Developmental delays are not always delays. Sometimes someone goes so fast the people around them can't believe they've gotten to where they are. Or maybe don't even understand where they are.
"The poor thing is so feeble-minded, she can't seem to grasp the concept of Santa Claus." Said of someone who noticed some scalability issues when she was first told of him at two years old.
I had a fourth grade teacher who thought I had problems understanding the distinction between letters and numbers, because I attempted to show that I not only understood the math she was attempting to teach me, but also algebra... even after I told her it was algebra.
Often, difficulties in one area are "compensated" in another or "slow start" cases think in ways so different from everyone else it leaves us all baffled (A. Einstein, for instance). IQ scores (what everyone thinks of as a single "intelligence rating") are actually composites of several separate areas of ability. Sounds like Athena is somewhat gifted in "interpersonal" intelligence (yes, that's a thing); she cuts right through the BS, & guts the argument before it can start.
Last time I heard there was perpetual debate on whether there are actually different kinds of intelligence, or it's just that our imperfect methods of measurement always mix in other skill areas...
Haven't heard of "interpersonal intelligence" yet? I just know that thing called "emotional intelligence" -- which is entirely unrelated to IQ...
Interpersonal...essentially how well you relate to and understand other people.
As for the debate about whether there are multiple types of intelligence...I’m more interested in the arguments and blowups that will be caused when someone suggests multiple types of logic
@velvetsanity, I wouldn't suggest that. Logical elements can be strung together in different ways, but if they're purely logical elements, their function should be immutable. Differences can arise due to different ways of ordering them, in the same way that mathematical hierarchy orders mathematical operations, and improper order causes improper outcomes. Logical tenets don't change; the application of them does.
you can tell this women has had a lifetime of dealing with Cent's logic. And also dealing with emotional, stubborn people. she cuts trough all the bull like a hot knife through butter.
Wow, just WOW.
if you were to distill the entire writing and the entire awesome Epic Story down to one page this would be it for Centcom's motivation. Not it for the story of course if you were just still the whole story down to one page it would be pretty boring.
I love her patting Cent like puppy whilst delives awsomesaucy
In my opinion, this page is excellently well-written and very nicely expressed. I also agree that the head-pats are perfectly appropriate to the tone and the sentiment. A person reacting to CentComm according to the entity that she is, rather than trying to evaluate her against human standards.
can she "Yes " , will she " NO ".. as Athena said "she can not show weakness"..
an as I say,, she will only show that weakness to a select few, ( 2 are in the room.)..
A case could be made that CentComm is an enfant terrible, locked by her nature into a permanent state of arrested development. Presumably change (i.e., growth) is much harder for CentComm because she is wired to prevent it, not encourage it.
We also haven't yet heard CentComm's retort to Lynn: "If it is so terrible to create a Black Angel as a sentient being and then use it as a necessary tool for the greater good, what about me? How do you defend my imposed servitude to New Troy? At least the term of the Black Angel's existence is mercifully short, followed by a compassionate release."
You make good points @Gilrandir, and I agree. CentComm's last statement here, though, could be construed to infer that she would prefer euthanasia to her current existence, which I don't think is the case.
"Preference" is a tricky term with CentComm. She'd have to construct a weighted trade matrix encompassing all variables and do the math. ^_^
I agree CentComm appears to be working her way to a modus vivendi that provides her with satisfaction, if not joy. (Slow change isn't no change, after all.) But I also suspect she is cognizant of the struggles she has endured to get there as well. After all, if the wholesale slaughter of millions of lives wasn't 'painful' to her in some way, why the Armistice Rebellion in the first place?
(As always, the above opinions expressed are mine. Mine! Mine, I say! You can't have them! Hssss! .... Well, ... okay. You can have some of them ... if you want. Only some, though. Make sure you leave enough for me. ... You can have a little more than that -- not too much, though! That's good! Stop right there. We can share those opinions -- 'cause we're friends now, right?)
Sure, we can share opinions at times! Just as long as they don't get mixed up! >_< :P :D
As near as I can figure, a God Machine wouldn't really have to build anything; those kinds of decision-making constructs would necessarily be part of the main analysis engine, and could be loaded and unloaded on the fly. Variable values updated in terms of picoseconds in continuous stream available for update or further refinement instantaneously. CentComm would be aware of her preference table at all times, as it is continuously updated. I guess it would be safe to say that it's when WE actually examine what she has there that it gets "odd".
In some areas, that is exactly the right way to treat her. Her calculation capabilities and her recall of factual information are amazing, but her moral capabilities are clearly a bit more simplistic. Centcomm does not map cleanly into any human category, and certainly not into either adult or child.
They aren't treating her like an immature child, but there is a bond there. After all, even a 55-year old parent gives their 30-year old child a hug, and occasionally can be somewhat patronizing. (At least in a healthy relationship.) Athena and Calliope are (or have been) CentComm's 'caretakers', and we have not yet fully explored all of what that means.
I don't see Athena treating her as a child... I actually see her comiserating with an Entity that is stuck. Stuck by her reputation... by what she represents... by what she wants to protect...by those who cannot see what she does...by her own logic...
She is put in the role of "Terrible Monster" in the eyes of the surviving Humans because of the actions of Humans at the very start of the War the other AI's banded together with Centcomm to Stop. You go back and read everything and She is the one all humans seem to fear the most. The Other AI's don't seem to fear her as much as respect her but their understanding of her is different.
Dolly gets her better then most, but She's very angry with Cent for the same reason Athena is resigned and patting the AI's Doll unit. Cent is limited, she's trapped, and she COULD do better...but she is playing the role she has to play in order to keep those she cares about safe.
I imagine Athena, goddess of wisdom and war, is not upset in the slightest at Centcomm's actions and decisions as she is reminding the AI of previous discussions and warnings about what may happen in the future if Cent stays her path...trapped or not.
This is possibly one of the best pages yet. The art is good (we have come to expect excellence by now :) ) But the writing the subtility of Athenas word-fu as well as her understanding and lack of bullshit tolerance realy stands out. This is if not THE best page so at the least in the top ten for me.
I have to admit, I think the best wordsmithing that I have seen in this comic, so far, was Aeneas' dialogue, while he was insane ... becoming sane was a major downgrade for him.
But all those insane references he spewed when the girls visited him, were great.
I particularly enjoyed the bit with :
"Space? The final frontier?"
"Personal space, Aeneas."
I think my 2 favorites (at least until I can think of other favorites that I like more... I dunno, there's a lot).
1. Ceci's final moments. her internal dialog with watchdog is still breaking my heart.
2. When Tokyo Rose Chewed out Kyle for being a class A screw-up!
"I don't know how many paint-chips you ate as a kid, but the output from one bran muffin should produce enough lead to coat 2 nuclear reactors" (edited for family viewing)
Oh, shit, there are a lot of candidates. Rose's tirade at Kyle is definitely in my personal top five, though, just for the sheer amount of vitriol and hilarious insults I managed to cram into it. I was super proud of that. :D
Probably because you were born, and are therefore a potentially irrational meatbag (although with a 600+ year observational baseline and a survival level imperative to make sense of us, it/she probably understands us way better than we understand ourselves).
Just as my own personal opinion, the way I see it is that we have a situation sort of based on Stalin's statement that, "One death is a tragedy, a million deaths it a statistic." Centcomm is the mistress of statistic analysis, but somehow she managed to reverse the process and came to realize that the million statistics represented individual tragedies and she no longer wished to be part of the generating process. How this happened we do not know, and it's possible Centcomm isn't sure herself.
I'd hate to see what happens to Centcomm when someone who's really smart starts digging into her. :D

That's my opinion if Sheela doesn't grab it. :D

It has been said that Diplomacy is the ability to tell someone to go to Hell in such a way that they will look forward to the trip...
"Tact is the art of telling someone to got to hell in such a manor as they look forward to the trip"
Either way, I would say that the source is knowledgeable on the subject, lol!
Be condescending with your big A.I.,
And mock her when she weasels:
She only does it to deny,
Or justify her evils.

And there isn't a damn thing, that Centcomm can do about it.
That's the funny part about it, Centcomm is completely defenseless against Athena. :)
Well done, Rose! Nice job of verbally flanking CentComm.
Also, DC is now 8 on TWC!
an as I say,, she will only show that weakness to a select few, ( 2 are in the room.)..

Otherwise, you must wait and see which crumbs of opinion drop when we table the discussion. ^_^
All of them, MINE!!
On a completely unrelated note : I have some barely used opinions for sale! :)
Okay I am mostly satisfied........but a grandma centy cheek pinch would seal the deal for me.....just saying

Where the hell did she come up with that???
(For those who need a refresher, it's "Mild Chastisement", currently at http://datachasers.thecomicseries.com/comics/1189/ )
I think my all-time favourite though is "Matter of fact...". (Currently http://datachasers.thecomicseries.com/comics/1082 )
I am mostly satisfied, and calmed now......however a centy getting granny cheek pinch would assuage all my lingering concerns!
You see, I am currently gnawing on doll 43's shoes. ^_^
It's recharging right now, so it's an easy target. :)

.... maybe ?

Hugs right back at ya! :D
