It's good to have the adults in charge!
Sheela 31st Oct 2017, 11:06 PM edit delete reply

Especially when they actually ACT like adults !

And finally, someone with a bit of knowledge about New Rome.
Heck, if Centcomm had asked Athena before sending the team, she would probably have had twice as much info as she acted upon.
Don B. 2nd Nov 2017, 3:54 PM edit delete reply
CemtComm IS an AI originally designed to oversee strategic matters. I'm not even sure she was self aware when first constructed. One thing that seems clear to me is that she wasn't originally programmed for diplomacy. I would imagine that's why the Taylors have the over-ride capability in the first place. Calliope was no help until the end and it may never have occurred to Cent to seek advice from Athena. God knows she made enough mistakes in this affair even if Lynn did make it home. I'm not even sure she is capable of empathy which may be a result of being VERY focused on her job. Which would probably be another reason for the over-ride.
velvetsanity 2nd Nov 2017, 8:28 PM edit delete reply

I’m sure that from CentComm's perspective, 'seeking advice' = 'weakness'
Sheela 3rd Nov 2017, 12:49 AM edit delete reply

Empathy ?
CentComm ?
cattservant 31st Oct 2017, 9:19 PM edit delete reply

It took Cent-Comm three ellipses to process that one.
megados 31st Oct 2017, 9:28 PM edit delete reply

About ten man-years of processing! XD
Sheela 31st Oct 2017, 11:07 PM edit delete reply

CentComm is nothing, if not inefficient ?
Ebonbolt 4th Nov 2017, 12:09 AM edit delete reply

To be fair, the first one probably only had a few dozen processors running it, the second about a hundred, and the third maybe a thousand at the outside. Mostly, Cent was processing just how much growth this implies in Lynn's character, both in accepting the need for expressing gratitude, and in the exact content of her statement.
megados 31st Oct 2017, 9:24 PM edit delete reply

Athena gets all the good Intel. It's impressive that they know the Cassian chain of command. Meanwhile, CentComm gets a lesson in Diplomacy 101. Athena's multi-pronged approach has quelled several disagreements simultaneously. Well done! (both for Athena's efforts, and the storytelling thereof) :D

I do agree with Athena, though; Kali did deserve better. They all did.
cattservant 31st Oct 2017, 9:40 PM edit delete reply

The androids are kind of redshirted...
Sheela 31st Oct 2017, 11:09 PM edit delete reply

You could say, that the New Romans were forced into their redshirt roles.

But yeah, Kali deserved better, so did Malati for that matter.
I wonder if Noctis will have a chance to get some psuchotherapy as well, to help her handle her trauma so she doesn't end up like TeeDee ?
Timotheus 7th Nov 2017, 11:11 AM edit delete reply

Did you really mean "psuchotherapy" (as in "SUCK-otherapy") or was it just a perfectly reasonable spelling error? (Y-U transposed) Just wondering because it works so well either way.
Gilrandir 1st Nov 2017, 1:57 AM edit delete reply
Not all the good info. It could be very amusing to watch the expression on Athena's face when she learns about the Apocalypse Node. Because, as espionage failures go, that's a big one!
megados 1st Nov 2017, 5:09 AM edit delete reply

That's true, @Gilrandir. That was kind of a big intelligence gap.

I'd say the Cassians weren't intended to be redshirts. Under Decimus, their role was subverted and twisted.

It seems that androids, like humans, each have their own coping mechanisms and abilities. Noctis is pretty level headed, and seems to be coping well, so far. It couldn't hurt to have an evaluation, though.
Rashala 31st Oct 2017, 11:37 PM edit delete reply

Dolly has a look of when did I lose control here?

And yeah I like this grandma she and I seem to have comparable ideas and thoughts.

PS no cheek pinch huh?
guest 1st Nov 2017, 8:33 AM edit delete reply
yeah,, that look.. but shes turning to Calliope.
Timotheus 1st Nov 2017, 9:53 AM edit delete reply

I really doubt that Dolly has been at all fazed by Athena, considering their history. She's been experiencing the ride since the day she took the Taylor contract.
Tokyo Rose 2nd Nov 2017, 2:59 PM edit delete reply

Dolly: "The student has surpassed the master. I am so freaking proud of her."
Ictuan 1st Nov 2017, 2:02 PM edit delete reply
I thought Dolly's look really belonged on Cent. The look of "processing.... processing.... processing.... bzzzt processing..."
mjkj 31st Oct 2017, 11:39 PM edit delete reply

Wow, grandma is s awesome... Lynn to thank Cent and knows her stuff...

StellarJay 1st Nov 2017, 2:34 AM edit delete reply

While everyone is still trying to regain orientation after the dizzying whirlwind of Athena, I like that Leo stands there with that little smirk that says, "Yeah, I see this all the time."
Sheela 1st Nov 2017, 3:40 AM edit delete reply

"Knew it was coming."
Sheela 1st Nov 2017, 3:42 AM edit delete reply

Oh nice, Rank 5 on top webcomics list.
megados 1st Nov 2017, 5:01 AM edit delete reply

Very nice!
chk 1st Nov 2017, 10:52 AM edit delete reply

Yeah. I noticed that. Sweet.
Howard 1st Nov 2017, 3:54 AM edit delete reply
I loved how she does not bat an eye when Lynn tells her that the new head of state just shot her own brother and then said brother was set on fire by his own bodyguard.
Siren 1st Nov 2017, 11:26 AM edit delete reply
Perhaps all this drama is simply expected from New Roman politics...
Ebonbolt 1st Nov 2017, 8:05 PM edit delete reply

I'm betting Athena had the chance to meet Decimus (obviously she met Kali). That's likely all she needed to get a good read on him.
Don B. 2nd Nov 2017, 4:13 PM edit delete reply
Howard, I'm sure Athena has seen and heard worse. Calliope lost her husband during an attack traveling through the wastelands if I recall correctly. I'm not sure if Minx is still at the Taylors but she was rescued from rape and torture by Officer Ray. With Athena being old enough to be a grandma, the state of the world outside New Troy, and being a self confessed "gossip-monger of the highest order", her aplomb in this discussion doesn't surprise me in the least. There is also the fact of her being a diplomat though I'm not sure how long she's been at it.
guest 1st Nov 2017, 8:36 AM edit delete reply
also.. WOOT.!! #5 in TWC..
Deoxy 1st Nov 2017, 9:56 AM edit delete reply
"Sorry to hear that. Kali deserved better."

For all the crap thrown at Decimus, that's honestly the best and strongest insult in the bunch. Might even be the most accurate, for bonus points.

And that "thank you" to CentComm seems just about right - right at the edge of politeness, but not quite falling off, while still making it QUITE clear that CentComm is not viewed with ANY primacy on the issue. Passive voice for the win.
Gilrandir 1st Nov 2017, 3:09 PM edit delete reply
Something we have (indirectly) learned about Leo: Athena doesn't appear to have any other bodyguards.

I'd like to believe it means he is an extremely competent person in combat. Sadly (although that is undoubtedly true), in this story-verse, it probably also means he is cybered to levels approaching that of Marcus.

Athena's statement about 'heads of state' also typically applies to ex-heads-of-state. ^_^ And Leo appears unarmed.
Haegan2005 1st Nov 2017, 4:47 PM edit delete reply

This is a very good point.

However, I missed where Athena served as a head of state? Did she serve on the council in New Troy.

Gilrandir 1st Nov 2017, 6:25 PM edit delete reply
As far as I know (and I agree we may not have definitive canon evidence), Calliope is Athena's successor as Cent-Comm's Caretaker, and therefore would be regarded (at least by CentComm) as on a par with most heads of state. Or ex-head of state, as the case may be.
antrik 2nd Nov 2017, 6:58 PM edit delete reply
@Gilrandir while it hasn't been stated AFAIK what the role of "primary caretaker" actually implies, my understanding it is that it's about technical maintenance -- so not in Athena's line of work at all.

Of course Athena is still a liability, just like Lynn, because of her genes -- but since Lynn didn't seem get any special protection on that account, there is no reason to assume Athena would.

As for the political system of Troy, I don't think there has been any indication of the Taylors serving as head of state in any way. So far it looks like Cent-Comm is commander-in-chief, and most likely also head of government, but most likely not head of state. (That would be just weird...) All legislature seems to be with the council; and IIRC we haven't heard of any other government so far -- the executive appears to be governed pretty much just by Cent-Comm...

Unless there is some other government we simply haven't heard of yet, I would assume that the role of head of state is filled by whoever presides over the council, in lack of any other appropriate source.
megados 1st Nov 2017, 5:29 PM edit delete reply

I'm not so sure I can make that leap. By his looks, I'd say Leo is no slouch, and I'm sure he would protect Athena, but I don't think he's her bodyguard per se. Acantha is in a foreign city-state, and would and/or should have a bodyguard, but Athena is in one of the best secured areas of her own city-state, and is really not in need of a bodyguard. The only real way to tell, would be to see her entourage when travelling to a hostile city-state, as Acantha is doing now. Then a person could more easily determine that.
Sheela 2nd Nov 2017, 12:49 AM edit delete reply

I agree with Megados, Athena is on her hometurf, no need for a bodyguard here.

Mind you, Leo could be all sorts of badass, but he doesn't need to be.
In fact, we don't really know much about him, and what he does.
DLKmusic 2nd Nov 2017, 2:13 AM edit delete reply

@Sheela: we do know three things about Leo
1: He owns his own ranch on Mars, so he's independently successful.
2: He married Athena, so he's part of the Taylor clan now.
3: He's afraid of Dolly, so he as a good amount of self-preservation instinct.
Gilrandir 2nd Nov 2017, 6:52 AM edit delete reply
That's like saying the U.S. President doesn't need a Secret Service detail inside Cheyenne Mountain.

Ok. If you want to go that way. I lack the facts to say, one-way or another. But I suspect the Secret Service does not agree.
Sheela 2nd Nov 2017, 12:23 PM edit delete reply

To be fair, the President of New Troy is CentComm, and she don't need no bodyguard - She has combat drones!
Aetrun 2nd Nov 2017, 12:34 PM edit delete reply
As much as that seems to be the case, I would say Cent is more like a vice-president who has been given almost universal leeway to act. As the Taylors do apparently have some means of completely reigning her in and given their apparently extremely high social standing I would say they fill the president role slightly better. Secret service in this case would still be Cent's combat drones though (and her eyes and ears that are all over the place) so yes, Athena is definitely in the "Too well protected to need a specific bodyguard" area.
Ebonbolt 4th Nov 2017, 12:14 AM edit delete reply

They are in a secured area. It may be that Athena's security detail is right outside the door.
Timotheus 7th Nov 2017, 11:16 AM edit delete reply

Centcomm is a security detail and they are all inside of her (the doll is not Centcomm).
Don B. 2nd Nov 2017, 3:25 PM edit delete reply
Considering that I can remember only one short story involving Athena (when Dolly was hired by the Taylors)I can't say that I had any opinion on her other than having a good judge of character. Seeing her now, all I can say is that she is quite a lady and a great character in a comic that is filled with them. Even your villains have more going on than the tired, mustache twirling stereotype. I really hope we'll be seeing more of her in the future.
velvetsanity 2nd Nov 2017, 8:35 PM edit delete reply

In this comic, a character of the tired, mustache twirling stereotype variety would be purely for comic relief :D
Ebonbolt 3rd Nov 2017, 1:45 AM edit delete reply

Hey, don't be hatin' on Snidely…
DLKmusic 3rd Nov 2017, 5:17 PM edit delete reply

@Ebonbolt: I suppose we COULD get TeeDee to tie people to the railroad tracks, but it just wouldn't be the same!
Sheela 3rd Nov 2017, 9:35 PM edit delete reply

I dunno man, I think TeeDee would be up to using humans meatbags as railroad ties and having the tracks themselves be laid on their backsides.

I think she would be fine with that - Particularly the ones with twirly moustaches.
Ebonbolt 4th Nov 2017, 12:33 AM edit delete reply

Teedee wouldn't do it; her partner would get mad.
Decimus wouldn't do it; he'd order someone else (plus, he's dead).
The Gutter merc would do it, but she doesn't have a mustache, and wouldn't twirl it if she did.

(Also: No, @DLKmusic, I'm not changing my name to Ebonhart.)
DLKmusic 4th Nov 2017, 4:10 AM edit delete reply

@Ebonbolt: Crap... I did it again! :(
Centcomm 6th Nov 2017, 8:58 PM edit delete reply

Dari might tweak someone elses Nipples. :D
megados 7th Nov 2017, 5:45 AM edit delete reply

OK, I had to snicker at that. :D
KarToon12 2nd Nov 2017, 6:13 PM edit delete reply

Can we just put the grandma in charge of the world, please? XD
antrik 2nd Nov 2017, 7:01 PM edit delete reply
Eh, power corrupts ;-)
Sheela 3rd Nov 2017, 12:53 AM edit delete reply

Power, corrupts.
Absolute power, co.. eh, it's actually kinda nice. :)
Ebonbolt 3rd Nov 2017, 1:41 AM edit delete reply

Never give a dog absolute power; they'll use it to bury bones in the strangest places.
Deoxy 3rd Nov 2017, 7:51 AM edit delete reply
There's an old joke about the dyslexic insomniac atheist...

And there's all these weird dinosaur bones we find buried in the strangest places...
antrik 3rd Nov 2017, 5:53 PM edit delete reply
@Deoxy it's an *agnostic* insomniac dyslexic -- an atheist wouldn't be asking that question...
Ebonbolt 4th Nov 2017, 12:39 AM edit delete reply

@Deoxy: I'd always heard it as including "blind" & (as @antrik said) agnostic.

Please note, all: I said "Never give a dog absolute power"; if they earn it, how exactly do you intend to take it away?
antrik 3rd Nov 2017, 7:55 AM edit delete reply
You think that's the worst @Sheela would do?...
DLKmusic 3rd Nov 2017, 1:17 PM edit delete reply

"Bad human! put that steak down right now!"
"Bad Human! Feet off my furniture! NOW!!!"
"Bad Human! How many times do I have to tell you NOT to pee in my porcelain waterbowl! DO THAT OUTSIDE!"

Sheela with absolute power is a horrifying thought....
Centcomm 3rd Nov 2017, 9:21 PM edit delete reply

haha thats awwesome!
Sheela 3rd Nov 2017, 9:25 PM edit delete reply

Ha ha ha ha, LOL, you guys are awesome! :D

Like I *don't* have absolute power already ?
Too funny. :D

Edit :
*gasp* Centcomm, you're alive !! *hugs* :D
megados 4th Nov 2017, 5:07 AM edit delete reply

Wow! It's really @Centcomm! Good to see you!
Centcomm 4th Nov 2017, 6:04 AM edit delete reply

Yes yes im trying to get pages out. it seems that i need all new sets and characters for some reason..
Sheela 4th Nov 2017, 3:47 PM edit delete reply

And how is the health ?
Centcomm 5th Nov 2017, 12:49 PM edit delete reply

Health is ok.. money is tight. But most of the repairs are done. So the comp is good. And i go see my cardiologist on the 14th .. so yay! ( maybe )
DLKmusic 5th Nov 2017, 2:50 PM edit delete reply

@Centcomm: Glad to hear it. My thoughts and prayers are with you!
megados 4th Nov 2017, 4:40 PM edit delete reply

And don't be surprised people are glad to see ya.
Centcomm 5th Nov 2017, 10:26 PM edit delete reply

that makes me very happy :D
Lurker314 3rd Oct 2018, 8:51 PM edit delete reply
Sucked into the archive again. What is it about upper middle-aged women that makes them so FREAKING dangerous? This is like when a character in TMI was trying to look like the "scariest thing you can imagine".

This woman just steamrollers over everyone in the room and no one can even start to complain.

Brilliant, brilliant execution. Still laughing to tears.
