This is apperently whats wrong with my hands, it makes using and bending the fingers painful or downright annoying,

Dupuytren's (du-pwe-TRANZ) contracture is a condition that gradually causes connective tissue (fascia) under the skin of your palm to thicken and become scar-like. Although Dupuytren's isn't always painful, it does restrict movement. The thickened tissue forces several fingers -- usually your ring and pinky fingers -- to curl in toward your palm. The bending caused by the thick tissue is called contracture.

Authors note, it IS painful..

The problem is obvious: You should never ram a knife through your hand when operating a chainsaw. I thought everyone knew that.

Thanks, Keltyzoid!

Go easy on your hand, Centcomm, I hope the specialist can help, and no worries about pages until your hand is better! Hugs!

Wait, what? OMG. I thought that was the standard procedure. ...

Thinking about this, it's possible using chainsaws isn't quite as bad as I thought. I'm sure not ramming the knife through my hand wouldn't make it any quieter, vibrate less, or make the exhaust smell less bad. But using this technique you recommend does suggest it would be less unpleasant than I remembered.

Thank you very much for this tip. I hope to never have to use a chainsaw again, but if I do need to at some point, I'll try to keep this advice in mind.
Sheela 19th Mar 2020, 4:33 AM edit delete reply

Yeah, I thought everyone knew this, you're obviously supposed to use an axe instead.

This is what happens when you try to fix bayonets on what should be the bayonet ;)
Sheela 19th Mar 2020, 10:38 AM edit delete reply

You use chainsaws as bayonets ?
megados 19th Mar 2020, 11:23 AM edit delete reply

Chainsaws affixed to chainsaws, ending in a bayonet, total length, 2 meters. :D

. . . . Oh, and an axe! XD

the media thinks you can...which is all that matters, facts are irrelevent.

Don't worry, the axe won't add to the overall length, you're supposed to dual wield it !

Magazines in left side pouches, gasoline in right side ones...
Sheela 22nd Mar 2020, 1:29 PM edit delete reply

Strap the pouches to the axe, that way when you need to change magazine on the rifle, you can just chuck them in there. 🤣

Andrew Armstrong 18th Mar 2020, 5:09 AM edit delete reply
You don't say what the problem is, but whatever, I hope that it gets better soon and specially that the pain reduces quickly.

FWIW, I can't, for example, use a mouse or trackball right handed because after 5 minutes pain starts and my hand seizes up (damage done when at school, trying and failing to meet the required handwriting standard). This may not work for art, but I find that using a good quality trackball left handed enables me to work efficiently without pain, even for intensive work such as CAD which I spend a lot of time doing. Is there any adaptation you could do along those lines to reduce the stress on the damaged hand?

I'd guess that all your supporters have a lot of sympathy for you and wish you well, just like wot I do. {{{hugs}}}

Probably not telling you anything you don't already know, but if it's arthritis like mine, everyone has a method ;)

The best thing I've found is my mother's old method of soaking your hands in hot water...
as hot as you can stand it for as long as you can stand it...
it works for me but of course everyone's different...
and aspirin...tylenol and advil are useless to me, only aspirin seems to do anything at all..
which is handy since there was an article today, from a very reputable source, saying that ibuprofin based pain killers make the coronavirus much worse if you take them when you have it.
Centcomm 18th Mar 2020, 6:27 AM edit delete reply

Yeah over the counter pain meds are out, thye can cause conflicts with my heart meds. Im taking T3s to combat the pain.
Oldarmourer 19th Mar 2020, 8:19 AM edit delete reply
Tylenol 3's are the only Tylenol that have the slightest effect on me...
It's instant pain relief though...two of them knock me out cold for several hours
Apparently I (along with a good percentage of people) hypermetabolize opiods and the codeine hits me all at once

My physio's favorite treatment for many issues:
1) soak in hot water for 3-5 minutes
2) (opt) do stretching/ passive movement where the other hand moves the hand. for 1-2 minutes
3) ice cold water for 3 minutes
4) repeat 1-4 times. sometimes the treatment protocol is just #1 and #3
Centcomm 18th Mar 2020, 6:28 AM edit delete reply

sadly its affecting both hands
Oldarmourer 18th Mar 2020, 7:33 AM edit delete reply
I had to have surgery to free up one of my fingers when the tendon got stuck in it's sheath 'stenosing tenosynovitis'
Now there's scar tissue under the skin in that palm and the incision never did close properly...
Not quite the same condition as yours but I can sympathize...
The physiotherapist coated the hand in hot wax each time I went before and after surgery, which helped a lot.
Neuropathy from freezing both hands almost solid several times when I was a child, and *sigh*an 'adult' doesn't help either ;)
But the hot treatment still works..for a bit...
That and capsaicin cream, but don't touch your face after using it, you'd prefer the coronabug...
Found that out by accident when I fired a can of pepper spray into my hand by accident...it was like WD-40...instant relief
Some Ed 18th Mar 2020, 7:02 AM edit delete reply
I think most of the time they say "this condition isn't always painful", it really means, "some people will go for years without actually feeling the need to see a doctor about this, so we can only imagine it wasn't as excruciatingly painful all of that time... It certainly wasn't due to the fact that it took us years to properly diagnose them. All of the other diagnoses we gave them for the many prior visits they made complaining of chronic hand pain had to be 100% accurate, after all, we made them."

This sounds like a really problematic condition, and not one that we'd have any remedies that would work in a reasonable time frame. I would like to be able to say something that would be helpful, but right now my mind is kind of stuck. I'm sorry that you're having to endure this.

@Centcomm, Dupuytren's contracture is something I have heard of. I think there are a few options for you, but I'm not sure which would help you most. There are exercises, injections, and surgical options. What have you learned so far?
Oldarmourer 18th Mar 2020, 11:12 AM edit delete reply
for anyone still following the "we can't call it 'wuhan' anymore" virus, latest studies suggest quinine may be effective against it

watch for the run on tonic water at the grocery stores to start ...and then, of course, gin to go with it ;)
megados 18th Mar 2020, 11:25 AM edit delete reply

Nice, but in the US, quinine is only available by prescription, or black market, due to pharmaceutical companies, so we avoid that.
Oldarmourer 18th Mar 2020, 1:28 PM edit delete reply
It's still in tonic water, just sort of diluted today...you can't sell it as 'tonic water' without quinine as an ingredient.
Still, quinine tablets are easily available, so far, and they're dirt cheap...again, 'so far'...prices will probably be going up tomorrow...
Anyone contemplating travel to a tropical country can get a prescription usually with no questions asked...
Most Dr's will tell you to take them on principle...so far...
megados 18th Mar 2020, 1:45 PM edit delete reply

Yeah, you can drink 5 gallons of tonic water, I suppose XD
robnot 18th Mar 2020, 5:40 PM edit delete reply
NO.. you can get it in " Tonic syrups. " for mixing drinks at some liquor stores..
now normal "Tonic water " has 83mg (by law) ,, typical starting douses start at 500mg.. soo
you have to be careful in "mixing " or you can overdose .. and yes you can goto jail , if you mix for some one else...
megados 18th Mar 2020, 6:08 PM edit delete reply

My main point was that since it's hard to get any concentration w/o jumping through hoops, I doubt people will be making runs on stores for it. :)
Deoxy 24th Mar 2020, 8:57 AM edit delete reply

Australia has raised its alert level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate."
Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we might need to cancel the barbie this weekend!"
and "The barbie is canceled."
So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.
Oldarmourer 22nd Mar 2020, 6:38 PM edit delete reply
The English are feeling the pinch and have therefore raised their alert level from "Miffed" to "Peeved."
There are rumblings the levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross."
The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out.
The virus has been re-categorized from "Tiresome " to "A Bloody Nuisance."
The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards."
They don't have any other levels.
This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

If you can't guess the tune, that's not my fault, you've had about fifty years to learn it ;)

Centcomm is primed for war again
Over Calliope or maybe Lynn
Because someone in shadows was slinking
Tried to subvert them 'cause he was thinking
That their DNA could override that brain
But they still remain
Above her guise of sentience

Her enemies they fall alone
Their cities torn down stone on stone
From the depths of many hidden ramps
She sends retribution to enemy camps
And their eyes are stabbed by the flash of a fusion light
That splits the night
Sent from the vaults of Centcomm

Behind that dazzling light I saw
Ten million drones, and maybe more
Warbots walking without speaking
Warbots loaded with arms bristling
Lasers, cannon, and missles; lots to spare
For someone dared
Disturb the vaults of Centcomm

"Fools," said I, "You should have known
her only council is her own
A thorough lesson she will teach you
her force of arms will reach you."
And the MIRV's like silent raindrops fell
And blossomed into wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the AI god they'd made
But they all ignored her warnings
And all the droids that she sent swarming
And Pinky said, "I give you what you asked in full"
In quantities Apocryphal
Fusion, chemical and orbital

And brought forth the sounds of science."

If he called you to the castle you might not come out alive
He stood six-foot-one, IQ 'bout sixty-five
Burnt out above the shoulders his clutch was startin' to slip
But everybody knew you didn't give no lip
to Prince Douche

(Prince Douche)
(Prince Douche)
Big Bad Douche
(Prince Douche)

Nobody seemed to know how Douche got the throne
He went hunting with his father and came back alone
He didn't think quite like you or I
But you always made sure to drop your eyes to Prince Douche

Somebody said he was born to be mean
Since he got his genes from his mother the Queen
Others said "that boy just ain't right in the head"
Right before they ended up creatively dead
Touchy Douche

(Prince Douche)
(Prince Douche)
Daft Mad Douche
(Prince Douche)

Then came the day in the bowels of the city
When a sapphire haired droid stalked the halls without pity
Blueshirts were running but the Cassians stood fast
And everybody thought that they'd breathed their last
'cept Douche

Through the dust and smoke of this man made hell
Walked a douche of a man that the Cassians knew well
Then he got grabbed round the waist by the droid he liked most
And just like that Old Douchie was toast
Fried Douche

(Prince Douche)
(Prince Douche)
Free Carbon Douche
(Prince Douche)

Aeneas got fixed with a fair bit of luck
Then TR yelled out "the protocols are all fucked !!"
And the city was saved from a would be grave
But it cost Acantha the life of her favourite slave
Bad Douche

Maxus and Tennyo now run the town
While Acantha and Noctis are New Troy bound
And the people and the Cassians are feeling fine
Now they know it really was the end of the line for Mad Douche

(Prince Douche)
(Prince Douche)
Bye Bye Douche
(Prince Douche)

Now they closed off for good that access road
They put up a sign and on it they wrote
Not a good place to pick lobsters or dulse
Down the road here a piece lies a waste of a pulse
Dead Douche

(Prince Douche)
(Prince Douche)
Good Riddance Douche
(Prince Douchey Wooshey)

not bad, dude! If you haven't heard the Disturbed remake of this yet, it's worth You-Tubing. Even Paul Simon admitted it was better than the original (and I always liked the original).
Oldarmourer 18th Mar 2020, 7:44 PM edit delete reply

Thanks for the kind words, even if they're undeserved...and unearned.
A few lines I'm kind of happy with, the rest is pure schlock but it's all I've got...until I fix it :)
I like the douchey one better :)

I heard the Disturbed version when it first came out, it had a completely different feel to it than the original and could easily have been a different song.
I definitely liked it, but I didn't care much for the video although I think I facebooked it....
when I was still allowed to facebook...they don't like you reposting real news articles unless they fit the new narrative :)
I'll have to disagree with Paul on this one, if it had been an original song then yes, but after so many years you just expect the 'normal' guitar opening and it isn't the same without it...or the original voices
Oldarmourer 18th Mar 2020, 8:36 PM edit delete reply

moved from above...where I edited it in and it didn't fit

Ironically, I just got off the phone with my son, who's in the middle of the only 'hot spot' in the area...
He said one of the people he works with came back from visiting out of country to a known plague zone a few weeks back...
Long story short, he's sick as a dog with a respiratory bug, got sent home from work by a manager with a mask over her face (after being handed a pack of lysol wipes and told to disinfect his work area)
The number the gov't says to call if you have symptoms goes unanswered except by a robovoice saying to 'call back later'...
We don't think it's the bug (Corona's not a big brand here, the Blue Flu would fit better ;) ) but you never know...
The timing isn't good...not at all...it is flu season though so hopefully it's just that and will pass fairly fast and he'll be alright.
At least he got toilet paper last week when we visited and went to Costco...
although he's wondering what it's supposed to do for a respiratory ailment...
of course we went about the time the first official 'carrier' in the area was roaming around undiagnosed and unpublicized

A friend of mine has had this in both hands, on most of her fingers, probably as a result of diabetes. It was fixed surgically - which obviously takes a while for full recovery - but she has been fine since. It may be No Fun [TM] to get through this but I hope your hands can be fixed as effectively as hers were, whether surgically or otherwise.

This is just the wrong time, of course, given that health services need to deal with rising Corvid 19 cases. Stone the crows, that virus has a lot to answer for!
