Ah, that beautiful senator is Octavia...

...she seems to use a slide show for her picture, though :)

...and yeah, better not cross Setorius... =P
Centcomm 28th Nov 2017, 11:51 PM edit delete reply

There are a few screens doing double or triple duty.
mjkj 29th Nov 2017, 4:01 AM edit delete reply
Ah, ok, thank you for that information =)
antrik 29th Nov 2017, 2:58 PM edit delete reply
@Centcomm that prompts an all-important question though: how is it decided who gets a screen of their own, and who has to share? ;-)
robnot 28th Nov 2017, 9:24 PM edit delete reply
that,, that he tried to kill his sister..
and the fact that we had invaders in the Palace.!
or that the Cassians were fighting the programing..
or how close the rebels were to winning...
yeah ,, lets not tell them everything ..

Aeneas is back !
megados 28th Nov 2017, 9:29 PM edit delete reply

Disassembly of Senator Pedius complete. :D

Meanwhile, Maxus wonders whether pulling teeth could really be this hard. >_<

I like how Setorius is written; he's somewhat cutting, and condescending, and seemingly never wrong. Can't help but like him. :)

Also, even though this is mostly a static room with some monitors, the different angles, and activity on the monitors gives a sense of "stuff happening".
Centcomm 28th Nov 2017, 11:53 PM edit delete reply

Yeah.. talking heads strips are both easy and hard. easy because not a lot of movement.. Hard to keep it visually interesting im glad i manage it!
Sheela 29th Nov 2017, 3:36 AM edit delete reply

When a man has 80 years of eidetic memory and cunning all crammed into his head, he has a tendency to become a little jaded, and all sorts of dangerous to his opponents.
chk 29th Nov 2017, 8:56 AM edit delete reply

eidetic' I had to look that one up Sheela. Kind of embarrassing that you know your second language better than I know my only language.
megados 29th Nov 2017, 9:24 AM edit delete reply

@Centcomm, yes you manage it well. :)

Yep, I looked up eidetic too. You learn something every day! Actually, I think that this is Rose's vocabulary shining here, as it also appears in the Alt Text.
antrik 29th Nov 2017, 3:41 PM edit delete reply
@Sheela I don't think he is just jaded... My impression is rather that he might be somewhat of a psychopath/sociopath/whatever you choose to call it: i.e. someone who doesn't experience pain and pleasure like normal people, and thus is neither motivated by them, nor able to feel empathy for these feelings in others... The problem with such people is that they will essentially stop at nothing to achieve whatever goals they set for themselves.

Setorious seems to have settled on advancing medicine and bio-technology as his primary goal; which can make him appear as a force for good in certain ways... But we should not forget that he is responsible -- either directly, or at least indirectly -- for experiments being performed on Dusty's and Katya's "sisters", which resulted in their demise. I can't help thinking of Josef Mengele here...
Sheela 30th Nov 2017, 2:50 AM edit delete reply

I wasn't speaking so much about wether he was good or bad, but rather that he was dangerous. :D

But yeah, you might be right.
Lurker 30th Nov 2017, 5:04 PM edit delete reply
I think you are spot on here. I would go a bit further. I think he is actually amused doing this. He is wasted bothering with politics at all, usually. He knows this, yet he was dining at the Prince's table. My money is that playing at politics is his diversion. And if he gets to watch idiots squirm under his gaze from time to time (think sun, magnifying glass, ants), that's a lot of fun!
megados 1st Dec 2017, 7:29 PM edit delete reply

Oh yes, I'm fairly certain he is having fun with this. So far, it seems as if he really only does it to self-important, and/or officious people, possibly those he feels are kind of useless. He's acting respectfully toward Maxus, for instance.
Lurker 30th Oct 2020, 12:50 AM edit delete reply
Just to be super-clear, I am NOT suggesting that Setorious devalues politics. He is fully aware what horror befall a failed state. I'm saying that toying with errant politicians is a sport for him.

Jeez, you guys are GOOD at people being, well... people.

Curious - I know that some strips have put together print compilations of their past chapters - is that something you'd consider/have considered doing?
Centcomm 28th Nov 2017, 11:50 PM edit delete reply

Id love to but its a LOOOT of work and cost. and i dont know what the demand is..
Evervigilant 29th Nov 2017, 2:18 AM edit delete reply
From what I have seen most who do print compilations, test demand and raise the funds by crowd sourcing. You could start a kick starter or which ever crowd sourcing you chose to use and if you reach your goals it's funded and you know the demand is there. If it doesn't you can see how close you are etc and go from there. Just a thought.
Sheela 29th Nov 2017, 3:37 AM edit delete reply

Well, they have a Patreon account you can throw money at them there. :)
robnot 29th Nov 2017, 8:32 AM edit delete reply
@Sheela: the "Patreon" account i wood say is more "support" .. i agree with Evervigilant a kickstarter wood give an idea how much interest in the book idea..
tho some of us wont be able to "buy" into it..
Cal 29th Nov 2017, 7:54 PM edit delete reply
Well, if you guys decide at some point to go for it, I'd be happy to help - I still do some printwork from time to time, and I know someone who runs their own small press/publishing house (that I've worked with in the past). I'd love to be able to offer my skills to the effort, since my cashflow isn't as permitting.

Pedius: This is an ad hominem attack on my-

Setorius: Most treasured member, which up until that point had done much of your decision-making for you?

Pedius: Whu- you...

Setorius: How is the little fellow? And while I ask because my records on this do not extend to the immediate present, I do use the term advisedly.

Pedius: *choke* *ragequit*

Setorius: It appears that Pedius and his ancillary member have decided to abstain from further discussion. Things may proceed marginally more smoothly now. Oh, I do beg the assembly's pardon for this digression.

Maxus: *can't help smiling on the inside*

Now, have we met Senator Octavia before, and will we be seeing any more of her? By which I mean, she would probably make a good vote bait pic. >:=3> (Of course, this being Datachasers, she might list kitten-drowning and virgin exsanguination among her favourite hobbies... in which case, she would make a good vote bait pic before this is revealed to the readers. >:=)
Tokyo Rose 29th Nov 2017, 3:22 PM edit delete reply

We haven't seen Octavia before, and since some of those pictures are taken from other sources, she probably won't look much like that if she's seen again/in person. :D
antrik 29th Nov 2017, 3:49 PM edit delete reply
That's a shame... The one in the picture would be very pleasant to look at :-)
robnot 29th Nov 2017, 6:24 PM edit delete reply
and ,, correct me if im wrong.! we will be seeing only 2 maybe 3 of these senators in the long run ( including Setorius ) ,, these are just NPC fillers.. at this rate we will have another Cici esk following of senators..

DLKmusic 30th Nov 2017, 12:38 AM edit delete reply

yay she needs love too!
velvetsanity 29th Nov 2017, 4:05 AM edit delete reply

It appears that Senator Octavia is either:
A) using an old picture of herself,
B) using a CG avatar,
C) far older than her appearance would indicate, or
D) Acantha's age or younger.

If it’s up for debate, I vote in favor of C :)
Ictuan 29th Nov 2017, 7:23 AM edit delete reply
E) Using pictures of those the "good" senator lusts after. The first and second avatar look like different people to me.

We really need the cast page updated to include the Senators so that there is a cheat sheet of who is who. This conference is getting confusing.
mjkj 29th Nov 2017, 9:34 AM edit delete reply

Well, CentComm pointed out, that the screens do double/triple duty *points up to comment*
Tokyo Rose 29th Nov 2017, 3:26 PM edit delete reply

The majority of the talking's been done by three senators (and, of course, Setorius), and I've tried to keep up on the use of names to clarify who's saying what. I probably should have encouraged Cent to keep the three "main" senators' images static, and just cycle the other screens, but we were having so many other problems just getting renders done--notice that we're still releasing only one page per week instead of three--that I didn't want to put the brakes on the art train.
Ictuan 30th Nov 2017, 6:26 PM edit delete reply

I'll just stick to my reading dialog and accepting that the character on the screen is who the writer says they are even if they were someone else yesterday. ;-)
megados 30th Nov 2017, 9:30 PM edit delete reply

@Tokyo Rose, I didn't realize there were still ongoing problems. I hope it's not serious. I thought that maybe you were building a buffer. If you can say, what is causing the trouble?

(I prefer you both being okay to page numbers)
Centcomm 2nd Dec 2017, 11:32 AM edit delete reply

i am getting a buffer finally.. its been a crazy few months and im sorry :(
megados 2nd Dec 2017, 11:54 AM edit delete reply

A buffer sounds good! Nice to hear you're getting ahead of it. :D

Crazy times happen! Let's hope for a reduction of crazy! You don't have anything to be sorry for. :)
DLKmusic 2nd Dec 2017, 10:42 PM edit delete reply

Awesome on the buffer, Cent, but like I said before, take care of yourself first and your strip second! we all know the score and are thrilled you are doing as much as you are already!

The good priest has been one of my favorites for a while. Also, "Pedius" sounds like a foot disease.
Speedy 29th Nov 2017, 12:29 PM edit delete reply
He's obviously a Pedius-phile, 'cause he's so full of himself, despite (or, because of) constantly putting his foot in his mouth.
Speedy 29th Nov 2017, 10:25 AM edit delete reply
The senator has trouble putting on a "glaze of nobility", now that he only puts out sprays of knob-end itty.
Siren 29th Nov 2017, 12:51 PM edit delete reply
With a name like Pedius, it was hard not to jump to the conclusion he was one of New Rome's less pleasant nobles - but my assumption is now backed by evidence.

I now picture Octavia's voice as Leiliana from Dragon Age. Such a pretty voice and wonderful character.
Centcomm 29th Nov 2017, 1:36 PM edit delete reply

That would not be a bad fit :D Liliana has a lovely voice.,. I loved her in Origins and she just got better each time!
Rashala 30th Nov 2017, 12:52 AM edit delete reply

Seriously thought these guys were a credible threat? Maxus yes, the rest of those political people seriously without maxus they'd still be arguing what color typeface to use to reply to your declaration of war and insulting each other when you'd already have conquered nova Roma and been holding it for a dang decade!!!
antrik 30th Nov 2017, 7:40 AM edit delete reply
My understanding is that the Senate doesn't have a say in matters of warfare, though? So the incompetence of this lot shouldn't really figure in the threat assessment of Roma...
Rashala 1st Dec 2017, 12:42 AM edit delete reply

The incident with the released the running amuck murderturd in one of third outposts does not instill much military confidence without max in the chair.

"Don't underestimate the danger of human stupidity"

Unfortunately, avoiding that is probably impossible.

"...or it's abundance!"

That is DEFINITELY impossible. No estimate is large enough, including infinity.
StellarJay 2nd Dec 2017, 12:06 AM edit delete reply

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I am not sure about the universe, but that may just be me being stupid." -- Albert Einstein.
antrik 2nd Dec 2017, 7:34 AM edit delete reply
First time I see that last part added to the "quotation" -- and quite frankly, IMHO it takes away rather than adds to its effect.

(Of course that's rather arbitrary anyway, since it's not clear what Einstein said exactly -- or in fact whether he ever said anything along these lines at all...)

nooo THAT Octavia is a totally different person.
Cyndr 2nd Dec 2017, 7:38 PM edit delete reply
Thanks. It sorta felt that if Decimus's mother were alive she might occupy a political position and do something underhanded like leak sensitive details about his death...
