Agreed calli is a royally ticked of momma bear right now, once she sure Lynn's okay and finishes tearing centy a new one she will be a much more calm happy gracious hostess.
More of a bloodjet, actually. The supplies are cheaper. Blood costs less per ounce than printer ink. (even though when Noctis collects blood, it usually costs someone their life)
Noctis is in evaluation mode, assessing Calliope. Result: she isn't threatening to her charge.
Calliope is being mama bear. She just wants Lynn out of there as fast as possible. She let Lynn go off on her own, and still feels guilt about that; Nova Roma has not been kind to her cub! She wants Lynn back home pronto! Like Noctis says, understandable.
She is in more appropriate attire, at least, but now she's critiquing Lynn's!?
To begin with, Calliope Taylor obviously suffers from "Mary Tyler Moore" disease, which causes one's outfit to spontaneously transform at erratic intervals. So, her advice to Lynn is obviously a form of medical advice not to let the condition progress uncontrollably while Lynn is still young enough to have a hope of controlling it.
Second, we see that, when Calliope first received the news, she was wearing lingeriehere ("Comic 57 - Wake-Up Call"). This progressed rapidly to morning breakfast wear here ("Comic 123 - Negotiations"), which then quickly changed to informal lounging wear here ("Comic 127 - The Plan.."). That didn't last long, though, as Calliope quickly changed into a specialized lab outfit here ("Comic 128 - The Plan.."), which (no doubt) possesses important anti-static properties and other specialized attributes. I only wonder why female lab technicians of my personal acquaintance did not similarly adopt such sensible attire? ^_^
And, ultimately, the point of all of this is that all of this wardrobing took place within Helios Tower. In one's home, one has much less concern about wearing 'proper' or 'improper' attire. But when one is visiting others, or in public, there are certain additional expectations and a more classically formal and conservative outfit might have been a better choice for Lynn, which Calliope is demonstrating by example. ^_^ (At least from the waist up. We don't yet know for certain that she isn't completing her ensemble with some ultra-short hot pants and thigh-high boots. But, it doesn't seem likely. ^_^)
@Gilrandir: In fairness to Calliope (and Cent for that matter), The outfit on page 127 you mentioned, specifically the "Lab Coat" are throwbacks to pre-reboot images, and in most of the post-reboot pages, Calliope has been displaying a lot more modesty with her wardrobe. and on pages 57 though 123. she's in her own home, and isn't a nightie what most women wear when they're sleeping?
Although I will say based on the midriff shown on page 126, she really doesn't have a lot of room to criticize what Lynn is wearing here.
I do think, however, that Cent-Comm said that she would talk to Calliope about where Acantha and Noctis would be staying, and I think that talk may have something to do with Callipe's current attitude.
Out of curiosity, when do what you call the "original" pages end? It's pretty obvious where they start because the reboots look much better, but there have been many gradual changes over the years.
You all make good points! Since Lynn is in 3C med bay, she is really not out in the "public eye", though. I doubt Florence, Noctis, or Acantha gave it any thought. Sure, Calliope is understandably upset, and I can't fault her one bit for wanting to assert herself, it's just that she seems to be doing it over cosmetic issues. "There's a doctor and a shrink waiting to see you, because you went out looking like that!" The bruise isn't bothering her, and she seems to have no other complaints.
The docs aren't because Lynn is wearing something her mom disapproves of. They're because Calli is assuming Lynn needs counseling and medical attention after being kidnapped, roughed up, and threatened with death, not to mention barely escaping from a city that was on fire. She probably doesn't trust Nova Roman medicine or hygienic conditions, which Lynn was exposed to; and she wants to make sure Lynn is not emotionally traumatized.
@kitty, I completely agree that the docs aren't specifically there because of Lynn's outfit, I just found it odd that she used that as her rationale in insisting Lynn leave. She could have said that she wanted Lynn to be looked at to make sure she was OK, because she went through an ordeal, that her well being was important, too.
@DLKmusic, I think that @Gilrandir caught on that I was being a little tongue in cheek with my example of Calliope's whoredrobe (Rose's word) as a contrast In my statement. I know that those are unfair examples for the reason you mention. I can only suspect that Calliope is as much at home in 3C as she is in the tower.
While we're here, I would mention, that I have gone back to reread the archive, because there is a lot to remember, and it's just plain fun. The new pages look great, and they are just "tightened up" so nicely! Good job Cent and Rose!
@megados
Lynn's clothes aren't the rationale that Calli is using to insist that she leave. She's just teasing a bit, mom-style, and rather stiffly; she's Not Happy right now.
Admittedly, I don't "know" Calli well enough yet, and I don't know a lot of the mother-daughter interplay they share. Before this, we only saw, like, fifteen minutes of them interacting before Lynn took off. As such, I would count this as an element of her personality, and her relationship with Lynn. As the story spends some time in NT, I suppose that will be fleshed out more. Thanks for the clarification @Tokyo Rose!
"3C", we are told, is not the same as "Helios Tower". The impression I get is that it is much more like the Capitol Building or the Pentagon -- an office building behind a security cordon, and therefore still 'public', as opposed to the privacy one might expect inside a residential penthouse suite of a large hotel skyscraper (with its own security cordon). Just my opinion, of course.
You are right, certainly. 3C isn't Helios Tower. I hadn't thought of it in terms of an office building, because it seemed that she was usually in a much less populated higher security area.
I don't really know. I have seen the picture of it, and we have been through some of the areas, but I have not seen any map of it or layout. It's possible I missed something? But yes, I had envisioned a relatively small number of humans.
Actually, there is a slightly less mysterious/cool looking, but more telling view on "A new day." (presently at http://datachasers.thecomicseries.com/comics/532/ ). You can prominently see the hangars Ada likes to charge into ;-)
@Centcomm, Thanks! There's also this one that you had posted. Like Sheela said, its a complex. My question is, whereabouts are they in there? (Inside 3C, I mean) There is a lot to it!
The weird thing is, there is actually a fairly large percentage of women in 3D modeling - It's not *just* the men who makes slutwear !
Of course, the women are busy making slutwear for their bishonen elves. XD
Well it is unfortunate at times, (or fortunate depending on your bent), that sex is so widely used as a draw. That being the case, it exerts a bias, such that even the art tools lean toward it. I can understand where it could cause a layer of difficulty.
@Tokyo Rose, I can kind of understand your frustration, because less-than-ideal apparel choices can sometimes detract from the overall impact of a scene. In this instance, my impression of Calli was somewhat colored by her earlier attire. Cent's comment about the earlier costumes serves as a baseline reset that will help in understanding her personality. Thanks, you guys!
I wonder what Calliope is so angry about? I can't think of anything reproachable Lynn has done specifically. Is she distressed that Lynn has apparently developed Stockholm Syndrome?...
She is angry at the whole wide world for harming her child.
And damned be the rest of the universe if it tries to get in her way.
She not angry at Lynn per se, but she is ANGRY in general - Unfortunately, Lynn will have to bear some of it. Mama Bear will be in overprotective mode for a while.
Calliope's in full Mom Mode; happy that her cub is home safe, still shaken up at what's happened and angry more at herself for letting Lynn go on such a life threatening adventure. Like the insert line says, she's not pleased at all in having Nova Roma people in her domain and is feeling more protective of Lynn than usual. She'll straighten out in time once Lynn clues her in on all that went on. Noctis is reading Mom better than Calliope is herself.
Disclaimer: This is a first for me; and quite frankly, I'm not even really into this sort of thing, beyond joking around... But I'd feel like a cop-out if I didn't follow through now ;-) So for better or worse -- here we go!

Still a little groggy from the anaesthetics, Acantha just keeps looking at Lynn for a while, absent-mindedly. Without quite realising it at first, she is taking in a good view of Lynn's chest. The soft fabric of her rather tightly cut, but very loosely buttoned blouse -- shaped by the full, round breasts underneath; even her nipples peeking through. The deeply plunging neckline, not even trying to cover up all of this roundness; and quite a bit of belly also showing, just a few inches lower. Acantha isn't used to this sight: Lynn was rather shy about showing so much skin while in Roma.
As Acantha's eyes are wandering downwards, to observe Lynn's very low-cut jeans -- exposing quite a bit of her shapely hips, along with part of her skimpy panties -- more conscious thoughts are slowly forming in Acantha's mind. As she finally properly realises what she is looking at, she begins to wonder about this unexpected attire.
When her glance finds its way back to Lynn's face, Acantha jumps a little, as she suddenly becomes acutely aware that she has been staring at Lynn's exposed body parts all this time -- while Lynn just looks back at her with a curious smile...
Eager to defuse the situation, Acantha just blurts out the first thing that comes to her mind:
"Lynn, why are you dressed like a prostitute?..."
"Now that's not a nice thing to say!" Lynn retorts, as she puts on a mock-pouting face.
"I...", Acantha begins to stutter an apology in her confusion, instead of coming up with a witty retort; but Lynn immediately breaks out in a happy laugh:
"Relax, princess -- I'm just teasing you, silly thing!"
Acantha is too preoccupied with the situation even to protest Lynn calling her "princess"; while Lynn proceeds to explain in a light-hearted manner:
"I just felt like wearing something that doesn't cramp me."
And then she adds:
"You wouldn't want me to feel cramped around you, would you?" -- while looking straight into Acantha's eyes.
Acantha can't quite make out what this penetrating look signifies. She is mostly just thinking that she never properly noticed how pretty Lynn's eyes are; how beautiful she looks as she stands here right now...
Just before the prolonged stare begins feeling uncomfortable for Acantha, Lynn breaks it off; and puts on a friendly smile, while unceremoniously swinging her firm round buttocks, as she sits down on the edge of Acantha's bed. She throws back her short red hair -- so she can make better eye contact, while sitting sideways from Acantha -- with a neat little twist of her slender long neck; and by doing so, shows off her pretty little ear -- adorned with a shiny but unobtrusive earring -- as well as her smooth cheek. (The non-bruised one.) Acantha meanwhile wonders at herself, why she is suddenly paying such close attention to all these details?...
Not ready to let the topic go just yet, Lynn now purposefully pushes out her chest, tilts her head, puts on a cocky smile, and bats her eyelashes, while asking in a mock-seductive manner:
"So... Do you like what you see?"
And after a small pause for effect, she goes on:
"Would you take on my amorous services?" -- ending with a wink.
Acantha can't help chuckling at this outrageous question. Done with teasing her for now, Lynn completely changes her demeanour a moment later, and proceeds with child-like enthusiasm, as if the exchange just now hadn't happened at all:
"You know, I'd love to ask you how you like Troy so far -- but of course you haven't really seen anything yet, so that would be silly! --"
Acantha is relieved about the change of topic -- but her thoughts haven't moved on yet. Was this really just innocent banter? Wasn't there a hint of nervousness in that quick probing glance Lynn had shot her in between?...
"-- But I'm sure you will love it once you have seen all the great things! There is sooo much for you to see -- just get better soon! Exploring all of Helios Tower alone will take a day! And then we will take Dolly, and make a little tour of the countryside, like she used to take me on as a child -- not the wastes, just near the city, where it's safe! And..."
While talking, without ado, Lynn gently takes Acantha's hand between both of hers. However -- still a bit shaken from the confusing thoughts and feelings she just experienced -- this innocent, friendly gesture gives Acantha a little start; makes her hand jerk just a tiny little bit. Lynn, although she seems totally engrossed in her little talking spree, is acutely aware of this unexpected reaction, and immediately releases her hold, so Acantha can pull away her hand... Except Acantha doesn't. She feels ashamed of her stupid reaction; anxious that she has offended her friend -- yet Lynn just looks at her with a questioning, but very calm, friendly smile.
"Are you alright? Am I making you uneasy?..."
"No, no, not at all, it's fine, really...", Acantha replies in a tone -- along with a matching expression on her face -- that conflate apology with pleading. She doesn't want Lynn to let go of her hand. She enjoys feeling her warmth...
After a moment, Acantha breaks into a smile, as she follows up with,
"Weren't *you* the one afraid of touching?..."
"Guess I got over it", Lynn replies, returning the smile "-- aren't you plenty proud of the big girl I have become?"
Then, glancing around, she proceeds more seriously:
"We aren't exactly in public here; so it should be fine even by Troy standards... Though maybe I better not tell my mom."
As she finishes that last sentence, she already notices her blunder, even before she sees the uneasy look coming up on Acantha's face. She decides to change the subject.
"So, where was I at? Oh, right! We also *have* to go above the city: Troy looks so magnificent from far above -- with Three-Cee, and Helios Tower, and all these many many other buildings! And we can watch for any starships arriving from other planets! Does Roma ever see visitors from places other than Luna? We don't have many of these either really, so it's quite exciting to see each single one. Just yesterday... Err, no, not yesterday, obviously. Before all that silly kidnapping business, you know -- and I really don't blame you, so stop looking at me with that guilty expression!... So, the day before that... There was an emissary from the Crians here. Do you know the Crians? Oh, of course you do, you are quite the scholar after all, preparing to be a very deserving ruler... Maybe you even talked to Aeneas about other civilisations? Well, maybe not -- ancient human lore seems to be the only thing he cares about, or at least he did last I saw him; I'm sure he's better now... You are a quiet one today, aren't you?..."
Acantha has a hard time following Lynn's meandering thoughts, but she enjoys listening to her talking. While her own mind goes wandering, it only gradually enters her conscious thoughts that Lynn -- who is now holding Acantha's left hand in her right one -- is very slowly, gently caressing the top of Acantha's hand with her thumb. Once Acantha realises this, a strange, inexplicable feeling flushes over her...
As Lynn's voice trails off, Acantha further realises that her own eyes have been resting on Lynn's chest again. Since Lynn is sitting on the edge of the bed, half turned in Acantha's direction -- to face her as well as possible -- Lynn's torso is just at the right angle for Acantha to see pretty deep under her loose top: exposing a significant portion of her beautiful, perky breast...
Finally noticing that Lynn has fallen silent, Acantha looks up at her face -- her very pretty face -- which right now has an inquiring look on it. A tiny grin flashes over Lynn's lips, as she realises where Acantha has been staring. Still, she keeps looking right into Acantha's eyes -- even while Acantha becomes flustered, as the situation begins sinking in. Lynn's expression slowly turns to a solid grin, before she starts speaking:
"You know," she begins, still looking into Acantha's eyes unflinchingly; while also squeezing her hand very gently "-- you look seriously cute, all perplexed and bashful like that..."
Then she finally looks down -- perhaps more for Acantha's sake than her own. After a short pause, she continues -- still looking down; using a rather serious tone now:
"I do remember what we said about jumper settings and all... But frankly? --"
She looks up at Acantha from beneath her eyelashes now:
"-- *If* you wanted to seduce me, that would be the way to do it."
After another short pause -- now breaking into a big grin -- she finishes with a wink:
"-- You cunning little Roman minx!"
It takes Lynn a while to realise that Acantha's expression now is not just momentary surprise at her outrageous statement: but rather a genuine, lasting bewilderment -- Lynn overdid it this time; and her addendum did little to defuse it. She lets go of Acantha's hand, and straightens back her shoulders; while her own grin quickly fades. She has a rather serious expression now -- a bit panicked, in fact. She can't decide whether to apologise, or to try laughing it off. Ultimately, she stammers out something that doesn't really qualify as either:
"A... Acantha? You... aren't afraid of me, are you?... I mean... You know I wouldn't jump your bones without your consent!... Err... Hypothetically, I mean... Uh..."
Acantha can't help but laugh at Lynn's little absurdity now.
"Don't be ridiculous -- I am not afraid of you 'jumping my bones', or squashing my hand, or anything like that!", she exclaims.
Lynn is clearly relieved; smiling now, she exclaims in return:
"Glad to hear it! Wouldn't want you afraid of me --"
And after a moment, realising that she might be agitating Acantha too much right now, she adds:
"In fact, I think I scared you enough for today. I guess I better take my leave..."
Acantha is not terribly agitated right now, though -- that's not it. (Luckily... It would be pretty bad if her new heart started pounding wildly, as if it wanted to rip itself right out again.) The laugh relaxed her tension quite a bit. What it didn't change though, is that Acantha is still very confused. Seriously, what is Lynn playing at? Why is she bringing up these things again and again? For innocent banter, wasn't that last one way too intense? The look she had while talking about seducing?... And didn't she gaze into Acantha's eyes a tiny moment too long just now? Wasn't there just a tick too much sparkle in her eyes; weren't her pupils dilated just a little too much? Wasn't she a bit too reluctant while letting go of her hand?...
With all these thoughts in her head, it takes Acantha a while for Lynn's last sentence to register with her. When it finally does, Acantha becomes anxious:
"Are you leaving me?"
"I think I must," Lynn replies; and when Acantha opens her mouth again to utter a weak protest, Lynn -- feeling more bold again -- puts a finger across Acantha's lips, as she adds:
"Don't worry -- I will be back soon."
Acantha is dumbstruck, leaving her mouth half-open without speaking, even as Lynn takes off her finger.
As she is getting up to leave, Lynn continues; her enthusiasm rising again:
"And we *must* hang out together, as soon as you get better -- just the two of us, you know!"
There it is again. Just the two of us? Why would she stress that bit?...
"So, it's bye for now...", Lynn adds, after a little hesitation.
After looking at Acantha for another moment, she now takes some quick strides towards the door; but just before leaving the room, she stops and turns back, giving Acantha a sideways look. She raises her hand towards her face. Is she... Is she going to blow Acantha a kiss?... No, she stops mid-air, a little hesitant; then just gives her a cute little wave with her pretty little fingers. She smiles warmly for a moment -- or perhaps longingly? -- before finally turning away and leaving.
Acantha is trying to process what just happened. After a while, she realises that Noctis is still standing near the foot of her bad -- as she has been this entire time: completely motionless, just calmly observing the scene in front of her. She has her usual, almost expressionless face; with just a hint of curiosity; and perhaps... Bemusement?...
Acantha never really gave much thought to Noctis's expressions -- but now she realises that this is one she has seen on her quite often. What is going on behind this doll-like face? What is she thinking? What... What is she thinking about what she saw just now?!...
Well, *did* she see anything? Was there really anything to see -- or is Acantha just imagining things? Were these really just friendly gestures, after all? Is she becoming paranoid?...
As she contemplates in her mind the picture of Lynn's face in front of her -- her haunting eyes, her pretty mouth; her finger touching Acantha's own lips... As she sees; *feels* these vivid, enticing scenes in her head -- it finally begins to dawn upon her:
Perhaps the truth is that deep down inside her, she is *hoping* it was not just meaningless banter...
I am sincerely not secretly loving this, nor shipping them a bit myself now. I hate it. No offense meant to you, antrik--I know you're doing it as a joke and the writing is actually not bad--but goddamn hell no.
Not offended -- I didn't expect you (or anyone, for that matter) to ship them because of this, or to secretly love it -- I know you hate the idea :-) (Though hopefully not so seriously as to be really angry about it?...)
Nevertheless, I *did* actually hope you'd say something about the writing. (I just realised that this has to be the first piece of fiction I *ever* published... Way to start a reputation! ;-) ) I think I can live with "not bad" :-)
(As for writing fiction, the problem is that while I can be fairly creative given the right circumstances, I generally lack inspiration -- my head is not exactly swarming with stories I want to tell...)
Actually, a situation like this calls for Piranhas. Actually 'Piranha Solution' where organics dissolve into gas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLpSapjKcxM
Although this is meant as a joke, I *did* get quite ambitious about actually trying to make it a good read -- so I'm very glad someone appreciates the result :-)
I also think you fired up rose I was wondering what that thunder from the other side of Phoenix was.. I guess rose is bringing out the BIG guns.
I actually im keeping this one.. It would have worked perfect in the porn version of DC.. Of course Acantha would have to be 18 rather than 16!!!! Perv...
@Centcomm why, my story doesn't allude to the characters' ages... If they just *happen* to remind people of certain characters of yours, some of whom might be underage -- what am I to do? [shrug] ;-)
More importantly, I didn't actually bring porn into the picture -- you did :-P
(PS. I'm very happy you like my story well enough to keep it :-) )
Calliope's concerns and Lynn's concerns are not even in the same rooms of the house, and as far as Acantha is concerned, she's barely a post-it note on Calli's refrigerator. However, I'm sure Lynn will rectify the situation quickly. (Mom, I gotta stay with her. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for her. I owe her!)
What Calliope is going to need is her own therapist to realize this isn't the same daughter she let leave. Lynn has passed through her own trial of death, destruction, terror and flame. She's experienced war and torture up front and personal and her soul's been forged and tempered in ways she's not even begun to understand. Her friendship with Acantha is just the start.
Mom has a lot to learn.
And then ...
... when people expect it the least :
Lynn : "But mooom, she followed me home, I have to adopt her!"
Acantha : "Wait, what ?"
Calliope : "ABSOLUTELY NOT !!"
Lynn : "Why the no ?"
Calliope : "Why ? .... WHY ???!!!"
Lynn : "Yeah, why ?" *Noctis ducks behind a bulkhead*
Acantha : "Oh Lynn, you shouldn't have..."
Calliope : "AAARRRRGGGGHHH TEENAGERS !!"
Lynn : "But mooom, her real father was that shapeshifting Epiphyte that you had an affair with while you were married with Dad!"
Lynn : "She can be trusted, she's practically family!" *Calliope turns perfectly still*
Lynn : "Mom ?"
Acantha : "Uhh .. say, Lynn, did you know that Half-Epiphytes have severe allergies to Regenerex ?"
Lynn : "No, why ?"
Noctis : "..."
Acantha : "..."
Calliope : "..."
Lynn : " ................. waaaaiiit a minute!"
I follow them home, then I terrorrize the cat, eat it's food and hide under the kids bed, making strange noises.
It's hard work, but a Doggy gotta do what a Doggy has to do!
Any strange doggies hiding under my kids beds would have encountered a business of ferrets during their romping time. I pity the doggy, though the cat would have probably gotten a big laugh out of it. (But then she thought she was a big ferret as well.)
Luckily most ferrets have the attention span of a goldfish, and will have forgotten why they were sent by the time they reach halfways across the floor.
By the time they reach me, I can easily bribe them with Tuna. :D
aww mt 14 ferrets must be broken then,, they have a very long memory...
...if we wax the floor,, they line up for us to spin em like a top, then slide em across the 20 foot floor,,, they come back for more,, squeaking the whole way.!!
Interestingly, I don't think Noctis is really registering to Calliope. The bodyguard comment barely got a brush-off (even Acantha barely got more than "hello"). I wonder when the implications of Noctis-as-Cassian will hit (or if she's even aware of the Cassians at all)?
Actually, it's even more pertinent to the "overprotective Mama Bear" mentality. Cassians in general (& Noctis in particular) are, as we've seen, capable of truly frightening levels of violence. And Lynn is in the room with one, with no Dolly around to intercede. Do remember that Calli, while stable now, wobbled a bit close to the edge right after Lynn was taken. Threats to her daughter, even circumstances just perceived as threats, might provoke overreaction.
I quickly dismissed this consideration after realising that if Calliope was seriously afraid of that, she would have never allowed Lynn to get in there at all, regardless of the patient's state...
I don't think Calliope perceive Noctis as an active threat.
Sure, she COULD be, but she's had so many opportunities to slaughter Lynn already, that it would make no sense for her to suddenly do it now. She's probably a bit weary of anything New Roman at this point, but if Centcomm says "Your child is safe in that room, even with the Cassian in it", then Calliope is ready to believe it - After all, violence is something Centcomm knows VERY well.
Is this the first time Calliope and Lynn have met up since their arrival? I mean - no heartfelt greeting, no hug, no emotional bonding at all, just "off to the shrink for you, young lady"? Such coldness could serve to drive her into the arms of-
Anti-shipping missile: *descends* *BOOOOOOOM!!!*
Ow. So, where is Kyle when they need each other?
Tokyo Rose: Keep it moving, keep it moving, keep it moving! You've got urgent business back in New Troy when this is finished, boy blue! You're going to prevent a shipping disaster in which many hundreds might be killed - BY ME!
Kyle was tragically shot down by many, MANY missiles when he flew over a Murderturd.
The Murderturd is well pleased, it got a free meal after all .... it's still angry at that rock over there though - But - Well, it's a rock, it had it coming!
No, this isn't the first time Calli and Lynn have met since Lynn's return. Calli wanted to take Lynn straight to Helios Tower and keep her there, but Lynn insisted on returning to 3C to sit with Acantha. That's caused a tiny bit of family friction.
It's not device that matters, but IP address. So if one device is on your home wifi, but another on cellular data, they can both vote. But if both on home wifi, they will duplicate.
I too had doubts about her outfit but then I remembered that, in the future, they have gravity defying technology that precludes the need for more visible means of support to...certain things
Keep up the good work; luckily for you I am more amazed than envious of your work or I would being saying less positive things...so keep up the great work even though it makes the stuff I do not as popular as the cool shit you put out...I mean... curse you!!!
Momma just wants her daughter away from all of them.. She still needs to sort it all out. All Calliope know is her daughter was being held by the brother of this person. She dose not know how close Lynn and Acantha have become and that Acantha was abused as well.
As a mother myself I say Calliope is holding together well!
Actually, Lynn has sent her a message, stating that Acantha is her new friend, and that she needed help.
That said, she *is* in overprotective mode right now, and would like nothing else than grounding Lynn in the safest room in Helius Tower ... forever!
She's overreacting, of course, but that's what moms do best.
All the attention seems to be on Lynn and Calliope which is expected as it is the focus of the strip but think about it from the perspective of Acantha and Noctis.
They are in a foreign, hostile country, far from home and without any means of returning, and about to be totally abandoned without a known or friendly face to be seen. Ada has already disappeared and Lynn is about to go. Cent-comm has already made it very clear to Noctis that she is being tolerated at best and is being targeted most likely. Calliope is certainly not giving out any friendly vibes to either. Acantha has just woken up in a strange place to find that she effectively has come back from the dead. She could be forgiven for feeling a bit overwhelmed! Noctis has been stripped of her weapons (although she is not "weaponless"), and Acantha is too fragile to move. Both are now dependent on the largesse of hosts that don't seem too happy with their presence or even continued existence. Strange, perhaps hostile environment, without resources and vulnerable. Have a pleasant day. Right!
While anxiety is an emotion that probably is not in Noctis' vocabulary it probably is something Acantha will soon be feeling. I know I sure as hell would be.
Nice write-up -- but at a basic level, I think it's more or less a given that this is why Lynn is so reluctant to leave, which is the whole reason for the conflict between Lynn and her mom.
(Though I think it would be prudent to leave the room at least for a moment, rather then arguing in front of Acantha...)
Considering Lynn is both her only peer, friend of like age, savior, and as close to a sister as she will ever get. It is understandable she will feel abandoned by Lynn and hated by Cali unsure if she is a prisoner, hostage, begger,or just possibly an honored guest. Nooctis in clothing she would never wear in Nova Roma, stripped of her sword, digesting she is the last of her Dynasty is more than a bit disconcerting wakingup to find she was clinically dead puts the cherry on a shit sundae.
I think Noctis rather expected this, she has almost 2 hours to think about it on the flight to New Troy, and more time since then on top of that - I don't think it would rattle Noctis to be left alone with Acantha for a while. Heck, she might even enjoy it.
Acantha on the other hand, while a strong young lady, is more rattled than she lets on - And She could definitely use Lynn's company.
at this point, I'm halfway expecting Lynn to bring Acantha with her, bodyguard and all.
Calliope would probably accept Acantha, but balk at having Noctis in her tower.
It'll be interesting to see what the dynamic duo comes up with. :)
Florence is more obviously non-human than Noctis, so it isn't that surprising. Also, you've had time to get to know Noctis in a variety of different situations, leading you to the illusion that you understand her personality more and can better predict what she might do under many different circumstances. Florence has been seen only in a sharply delineated role under very controlled circumstances, giving us very little of her character as a person -- not to mention occupying a role for which there is a commonplace and widespread perception of institutional distrust.
"Creepy" is a sensation I believe is often associated with a subtle or insidious attack of an unexpected nature from an unexpected quarter. Most people by now are probably assuming that if Noctis were to attack them it would be swift and abrupt, but not subtle or insidious.
All that having been said, give Florence 200-300 pages and you might regard her as fondly as you do Dr. Demark. Once you get past the glowy eyes. ^_^
It's not just the non-human part. And while familiarity certainly helps, as far as I can tell, humans are rather hard-wired to consider certain looks more or less creepy. I have no doubt we might regard Florence fondly (she seems a nice person so far) -- but she will still look creepy...
I agree completely, @Ebonbolt, and am hoping that my careful word choice disabuses anyone of the notion that _I_ don't imagine Noctis to be capable of subtle or insidious attacks. That having been said, 'creepy' is an illusion that happens in the mind of the onlooker, not a phenomenon that happens in objective reality. Noctis creates the _impression_ that threats from her would be of the straightforward (albeit probably graphic) sort, rather than twisted and indirect.
Put her in clown makeup, with a big painted smile and two rouge dots on her cheeks, though, and watch people's creep-o-meter readings rise, even though the underlying reality hasn't changed in the slightest. ^_^
I don't think of myself as liking creepiness. I'm not even a big fan of horror. I like humor, and things that are bold, and bright, and occasionally tragic. In addition to liking clowns, I like musicals, so I suppose my faults are extensive, systemic, and irredeemable. And, age notwithstanding, there are probably folk of my acquaintance who would dispute with you if you tried to describe me as 'adult'. ^_^
I like clowns, but specifically, those who are good at their art. A proper clown is an entertainer, not just somebody in colorful accoutrements and makeup, stinking of gin.
As far as clowns being creepy, there are creepy ones but those are usually among the latter.
I'm not contesting that clowns *can*, in theory at least, be good entertainers -- but why can't they *just* be good entertainers, without looking like serial killers? ;-)
To answer a frivolous question as seriously as I can ... (Disclaimer: I am not any kind of historian, especially in the fields of entertainment and drama. I would love to say that I have never been any kind of clown, but honesty compels me to admit that the best I can do is to say I have never been paid for it. ^_^)
I suspect it is because clowns need even more exaggerated facial expressions and visual cues so as to communicate nonverbally with even the customers far from the ring in the cheap seats. The exaggerated and highly contrasted face paints simulate the desired facial expression, without regard for the clown's actual expression, at the cost of obliterating the subtle details and nuances which convey so much of the information people learn to use to assess honesty and sincerity (e.g., microexpressions probably get completely lost).
So, clownface is perceived as intended to obscure and deceive, telling the onlooker what the clown wants him to believe, rather than the truth of whatever the clown is actually feeling. People see that intent to deceive and it registers on their creep-o-meter, even though, for an honest clown, it's not deception at all, just part of the performance.
I have to admit, I never looked at it this way. It might actually alter my perception of clown costumes a little bit... Though it won't change the fact that I hate them ;-)
Your opinions and your perceptions are your own, I would never think of changing them. ^_^ You, and those who raised, educated, and shaped you have spent a lifetime making them just the way they are. Claim them as yours by right and be proud of them! Or, if you prefer, polish up the old or make new ones to your current tastes. It is all up to you.
@JacobJSebastian well, I for my part don't consider Noctis creepy at all (never did); and I already mentioned that I consider Florence pretty creepy-looking...
While Noctis is watching the two girls mess about on the bed, Noctis is wondering if they will recharge her swords powercell while it's in the holding cell.
It's a delicate thing, and it might be scared of the dark, poor swordy sword !
@megados seeing what Noctis thinks would be "interesting" indeed -- but I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader ;-)
Truth be told, I actually have no idea what Noctis would think of this scene. Certainly she would have to give it *some* consideration, to ascertain whether the strange things going on might in any way endanger her charge -- which might or might not be hilarious :-) But beyond that, I'd say it's anyone's best guess at this point whether she would be amused, confused, fascinated, or just not interested whatsoever...
And I think she's mildly surprised to find out that Calli isn't giving off bad vibes.
However, she's more concerned about Lynn, than angry with Acantha.
Decimus on the other hand .. well, Decimus is no more ... which is probably a good thing for him.
Mama Bear = RAWR!
And here I thought she was an inkjet?
She slices, she dices. She could probably make Julian INTO fries.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXdy3U6S_SQ&feature=youtu.be&t=27
Calliope is being mama bear. She just wants Lynn out of there as fast as possible. She let Lynn go off on her own, and still feels guilt about that; Nova Roma has not been kind to her cub! She wants Lynn back home pronto! Like Noctis says, understandable.
She is in more appropriate attire, at least, but now she's critiquing Lynn's!?
Look at what Calliope was wearing just after Lynn was kidnapped here
Second, we see that, when Calliope first received the news, she was wearing lingerie here ("Comic 57 - Wake-Up Call").
Currently. That is where i am more or less happy with the story and the art. as far as SLT's go i groan every time i hear that.. Pervs...
Lynn's clothes aren't the rationale that Calli is using to insist that she leave. She's just teasing a bit, mom-style, and rather stiffly; she's Not Happy right now.
And, more importantly, it houses Centcomm's Core as well.
It's basically Centcomm's most innermost sanctum, and only a few are allowed in.
This building is the above ground interface with the Cent-comm AIS and the brain of New Troy along with the centeral building in NT
Helios Tower is in " Platinum Sector " and 3cee is in Zero Sector....
(And to be perfectly clear, that's just an observation, not approval...)
Of course, the women are busy making slutwear for their bishonen elves. XD
Damn hormones, I swear.
And damned be the rest of the universe if it tries to get in her way.
She not angry at Lynn per se, but she is ANGRY in general - Unfortunately, Lynn will have to bear some of it. Mama Bear will be in overprotective mode for a while.
However, Dolly saw some of their interaction so could testify in Acantha's favour.
Tokyo Rose have said so, it is canon !
Shots fired, launch ze missiles !
DO YOU WANT AN APOCALYPSE?! BECAUSE THAT'S HOW YOU GET AN APOCALYPSE
Disclaimer: This is a first for me; and quite frankly, I'm not even really into this sort of thing, beyond joking around... But I'd feel like a cop-out if I didn't follow through now ;-) So for better or worse -- here we go!
---
Still a little groggy from the anaesthetics, Acantha just keeps looking at Lynn for a while, absent-mindedly.
Perhaps the truth is that deep down inside her, she is *hoping* it was not just meaningless banter...
i will burn you to the ground and piss on the ashes
then I will sculpt the ash-piss-mud into a small effigy of you
and then I will burn it again
and repeat this process until literally nothing burnable remains
and then I will sculpt one more tiny little effigy
and LAUNCH IT INTO THE FUCKING SUN
So you didn't like my story. Who would have thought.
Thanks though for these encouraging words -- I think I'll print this and frame it as a trophy :-P
Like OMG !
Well done Antrik. :)
... secretly Rose is loving this!
She might even be shipping them a bit herself, by now!
Too bad @Tokyo Rose keeps this dark secret well hidden...
Wait wait wait... Wasn't there something about you notoriously digging out things people are trying to hide?... ;-)
I am sincerely not secretly loving this, nor shipping them a bit myself now. I hate it. No offense meant to you, antrik--I know you're doing it as a joke and the writing is actually not bad--but goddamn hell no.
Nevertheless, I *did* actually hope you'd say something about the writing. (I just realised that this has to be the first piece of fiction I *ever* published... Way to start a reputation! ;-) ) I think I can live with "not bad" :-)
I'd be really angry about it if it weren't perfectly clear that you're kidding. :D
This is seriously the first piece of fiction you've let out into the wild? That's genuinely surprising; you've got a pretty good style going. :D
(As for writing fiction, the problem is that while I can be fairly creative given the right circumstances, I generally lack inspiration -- my head is not exactly swarming with stories I want to tell...)
Perv...
LOL J/K :D
More importantly, I didn't actually bring porn into the picture -- you did :-P
(PS. I'm very happy you like my story well enough to keep it :-) )
That sounds intriguing.
Fire ALL ze missilez !
o/' it's so easy when you're evil...this is the life you see, the devil tips his hat to me o/'
Somehow, I don't think Mr. Black would be happy about dating an ice-queen .. literally !
Mom has a lot to learn.
... when people expect it the least :
Lynn : "But mooom, she followed me home, I have to adopt her!"
Acantha : "Wait, what ?"
Calliope : "ABSOLUTELY NOT !!"
Lynn : "Why the no ?"
Calliope : "Why ? .... WHY ???!!!"
Lynn : "Yeah, why ?"
*Noctis ducks behind a bulkhead*
Acantha : "Oh Lynn, you shouldn't have..."
Calliope : "AAARRRRGGGGHHH TEENAGERS !!"
Lynn : "But mooom, her real father was that shapeshifting Epiphyte that you had an affair with while you were married with Dad!"
Lynn : "She can be trusted, she's practically family!"
*Calliope turns perfectly still*
Lynn : "Mom ?"
Acantha : "Uhh .. say, Lynn, did you know that Half-Epiphytes have severe allergies to Regenerex ?"
Lynn : "No, why ?"
Noctis : "..."
Acantha : "..."
Calliope : "..."
Lynn : " ................. waaaaiiit a minute!"
!!!! LOST IN TRANSLATION !!!!
As for following home... You do not happen to have experience with that, do you? ;-)
And people usually don't follow me home, I have to stalk them the hard way. :(
I follow them home, then I terrorrize the cat, eat it's food and hide under the kids bed, making strange noises.
It's hard work, but a Doggy gotta do what a Doggy has to do!
By the time they reach me, I can easily bribe them with Tuna. :D
...if we wax the floor,, they line up for us to spin em like a top, then slide em across the 20 foot floor,,, they come back for more,, squeaking the whole way.!!
I wish I could see that. :D
Her child is *RIGHT THERE*, and she's in overprotective Mama Bear mode.
Everything else can damn well wait for her, including the Cassians.

Vote at work, too! And at Starbucks on the way!
As a mother myself I say Calliope is holding together well!
That said, she *is* in overprotective mode right now, and would like nothing else than grounding Lynn in the safest room in Helius Tower ... forever!
She's overreacting, of course, but that's what moms do best.
SHARE!!!!
(Though I think it would be prudent to leave the room at least for a moment, rather then arguing in front of Acantha...)
I would note here that, while she rarely needs to employ it, Noctis IS capable of subtlety.
Put her in clown makeup, with a big painted smile and two rouge dots on her cheeks, though, and watch people's creep-o-meter readings rise, even though the underlying reality hasn't changed in the slightest. ^_^
As far as clowns being creepy, there are creepy ones but those are usually among the latter.
Just be sure to sign your work. ^_^
Truth be told, Noctis' thought bubbles would be . . . interesting.
It's a delicate thing, and it might be scared of the dark, poor swordy sword !
