Re: Alt text, It depends whose side you're on! ;) (Yes well done, Artist)
There's a lot to unpack here, given the last few pages, and more yet to come? Tokyo Rose has them enthralled what with Agamemnon essentially telling Cent to shut up, and Aeneas "I missed :(" XD This is getting more and more entertaining!
Also, I'm still liking these environmental visuals!
Which is a thing in many places, mostly in the south in the US...
possibly the highest cholesterol count of any food though...
which may not be so bad since now Dr's are saying that the choleserol in food is meaningless
butter and eggs are good for you now...and now I'm not reading any more studies ;)
Why do I begin to suspect not all instances of Aeneas' voice were instances of Aeneas' voice? Can't access to a secure communication console? Play a loud recording of Aeneas's voice in the unsecured corridor outside and see if you get lucky.
Well, I hate having to make this post … but … As some may know, I live in Denmark.
And here in Denmark, the Coronavirus has just exploded.
It has, over the last 4 days doubled about every 24 hours, and that's just the ones we know about.
Anyways, the country is pretty much in the process of shutting down, except for bare essentials.
I hope where ever you guys live, won't get hit as hard.
But frankly, at the time of typing, it looks like all countries will be hit by it .. eventually.
- And it moves fast! -
Like properly fast!
Heck, some of the movies out there on deadly diseases, are slower than this real life virus is. But at least it isn't as deadly, as the imaginary viruses.
If your country is still talking about "halting the spread" and "quarantine", then you are already too late by a month or two.
Here's an infection graph for Denmark :
In just 13 days, from 1 infected, to 514 infected !
And there's no signs of slowing down just yet.
Shit is getting serious, Fam!
Those numbers may not sound like much, but Denmark only have 5.7 million inhabitants … now imagine a big population, like USA's 380 million ?
Yeah, those numbers will be bigger.
Anyways, my point is that if I suddenly vanish from the comments section … well .. it was nice knowing you. 😀

Pffft .. Just kidding, but the WiFi might get shut down. 🤣
I'm sorry to hear that, Sheela. Yes, you're right, it's bad. I'm in the US in an area which isn't too hard hit, . . . yet. In Washington state it just exploded like you say. From just a few cases to over 1000 since Jan 19, after exploding in Wuhan. They're cancelling large gatherings, games are being played without spectators, and they're going to start restricting unnecessary travel to some areas. If you can, stay out of the public as much as possible, wash hands and keep good general hygiene and just be careful. Stay safe!
Get some Vitamin D in the winter, and keep your health as good as you can, it will give your body the best chance at fighting the virus .. just like with a regular influenza.
Hmm, I always associated oranges with vitamin C. They have D too? We do usually have fruit around. Yeah vitamins from food is better, but just to make sure . . .
Some orange juice is fortified with vitamin D like they do for milk because so many people are dairy sensitive, and milk is normally the thing that is fortified with vitamin D³.
@sheela at least people who die don't mutate into horrible monsters that spread the disease.
I have somewhere in excess of three months worth* of Mountain House, and well in excess of that in toilet paper.
Great thing about Mountain House, they started canning the stuff over fifty years ago and they STILL don't know what the maximum shelf life is (but it is at least in excess of thirty years). So, if I don't need that food this year, (and I didn't need it last year or the year before,) it'll still be good for next year.
*It's been awhile since I've done inventory, so I don't remember if that was three man-months, or three months for the anticipated rate of consumption.
That is so far detected, unfortunately. There is little in the way of testing capacity so far, and there isn't any sort of standard procedure as yet. The impetus seems to be more focused on keeping the stock market from hemorrhaging red ink. Worried about starting a panic, information was slow to emerge. Containment is no longer an option. Mitigation is now what's being attempted, but without testing, that's made more difficult. There are actually people emptying store shelves. It's going to get worse before it gets better, and I hope people don't out-stupid themselves.
I didn't want to speak to the percentages in other countries, because my information could be unreliable, but yes, there are higher mortality rates than here. Be careful.
My uncle is quarantined here in the states, not since he was exposed, but because he's got almost every risk factor for being a fatality if he gets it. He's bored but we've gotten him a few new games to keep him entertained.
If Iremember correctly, 'quarantine' is an enforced seperation from society, one that used to be imposed on ships that had an illness on board and were requjired to 'fly the black flag' when coming into port...
It was originally forty days, the word 'quarantine' coming from 'quarante' and the forty day span being entirely arbitrary but conforming to the 'forty days and forty nights' mentioned in rewritten Scripture...the orginal Hebrew term just meaning 'a long time' like we use 'a month of Sundays' today...
It made a lot of sense, which disturbs me, because I distrust this 'national' news site more than most.
In all likelihood, a few weeks from now the media will have a new 'flavour of the week' and this will be forgotten...hopefully...
I don't really want to see anyone get sick but I don't want to see anyone hurt by unnecessary panic either...
According to some articles, asians in California are supposedly arming themselves against possible reprisals and after watching previous episodes I can't say I blame them...
Especially given that it's not 'redneck country' where people tend to help each other out instead.
But the politicians will have decided to keep on with it for months to come or as long as there's money to be spread around to potential vote-buyers or cronies...because that's all most of them are interested in or understand.
So far it's not even close to being as bad as a normal flu season, when the numbers are translated into comparisons instead of headlines, but time will tell, it could very well change either way.
It might be nothing but hot air or it might be the next 'spanish flu', one thing's for sure though the media is not telling the whole story, only what they're paid to tell.
Noroviruses ravage cruise ships on a regular basis but there haven't been any recollections of those..it's as if no cruise ship has ever had an infectious disease on board before...
Still, stay safe, keep up your personal protection drills, avoid airports and cruise ships or anyone who's been near one and don't forget to buy more toilet paper ;)
One good thing though...the price of gas has dropped below $4/gal for the first time in recent memory...
The media is blaming the virus while the Saudis and the Russians are, and have been for awhile, engaged in a price war to try and keep some market share while they try to drive the North American fracking industry out of business so they can jack the prices up even higher again...
Either way, I'll take it...until we get an extra gas tax slapped on because 'we're using too much gas now and that makes the Earth sweat' o.O
Memes and media aside, the fact is that the CDC reports that COVID 19 is a good deal more contagious than influenza norovirus. Also, influenza strains have a 0.1% mortality rate, while this strain of Coronavirus has a low end mortality rate (in the US so far) of 1%, and some estimates in other countries are higher. So even if we use the 1% estimate, it's ten times more deadly than the flu. This is CDC, and NIH info, not media hype. It is actually more infectious, and more deadly.
The stock market started dropping before the Saudi price war, and overproduction. The economic volatility is also a product of lack of confidence in ability to contain the infections.
Also grab a pallet of bottled water because well, water. I work in that industry and it's a madhouse in Southern United states right now trying to keep water in stores in some major cities. It seems the panic level is quicklly escalating with latest 30 day travel ban from UK to US just put in place. I think it's 30 days too late but better late than never. Also it's big when the NBA shuts down season losing millions of dollars. The stock market continues to crash. This is serious stuff. Meanwhile a day ago I had to sit in room all day elbow to elbow with 2,000 strangers for jury duty SMH.
I was just down shopping for groceries .. and the bread section was CLEANED !! There was plenty of toilet paper though.
I've invented a new game, called "Make the shelves look empty", where you move things all the way to the back, and make them stand as concentrated as possible, to maximise the empty shelf space as possible. That makes the shelf look empty, and raisesimproves peoples panic levels! 😈
It's not so much a shortage as modern 'supply chain' issues...
Most supermarkets and 'big box' stores don't have as much warehouse space as people assume.
They restock on an 'as anticipated' basis which means when more of a product is bought then expected...
they end up with an empty shelf until the next scheduled delivery for that particular item...
which might be some way down the list for pickup by the trucks headed for local stores...
No idea why toilet paper has had a run, except for the media saying there is...
Once it started being a news 'story' I watched people going with shopping carts full...
but only the huge 'store brand' packages...there's tons of the smaller packs sitting untouched
and in every sales flyer this week, toilet paper is on sale...dragging people in to impulse buy other stuff
apparently people didn't know they were supposed to wipe their arse until the TV told them to...
went shopping this afternoon, for about a half dozen things, toilet paper not being one of them...
it was beyond description...the staff stocking the shelves were shaking their heads and laughing.
watched a clip on the news with some old girl coming out of Costco saying "they're all crazy.."
then when the camera panned past her cart, she had 4 industiral sized packages of toilet paper in it.
saw tuna in Dollarama cheaper than the supermarket so grabbed a few cans just because
no Sheela it's not for you...I'm still missing a slipper
just as good I did, got to the grocery store and noticed the canned fish shelves were stripped o.O
Same with beef broth that was on the list for stew...
the only type gone was beef, all the others were fully stocked...
did some talking head say people should drink beef stock ?
I thought it was chicken soup when you're sick ? there was lots of chicken and all the other broths left...
hand sanitizer...gone...I think there's still most of a half gallon jug somewhere in the house from when I used to refill the small bottle I kept in my pocket for work but I don't plan on washing the car with it...
I'm wondering how long it's going to be before we see the usual thugs shooting people for their toilet paper and hand sanitizer instead of their sneakers and iphones...
The sheeple waiting for someone to sell them something to make the virus go away...
because we've never, ever had one before...
kids are selling hand sanitizer outside of stores for a dollar a squirt...
people getting thrown off of e-bay, amazon and kijiji for ludicrous attempts at price gouging...
fake 'testing kits' being sold online for astronomical amounts...
even televangelists getting reamed for selling "online miracle 'cures'" pray for pay scares viruses away...
you KNOW what's next....
because the only instinct stronger than self-preservation is making money off of someone else's misfortune
What sort of odd resource mix do these AIS systems have that they aren't archiving every scrap of discussion between them forever with full indexes as well as imagining that none of their peers aren't doing the same thing.
Ah, this one is kinda complicated.
You see, even if you store the exact same data, the filter with which your consciousness works with, is different.
Two different people/entities/AIS will look at the same data, and see two different things.
Kinda like how the devil would read the bible very differently than a human would.
probably quite a bit differently, since he'd likely have the original text before it got 'translated' a half dozen times and a lot of things got changed....
seeing as in the original scriptures, before the medieval xtian church rewrote them to scare people into doing as they were told, the being they renamed 'satan' after 'shaitan' (who is someone else entirely and not the same thing as the serpent in Genesis) was G-d's 'right hand man' He sent to earth to 'test people and prosecute them' a la Job...he'd definitely know his employer ;)
It seems that Rose cannot, after all, be reasonably accused of having failed to share intel with the rest of the cadre here.
Whatever judgment Centcomm may have made about Rose's conclusions as to its meaning, Rose was able to gather it. Over what appears to have been a period of years. That made it clear that she had sources inside the palace and assets (at least intelligence sources and quite possibly covert-ops forces) on the ground.
In light of this information, failure to seek an alliance or current intel when putting this operation together is visibly idiotic.
Rose and Cent do not trust one another, and have no real reason to. But their informed opinions of Decimus - "Festering Cockwart" and "Dangerously Unstable" respectively - were not in conflict and did admit the possibility of mutually beneficial coordination here.
It isn't completely clear to me how much of the foregoing was previously shared, and how much is now being shared for the first time, since Tokyo Rose finally has someone who will listen to her.
If all this is 'old news', one might have expected Rose to throw in at least one "... as you can see from this transmission dated X, with return receipt, eight #%$@! years ago!"
I, personally, have to agree with Tokyo Rose that she has an ironclad case that Aeneas did survive with a more-or-less intact personality core ... now. Just look at the guy with angry puppy eyes. Still wondering where Centcomm's logical flaw came in, if all this information has been in her possession for years.
Actually the vibe I'm starting to get from Rose's monologue is that Rose suspects CentCom may have actually known and encouraged or at least wanted much of what Rose has said happened. Note Rose seems to focus on how all the events "introduced potential failure points in the palace's defenses and com networks". CentCom would want that. So I think Rose is trying to show Cent was much closer to the truth than she's admitting and probably knew Aeneas wasn't a total loss. Just my take on all this so far.
To be fair, Tokyo Rose is a major league hacker.
For all we know, she might *actually* know what data Centcomm had.
Especially if she presented it to the other AIS's.
The most amusing thing to me about this spiel is that it highlights the fact that if someone wanted to stage an elaborate deception to create the illusion of a live Aeneas over the fact of a dead Aeneas, the most likely culprit is the one claiming it isn't possible.
We already know that Tokyo Rose can reach out and own any simple automation in Nova Roma because of the trick she played with Nox's severed head. So, using her cyberpathy, SHE could have arranged Acantha's safe passage, produced the mysterious voices, and probably have even subverted an interior defense turret with the goal of getting Decimus to start crippling his own defenses. So, if her abilities were known to her audience, her entire argument falls apart like wet tissue paper.
In order to convince them she hasn't been withholding information, she has to withhold information. ^_^
information - again,, i don't know of ANY one origination that shares 100% of its info all the time.!
power - we don't know TR true power.. but you sed "severed head" yes she can manipulate circuits, but not FIX them, she needs boot on the ground to do that..
oh an whoever ((Aeneas)) was the 'voice' caused him (dicmus) to gut his internal defenses.. thats why he had guards everywhere..
I think every AI know that Cent is limited in her logic, compassion, ability to admit any error by her "repurposed" military origins. As Rose stated it is on ongoing source of frustration. I am seeing this as an intervention.
"Cent, you are sick and in need of help. The fix will be "painful" as we integrate new core processors and sub routines into your systems, but the end result will definitely be worth it." Cent's self preservation routines will kick in and prevent any such repairs, but maybe with Calliopy Talor's help they could pull it off.
good take on it but I think Centy's hard-wired 'self preservation' circuits will resist any attempt to alter her programming...but they were never intended to stop a cyberpath, especially one of TR's capability...and going by the damage she caused 'containing' the last one, she knows it.
I was rereading this chapter, & realized a few pages back, that Cent confessed to planning 2 AI murders. First, she was going to overwrite Aenious with a copy of herself. Then she was going to overwrite the copy with his backup files. She really doesn't see any of them as people, including herself.
What you say is true, but I can't say whether it's because she doesn't think of them as people, or because she puts a higher value on her objectives. (Or both?)

I've learned to trust very little in the media and if they told me the sky was blue I'd go outside and look :)
4.638 + 68.284 = 72.922, and 4.638 / 72.922 = 0.06360¨
So that would be 6.36%, if my math is correct.
But some are in very poor areas indeed.
In the western world we may fare better.
Also, the graph I posted, is people who *have* been tested, and came out positive.
But there's not really any places left free of infection by now, the pandemic is already global.
But they're probably not taking visitors, either.
What about Spitsbergen? Of course, if you did need medical assistance, you'd be out of luck.
The average age of fatalities from this virus seems to be around eighty and it looks like nursing homes are where some cases are concentrated.
The Italian government has ordered most people to stay indoors most of the time but they're still being entertained...
I just read an article where pornhub is giving them all free 'premium service' ;)
As for quarentine, I guess my entire country is technically in quarentine.
"Quarantine" = lock on the outside of the door.
"Imprisonment" = Lock on the outside.
"Quarantine" = An agreement to use the lock until certain conditions are met.
