Something tells me that she’s warming to her rescuers - or one at least.

@alt text: yeah, true, but she has no combat frame underneath, like ... *sighs*

In the real world we're not quite there yet, but we're getting closer: The Japanese android HRP-4C cosplaying GUMI

I love the "Sulking" part. It got me wondering, how much does the body feedback effect the mood and personality of the android? I mean, there she is acting like a sulking teenager.
Sheela 4th Jul 2018, 7:40 AM edit delete reply

Now THAT is an excellent question ! :D

Remember how much it changed Dolly when she got transferred ?
I suspect all bodies have their quirks, and the more advanced the neural nets are, the bigger the impact upon the personality, I suspect.

On the other hand, Ophelia is a veteran, and is more set in her ways than, say, an android intelligence that came straight out of a zero body.

I also suspect she has tried changing body before, which may prepare her for the changes.

But still … she now has to content with being … "adorable" !! :D
She might even receive hugs !
Oh, the horror!
HiFranc 4th Jul 2018, 2:09 PM edit delete reply

My understanding is that the more advanced the body, the more stimulation there is for the emotional side of the brain. Maybe there’s even the more room for that part of the neural net to expand into.

Dolly’s emotions were all in line with *her* feelings about them. She felt emotions in her previous body but she was unprepared for how strong her emotional response was and how nuanced and contradictory they were.

I think that the best way I could think to understand it was that beforehand she felt in 2D and then the new body gave her a 3D emotional space to use.
megados 4th Jul 2018, 4:47 PM edit delete reply

My understanding of it was similar, except that rather than an increase in level of sensation of stimulation, it is more of an increase of refinement and detail.
Lurker314 4th Jul 2018, 1:15 PM edit delete reply
I'm thinking that her response to the "sulking" comment was playfully sarcastic. That response is too far outside of what she has been saying up to this point.

I wish that I could upvote this.
Sheela 5th Jul 2018, 3:20 AM edit delete reply

Oh .. OH !! *bounces excitedly* What HiFranc said about emotions up there !! Feelie's 3D feelings !! I was trying to say that too! Dammit HiFranc, stop stealing my thoughts ! >_<

She was caught red handed showing feelings, showing feelings of an almost human nature! This will not do!!!
megados 4th Jul 2018, 4:47 AM edit delete reply

If the Cassians offer you safe passage, that's pretty solid.

The comm does handle wideband audio after all! Just have to do things in the proper order, I guess. :D

Now that things are starting to get better, maybe Feelie will feel less frustrated. (Even though she can't get the 3 stooges fired) :D

I like to think they're mostly faking. I'm probably wrong, but I still like to think that.

You know how you can't outsmart a bureaucracy? How they're carefully designed to absolutely fail to reward any kind of intelligent behavior?

And, in a lot of ways, how businesses where the public-facing employees have absolutely no power are the same way?

Well, when facing something like that, why bother to act intelligent? Many people don't. And, in fact, some people, on discovering that they can't outsmart such an entity, take the opposite tack. It turns out that, once in a while, if you can be obstinate and uncomprehending enough, you can actually get useful results by outdumbing them.

Some people work really hard at deliberately trying to outstupid the organizations, to the point where they get what they want just because someone needs to get rid of them.

Of course, the existence of this sometimes-useful strategem, probably discovered accidentally by real stupid people or people who just despaired of results by applying intelligence and got lazy, means that the retail employee now has to deal with people who actually work at it.
DLKmusic 11th Jul 2018, 2:26 PM edit delete reply

@Morituri: seeing as how I'm a tech support supervisor, and am on the other side of the equation...

I wrote this song based on actual calls, either taken by me, or were told by a friend when we were swapping horror stories.

I pick up the telephone, and this lady she starts a'swearin'
she spilled some motor oil all over that dress she's a'wearin'
I try to calm her down some, but her tone turns colder than ice
when I ask what this has to do with her laser pointing device

I do phone support, 24/7 support line. Yeah
all operators are busy now, please stand by, you are next in line.

This guy who's hoppin mad, calls in the dead of night
He was in a chatroom, and he got into a fight.
I understand why you're mad, sir and I really don't blame you at all,
but our chatroom aint responsible for the hole you punched in your wall

I do phone support, 24/7 support line. Yeah
all operators are busy now, please stand by, you are next in line.

So you got a megawatt stereo and when your music is playin'
the bass always rattles the windows, and the neighbors won't stop complainin'
you want to play your music loud and your neighbors to like you again
so buy a pair of headphones and plug the damned things in

So you want to contest these charges, to your visa credit card
but based on your written statement, this is gonna be pretty hard
you didn't get what you paid for at O'Malley's Bar & Grill
cause you bought a round of drinks for the house and everyone hates you still

I do phone support, 24/7 support line. Yeah
all operators are busy now, please stand by, you are next in line..

Good screeners who can weed out the comedians, pranksters and stupider people would be a nice thing for any leadership to have. It would certainly help prevent one's head of government from being trolled into saying something they shouldn't to someone who isn't who they think they are.

Ophelia's current chassis is cute - yes. But no one can replace CeCi <sob>
Ictuan 4th Jul 2018, 6:44 PM edit delete reply
Ya,CeCi was a great loss. Seems like every time Rose and Cent creates an android that becomes too much of a fan favorite, they meet a horrible demise.
KarToon12 4th Jul 2018, 4:30 PM edit delete reply

If those two knuckleheads were the ones accepted, I don't wanna' know how stupid the rejects were!
jamie59 4th Jul 2018, 6:39 PM edit delete reply

She could always go see them after she is in her backup body & show them some of it's special features.
megados 4th Jul 2018, 9:04 PM edit delete reply

The alt text is thought provoking. As Ophelia is officially now a cute li'l deathbot, she might pause for a second, and make an updated assessment. With a few mods and augmentations, this body could prove useful. It could cause people to consistently underestimate her. That could prove an advantage at times. Right now, she's frustrated, but given time, she might see it differently.
Morituri 5th Jul 2018, 9:51 AM edit delete reply
Ye gods, it would take replacing EVERYTHING. Starting with the standard-issue frame that's neither mechanically strong enough to support the strength a Cassian must have, nor provides anyplace to mount the type of synthetic muscle she'd need to provide that strength.

Moving on, this model would have to be made out of severely different materials to withstand the fire the last one took, without getting vaporized - I mean, seriously, take a chunk of heavy armor and find something that hurts it that bad, then imagine something with the toughness of a barely postadolescent child and see how it fares.

All told, it would be like Project Binky, but with an android body. It would be very very cool for those who are seriously into android bodies, but Ophelia doesn't have time to treat that as a hobby.
megados 5th Jul 2018, 12:34 PM edit delete reply

Yeah. In actual implementation it might not be practical, and would take some doing, if she is to have a combat frame again, but that wasn't really the point. It was more about what advantages she gains while in this body. Not as a hobby, but as a different sort of operative.

Not all Cassian bodies are the same. It has been said, for instance, that Noctis does not have a combat frame, but does have some combat mods and other augmentations. That gives her a great speed and agility boon. Ophelia had what looked to be a full combat frame.

Anyway, it was just an idle thought. :D
Sheela 5th Jul 2018, 5:12 PM edit delete reply

Project Binky, huh ?
*googles it*
Uh-huh … ok … right … NICE!
I gotta admit, that is pretty neat.
Centcomm 5th Jul 2018, 10:00 PM edit delete reply

Noctis does have a combat frame ( She her cast entry ) Ofelia also had a combat frame.
megados 6th Jul 2018, 4:47 AM edit delete reply

Oh! Somehow, I got that mixed up. I thought that I read somewhere that she didn't. Thanks, Centcomm! (Apparently I don't have the knack for detail that Noctis does.) :D
Sheela 6th Jul 2018, 3:57 PM edit delete reply

Is Tennyo in a combat frame though ?
megados 6th Jul 2018, 6:25 PM edit delete reply

At the risk of being wrong again, I would guess it's likely yes. :D

A Comm specialist would want to be "very hard to incapacitate", as Noctis would say. (That should have been a dead giveaway to me on my earlier statement) (>_<)
Tokyo Rose 10th Jul 2018, 10:37 PM edit delete reply

Tennyo does indeed have a combat frame; all of the Cassians do. She lacks some of the mods that make the others such nightmares in a fight, since something had to be sacrificed to pack her to the eyeballs with comm mods, but even without them, she's faster, stronger, and tougher than any unaugmented human. (As Adventus Albinus discovered, however briefly.)
megados 11th Jul 2018, 5:23 AM edit delete reply

I didn't know, (or didn't remember) that all Cassians had them. Thanks, @Tokyo Rose!
Sheela 11th Jul 2018, 3:07 PM edit delete reply

Thank you for the clarification, Rose. :)
Romfire 11th Jul 2018, 6:26 PM edit delete reply
I know combat frames are awesome, but how good is a regular android body? How would Ophilia's current body do in combat? She has a boat load of skills, I would bet she could out fight any non-augmented human.
megados 18th Jul 2018, 7:27 AM edit delete reply

The impression I get, is that the standard android frame would fare better in combat than most humans, but Cassians have to be able to do better than that in many instances. In the instance you mention, yes, I think Ophelia could best most unaugmented 'squishy' humans with her current body.
Romfire 4th Jul 2018, 10:47 PM edit delete reply
I wonder how long the writers can find reasons to postpone Ophelia getting transferred into her backup body. A good long time I hope this stuff is comic gold.
Rashala 5th Jul 2018, 12:55 AM edit delete reply

I think Ophelia is gonna re assign those two temporarily to waste cleaning without suits just to calm down
DLKmusic 6th Jul 2018, 4:30 PM edit delete reply

I think that if the three stooges were told that they had to invite Ophelia to dinner on the town by way of apology, and that they needed to be on their best behavior (or else), and Ophelia got to do her best Malati impersonation during the entire dinner, she might be able to call it even-steven.

come to think of it, I wouldn't mind seeing that dinner unfold as a quick side arc! Being forced to be seen in public with a Cassian that looks like she will tear them limb from limb if they make a single social faux-pas!

Did the house take any damage form the monsoon ?
megados 11th Jul 2018, 4:31 PM edit delete reply

Great to hear that! Yes, let's hope any other problems are minimal.
Thundarl 10th Jul 2018, 10:17 PM edit delete reply

My memories of working with some users trying to troubleshoot their problems were rough sometimes. Needless to say it was a strain on us when the company sent out updates and we had to spoon feed the designated point-of-contact how to do the updates because Air Force in their infinite wisdom wouldn't let us remote in and do it right the first time. One POC totally frustrated 2 shifts of Level 2 System technicians and then I came on the 3rd shift to take over. He thought he knew more than us. I was able to get him to listen after I had him do some directories and see if there were certain directories and having said "Oh, S**t!" I had thought he'd wiped out the database directory. He listened after that and we were finally able to complete the update which included swapping some hard drives and resetting some pointers.

Just_IDD 11th Jul 2018, 3:14 AM edit delete reply
Seeing that excellent question reminded me of a a par of other questions that I had that may or may not be excellent.

I seem to remember that new Troy required Androids to be terminated after some period of time, and then I got the feeling that Dolly was near it. So my two questions are.

1) Does Dolly's new body take her out of that requirement?

And this is the question linking these two thoughts...
2) I get the impression that the Castians have exceeded the New Troy Replacement schedule. Is that the case? Fortunately they are part of Nova Roma's hierarchy.

3) I guess a third question would be is there a physical deterioration of the brain/mind that the New Troy policy is set to cover?
megados 11th Jul 2018, 5:20 AM edit delete reply

As I remember it, the NT termination rule is 100 years. I don't think that a new body exempts one from the rule. Dolly is 60 years old, so she'd have another 40 years, if my memory is right.

The Cassians aren't bound by the NT rule, but I don't think we have seen any 100+ year old Cassians in the story anyway, but I could be wrong.

Rather than a physical deterioration, my impression was that it's a degradation of the data structure, leading to a kind of dementia over time, that the NT rule was meant to address.
SeanR 11th Jul 2018, 8:42 AM edit delete reply
I think you mean "'meant' to address".
As I recall, from my earlier reading, the real issue was humans who didn't want to be completely replaced by immortal androids.
megados 11th Jul 2018, 4:22 PM edit delete reply

Truthfully, I think it's probably a little from column A and a little from column B.

I think I might understand the dementia angle a little better after watching Westworld S2. They do a decent job in portraying a possible pathology of data structure breakdown. In those cases it seems to be somewhat predictable and inevitable, like a sort of progressive cascade failure.

I can see where some humans in the DC Universe would be eager to latch on to this as ammunition for maintaining the 100 year rule as well.
