Its much better to be the torturer than the torturee.

Illyana does have a point. Ophidia probably doesn't even know there if she has anything mental booby traps.
Oldarmourer 3rd Mar 2021, 6:14 AM edit delete reply
The booby traps were in the Commander Pauline frame ;)

mjkj 3rd Mar 2021, 12:28 AM edit delete reply

Very distrusting... but that is CentComm paranoia =P

Well, I guess Ophie will be happy to know her origins?

...yeah, Ophie - torture chambers look a bit different...

@alt text: <sarcasm> you think so? </sarcasm> ;)
Rashala 3rd Mar 2021, 1:05 AM edit delete reply

Looks. Ore like the promethazine bipod but that was a torture device for women using it too

I...don't get that reference. Search engines not helping...
Just_IDD 3rd Mar 2021, 4:29 AM edit delete reply
I bet if you changed the mat color from burgundy to hospital aqua it would look less torturey. Objects without built in drains and rooms without built in floor drains help reduce the effect.
Morituri 3rd Mar 2021, 3:26 PM edit delete reply
I didn't think about it while reading, but you're right; the color matters.

I think it would look less threatening if the colors were as neutral as possible and the cushion were charcoal-gray.

Other visual elements contributing to the 'creepy' include the way the cover closes; hinged on three sides like that and with a clear absence of internal control, it looks like it's intended as confinement. If it were a one-piece cover (say, hinged at the top) and had a handle on the inside for pulling it closed, it would look less threatening.

After that, you have the structure of the room. No daylight admitted from the outside. The end with the capsule in it is kind of claustrophobic, and has a big thick armored observation window behind Ophelia in the last panel where it looks like somebody could "observe" an interrogation and not be in any possibility of danger from the prisoner. And then there's the black oval on the floor next to the capsule, looking like a pit it can be dropped into. Finally the way the walls are sloped around the capsule makes it look like the thing is intended to contain an explosion.

Ophelia is right. Every last visual cue here is subtly threatening. And none of that implicit threat is necessary. The same pod, installed in one side of an ordinary hospital room with sunshine coming in through a window, art hanging on the wall, a more neutral color scheme, etc... could do the same job.

And it could carry out most of the implicit threats equally easily too, if it were actually designed for that.

It's almost like the whole set was designed by a visual artist who wanted to present a plot point about Ophelia feeling a little intimidated and threatened by... oh wait.

Personally, I find that particular colour relaxing, although a little darker might be more pleasing...to me.
That orange stripe on the wall has got to go though.
Where I worked, there was alwayssome new study on the colours that were 'restful' and 'peaceful'...
'Hospital green' was one deemed to be desireable but the actual 'on the floor' experience was that it was provoking where a blue was better.
Pink was a very, very bad idea, very bad.
Orange was no better but dark burgundy accents, not red, seemed to be as neutral as you could hope for.
Medium Grey and mid-dark burgundy I found the most innocuous and so do did many others.
It's an individual preference in many ways though and the only thing almost everyone agreed on was that the official government 'babyshit beige' was awful on every level imaginable.

As to the equipment, I tend to think that high tech stuff should look high tech and this certainly does, I wish CAT scan tables looked like that :)
I'd find it to be comforting in it's conformity to purpose, but again, that's just me.
On the other hand, if her head does explode from the probing, the spash shields and thick window would come in handy ;)
Oldarmourer 3rd Mar 2021, 5:09 PM edit delete reply
Each of the side panels look to be wider than the bed surface so they either overlap for double the shielding or they come together quite far up from the occupant so claustrophobia shouldn't be much of a problem ;)

The orange stripe, which I missed the first time, kind of reminds me of a first series Star Trek hallway.
Oldarmourer 5th Mar 2021, 11:14 AM edit delete reply
Oddly enough, I've seen that sort of stripe used in hospitals and other large buildings to let you know which department you're in, sometimes on the wall and sometimes on the floor.
The hospital I spend the most time in has a series of coloured dots on the floor, you just follow the one that matches the department you need to go to and you get there...eventually...stripes would have worked beter at corners though ;)

Different people have different feelings on things, based on their different experiences and preferences.

To me, this looks fine, but what you describe sounds ghastly. Well, apart from the handles to pull it closed, so long as they also look like they could be used to open it again, too.

That said, I may have spent a bit more time than I'd like in hospital settings, not as an employee of the hospital. I've almost certainly watched fewer horror movies than you, especially if we're only counting the ones we've seen end to end. (Does Rocky Horror Picture Show count as a horror movie? If so, I've seen one horror movie end to end. Once.)

Dr. Takahashi and Thor/Illyana seem to be at cross purposes. Does Takahashi know of Illyana's intent? For that matter I doubt Noctis, or anyone in New Rome does.

No torture on the schedule? So, unscheduled torture then? ;)
Oldarmourer 3rd Mar 2021, 6:17 AM edit delete reply
I'm a little surprised Noctis didn't insist on personally observing this but with only two Cassians in the city (that we know of) it might be a case of not putting all your eggs in one basket...
Of course, one sensible method is to indeed put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket very closely ;)

Samanta is (was) there also, I think. I don't know if she's still there; she was going to visit the church of the First Circuit, and meet with Noctis before returning to NR. Noctis couldn't personally be there, because she's bodyguard to Acantha.
Oldarmourer 3rd Mar 2021, 12:03 PM edit delete reply
d'un I completely forgot about Samanta o.O
Still, Noctis being Princeps and all, I'd have thought she'd have wanted herself or Samanta to be present when someone was digging around in Feelie's head...you never know what might be in there...State secrets or just things about State personnel...like what his douchiness used to get up to that nobody else needs to know about, or would want to ;)
megados 3rd Mar 2021, 4:44 PM edit delete reply

I agree, it does seem odd that no one else from NR is to be present here. Ophelia is to be awake, so that might be part of it. It's hard to see the reasoning, though.

*edit: Having Ophelia come to NT seems to have been Maxus' idea, but my guess would be that Noctis would have been informed. If Maxus didn't inform Noctis, she would have good reason to be very irritated. Maybe that's why Samanta was to meet with Noctis?

Looks more to me like a bed from a capsule hotel (which, I suppose, could be considered a ‘torture device’).
