Re: Alt text, If that is Katya's progress in just a couple of days, it's quite impressive. Not a nitpick, but just curiosity: Dusty's speech font and demeanor was more flowy and catlike before. Is she also changing?
Poor Cyana. That sunburn looks awful. Perhaps her back injury is helping in that she's being spared some of the pain? Here's hoping for a full recovery!
I wonder what platform Skeeter will eventually find himself in! :D
To be fair, while she may not be a mathematic genius, there may be things that she could be a natural at excelling in, such as :
(but not limited to)
- Catnaps
- Hunting laser dots
- Eating food
- Runnin' rilly rilly fast!
- Evisverating Gutters with her claws.
- Looking at pretty butterflies.
- Having pretty bows in her hair.
- Playing with Dusty !
I would look for her to be a likely savant at some physical coordination-related skills. I'd be handing her a laser-tag rifle and playing fun games of swat-the-incoming-drone with her, or seeing if she has aptitude for piloting skills.
I don't know about piloting as such though; even if she's really really good at the piloting part, actual piloting is always in the context of a whole lot of aircraft systems and protocols and conditions that require other mental skills.
Ah, OK, Centcomm. I had thought the old font kinda fitting (catlike) before, is all. Thanks :D
Those are important skills, Sheela! :D
Morituri, I agree that realistically, she probably does have some predisposition to some real inherent abilities. It would be good to find out what they might be.
I find the old font quite pleasant but then, I've spent much of the past 40 years dealing with one form or another of the early medieval calligraphies.
At the risk of TMI, I've had sunburn that bad before. And this? This is the LEAST awful it's going to look for the next week or so.
Second-degree burns are deceptive in that while you're out in the sun, the sun keeps the skin too dry for the blisters to show up. Even moreso if you're dehydrated, which Cyana was. So it just keeps doing damage.
Now that she's out of the direct sun, and getting some hydration, in about ten to fifteen minutes it'll be blossoming into a patchwork crazyquilt of blisters that completely covers the exposed skin. Which is absolutely horribly ugly, but way better than being too dehydrated for it to happen.
and it's going to itch for a couple of years...
I burnt myself bad as a kid and again in Bermuda, so bad I almost had to be medevaced but that would have meant being charged with 'self inflicted injuries' so I talked my way out of it...
Note: spending the day snorkelling at least eight feet down for most if it does not slow the summer sun down in the least...wear a shirt !
Back looked like a well done double cheese pizza and ended up taking middle of the night soaks in collodial oatmeal for several years after
Hopefully, 39th century medicine has evolved to deal with such things
Aloe gel is astonishingly good for burns, especially if you get it fast. They have some plant called 'medes' in-comic that is good for general regeneration; presumably it's at least as good as aloe for burns.
I had never heard about colloidal oatmeal, but I used aloe while it was healing and liberally slathered moisturizing lotion for the next year.
I had what might have been second degree sunburn as a kid all over my back and shoulders (I was maybe 8?) and it wasn't just uncomfortable, it also caused nausea and a fever for the first day or two, as well as forcing me to sleep on my stomach, or at least try to sleep anyway. It took a few days before I started peeling, at which point the stinging/burning sensation was mostly gone, but then I had small sheets of skin coming off a layer at a time. I don't remember much about it anymore, just that it was no fun at all and I never ran around in the sun without a shirt again, at least not for hours at a time.
Can you say "Fashion sense of a five year old, encouraged in unconventional directions by Prince Decimus?"
Her unique wardrobe style - not the individual outfits, but the style - may wind up being like Dusty's collar. Something that she keeps because it's hers.
NOW: would be the time to let every one else out there know,, that there is a new player on the map....
ya know,, a general broad cast of " New Bad Guys took out water supply.. be on look out.!! " ..at least..
Sounds like Katya will have a learning partner in Cyana. As Cyana being farther along probably, her helping Katya will hopefully help them bond and let Cyana greive properly as she is able too.
I don't know how old Katya is supposed to be, but if she's learning her ABCs and 123s at her apparent age (teenage or older?), then she is definitely going to be fighting an uphill battle unless she was genetically modified for neuroelasticity. It's good to see that she's interested in learning and is making good progress, as that will provide more encouragement to keep learning. :)
age = 15 .. mental age of 3 when first introduced. since both (dusty & Katya.) are gene jokes, they were 'created' about the same time..
food an drink drugging, possible , but not likely,.. since she was deemed 'un-trainable' they did not try..
Considering that she's not been with them or been actually taught long, for an adult to learn that much when she was deliberately kept ignorant for so long is incredibly good
I may be remembering this wrong, but isn't the story line that Katya and Dusty were created in some sort of super soldier project? Maybe some of those capabilities will come in handy in the next few pages?
Ah, it's that one [name redacted] comic. It goes up and down like a yo-yo. It starts going down, then a couple hundred quick bot votes and its back up again.

That's a nice shirt she's almost wearing

*hopes Cyana will be fine again soon* *hugs her*
...wow, even her speech pattern changed already - she is speaking more clearly now...

I wonder if this is cannon? Maybe PPC cannon even?
