Since it was over two years ago, here's the scene in question for anyone who needs a refresher of what happened.

Looks good Cent, try not to push it too far too fast.
Hrist seems to have a 'formal way of speaking' *filed for future reference*
It's always good seeing the little individualisms that slide so subtly into the dialogue, a tip of the hat to Rose too.
Can Feelie download the video from the encounter or put her memories on screen for everyone to see ?
Or does her data storage/retrieval not work that way ?
If androids dream then can they share those dreams ?
I'm hopefully optimistic that this means Cent is getting better! Great page Ladies!
Re: Alt text, Yes I figured Ophelia did something to get posted to the wastes, but I never thought she flat out flipped off Douchie! LOL So, androids can "go crazy"?
Now we're back to wondering about the Golden Boys. Hmmm.
Given what we've seen of Feelie's shy and retiring personality, even temperment and calm, thoughtful reaction to unexpected events; I'd have thought something much more memorable than a common gesture was involved ;)
Not really. The closest I remember seeing it, was Noctis' plan resulting in Dec's overthrow, and demise. But the thing is, Noctis was able to get Dec to basically OK the plan, so in essence she was acting with approval. I doubt Dec gave Feelie approval for her gesticulation.
I seem to recall more than a few of them expressing a slight discontent with douchy's management style...
Counting heartbeats or becoming annoyed that they weren't the one to toast him spring to mind :)
If the inhibitors acted on thoughts or non-physical threats, let alone gestuires, instead of actions then the Cassian presence would be greatly diminished from them squirming around on the floor while being punished for it...unless that was douchy's idea all along...
Hmm, it's hard to say, but counting heartbeats, or lamenting their perceived bad luck might not rise to the level of an act of defiance, or disobedience. There would seem to be a fine line past which the inhibitor acts. We've seen instances where it did, so flipping Douchie off wasn't enough of an offense, apparently.
Got two thirds into a rewrite of 'Cecelia', for obvious reasons ;)
Went back to check a few details and saw Gilrandir's version I'd forgotten about...
There ain't no way I can even touch that and anything I did cough up would just detract from his.
Sssoooo back to the sounding board, I've got a half dozen in various states of disrepair ;)
Most of them look like Feelie did before the body swap though
I don't know, @Oldarmourer ... if you have a XXX-rated version with lots of salty language and spicy images, I'd be happy to let you have the floor. ^_^
In all seriousness, though, no one goes back and reads the old stuff anyway, so feel free (at least on my account) to put up new takes on old riffs. It would be the height of hypocrisy for me to complain about someone putting their own lyrics to a song that I put lyrics to, considering that is what I am doing all the time, anyway. I like seeing other people's take on things.
I was actually thinking aout posting a fan page, where the best of the best from our comments get posted there separately.... and enshrine our moments of brilliance!!!
It would include our Lyrics of course, but it would also include things like Sheela's "Group Hug" amd "Urinalien" (that was on white out, but my side is still hurting from laughing at it!) and 2 or 3 of the best songs from each of us, in my humble opinion...
I'm actually curious what everyone thinks about this idea
I think the idea has merit, because as Gilrandir mentioned, there aren't many who go back and read old comments, and even new readers don't seem to when they're binge reading. That said, if there were a page to showcase some of that work, I would have to say it would likely get more exposure.
I would say that's my 2¢, but since there's apparently a coin shortage, I'll just rip a corner off this here dolla bill. (¬_¬)
cask,, the word i think you meant is a tun "cask"..https://cognacs.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/cognac-paradis-cask-volumes-sizes-dimensions.jpg?w=845&h=346
Maybe we could convice whoever's doing this page to add a subsection like 'fan art' for 'fan other stuff' like songs and stories and make it easier all around ?
From what I've seen, this is one of the moreactive comments sections for such things...be that good or bad ;)
At one time I toyed with the idea of posting pointers to my stuff in the Community Section of Terri Hale's Patreon page, so that supporters could track stuff down ... but I wouldn't want to do that without consulting them and I suspect a fan page would be even better by far, as long as someone who isn't me was maintaining it. ^_^
If hosting was an issue, I wonder if you could instead start a freely-hosted Webcomic titled "DataChaser's Fan Page" on Comic Fury, and just add things there as you saw fit. ^_^ If you come across any really good puns, be sure to grab those, too.
Centy, PLEASE don't push yourself too hard!
If Hrist is a strategic-processing Android, then I can't see her being as capable in battle as a tactically-oriented Android.
Strategy involves all the PLANNING of an operation/battle/war (why modern Generals don't "lead from the front"). Tactics are how to deal with things in the immediate area and time. All the strategy in the world ain't worth a squat if the enemy messes up your tactics...
the old saw used to be...
Lt's handle tactics
Lt Col's handle strategy
Lt Gen's hande logistics
Logistics are what makes or breaks a campaign...
"Beans, Bullets and Benzene" are what decides a battle, the first to run short of any of those, generally loses.
that would have been..
bows, bracers, and barbers..
during that age they did NOT have first aid.. no you waited till the barber got to you. also at that time bloodletting was a Big thing ("you have to much, otherwise it would not trying to escape.").. so letting your friend "bleed out" was a thing to do.! and if the barber did not think you bleed out enough , put leeches on.!
i do medieval recreations , i am not only the kingdom knight archer, but also the kingdom barber (Phsyicar.)
There isn't a lot in the way of reenactment around here and most of what there is centres around the 1700's.
I've always had a passing interest in ancient medicine.
Once upon a time, I toyed with the idea of medical school...until life intervened :( and still enjoy reading the history
The Middle Ages were an interesting time, advances, retreats, loss and then rediscovery of Roman Greek and Egytptian techniques
The 'Barber-Surgeon' was indeed a major player, but there were also decidated surgeons and monastic students
Herphilus and Galen gave way to St Benedict and 'Monestarial medicine'
Then to the Salerno schools and scholars such as Guy de Chauliac with rediscovery and innovation coming together
Eventually moving on to Braunschwig and others
Humours and herbs, surgery and sanitation, all things went through stages of sometimes complete reversal
Battlefield surgery was always at the forefront since that had known cause and the treatment was often straightforward
The limitations were known and recognized but often surpassed with new techniques and treatments
There is a vast difference, even over a hundred year span, much like todays tech is different from the 1920's
I'm certainly glad I don't live in 14th century, but your odds were better in the 15th and the 16th.
I'm been reading a series of ship's surgeons logs from the late 18th and early 19th century
It's interesting seeing the various powders, potions and practices in use at the time.
In some ways they far surpassed the 'barber surgeon' and in a few others they seem to have regressed :)
I'm just starting this series on Victorian Medicine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNS3SZQ5IwY
The others from the same page 'absolute history' have been fascinating and very well done
I expect nothing less from this one, it might tweak your interest :)
This is a side of Ophelia that I really like, actually. it was obvious that she liked the troops she was with, but seeing her racked with the "they died and it's my fault" regret...
Damn. If i weren't afraid of the GBH i might receive for it, I would give her a hug right about now, she could certainly use it!
'Survivor's remorse' is a well documented thing.
My grandfather was in the Artillery in WW2, as family lore has it (I never asked him directly)
The entire gun crew he was NCO i/c of was killed by a counter-battery shot in Italy.
He voluntarily reduced in rank rather than take another one.
Eventually, however, he did rise several more ranks and finished the war in one piece although he rarely spoke of it
Except for a few amusing anecdotes when pressed, one involving 'liberated' chickens, a gun barrel and an officer...
Going by what she said to Jordan and Ivy and alluded to with Chawlie, she doesn't mind the odd hug...or a bit more ;)
Giving a GBH without getting GBH in return would be more a matter of how it's presented...and where the hands go
@DLKmusic, you're probably quite right, but I don't think they're mutually exclusive. Under the right conditions, a Great Big Hug could also cause Grievous Bodily Harm. Hmm, now that I think about it, so could a Giant Butterfly Hickey. ;)
When I was a little girl (I was just a girl)
And my brother would call my name (I was just a girl)

and you're noted in his mem-or-y

yeah he loves me like a rock (Loves me like a rock)
He Loves me Like a Rooooo-ooooo-oooock
Quick and dirty...seems to be my forte ;)
I was going to save this in case we had another artist blockage but that's not going to happen...
Not with everyone's prayers, wishes and general good thoughts backing her up
Now we just have to stop Rose from getting sick...we're watching you !! ;)
I'm almost ashamed of this, I liked the original a lot...pity.
Another five minutes I'll never get back, I should start taking more time but then they'd never get done
Which might not be such a bad thing :)

Which is good because I forgot the link...fixed now ;)
I was going to do this one, and probably should have, I think it has more verses to mangle...
Problem is, as with a lot of 'new' tunes today, a lot of people think it's the 'original version'
Maybe later, once everyone forgets this sacrilege I just committed...
A lotof the tunes I 'use' are Canadian ones from the 70's/80's
People might not recognize them because they didn't get as much exposure in the US/Europe
That's why I suggest 'listen first' before trying to make what I allegedly wrote fit them
It's better to hear them properly the first time :)
Guess it comes from spending a lot of time on radio during the 70's/80's/90's, that's the music I know best
And since we were mandated by law to have a large percentage of everything we played Canadian aka 'CanCon'
That's what you get from these disastrous ditties :)
I'm surprised nobody's taken all the old TV shows like this and remade them in a new CGI glory...
I still remember bowls of sugared up cereal, 'polo' pyjamas and entire Saturday mornings spent watching all of them
They'd look good in this style of art too, must be pretty strong copyrights on them or someone would have
Hmm maybe there's some money in making some new models, Cent ? or at least a cameo appearance ;)
The first ones I remember are Supercar and Fireball XL5...
In the early 60's I ended up with 'red measles' and spent a few weeks very ill in a darkened room.
The only things I remember from that are watching Firball Xl5 and 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea'.
They were all good...
Supercar, Fireball, Thunderbirds, Stingray, Capt. Scarlet, Joe 90 and some others...
Their live action successors like UFO and Space 1999 were gems people today may never have heard of
The SFX weren't as 'good' as modern ones but they were more than fantastic for the times.
We knew it wasn't real so it didn't have to look 100% 'natural' and sometimes looked better if it didn't :)
Then there were the 60's sci-fi shows and movies...
Time Tunnel
Land of the Giants
Lost in Space (the good version)
Dr Who
It's About Time
The Invaders
Fantastic Voyage
Robinson Crusoe on Mars
The Godzilla movies
2001
Planet of the Apes
etc, etc.
Some have been remade with varying results, others should be and maybe will once the studios run out of other stuff to mess with.
So, once again the creative team has done a fine and exemplary job leaving me with things to ponder and think about for days after before finally I can articulate my puzzlement.
In the last panel, Hrist throws away a line in response to Ophelia’s requests for an after-action evaluation of her performance. Hrist says “...the situation involved a number of factors that would have complicated analysis.” [emphasis mine]
Assuming Ophelia’s account is being deemed credible, and the identity and capabilities of the hostiles are not known, why is the analysis not ongoing? Aren’t these factors continuing to complicate the analyses even as the two of them are speaking? Rather than merely ‘would have‘ complicated them at the time. Does Nova Roma know something important about these aggressors that isn’t yet being shared with Ophelia?
I'm not sure, now, myself since your mention. I had thought it to mean that 'if Decimus was still in power', since it was brought up earlier in the conversation, and Hrist brings Ophelia's gesture up again in her previous speech bubble.
I think that the investigation is still ongoing. Either that, or this conversation with Ophelia is some final tying up of some loose ends.
I took it as meaning that without Feelie's details, trying to make sense out of what happened purely from looking at the scene would have been complicated. Her information sorted that out for them, as far as it can be sorted out at this time, anyway...
I'd think that as soon as Feelie 'blipped' her report to Tennyo, and seeing Tennyo's reaction to it, a rapid response/investigation team was on the ground before rapeface was :)
It seems that Feelie is asking Hrist if she would have done anything different based on what she considers to be Hrist's superior strategic analysis abilities and Hrist says she doesn't know since it looks like there was too much happening too fast for her to likely have had time to do anything more than Feelie did...
I get the feeling that Hrist might have taken more time before moving in and not been as overconfident, probably sending the drones in for a closer look before advancing, so perhaps things might indeed have gone a bit differently...
as in the Goldiebot taking a few seconds more to wipe out the squad.
To me, Feelie is still rattled. From her perspective, the thing just unloaded with incredible destructive power. She realizes that it's hard to believe, because she was there and she only half believes it, so it stands to reason that someone else might be skeptical. That's why it's reassuring to her that Hrist accepts her story, and saying that she may or may not have fared any better.
Hrist, for her part does some tactical analysis, so it's possible she might have been able to do somewhat better. Logrin did better because he knew it was there. Hrist might have done more recon, or set the team up differently, but who knows?
I completely agree with your intepretation as to the intended meaning of the scene, @Oldarmourer. But Hrist's phrasing seems subtly wrong to me in that case.
I also agree with your reading of Hrist's character. In my opinion in large part because Hrist shows little indication of the ability to form emotional attachments to 'meat' of the sort that Ophelia obviously had with 'her' troopers. Accordingly, Hrist would be far less motivated to act urgently and put herself at risk merely for a chance to save a few extra troopers.
I'm not so sure Hrist would see the 'meat' as being completely expendable.
This is Nova Roma, androids may be seen as tools, to be used up and new ones built as required...
Ooorrrr...they could be seen as very expensive to build while you can 'breed' new soldiers a lot easier
I don't see Hrist as being dismissive of humans and Feelie, while being dismayed at them dying, seems to also be concerned that she'll be held responsible for that through her inaction or poor action.
Given the way Hrist spoke to Maxus and Irene, it seems she has a lot of time for humans...except one ;)
http://datachasers.thecomicseries.com/comics/1213
I was referring to humans as the ‘meat’, not androids, @Oldarmourer. In the referenced scene she is careful to discuss her degree of ‘respect’, but avoids revealing anything of any actual emotional attachment or urge. And respect really only after discovering how badly outclassed she was. After all, if she respected Maxus before, why would she have so badly underestimated him?
Ophelia, I agree, is concerned about being held responsible for the deaths of her friends and allies ... by herself. She seemed to genuinely care about them and her future will be shaped by how well she can make her peace with herself about what she did and did not do as they died. At least that is my opinion.
What was there in the referenced scene that led you to think Hrist had any consideration for any human, beyond that strictly required for her duties? She seems to me roughly evenly matched with TeeDee for misanthropy ... possibly even more so since TeeDee, for all her bluster, appears to care for and relate to human individuals. Any positive interactions that we have seen with Hrist at all (so far) have been only with her Cassian sisters.
I think the generalization in this world is that humans are 'meat' :)
Hrist seems to me to be more tolerant of humans that she's given credit for..maybe not in the biological way Feelie is ;)
Or maybe, I'm not sure if she has the biological 'package'...
I don't really see any animosity towards humans from Hrist, she has an intense loyalty towards Nova Roma
and Nova Roma, like most city states, is it's people...
Hrist makes a distinction between her and Nox, mentioning that Nox hates humans and making that distinction that would imply that she sees herself differently, and does appear to act that way when left with Irene and later on.
I just don't get the impression that Hrist is 'humanophobic' and we see that again when they deliver Katya to Logrin and her sister...
http://datachasers.thecomicseries.com/comics/1518
She might not be as deeply attached to people she's in command of but like Feelie's attachment, she seems to be more like that of a good Officer to their troops...
They both know that there may come a time they'll have to deal with the loss of someone under their command but have different ways of accepting that.
Feelie knows she did what she had to do but she can't help feeling that she didn't do enough to save them
Hrist seems to be more detached but not completely, she wouldn't like losing anyone she didn't have to but she's more pragmatic about it, even accepting Malati's loss in stride
They both know they'll eventually lose 'troops' under their command but Feelie has decided she doesn't have to like it and will say that out loud.
I wasn't implying animosity. Just disregard. Entities beneath her notice and only relevant because her duties include them. Ophelia lost friends. I suspect Hrist would only lose 'numbers' requiring replacement.
Which is what happens when you go up the line from tactics to strategy.
One loss is a catastrophe, a hundred is the cost of gaining ground...sad, but true.
The higher you go, the more casualties will inevitably fall under your command...
With the higher numbers, the less 'personal' but no less tragic they become :(
One doesn't get the impression Hrist commands much in the way of troops. Especially given how much of a point was made about how the Cassians are separate and independent of any military authority or chain of command outside of the throne itself. If she does Strategic Analysis, one assumes it is like an 'armchair quarterback' or 'ivory tower intellectual' as a personal hobby. We did see how well she controlled just a pair of Decimus' Praetorians on her assassination mission for Maxus. Not prime leadership material, I would think.
Somewhere the concept of tactics vs strategy got involved and the conversation got off on a tangent..
Nothing unusual, sort of to be expected around here, really :)
~J, thanks for the refresher tip. I've just realized that I need to re-read 13 years of comics (sigh). I honestly couldn't recall what happened to Ophelia beyond being almost permanently off-lined by some kinda super droid (would have been a shame if she did on account of her being a great character amidst a looong list of such). As Datachasers is in my top three all time favorite comics in any format, re-reading is not a hardship. Time consuming, yes, but not a hardship.
Centcomm, good to see you posting again. While each new post is an undeniable bright spot in my week I would much prefer that you and Rose look to your health. That being said, it's been a while since I've posted here so I'd like to reiterate my thoughts on Datachasers. I have diligently followed this comic since I first discovered it over a decade ago. Why? I was struck by the quality and attention to detail in your work which has only gotten better as time goes on. Combined with Rose's excellent writing, dialogue and characterizations I can't skip a post. I would also add that I love the comments section. Your fans are intelligent, thoughtful, creative and respectful even in disagreement which is really something considering the state of the internet these days. Great work as it always has been and thank you both.

Only 2 years ?
Man, time flies.
...at least poor Ophie gets validated...
Thank you for the update, Cent and Rose - I hope you are not pushing yourself too much...
Sending more healing wishes.
No that I don't REALLY want to know what happens next, I'm just long-term greedy!

And once I'm sittin on the throne (sittin on the throne)

He Loves me Like a Rooooo-ooooo-oooock
I was going to save this in case we had another artist blockage but that's not going to happen...
Not with everyone's prayers, wishes and general good thoughts backing her up
Now we just have to stop Rose from getting sick...we're watching you !! ;)
I'm almost ashamed of this, I liked the original a lot...pity.
Another five minutes I'll never get back, I should start taking more time but then they'd never get done
Which might not be such a bad thing :)
if some of the younger whippersnappers even need the link to the actual tune...
The real tune, shame he died but at least he can't sue me :)
"Sexbots called Centcomm"
I saw a sexbot with pink hair on her head
Making bombs and rockets fall like rain
She made the Generals say Ho Lee Fuck
And forced them all to make peace again
WooHoooo
Sexbots of Centcomm
WooHoooo
WooHooo
Sexbots called Centcomm

A waster mechanic comin' round the Taylor's door

She's the LN blooded bitch who gave poor Ada fits
And TeeDee had to teach her how to play fair
Better stay away from them
They'll blow your head off, then
Just fly off to rescue Lynn Taylor
WooHoooo
Sexbots of Centcomm

Sexbots called Centcomm

Listening to the Sexbot called Centcomm
I saw Doc Silver sitting with the team
Briefed by the Sexbot called Centcomm
I saw a Sexbot get her make up done at Hangar Six
Her hair was perfect
Sexbots of Centcomm again
Go Pink !!
Sexbots called Centcomm
I was going to do this one, and probably should have, I think it has more verses to mangle...
Problem is, as with a lot of 'new' tunes today, a lot of people think it's the 'original version'
Maybe later, once everyone forgets this sacrilege I just committed...
Centbots of Summer
People might not recognize them because they didn't get as much exposure in the US/Europe
That's why I suggest 'listen first' before trying to make what I allegedly wrote fit them
It's better to hear them properly the first time :)
Guess it comes from spending a lot of time on radio during the 70's/80's/90's, that's the music I know best
And since we were mandated by law to have a large percentage of everything we played Canadian aka 'CanCon'
That's what you get from these disastrous ditties :)
It's not one of my best...by far
Watching the buildings, I thought "if C3 and Helios Tower can't do this, then they should be able to"
I'll bet Sheela's could ;)
Battlestations !!
Time Tunnel
Land of the Giants
Lost in Space (the good version)
Dr Who
It's About Time
The Invaders
Fantastic Voyage
Robinson Crusoe on Mars
The Godzilla movies
2001
Planet of the Apes
etc, etc.
Some have been remade with varying results, others should be and maybe will once the studios run out of other stuff to mess with.
how could you NOT list "Santa Claus conquers the Martians"??????
I think that the investigation is still ongoing. Either that, or this conversation with Ophelia is some final tying up of some loose ends.
I get the feeling that Hrist might have taken more time before moving in and not been as overconfident, probably sending the drones in for a closer look before advancing, so perhaps things might indeed have gone a bit differently...
as in the Goldiebot taking a few seconds more to wipe out the squad.
Hrist, for her part does some tactical analysis, so it's possible she might have been able to do somewhat better. Logrin did better because he knew it was there. Hrist might have done more recon, or set the team up differently, but who knows?
I also agree with your reading of Hrist's character. In my opinion in large part because Hrist shows little indication of the ability to form emotional attachments to 'meat' of the sort that Ophelia obviously had with 'her' troopers. Accordingly, Hrist would be far less motivated to act urgently and put herself at risk merely for a chance to save a few extra troopers.

One loss is a catastrophe, a hundred is the cost of gaining ground...sad, but true.
The higher you go, the more casualties will inevitably fall under your command...
With the higher numbers, the less 'personal' but no less tragic they become :(
Nothing unusual, sort of to be expected around here, really :)
