oooooh, Data Chasers-I was just thinking about this....yah!
Sheela 25th Apr 2018, 4:43 AM edit delete reply

Not only are you thinking about it, but you're visiting it - Even better.

I dunno how long it has been since your last visit, but about the first 100 pages were revamped some time ago, so lots of new stuff to go through. :)
megados 24th Apr 2018, 9:17 PM edit delete reply

Ophelia, get thee to a mirror! No, really! It's fiiiiiiine! It's sterilized! XD

She's really got nothing to complain about, considering, but I suspect it wouldn't have been her first choice. Beggars can't be choosy, I guess.

Thanks Cent, and Rose! Page made my day!
Sheela 25th Apr 2018, 4:42 AM edit delete reply

She got nothing to complain about, true, though the other Cassians may tease her a bit about it. :D

They are not above a bit of dark humor.
megados 25th Apr 2018, 7:32 AM edit delete reply

Too bad Malati isn't here to see this. :(
Sheela 25th Apr 2018, 8:56 AM edit delete reply

She would have had a field day with it, that's for sure. :)
DLKmusic 25th Apr 2018, 12:11 PM edit delete reply

she would have tried to figure out how to re-activate the Ero-Waifo protocols!
Sheela 25th Apr 2018, 6:13 PM edit delete reply

That's the sort of thing Tokyo Rose would do.

... I wonder if she ever tried to start up Centcomm's sex doll routines - Y'know, as a prank on Centcomm ? :)
megados 25th Apr 2018, 7:57 PM edit delete reply

To do it properly, and for best effect, all CentComm's dolls should be activated simultaneously. Tokyo Rose fits this ability requirement, and job description. :D
kraznor 26th Apr 2018, 4:38 AM edit delete reply
I expect the Cassians will give her a T-shirt with "Death by Snu-Shu" on it
Sheela 26th Apr 2018, 12:12 PM edit delete reply

And just imagine how *proud* of herself Tokyo Rose would be?
I assume it's just the sort of thing that warms the cockles of your heart, when you're a mutant / machine hybrid in a deep freezer!

... cockles ! :D

Considering the measurements of her previous chassis, and the current one, Ophelia can probably be forgiven for taking a moment or two to contemplate the center of gravity of the current situation.
Sheela 25th Apr 2018, 4:38 AM edit delete reply

Well, at least they are not ridiculously huge, they are still a manageable size.

Like, she can still walk through a door normally.
She won't have to go through it, one boob at a time.

Sheela 26th Apr 2018, 12:20 PM edit delete reply

I dunno, I rather liked her original look, though her clothes were somewhat slutterific.

Probably a good thing that she is no longer sporting ridiculous cleavage clothes any more. With her new cup size, it would all be a bit much. >_<
Gilrandir 24th Apr 2018, 9:35 PM edit delete reply
Why is Ophelia using what seems to be a New Troy classification to describe her chassis, when we have been told that Nova Roma does not usually use their nomenclature system?
megados 24th Apr 2018, 9:56 PM edit delete reply

It was explained that New Rome more or less uses what's available. Their androids don't necessarily comply with NTAS, but they're not precluded from compliance. This is likely an NTAS compliant body that Ivy and Jordan acquired. That's what I think is happening, anyway.
Gilrandir 25th Apr 2018, 12:18 AM edit delete reply
I think you misunderstand my query, @megados. I understand that Nova Roma androids may well be housed in New Troy chassis. The point is classification taxonomies. A New Troy cyberbiologist, if asked to describe a chassis in casual conversation would be likely (IMHO) to use their 'standard nomenclature' of {number}{letter} -- unless they chose to identify it with a specific make and model instead.

If Nova Roma has an equivalently powerful, but different, taxonomy for describing chassis in abstract generalized terms (for example {color}{animal}), then I would expect Ophelia to use the vocabulary with which she is (ostensibly) most familiar. So something like "... seems to be a decent Purple Cat", rather than "... seems to be a decent 3F". But she used the New Troy taxonomy instead, and I was curious about whether that was significant in some way.
Romfire 25th Apr 2018, 2:20 AM edit delete reply
I would think the Cassians would know all there is to know about all android models and styles. As a tactical advantage in battle. She also knows she is talking with people who would use and be familiar with that nomenclature.
Sheela 25th Apr 2018, 4:49 AM edit delete reply

Since she is in a NT body, it would be natural to use the NT classification, as "Purple Cat" may not describe the chassis completely.

Kinda like how we describe cars, you wouldn't call a pickup truck for a hatchback. They may both have an engine, seat and a steering wheel, but apart from those shared commonalities, they are really quite different.

So a NT 3F body may differ on many points from a "Purple Cat" chassis, better to use the 3F classification, and be precise about what you're talking about.
Gilrandir 25th Apr 2018, 9:11 AM edit delete reply
I don't agree, @Sheela, but I do see your point. As a parallel, let's assume (for the sake of argument) that New Troy uses Imperial units of measurement, while Nova Roma is metric. You hand Ophelia a rod of steel prominently stamped with a New Troy foundry marking on it and ask her to describe it. Would she be more likely to say "It is about two inches in diameter," because those are the units commonplace in the country of its manufacture? Or would she be more likely to say, "It is about five centimetres in diamater," because those are the units with which she is most comfortable and familiar?

And this is even taking into account the assumption that she knows perfectly well exactly what an "inch" is, and the fact that (since it was manufactured in New Troy) it is probably exactly two inches in diameter (allowing for manufacturing tolerances), but only approximately five centimetres in diameter.

The best reason I can think of for her to be using inches instead of centimetres is if, for some reason, she thinks her audience will better understand the New Troy terminology, but not the Nova Roma terminology. But we have seen no other hints (that I noticed) to suggest that.
Sheela 25th Apr 2018, 9:40 AM edit delete reply

So .. you wouldn't call a spade a spade, and a shovel a shovel ?
You would interchange the two, even though they are clearly different ?

Language be damned, but that is messed up.
Gilrandir 25th Apr 2018, 3:35 PM edit delete reply
And how is "five centimetres" a 'spade', but "two inches" a 'shovel'? I'd say you're just digging yourself in deeper. ^_^ I guess I might as well throw in the trowel.
Sheela 25th Apr 2018, 3:51 PM edit delete reply

He he he he, oh I've been digging allright.

*shoves a Purple Cat into a hole in the backyard*
antrik 26th Apr 2018, 8:43 AM edit delete reply
@Gilrandir comparing to units of measure does not help, since these can by nature be applied the same to any object, no matter the origin. That's not generally true for standards.

Which leads us to the second point: you are talking about classifications, which is beside the point: "model 3" or "model 4" are not like say truck classification by gross weight, which can be applied to any truck, including foreign ones. Rather, these are concrete base specifications to which Troy Androids are built. If an Android is not built to Troy's "model 3" or "model 4" specification, then it is not a "model 3" or "model 4", period. Conversely, an Android built to Troy's "model 3" specification is an "NTAS model 3", no matter whether it's in Troy, Roma, or Shinedo. Trying to apply let's say Shinedo standards to an Troy-built Android would make no sense, since it simply doesn't meet any Shinedo standards... Assuming Shinedo actually has their own standards. (Which seems likely.)

And that leads us to the last point: you are assuming that Roma actually has their own standards, which is most likely not the case. When Noctis said that they don't follow Troy standards, she simply meant that the (few) Androids in Roma come from all kinds of places, including those that use different standards.
Gilrandir 26th Apr 2018, 12:15 PM edit delete reply
@antrik, what is your rationale for concluding that New Troy models are specifications (or standards, if you will), rather than classifications? I can certainly understand that, if you make that assumption, your point has merit. It just seems to me that, prior to this, the terms have been used descriptively in the abstract, rather than as referring to a limited subset of implementations.
megados 25th Apr 2018, 6:19 AM edit delete reply

You are right, @Gilrandir, I did misunderstand. The question is why Ophelia is using NT nomenclature. I'm guessing that the NT standard is very pervasive. The MACCS would have to be part of NT standard, so interchangeability requirements are met. She is autodetecting systems, and they have to respond with information as to how they're accessed. From that information, she could easily determine what systems her body has.

For instance, when you plug in your new printer into the USB port, the computer reads it's response to query, and it comes up with a dialog box telling you that you have connected a so-and-so printer, and asks what you want to do with it, even if the printer wasn't made by your computer's manufacturer. If you go into device properties, you can look at the type of mouse you have, etc. I would assume that the MACCS would have more sophistication than that, so I'm not surprised that she knows exactly what hardware she has.

Also, I have to agree with Romfire, in that they probably have a lot of intel on what NT is doing.

About all she doesn't know at this point, would be what she looks like.
Ebonbolt 25th Apr 2018, 3:52 PM edit delete reply

I would guess that she's describing a specific set of specifications, which apply to a NT model (which we are, I think, assuming this is), but not necessarily to the equivalent (if there even is one) NR model. She's using a term that has a specific level of precision, one that doesn't say more or less than she means, nor imply things that she doesn't intend.
HiFranc 25th Apr 2018, 2:58 PM edit delete reply

Given how Noctis reacted, New Rome are interested in New Troy models:
Morituri 26th Apr 2018, 8:59 PM edit delete reply
For the same reason people don't confuse "Mustang" and "Corvette," even if they're both just names for American two-door street-legal consumer sports cars?

No matter how similar the products are, they're not interchangeable; there are differences, and to people who care about American two-door street-legal consumer sports cars, calling one by the name of the other would just make you sound stupid.

If it's a New Troy 3F model, it's a New Troy 3F model. There might be a chassis with similar specs and/or appearance etc that's made on Luna or at Shinedo, or possibly even at Nova Roma or whatever, but those would each be their own thing - parts not interchangeable, maintenance details different, wiring harness with different topology, etc... and calling any of them a "3F" would be just plain inaccurate.

On the other hand, Ophelia's brain inside this 3F model, unless at least *some* of the underlying structure is consistent, is sort of like the motor from a military HMMWMV shoehorned into somebody's Cadillac at this point - we expect that there are some custom bits holding things together, and that it has capabilities not found in the original.
Kitch 1st May 2018, 6:00 AM edit delete reply
Simple Answer:

Most tech this advanced has chips in it with identifiers, and an Android Chassis, absolutely would have identifiers on the chips, and it'd likely be the default that a resident would use to identify.

(It could be modified, so if a NR Tech got in there, they could customize, and change that classification, but currently it's a 3F NT model.)
Haegan2005 24th Apr 2018, 10:46 PM edit delete reply

Sterilized. The implication here is that it needed to be sterilized. '

Sheela 25th Apr 2018, 4:55 AM edit delete reply

The fact that they sterilized it, isn't proof that it needed it, though it heavily suggests it - Like a hint with a two by four.

As for the "ewh" part, I dunno man - We know that Ada has a sexual relationship going on, and nobody is going "ewh" about her - Why the double standard ?
megados 25th Apr 2018, 6:34 AM edit delete reply

I don't think it's so much 'ewh' for having sex, as it is 'ewh' for she/we don't know where it's been. :D
Thomas 25th Apr 2018, 7:31 AM edit delete reply
Well that's why they sterilized it. Not because they had to but because they didn't know they didn't. XD
Guest 25th Apr 2018, 1:08 PM edit delete reply
Think of it this way: It's the same way people like making out with their significant other, but would be disgusted if some random person spit in their food or drink.

Ada chose to be in an intimate relationship, and has a full recollection of what she's chosen to do with her body and with whom.

None of that applies to Ophelia, or even the previous occupant of her chassis ("Ero-Waifu Sim" does not sound like the standard, free-willed android programming).
HiFranc 25th Apr 2018, 2:41 PM edit delete reply

I think that there is a difference. Ada is on a committed relationship whereas that body was made in the expectation that whoever occupied it would have to have sex with fans of the show. It even has a program to so that the occupant can do erotic stuff in character.

To use references from our times, it’s like being permanently stuck playing Seven of Nine, Counsellor Troi, Mystique, Lara Croft, etc and spending your life fulfilling the erotic fantasies of fans.
Sheela 25th Apr 2018, 3:53 PM edit delete reply

You mean like the difference between your girlfriend and a prostitute?
HiFranc 25th Apr 2018, 11:35 PM edit delete reply

Similar but the person in that body lives as the character.
Haegan2005 25th Apr 2018, 10:36 PM edit delete reply

The way I see it is like leaving a used condom laying around. The least they could have done is cleaned it before selling the body.
Sheela 26th Apr 2018, 12:23 PM edit delete reply

They probably did, but female sensibilities as they are, will clean it again.
Maybe even a few times more, just to be real certain.

It's a thing most men won't understand, but there has to be a certain level of .. neatness.
Morituri 26th Apr 2018, 9:27 PM edit delete reply
I would be surprised, actually, if very many men actually don't get that. "A certain level of neatness" is a pretty fundamental need - it reflects control, dignity, and the basic perception of safety and being respected.

Hint; For anyone who *doesn't* get this already, here's a free tip. If you aren't clean or your place isn't clean, you fail at sexual desirability. Sometimes this is true if your would-be partners are men, but it's almost a bedrock requirement if they are women.

Anyway... Ophelia wants to feel like she's in control of this body? Wants to inhabit it? Wants to feel a level of comfort with it? Wants to wear it with dignity and feel like she deserves respect? Cleaned and sterilized of any evidence of sexual intimacy that she doesn't remember will be a pretty fundamental requirement.
Sheela 27th Apr 2018, 11:14 AM edit delete reply

Curiously, only about 60% of all males born actually get to procreate, compared to about 85% for the women.
Morituri 1st May 2018, 11:49 AM edit delete reply
Hmmm. Double the odds of dying without progeny would tend to indicate that there is something important that more men than women don't get.

OTOH, this is our evolutionary pattern. Males are expendable in defense of the tribe, because given a population that's at least 25% male, the reproductive ability of a tribe is dependent on the number of females. We aren't eusocial by any means, but we are very very social, and the success of the group is often more important than the success of an individual male (who, after all, probably has relatives in the group who can continue to pass along his genes).

And, we can't really apply Bayes' law to the cleanliness thing because there are so many other dependent variables - like actually having autonomous control of a body that contains the main reproductive plumbing, for starters.
Sheela 1st May 2018, 12:49 PM edit delete reply

Male disposability is definitely a big part of it.
But females also trend towards hypergamy, though it has fallen.
Still, a study on OKCupid found that their female users rated 80% of all the men on OKCupid as less than average attractive ... ouch.

So if the women are aiming to marry the top 20% of men, well, where does that leave the rest of the men ?
Particularly the low status men.

Of course, not being able to attract a life mate is a big trauma, and will often lead to other deficiencies, which in turn can be seen in statistics for homeless people and suicides, both are overwhelmingly male dominated.

As you said, this is probably a form of evolutionary pattern.
But it still have some serious implications.
megados 1st May 2018, 2:25 PM edit delete reply

"So if the women are aiming to marry the top 20% of men, well, where does that leave the rest of the men ?

They are becoming a 'new' demographic: the incels, or involuntary celibates. Its a thing.
Siren 3rd May 2018, 2:16 AM edit delete reply
Don't worry, just because they find 80% of male OkCupid users less attractive than average, doesn't mean ALL women find 80% of ALL men unattractive. That survey sounds specific to that site, and so can only truly be assumed to apply to that site.

Your wife? Depends on what she's into, whether you attempt to evade her notice or deceive her about it (unsuccessfully, lest that require clarification), and whether she's given the opportunity to participate.

It would be definitely bad form in some relationships. And worth a bunch of teasing in most others.

I would suggest that you can safely google "rule 34" and "waifu" and view this as combination of the two topics. You can view ero as referring to the specialties of the Greek God Eros. I did google the name of the program, and I hope that I will be able to get the images out of my mind. Now looking for brain bleach.

I'm supposing the "Ero-Waifu Sim" is the "factory setting" for the brain of the 'companion' model it comes with. It would likely be a bot or 'pre-spark' program like what CeCi was intended to pretend to be.

But in this case the fully sparked "Ophelia sim" got loaded instead.

So is the "Ero-Waifu Sim" a persona that could be eventually sparked, a functioning person in its own right? Or is it a static system that doesn't do any long-term learning and changing as it interacts with its environment?

The legalities *ought* to be very different, depending on which. IMO. But somehow I don't think they are, out on the badlands.
antrik 27th Apr 2018, 3:41 AM edit delete reply
I think it's more like a sub-routine, that can be loaded by any Android brain, rather than a distinct personality.

Having said that, I *do* find it somewhat surprising that it seems to be an inherent part of the body, which survives a brain transplant.

I guess it's kinda like a device driver coming with the hardware, so anyone attached to it can use it in the "proper" manner... ;-)
megados 27th Apr 2018, 3:36 PM edit delete reply

That seems likely, @antrik. Contained in the body, it might be some sort of future SSD, or other NVM unit (micro Q drive?) that carries software modules specific to a particular body. It might be software such as behavior modifiers, and hardware drivers specific to the body in question, which load at initialization. That would also explain the 98.7% compliance figure. It's possible that Ophelia likely has software modules for features she no longer has, such as the hidden blades that many of the Cassians have or other features. Also there appears to be some 'hardware' that they stopped the module load for, so it's left without the corresponding software. Left as it is, it's just a bit of a mismatch is all: the software doesn't quite match the hardware. ;)

The tech page stops at 3E so I am assuming the 3F is even closer to human. I would think she has a much more complete tactile sensory package in this body. She could think of this situation as kind of a vacation from her usual self and live "Life" a little. All work and no play makes Ophelia a dull girl. Plus if I remember correctly, the 3 series is not bad in combat situations. Wasn't Dolly an upgraded 3?
Mark_L_A 25th Apr 2018, 5:30 PM edit delete reply

IIRC, Dolly's original chassis was a HIGHLY Modified 2 Series with Calliope making many upgrades and enhancements.
Sheela 25th Apr 2018, 6:44 PM edit delete reply

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned what classification Dolly's old Meta-Zeo body was. Though it is shown on the tech page as a 2-E.

Her new body is not yet classified, but will probably be considered a class 5.
antrik 26th Apr 2018, 3:54 AM edit delete reply
@Sheela yeah, originally it was a model 2 -- though in new canon, she actually has been upgraded to a model 3 at some point... (Per a God comment, as an explanation for the different look in the rebooted pages.)

Marcus Ramesy 26th Apr 2018, 11:01 AM edit delete reply

TeeDee is a 3, .. model 4 is the ones that have all the fleshy bits... where the model 3's are more metal with some form of dermal covering for those that want it.. in particular this model 3 would have a realistic feeling skin like polymer and since it was a companion.. it may.. or may not have genitals ... just depends on how much was invested in the body... most of your pleasure models will range from a model 3 to model 4 depending on how much money one spends.. obviously the model 4 body has the full suite where model 3 only does if some one puts them in. (TeeDee being a model 3 does not have genitals and would break the arm of any one who suggested otherwise )

Morituri 26th Apr 2018, 11:34 AM edit delete reply
Market demographics is weird.

90% plus of the sex toy market is female. 90% plus of the market for sex workers of either gender is male. Pornography seems about evenly split, given different kinds; Bodice-ripper novels with explicit sex scenes every six pages are written for a female audience, and video smut with the same fraction of explicit sex scenes acted, are made for men.

And, while the market for prostitutes is mainly male regardless of the gender of the prostitutes, there seems to be a demand for at least 9 times as many female as male prostitutes.

(All these numbers are wild guesses based on what I think I see out there; polling, scientific studies, etc, are not implied.)

It's hard to anticipate how all of that translates into the storyline-current situation. With the population mostly female, the culture will be changed. It's not clear how much of the current pattern is due to dynamics that should be expected to endure, and how much is just plain current-century craziness.

And, ultimately, it's hard to know whether to classify the product as a "prostitute" (and therefore 90% likely to be for men, regardless of gender) or as a "sex toy" (and therefore 90% likely to be for women).
Sheela 26th Apr 2018, 12:49 PM edit delete reply

Women tend to go more for "emotional porn" as I call it.
Think Soap Operas and erotic dramas, that kind of thing.

Men are usually more visually pleased, porn videos, ero-manga, pin-up magazines and so on.

A curious detail, is that she woke up with eyes at full bright.
Back when Ada woke up from her reload, it took a while for her eyes to reach full brightness.
Of course, ada was gosh darn adorable, and she got to hug both TeeDee and the soup - So we let it slide. :)

On a sidenote, seems like Datachasers Rank likes to hover in around Rank 10, that's pretty solid. :)
Though I noticed that the banner they display on top webcomic list is pretty fuzzy, maybe they are using a low resolution one ?
antrik 26th Apr 2018, 7:18 PM edit delete reply
Yes, TWC increased the banner size some two or three years ago, but Datachasers never got a new one, so it's still the smaller old banner scaled up. I "complained" about it before...
Centcomm 27th Apr 2018, 5:06 PM edit delete reply

yeah - it takes forever to get a banner approved. thats another reason some of the others haven't changed ether
antrik 27th Apr 2018, 9:50 PM edit delete reply
Isn't it worth it, though? I mean, what's the point in a high ranking, when people seeing it get put off by a bad looking banner?...
Just_IDD 28th Apr 2018, 8:30 AM edit delete reply
The size of the banner doesn't do a thing for me. When I'm looking at TWC I'm looking at the content of the story.

On the placement of the comic in the voting. Right now the comic updates once a week. I would wager that most people only vote when they visit the comic. If you look at it differently, Data Chasers probably places near first for Comics that only update once a week.

I'm not implying that DC needs to update more. You gals are doing your thing on your own time.

The things I look at are story, are you updating when you say and are you consistent.

I read several Comics that are much further down on the list which have a good story, but over time the author has had other things come up. Updates are not as frequent and not on a regular schedule. I still vote for those when I go to the comic.

If the creators of this comic care about voting position, which I think is not really a big concern, then they should put the vote button at the bottom of the comic. This way as you're reading it the natural progression that is to vote for it since that link will take you someplace else. The other aspect is that I read on a small screen namely my phone so sidebars are something I generally ignore.

@Sheela, ADA was getting a brand new body. This body has been around for a little while. Back when this body was first new it probably also had cloudy eyes at first.

Hey ,It could have been worse it could have been a Sparkling Bishi Bot. I imagine the sparkles would get annoying after a few seconds.

...Your aluminum finish, slightly diminished
Is the best I ever have seen..

for the younguns who might not have heard the ancient predictions of things such as these ;)

Her neon mouth with a bleeding talk smile
Is nothing but electric sign
You could say she has an individual style
She's a part of a colorful time

Super-sealed lady, chrome-color clothes
You wear 'cause you have no other
But I suppose no one knows
You're my plastic fantastic lover

Your rattlin' cough never shuts off
Is nothing but a used machine
Your aluminum finish, slightly diminished
Is the best I've ever seen

Cosmetic baby, plug into me
And never, ever find another
And I realize no one's wise
To my plastic fantastic lover

The electrical dust is starting to rust
Her trapezoid thermometer taste
All the red tape is mechanical rape
Of the TV program waste

Data control and I.B.M.
Science is mankind's brother
But all I see is draining me
On my plastic fantastic lover

Whoa ... yeah, that is old now.
I don't think Jefferson Airplane music has aged very gracefully.
But the lyrics are on point.

We used to listen to 'em back in the day; they were all right for the time, but when they tried to update and remake and went Starship, it didn't seem to really work. Things seemed to unravel.

But yeah, good choice for it. Rock on.

huh, and I remember when it was the latest thing in a brand new era of 'psychadelic' music :( or should that be 'psychodelic' for today ?

I wonder what Princess Acantha would say about the looks of her Cassian? Would she approve? Did she like the show? Dolly said 3s were tough in a fight, is there any real reason other than cosmetic to get her a new (old) body?
Sheela 1st May 2018, 2:01 AM edit delete reply

Well, it seems to me that most Cassian bodies are tailored towards their specific abilities. Also, they probably have military spec power plants and subdermal armor. Plus whatever hidden weaponry they might have.
So yes, there would be reason to upgrade her body, though her current bod could support a pair of seriously powerful SLT's !! XD

As for Acantha, I think she would be delighted, and possibly a little disturbed.
But ultimately, she seems to be quite inclusive minded, and would probably accept it for what it is.
antrik 1st May 2018, 11:27 AM edit delete reply
I don't see anything in the way Ophelia blew up hinting at subdermal armour?...

I do agree though that the pretty doll body is surely not up to Cassian standards in fighting ability...
megados 1st May 2018, 12:41 PM edit delete reply

Upper body frame plating seems pretty decent, but I agree, the lower torso could have benefitted from some of that. I mean look, most of it survived a tank blowing up in her face! That kinda says decent combat frame to me. It would do pretty well in melee.
Sheela 1st May 2018, 12:55 PM edit delete reply

Yeah, considering that the APC/tank behind her did NOT survive, I'd say that her body armor was pretty good. :D
