Acantha and Noctis as Lynn's introduction to Nova Roma (if not as traumatic). I wonder how well Noctis will handle it. Acantha I forsee as being wide-eyed with wonder.
That one guy 3rd Feb 2017, 4:41 PM edit delete reply
Maybe, she may also have some degree of scorn and bafflement about some things. Remember how Lynn seemed to be a wimp for not being used to the cold, and the concept of dealing with a common cold was alien to her as well? Also I get the feeling everything's going to be a lot more sterile-feeling than she's used to (and that can feel kinda' uncomfortable/confining). Then there's also the whole birth rate thing that's likely deliberate human population control instituted in Helios' time but might also be Centcomm shenanigans.

I don't think Acantha will be rude about it or anything, but I suspect her to find places she thinks New Rome is better off along with places they're behind.
megados 3rd Feb 2017, 7:59 PM edit delete reply

Acantha has had a lot to deal with especially recently. She does not even know, for instance, that her brother is dead. She has a lot to absorb in the coming days, both in New Troy, as well as in Nova Roma. She has had to rise to a level of maturity in all of this, and it is my thought, that it will serve her in the immediate future, and hopefully well beyond.
Speedy Marsh 8th Apr 2017, 8:08 AM edit delete reply
Just imagine what Lynn's first meal at home will be like, when she realizes that she's doomed to a lifetime of eating Soylent Green. She'll start smuggling in Omaha Murderturd Steaks, and Harry & David's Bloody Oranges. Acantha will have to bring her Irene's cookies, in a steamer trunk sized diplomatic pouch.
SeanR 5th Feb 2017, 4:31 PM edit delete reply
Please remember how well the Waste Mechanic savant felt about New Troy. Both Noctis and Lynn may have similar reactions.
I mean, how ridiculous can you get than a city that taxes <s>soft drinks</s>salt?
megados 5th Feb 2017, 6:52 PM edit delete reply

Of course I can only speculate, but I don't see the bond between Dolly and Lynn being lost on Noctis. She's perceptive, and I think she at least notices the closeness there. One wonders if that can potentially affect Noctis' relationship with Acantha in a positive way. Like Dolly and Lynn, Noctis and Acantha might become closer. Speculation, of course . . .

It's hard to speculate about the impression they will have about New Troy. They will not have the same perspective as someone in another position. It also depends on just what kind of welcome they get. There's some chance of snags in the plan. It'll depend a lot on what the Trojans do when they find themselves with Nova Roma Royalty in their hands. Communication is going to be very important.

Of course, we have to get Acantha some help first . . . that part is not speculative.
HiFranc 2nd Feb 2017, 11:56 PM edit delete reply

Hopefully, Acantha will not only be competent, she will also be just as well.
megados 3rd Feb 2017, 7:25 AM edit delete reply

I very much think she will be.
HiFranc 2nd Feb 2017, 11:59 PM edit delete reply

Noctis, you sound as if you think your two theories are mutually exclusive. They can both be true.
Stormwind13 3rd Feb 2017, 8:21 AM edit delete reply

I get the feeling that Noctis is arriving at some of column A and some of column B, HiFranc. What she can't be sure of is just how hard Kali was going to accurately judge Dolly.

The fact Kali waited to cripple Dolly indicates (to Noctis) that it was a fight Kali didn't WANT to win. At least that is how I read it.
megados 3rd Feb 2017, 11:02 AM edit delete reply

I read it that way also, Stormwind13. She was giving Dolly a fair fight, but once Douchemess stabbed Acantha, she had to end it quickly. She seemed to regret having to do so. Only Kali, and the creatrixes know for sure, though.

You ARE right. I just realized that it was not only a fight she didn't won't to win, but a fight she didn't want to FIGHT! Kali hated Decimus, and was only fighting out of obligation, and because she didn't want her inhibitor to go off. She was coerced by programming to fight Dolly. I don't know why it took me so long to see it.

At least that's how it seems to me . . .and thanks for making me re-think it.
That one guy 4th Feb 2017, 8:57 PM edit delete reply
Kali fully recognized how foolish and insane kidnapping Lynn was. She may have even recognized how close it brought New Rome to annihilation.

Dolly was a potential way to clear that problem up. Kali wouldn't have wanted to throw away that potential solution unless she absolutely had to.

*lol* seems like Noctis almost emoted again...

Oh, when did Marcus join them?

*lol* Lucianus sure likes that pain killer... =P

HiFranc 3rd Feb 2017, 1:51 AM edit delete reply

Wasn't he en route to the hangers earlier? Who says that *he* joined them. He may have arrived earlier.

I was thinking that about our drugged up soldier. He reminds me of the opiate crisis in Canada and other countries.
Gilrandir 3rd Feb 2017, 11:15 AM edit delete reply
If he had arrived earlier, he'd probably still be conversing with the muzzle of the refueling slave's rifle when Lynn and Dolly arrived. Unless he stealthed past her -- which would be a cool scene ... Dolly and Lynn make nice and offer to trade medical supplies for access to their ship, then Marcus decloaks, giving everyone a bit of a jolt of adrenaline. ^_^
Centcomm 3rd Feb 2017, 11:11 AM edit delete reply

Yes Marcus was on the way.
Sheela 4th Feb 2017, 3:17 AM edit delete reply

Noctis: My name is Noctis.

Teedee: No, it's Pasty.

Noctis: ...Very well. Then your name must be "Sweary".

Tokyo Rose (via comms): No, if anyone's Sweary 'round here, it's me! You're Sturdy!

Teedee: Thanks! *flexes arms*

Tokyo Rose (via comms): The OLD meaning!

Teedee: ???

Yes, "sturdy" is one of those adjectives whose meaning has shifted markedly over the centuries. In the latter half of the 19th century, it was changing from a personal trait - "tough , capable of dishing out violence" - to a general trait - "strong, doesn't easily fall down". At the start of the 19th century and before, it meant "predisposed to violence" or at least "appearing to represent a physical threat in person". When the word first arrived in England, along with William of Normandy and his forces, it carried the meaning "berserk" or "violent in an over-the-top or disproportionate manner". When the word first appeared, back in old France, it was a noun, and referred to an ailment of sheep that caused them to lose their balance and appear uncoordinated and out-of-control. In turn, this was derived from an older Franco-Latin word: "estudio", meaning "giddy". This, unsurprisingly, derived from a loanword left by the Roman occupiers: "ex turdus", a euphemism for "drunk". And this is where the trail begins: "ex turdus" translates literally as "from the thrush", and derives from the Roman folklore that thrushes (Turdus sp.) were prone to eating from naturally-fermenting rotten fruit, and thus ending up drunk off their little feathered heads. And now you know.

Teedee: Who is this goat guy?! Is he one of yours, Rose?!!

Okay, I just can't help this...

You are pointing your goddamn weapon BETWEEN two officers! They are officers on different sides that are in what is, at best, a shaky alliance! Remember that thing about not pointing at anything you don't want to shoot? It goes double when shooting will cause a fucking diplomatic incident that jeopardizes both the mission and the alliance!

And at this point I'd go on by channelling my inner drill sergeant for about 20 minutes of rapid and richly varied profanity ending with assigning her to fucking desk duty until she learns to control her goddamn weapon.
Centcomm 3rd Feb 2017, 11:10 AM edit delete reply

actually shes in the process of pointing the weapon at the ground. I just hate the way the wrists and arms look broken in the standard " im pointing my weapon at the ground pose. " but feel free to yell at her shes S&R and not military. "D
Gilrandir 3rd Feb 2017, 11:12 AM edit delete reply
Well, she isn't pointing it directly at anyone, so shouldn't that be considered a positive? ^_^

Honestly, I was wondering why it wasn't slung at this point. I can only conclude that the awesomeness of Maxus is so intimidating to the tiny little droid that she feels the need for the reassurance of a ready weapon between herself and the ex-gladiator. ^_^. Or maybe she figures that, with muscles like his, the bullets would just bounce off anyway -- like for Clark Savage, Jr. -- so it doesn't really matter if she points her gun in his direction.

It is worth noting that Marcus has secured his weapons and Maxus has outright disarmed by laying his cannon aside -- but then again, they are officers. Maybe no one has gotten around to telling TeeDee she can go to 'DEFCON 4'. ^_^
sigpig 3rd Feb 2017, 1:09 PM edit delete reply

Maybe she doesn't know who to shoot yet?
Stormwind13 3rd Feb 2017, 8:29 PM edit delete reply

What she absolutely doesn't know is where all the Blueboys are. It could be bad for some of them to pop-up unexpectedly.

That one guy 3rd Feb 2017, 4:51 PM edit delete reply
So as per Comic 1450 - 0600 (post date 18th Jan 2017, 12:00 AM), the Nevarro (where Dolly was headed for the med-kit) was in bay Five-A and the Dart (where Ada, TeeDee, & Acantha headed) is in bay Five-B.

Why is Noctis in Five-A instead of Five-B? Shouldn't she be in Five-B to minimize any possible delay in Acantha's departure (and thus treatment)?
Tokyo Rose 3rd Feb 2017, 5:08 PM edit delete reply

Because like hell was Noctis going to leave Maxus by himself with Marcus AND Teedee AND Dolly around. Yes, he's probably a match for them all, jointly or separately, but Noctis didn't like the numerical advantage. Acantha's been settled in the Dart and Ada's with her, doing preflights.
Centcomm 3rd Feb 2017, 5:23 PM edit delete reply

pretty much what Rose said.
That one guy 4th Feb 2017, 10:35 AM edit delete reply
Fair enough, and I guess there could be plenty of pre-flight checks and coordination so she knows she's got plenty of time. I would've seen either having Tennyo stick with Maxus or summoning another Cassian (as Tennyo has been injured by a rebel EMP and her comms are offline), but if the pre-flight checks and everything are 20 minutes, then I suppose it wouldn't cause any delay to pop in this bay first (and since we're talking about a several hour flight in there, characters should be of the mindset that minutes potentially matter, though readers know that Acantha has plot armor/meds making sure that the minutes actually don't matter in this case and she'll have the same result either way).

However, since the plan was that the Dart leaves first, as I understood it, there'll need to be someone coming to relieve her if Noctis wants to avoid leaving Maxus with all the Trojans.
Tokyo Rose 4th Feb 2017, 5:14 PM edit delete reply

@That one guy

Tennyo's comms are back up again, actually. Which is fortunate, because that means the Cassians have solid comm capability again, not just the relatively short-range version.

Maxus is in 5A to meet Marcus face-to-face. Tennyo's in 5B, keeping an eye on Acantha and Ada.
Gilrandir 3rd Feb 2017, 8:50 PM edit delete reply
I'm still trying to figure out what Maxus is doing in 5A at all ... but if we get to discover that, I expect it will be revealed soon. Having decided that he was going to 5A, Noctis would have stayed in 5B if he'd ordered her to -- which (IMHO) he should have.

The person who should be in 5A with Maxus is Tennyo. (Again, IMHO.) If Noctis was able to do the Princeps-thing via remote while hanging around with Maxus, Tennyo should be just as capable of doing that, seeing as communication is her speciality. She's just as capable of providing him with immediate backup, and this way every Nova Roma VIP gets a Cassian watching over them while New Troy types of dubious character are still roaming around the city.
megados 3rd Feb 2017, 9:13 PM edit delete reply

I might guess that Noctis simply accompanied Maxus to 5A after meeting with Tennyo, and intends to continue to 5B once she's satisfied with the situation. Tennyo may have continued on to other duties. Maxus really has no reason to order Noctis to 5B that I can see, other than it might save a couple of minutes; I don't know. It seems like an eternity but I think it's only been, like, fifteen minutes since Ada with Acantha headed for the dart.

Or I might have it entirely wrong . . .
Gilrandir 3rd Feb 2017, 9:46 PM edit delete reply
The impression I got was that they (Maxus, Noctis, and Acantha) all went to 5B first, while Tennyo went ... somewhere. (Maybe Tennyo stayed with Acantha in 5B?) After seeing Acantha settled, Maxus and Noctis then went to 5A for ... reasons. Now Noctis will be going back to 5B, which will still be leaving Maxus alone with all the New Trojans, unless Maxus is also going back to 5B for ... reasons. ^_^

But I'm sure they are good reasons -- we just need to wait and see.
Sheela 4th Feb 2017, 3:20 AM edit delete reply

What I find interesting in all of this, is how absolutely implecit everyone trusts Ada.
Now is the perfect time for her to murder Acantha and get away with it.

Yes, I'm playing the devils advocate right now. :)
megados 4th Feb 2017, 4:52 AM edit delete reply

Well, Dolly and Lynn know who she is, and Noctis, and Maxus saw her in action trying to stabilize Acantha. If she'd wanted her dead they could have done it right there. It's also apparent to them that Ada cares about what she does. (that has been explained earlier) She's earned the trust that she's given.

That's the best answer I can give, @Sheela.
That one guy 4th Feb 2017, 10:41 AM edit delete reply
Sheela, Ada won't murder Acantha right now. That'd ruin her plot to replace Acantha's brain with a synthbrain with hidden commands to make her New Troy's complete and total slave. Murder isn't nearly enough of a sinister twist.

For a later twist it could be questionable if Ada actually did that or if Centcomm had coerced her (or overwritten part of her personality). I don't know if that's more or less of a twist, as it'd be in character for Centcomm to take that sort of "precaution" and if she plundered all of Calliope's data on Dolly's body she might have recently developed some new ideas as to how to make a synthbrain power a human body.

::Comes back with Ada plushie, brushing off the dirt. Sees the puppy and Ada points and says something to TeeDee::

::Cackling joyfully, TeeDee vaporizes the can full of tuna. Followed up by vaporizing the puppy's water bowl::

Ada asked me NOT to kill you... but I can shoot ALL the tuna you get near and all the water bowls you want to drink from. Won't kill you, I'm sure you will get enough to survive; however, you won't EVER get to enjoy them again! ::Shoots the tuna supply the puppy has stockpiled::

If Noctis is impressed that Dolly survived a fight with Kali, I'm wondering if anybody's told her yet that that happened AFTER Nox didn't survive a fight with Dolly?
megados 4th Feb 2017, 6:27 AM edit delete reply

Technically, Nox was in a fight with (about to kill) Democlus and Dolly blew her head off . . . (minor nitpick). :-)

Hmm, I didn't notice it at first but it seems Teedee "lightened up" a bit on this page. Her voice is white instead of gray.
