Que The William Tell Overture.
Ranger's gotta point. Maybe the element of surprise will help save the day and get some much needed physical evidence.
Lurker314 15th Dec 2021, 12:26 AM edit delete reply
Okay, now THIS is a Ranger I can accept. He's doing something stupid for the sake of the civvy he can see. He KNOWs it's stupid.

Kinda like signing up in the first place.

But liberty is never free, and someone _must_ pay the rent.
mjkj 15th Dec 2021, 1:41 AM edit delete reply

Wow, I wonder what he has in mind...

...and I hope he can rescue her from the goldies...
Rigor 19th Dec 2021, 3:19 PM edit delete reply

I guess he's going to zoom in, grab the pilot, and run for it. The gold cyborgs will fire on him but if he gets out of range, they won't pursue.

In situations like this, a stupid plan that works right now, beats a great plan after it is too late.
Morituri 17th Dec 2021, 10:49 AM edit delete reply
His plan, if I understand it, is to get this done, or die trying. Given the breadth of those options, he's almost sure to accomplish the mission. Doesn't mean it's a reasonable or smart plan, but it's certainly within his power.

A lot of soldiers after they sober up and review the action, have to admit later that just because it worked, doesn't mean it wasn't a stupid plan. A couple famous ones include Mad Jack Churchill and Audie Murphy, who were both "Too Awesome To Actually Exist But Existed Anyway." More recently, Roy Benavidez, Charles Upham, and Michael Wittmann.

Good Lord, what some guys will selflessly attempt in the face of genuine need, and sometimes, somehow, it turns out that they CAN.

Looks like this guy who realizes that in advance, a little bit ahead of them.

"This is so crazy, it just might work!"

"Get her? That was your plan?"

I'm really wondering what he's going to do. At least he's trying!

"So, what's the plan?"
"Well, basically, the plan involves not dying."
"I like this plan!"

A classic that came to mind. Hoping the Ranger has come up with something a bit more elaborate.

A better variant:

Dr. Peter Venkman: You’re gonna endanger us, you’re gonna endanger our client – the nice lady, who paid us in advance, before she became a dog…
Dr. Egon Spengler: Not necessarily. There’s definitely a *very slim* chance we’ll survive.
[pause while they consider this]
Dr. Peter Venkman: [slaps Ray] I love this plan! I’m excited to be a part of it! LET’S DO IT!

I love this line...

I am rather concerned that she is useless for the Goldies, and they would let her go, like they did with the little girl, whereas they might deem the ranger useful. And the ranger does seem like a decent person, I hope he/she survives this!

Blast out Ride of the Valkyries, Feeliewhackers hate it ;)

or....more appropriately for his choice of action...
Oldarmourer 15th Dec 2021, 10:35 AM edit delete reply
Looking at the engines, I assume that bike comes with shields ?
It's going to need them once it hits the sound barrier ;)

There was a quote from Yes Minister like that, where Sir Humphrey Appleby was holding forth about how ministerial logic works: "We must do something. This is something. Therefore we must do it."

Well, any ongoing combat between the criminal gang and the evil cyborgs might create enough confusion and chaos to let him rush in, grab her and quickly fly back out.

I recall having similar thoughts when my unit asked for volunteers to help with state COVID operations. Note this was back in early 2020 when we still had far more questions than answers about it. But I kept coming back to the same hard fact, that it might not have been the form I expected it to take, but such events are part of why I joined the National Guard

Goldies are not invulnerable. Also, being Ambush Predators, they seem to be slow to react on defense. The Ranger could knock out the one menacing the pilot and escape with her while the others are battling the scavengers who brought the cargo ship down. Speed is of the essence in this case,

Better a stupid plan now then the perfect solution 10 minutes too late....and if it works and you live through it it ain't stupid

Military Maxim: "If it's stupid but it works, it wasn't stupid."

Mercenary Maxim: If it's stupid, and it works, it's still stupid, and you're lucky.

Teddy Roosevelt said:

"In an emergency the best thing to do is the right thing.

"The next best thing to do is the WRONG thing.

"The worst thing to do is to do nothing."

I'm reminded of a particular story about a guy who narrowly avoided a wreck with a petroleum tanker truck that jack knifed while he'd been driving about a second or so behind it. A car with four women in it didn't. Their car caught fire, and there was fuel leaking from the tanker.

He grabbed his fireproof emergency blanket, wrapped it around him as he charged in, thinking "this is going to hurt."

He managed to save all four of them, but that fireproof emergency blanket turned out to be vital, because he'd only just gotten the fourth woman out of the car and wrapped in the blanket with him when the fuel reached the fire and explosion.

He was right, it hurt.
Ebonbolt 17th Dec 2021, 2:48 PM edit delete reply

He's either going to be a big hero or a dead hero.

Maybe they just wanna play poker ?
Oldarmourer 18th Dec 2021, 4:14 PM edit delete reply
From what we've seen of them so far, the Feeliewhackers probably want to play stripmine-poker...
Haegan2005 20th Dec 2021, 10:20 PM edit delete reply

Going to be a tough hand to play with that many people at the table. I suspect that they are goig to find a way to limit the table. There are only 52 cards after all!
Oldarmourer 21st Dec 2021, 9:23 PM edit delete reply
52 that you know of...
